Questions of purview

What to tag? TCP/IP protocols that are of use on the interwebs proper (ie other than DHCP-style protocols that are only used on local isolated networks) are fairly obvious candidates to be dealt with here. Web boom/bust businesses and web 2.x businesses & certain Internet appliances, NGOs like IETF, ARPA, etc. seem to fit well here, as do. Seems to me like some overlap with the Computer networking WP would do more good than harm, but to try to duplicate the efforts of Wikipedia:WikiProject Internet culture would have us drowning in pirates and ninjas. Thoughts? Other areas underserved?MrZaiustalk 14:52, 14 September 2007 (UTC)PS: Businesses like Google etc seem to be covered by Internet culture, and it might be nice to maintain a slightly more technical and organizational scope here.[reply]

Category:Generic top-level domains & Category:CENTR members probably need in. Is it normal to use bots to populate initially? Between those and Category:Internet standards & their daughter cats, that's already several hundred articles that fall under our purview but not many other technically focused groups. Notice of List articles

Page(s) related to this project have been created and/or added to one of the Wikipedia:Contents subpages (not by me).

This note is to let you know, so that experts in the field can expand them and check them for accuracy, and so that they can be added to any watchlists/tasklists, and have any appropriate project banners added, etc. Thanks. --Quiddity 20:21, 5 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There is good information in the articles on the Internet, World Wide Web, and in related articles. Hard to peruse them all or understand what is there. I suggest that a navigational box is needed, but how to order (classify articles) it and what articles to include (and, much worse, not include!) is a real problem. Right now, a naive researcher (me, except I was trained in the industry) has to blunder about a lot of links, and see alsos to find information. Student7 (talk) 13:34, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Update on The Internet Portal

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 05:42, 28 February 2009 (UTC) [reply]

This article was tagged for speedy deletion as spam, but since it gets a 5-star rating on Firefox's add-on list with 77 ratings, I wasn't willing to speedy it without further discussion. What do you guys think, is this an article you want in Wikipedia? - Dan Dank55 (push to talk) 18:56, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't see why not, although it needs a rewrite. ffm 22:05, 4 March 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

These texts were used as references in the creation of the History of the Internet article. However, they were added to the article at a time when there was no accepted system of inline citation, and there is no link between the references and what they are cited to support. This leaves some parts of the article apparently uncited, but supposedly supported by these texts.

Can someone with these texts please read over the article, and identify the sections and statements that are supported by these texts.

Thanks in advance. --Barberio (talk) 20:43, 28 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Article needing improvement: Metacrap

I stumbled upon metacrap the other day. This article badly needs improvement. The term apparently originates from Cory Doctorow's 2001 essay. The article itself has exactly one citation (to the essay itself, violating the independent clause of WP:RS and maybe WP:SPS), two inbound links (one from the Cory Doctorow article) and a {{notability}} template plopped onto it since 2007. I was almost going to submit it for AfD, but it seems that while the term has not reached popular usage there are at least multiple references to the term and essay by independent sources. I'm not sure if that's enough to pass WP:GNG, but I figured if anyone feels that strongly about it they can submit it for AfD themselves. With all due respect to {{sofixit}}, abstract self-referential 'meta' topics are not my forte. Given how stale the article is (revision statistics), I figured this might point some interested people to it and perhaps serve as a shot of epinephrine to restart its barely-beating heart. Hi wikiproject, Bufferbloat is a fairly hot subject, and I would love it to have a decent article about it. What we currently have falls shy of WP:Brilliant prose. I can't really fix it myself at the moment. Things are a bit too technical for me to completely work out. I did some copyediting and tagging of dubious and unsourced statements, but I could use some more hands on it. What I would like in particular for now is to inline source all unsourced information, and to remove all false information. When that's fixed, we probably need to re-section, possibly expand and prune where needed. All help is welcome. Martijn Hoekstra (talk) 20:03, 7 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I reworked the article, splitting into sections (which might need more eyeballs), refs, exts, links etc etc and using the ACM ref more. I tagged some weaknesses at the top of the article. Widefox (talk) 17:24, 28 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
If you have specific questions about bufferbloat, please drop me a line. The article certainly needs serious work, and there has been a lot of progress since the last time people worked on the article. Unfortunately, I don't have time to try to fix the article myself. Hi everyone. I am aiming to improve the Digital Identity article, I think there are serious issues with the content in general terms, doesn't cover the wide range of meanings and studies related to the term, but I haven't found anyone who is more experienced with wikipedia or within social sciences to help me out. I would be doing an extensive scholarly research on the topic due to an educational assignment. I didn't get a response on the talk pages of the article and I would need experienced users to point me in the right direction, because the problems can't be solved with minor edits. It has been suggested by several people that the article might need a complete rewrite, since it is too technical and its focus is too narrow. Could you point me in the right direction? Bettinusz (talk) 10:16, 19 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I rewrote a few significant parts of the Digital identity article, I think it was hard to understand, overcomplicated. If you could give me some feedback on the writing, style, anything that would be great. I also added a few extra sections, because the article was only focusing on technical aspects, I thought that was too narrow for the subject. I will try and add some sociological perspectives as well. Thanks, Bettinusz (talk) 22:21, 20 March 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone update the article, following the recent IPO of Facebook, which has increased the traffic. Some suggestions I would point:

i) Add a secondary source, rather than Socialbakers.com
ii) Increase the list to 100/150/200 countries
iii) Add three more columns, namely Sl no, penetration, change%
iv) Convert the external links in the stats into ref with cite templates
v) Expand the text
vi) Add more than one type of stats, if possible
vii) Represent some data in form of graphs/charts or a better world map
viii) Add better links in external links section
ix) Have updates for all countries at one time, not like as it is
ix) Rename to Statistics of Facebook

Anyone, please review this. By going around the topic, I also found an article unupdated for a long time, Facebook features. Thanks, extra999 (talk) 09:32, 20 May 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I would like to bring your attention to this forum

Hey, guys. I hope I've come to the right place to discuss a possible HTML5 version of Wikipedia, given that most project members have background about this stuff.

As some users may know, HTML5 is a new version of the HyperText Markup Language designed with the DOM, AJAX, and competition with Adobe Flash in mind. Each time the development team has attempted to introduce HTML5 to the MediaWiki software, it broke several scripts and bots, so they dropped those changes. For more information about the HTML5 revolution, click here. To test whether your browser is compatible with HTML5, click here.

Here are some main points from the main discussion at WP Village Dump:

  • Wikipedia pages should be divided into semantic elements that a regular viewer wouldn't care about, but that would make processing by AI simpler. Examples of such tags include article (for the body of an article), nav (for navigation elements and category links), and section (for sections of Wikipedia articles).
  • Inline MathML could be used rather than PNG to display equations and formulae in articles, in order to save bandwidth and allow easier processing. For example, MathML equations could be copied and pasted into documents, in whole and in part, much more easily than PNG equations.
  • Editors should be encouraged to use appropriate tags for emphasis, instead of just bold or italic. This is a W3C recommendation and, while not necessary, could be used to improve the machine-readability of featured articles. (Not everyone agreed to this, but it's worth discussing.)

There are also a few things I haven't discussed yet, such as Microdata and WYSIWYG editing. Any other ideas? Seriously, don't hesitate to propose or discuss them! 68.173.113.106 (talk) 21:18, 9 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Hi!
