The Volkswagen Polo Mk5 is the fifth generation of the Volkswagen Polo supermini-class car, launched by Volkswagen in March 2009.

The Mark 5 Polo, internally designated Typ 6R, is based on Volkswagen's PQ25 platform, shared with the 2008 SEAT Ibiza. Its styling, by a team led by Walter de Silva, follows the direction of the previous 2008 Volkswagen Scirocco and Golf VI. Slightly larger than the previous generation Polo, the Mark 5 is, however, 7.5% lighter.The car was unveiled in the 2009 Geneva Motor Show.[1]

The Volkswagen Polo won the 2010 European Car of the Year, beating the Toyota iQ and Vauxhall/Opel Astra.

The European version, with exceptions for the French market, includes a standard ESP electronic stabilization program with Hill Hold Control, head-thorax airbags (integrated in the front seatbacks), belt tensioners and belt force limiters plus seatbelt warning indicator and head restraints, three rear head restraints and Isofix child seat preparation.

In France, ESP and Hill Hold Control are standard equipments only on the models with engines no less than 85 HP (63 kW).

Polo "Wörthersee 09"

A one-off Polo concept car was shown at the Wörthersee GTI meeting in May 2009. Considered as a preview of a future Polo GTI model, the car featured Flash Red paint with black rally stripes, 18-inch "Budapest" wheels, high gloss black interior and aluminum tread plates.[3]

Volkswagen Vento (sedan version)

A sedan version of Polo was launched in India on 6 July 2010[4] by hanging the car from the side of a hotel in New Delhi.[5][6] It has a length of about 4.4m and has several engine options which are based on petrol and diesel. It is intended to compete with the Honda City which is very popular in India. Special features have been presented in the top variant such as a back control for front passenger seat among others.

North American release

The North American market will finally see the Polo in its vehicle lineup with the release of the fifth generation version of the vehicle. Body styles will likely be a 4-door sedan and 5-door hatchback. In 2012 production of the North American Polo sedan will commence at Volkswagen's production facility in Puebla, Mexico, alongside the sixth generation Jetta/NCS.[7]
