July 2

Mid-Western Regional Council smallcats

Propose merging:
2-page category
3-page categories
Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Each of these categories for small places in the Mid-Western Regional Council, New South Wales are are tiny, with little chance of expansion. They all currently contain 2 or 3 pages: the head article plus one or two others. I haven't found any other articles to expand the categories.
As with many other New South Wales locations, category creation seems to have been a bit indiscriminate. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:53, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Dubbo Regional Council smallcats

Propose merging:
Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Each of these categories for small places in the Dubbo Regional Council, New South Wales are are tiny, with little chance of expansion. They all currently contain 2 pages: the head article plus one other. I haven't found any other articles to expand the categories.
As with many other New South Wales locations, category creation seems to have been a bit indiscriminate. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:35, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

City of Maitland smallcats

Propose merging:
Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Each of these categories for small places in the City of Maitland, New South Wales are are tiny, with little chance of expansion. They all currently contain one article. If the head article was added, that would still be only two. I haven't found any other articles to expand the categories.
As with many other New South Wales locations, category creation seems to have been a bit indiscriminate. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 23:18, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Kempsey Shire smallcats

Propose merging:
2-page category
3-page categories
Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Each of these categories for small places in the Kempsey Shire of New South Wales are are tiny, with little chance of expansion. They all currently contain only head article plus two others (one in the case of Arakoon). I haven't found any other articles to expand the categories.
As with many other New South Wales locations, category creation seems to have been a bit indiscriminate. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 22:59, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Eugowra, New South Wales

Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Contains only the eponymous Eugowra and one other article. Both are already well-categorised, so no need to merge. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 22:52, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Bathurst Region smallcats

Propose merging:
Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Each of these categories for small places in the Bathurst Region of New South Wales are are tiny, with little chance of expansion. They all currently have only two pages: head article plus one other. I haven't found any other articles to expand the categories.
As with many other New South Wales locations, category creation seems to have been a bit indiscriminate. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 22:41, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Camden Council (New South Wales) smallcats

Propose merging:
2-page categories
3-page categories
Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Each of these categories for small places in the Camden Council (New South Wales) are are tiny, with little chance of expansion.
As with many other New South Wales locations, category creation seems to have been a bit indiscriminate. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 22:26, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

City of Shoalhaven smallcats

Propose merging:
Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Both of these categories for small places in the City of Shoalhaven a tiny, with little chance of expansion. Bomaderry contains only two pages: the eponymous article and one other article. Huskisson contains 3 pages.
As with many other New South Wales locations, category creation seems to have been a bit indisrciminate. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 22:16, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Bega Valley Shire smallcats

Propose merging:
Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Five of these categories for places in Bega Valley Shire contain only two pages: the eponymous article and one other article. The other (Tanja) contains 3 pages.
There are all low-population places. Edrom has a population of zero, Greigs Flat 151, Tanja 157 ... and the biggest by far is Tathra with 1,675. As with many other New South Wales locations, category creation seems to have been a bit indiscriminate. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 21:57, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Troublesome Night

Nominator's rationale: Troublesome Night (film series) should be main.★Trekker (talk) 21:41, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sri Lankan people of Fooian/Jewish descent

Propose deleting:
Nominator's rationale: This is a classical case of unverified and unsourced Wikipedia:Overcategorization by @Spiderjerky: where a user has created a lot of pseudo-categories and parents for one person Jeanne Hoban based on her purported Jewishness, when in fact her article clearly states Jeanne Hoban#Early years: "She was born in Gillingham, Kent. Her father, Major William Leo Hoban was a British featherweight boxer and former soldier of Irish roots, her mother, May Irene Free, was a small businesswoman of partly Jewish extraction." providing no sources whatsoever. Basically Jeanne Hoban was born in England and lived in Sri Lanka and she should go into Category:Sri Lankan people of English descent & Category:British expatriates in Sri Lanka which for some unknown reason she is not placed in.
Thank you, IZAK (talk) 21:15, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Note: This discussion has been included in the list of Judaism-related deletion discussions. 21:36, 2 July 2020 (UTC) IZAK (talk) 21:36, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete non-notable intersections. Another set of "descent" categories suffering not only the problem IZAK identifies of miscategorization, but the usual problems of objectively determining: how much of Fooian descent must one be and how distant must/can it be; then finding reliable sources tell us that the person is within those objectively determined definitions (without adequate sourcing of any patrilineal claims of descent - not everyone is the child of who they call dad). This also has the additional problem of the inclusion of "Jewish", which may remain purely a religious designation. Does someone become of "Jewish" descent if an ancestor converted to Judaism but their collateral relatives from non-converting ancestors have different ethnicities/descents. If so, then these "descent" categories for some imparted blood-lines are even more useless. Carlossuarez46 (talk) 00:20, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete all per nominator. This is a good catch: a forest of non-notable intersections of attributes not held by the one person placed in the forest, and which would be of dubious value even if there was evidence for their veracity. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 02:27, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete all per above. Marcocapelle (talk) 05:58, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Delete all -- They seem to exist because one person was distantly of some unspecified eastern European (Ashkenazi) descent. Jewish descent is matrilineal, which might make a Jewish (or of Jewish descent). The Jews in eastern Europe were generally endogamous, so that Carlossuarez46's comment is misplaced: Being Jewish is not purely an issue of religion, but a quasi-ethnic category. Peterkingiron (talk) 17:40, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Southeastern Massachusetts

Propose deleting:
Nominator's rationale: Per WP:SUBJECTIVECAT. Southeastern Massachusetts "is not an official designation [and] its borders are not exactly defined." User:Namiba 20:00, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Ex-gay organizations

Nominator's rationale: Proposed category would better the actual purpose of these groups, and would also better reflect that 'ex-gay' is a contested term. 'Ex-gay organizations' is unclear and suggests that it is the organizations which are 'ex-gay'. Darren-M talk 19:59, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Gamera series Kaiju

Nominator's rationale: Very small category. ★Trekker (talk) 16:28, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Deep Blue Sea films

Nominator's rationale: Standard. ★Trekker (talk) 16:07, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Prom Night (franchise)

Nominator's rationale: Per main article. ★Trekker (talk) 15:49, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Woolbrook, New South Wales

Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Contains only the eponymous Woolbrook, New South Wales and one other article. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 15:46, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Timecop

Nominator's rationale: Main article is franchise article. ★Trekker (talk) 15:34, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Manilla, New South Wales

Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Contains only the eponymous Manilla, New South Wales and one other article. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 15:22, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Szczuka

Nominator's rationale: to disambiguate it from the article Szczuka, which is a village.
... or preferably delete per WP:SMALLCAT, since it contains only one article. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 14:59, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wingecarribee Shire smallcats

  • Propose merging:
Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Wingello has two pages including the head article; the others have 3 pages including the head article. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 14:53, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Contains only the eponymous Bundanoon, New South Wales and Bundanoon railway station. The head article lists no other topics to add. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 03:11, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Contains only the head article Bong Bong, New South Wales and Christ Church, Bong Bong. The head article links to no other topics which could be added. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 03:06, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Contains only the head article Exeter, New South Wales and Exeter railway station, New South Wales. The head article lists no other articles which could be added, BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 03:03, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Hellraiser

Nominator's rationale: Per main article.★Trekker (talk) 14:19, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Stanton, California

Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Contains only the eponymous Stanton, California and 2 other articles. All articles are already adequately categorised, so no need to merge. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 14:19, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Regardless as to whether a certain article should or should not be removed or added, it is clear that SMALLCAT doesn't apply. There is clear room for growth.--User:Namiba 14:14, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@User:Namiba, that depends on how much is left after your inappropriate additions have been purged. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 18:42, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think what I added is inappropriate, but, either way, a city of almost 40,000 residents in a metropolitan area is clearly one that doesn't fit WP:SMALLCAT criteria.--User:Namiba 23:31, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Howling novels

Nominator's rationale: Propper name. ★Trekker (talk) 14:16, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:St Albans, New South Wales

Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Contains only the eponymous St Albans, New South Wales and two other articles. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 14:12, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:St. John's Abbey, Kilkenny

Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Contains only the eponymous St. John's Abbey, Kilkenny and one image. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 14:09, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge Per nom and the spirit of WP:C2F, one eponymous article. RevelationDirect (talk) 14:18, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Move to/ create Category:St John's Priory (Kilkenny), because that is the name everyone in Kilkenny uses to refer to the church, it's the category used on Commons and it has many more photographs in it. A.-K. D. (talk) 16:29, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • @A.-K. D., renaming the category would not resolve the problem that it fails WP:SMALLCAT. The fact that Commons has lots photos is the abbey is irrelevant; this category exists to group the content on en.wp, and there isn't enough content on en.wp to support a category on en.wp.
If the category exists on en.wp, it follows the name of the head article, which is St. John's Abbey, Kilkenny. If you want the head article to be renamed, then open a WP:RM discussion ... but please note that per WP:COMMONNAME, article titles are follow usage in

      independent, reliable English-language sources

... and one editor's imprssion of the views of everyone in Kilkenny is not a WP:Reliable source. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 07:49, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge Per nom and in the spirit of WP:C2F, do not rename. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:57, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Merge -- We do not want one item categories (or upmerge). Peterkingiron (talk) 17:43, 5 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:South Grafton, New South Wales

Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Contains only the eponymous South Grafton, New South Wales and one other article. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 13:37, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Sodwalls, New South Wales

Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Contains only the eponymous Sodwalls, New South Wales and one other article. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 13:31, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Solomon family

Nominator's rationale: disambiguation. The head article Solomon family is about an Australian family. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 13:29, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Central Coast Council (New South Wales) smallcats

Propose merging:
Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Each of these categories for small towns in Central Coast Council (New South Wales) contains only two pages: the eponymous article and one other article. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 13:20, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Marcelli (gens)

Nominator's rationale: There is no "gens Marcella", the Marcellus cognomen was simply used by a branch of the Claudia gens. ★Trekker (talk) 13:12, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You can read the Claudia gens for example or look at List of Roman gentes. Gens are a specific thing, not all names are gentes.★Trekker (talk) 07:56, 6 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Signatories to the Ladies' Petition for the Establishment of the Foundling Hospital

Nominator's rationale: per WP:NONDEF. The signatories are listed in the article Signatories to the Ladies' Petition for the Establishment of the Foundling Hospital. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 12:46, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Sources limited from use on Wikipedia

Nominator's rationale: Not sure why we need this category since it makes no sense to a reader or maintenance since we have a page listing all these sources and other sources 🌸 1.Ayana 🌸 (talk) 10:57, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I can agree with this, for editors it may be helpful, but its not mainspace material.★Trekker (talk) 14:27, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Kurayoshi, Tottori

Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Only the head article Kurayoshi, Tottori and 2 others. All 3 are adequately categorised, so no need to merge. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 10:45, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
"most 'scruciating idle"... retention per WP:SMALLCAT ("potential", repeat, "potential", repeat "potential"); encouragement to cease and desist per WP:SMALLCAT? encouragement to discuss first and during per WP:civility, HUMAN:civility? Were one to use Wikipedia's search function to help populate the category (not that this is necessarily necessary per WP:SMALLCAT), one might find eg Tottori College, Sekigane, Tottori, and Misasa-Tōgōko Prefectural Natural Park, which presumably puts us over the 5 articles minimum suggested above, seemingly contrary to WP:SMALLCAT, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 23:57, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Wikipedia requested images of Oklahoma

Nominator's rationale: Seems to be an unnecessary and duplicative subcategory within the main category for Oklahoma image requests Jmertel23 (talk) 10:45, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Bungo-ōno, Ōita

Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Only the head article Bungo-ōno, Ōita and one other. Both are adequately categorised, so no need to merge. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 10:43, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
yawn; as above and per the Matsumae listing previously; Jinkaku-ji, Bungo-Kiyokawa Station, Oitakenou Airport, Asaji, Ōita, Inukai, Ōita, Mie, Ōita, Ogata, Ōita, Ōno, Ōita, Chitose, Ōita, Kiyokawa, Ōita, Ogata Station (Ōita), Asaji Station, Miemachi Station, Sugao Station, Inukai Station, etc. Please at least search for existing articles before incorrect citation of WP:SMALLCAT; please strike the remaining frivolous/vexatious Japanese municipality nominations on similar grounds, thanks, Maculosae tegmine lyncis (talk) 23:57, 3 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Maculosae tegmine lyncis, try some WP:Civility. The only frivolous/vexatious actions here is your 8-year-long run of creating categories without trying to populate them. In the case of this category, you didn't even bother to add the head article Bungo-Ōno: it was added[1] on by Good Ol'factory 9 hours after you created[2] the category.
That is not a one-off issue: I stumbled across this nest of WP:SMALLCATs when my AWB run adding missing eponymous categories across all topics repeatedly found similar cases of missing eponcats for Japanese towns. Please drop the anger, sarcasm and personal attacks, and put your energies populating the categories the categories which which you created as mostly one-article categories. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 07:35, 4 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: All the contents of the parent category is in the immediate area of Boston, making categorization for Boston less relevant. Nominator's rationale: Criminal law generally uses the terminology of "attempted" crimes rather than "failed" crimes. Of the four subcategories, two use some form of "attempt" and two use some form of "attempt" along with "failed". So all four use some form of "attempt". Category:Retargeting

Propose renaming either:
Nominator's rationale: disambiguation. This category is about "retargeting" in online advertising, for which the main appears to be Behavioral retargeting, even tho it's currently not in the category.
The bare title Retargeting is about computer software compilation. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 02:33, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Ramenye

Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT: only one article. The title Ramenye is a disambiguation which i just created. We don't appear to have any article on a Ramenye in Moscow Oblast. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 02:18, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Support ships of the Royal Navy

Nominator's rationale: Per WP:OVERLAPCAT and WP:C2D, consistency with main article's name
We recently decided to merge Category:Support ships into the proper subcategories of Category:Auxiliary ships in this CFD discussion. That was based on the two categories having the same scope and going with the main article name, Auxiliary ship. This subcategory was missed in that earlier nomination and the Royal Navy doesn't seem to have any specific/unique distinction between these two terms. (Tagging those involved in that earlier nom regardless of how they iVoted: @Bibliomaniac15, Clarityfiend, and Marcocapelle:) - RevelationDirect (talk) 01:53, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Biratori, Hokkaido

Category:Rankoshi, Hokkaido

Nominator's rationale: per WP:SMALLCAT. Contains only two articles: Shellfish Museum of Rankoshi and the head article Rankoshi, Hokkaido (which AFAICS links to no other articles to populate this category). BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 01:49, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Reed family

Nominator's rationale: Disambiguation. The article Reed family is about a different family. BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 01:16, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • True - and as I pointed out,t here are frequently achievements they probably wouldn't have achieved if not for their upbringing. Take an example. Richard Hadlee was one of the world's greatest cricketers. He played in the same international side as brothers Dayle Hadlee and Barry Hadlee. His ex-wife, Karen Hadlee, was also a cricketer. How did Richard, Barry, and Dayle get so good? Backyard cricket practice as kids with their dad, international cricket captain Walter Hadlee. There is no Hadlee family article, not should their be - but a category? Definitely. Grutness...wha? 06:19, 7 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Deaths from cardiac arrest

Nominator's rationale: Every death is from cardiac arrest. While in some cases the cause of that arrest may be significant (and looking at the articles in this category, many of them list a specific cause), the fact of cardiac arrest itself will never be defining. Nikkimaria (talk) 00:44, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

MMORPGs

  • Propose renaming:
Nominator's rationale: massively multiplayer online role-playing games/MMORPG and the name of the parent cat. There is no need for this inconsistency. Speedy was opposed because evidently, I had the same idea a decade ago. @Armbrust:Justin (koavf)TCM 05:29, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Darren-M: We're all here; let's assess them now. Are there some you want to upmerge? RevelationDirect (talk) 23:11, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
RevelationDirect Sports management (2P), text-based (1P), Historical (2P), Community-style (4P), Nautical (4P) are all candidates for deletion and up-merging, I think. Not averse to retaining them if we think they're likely to grow in future, but I'm not convinced the majority of them will grow to that point. Best, Darren-M talk 23:27, 2 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
