"Truffle Butter"
Song

"Truffle Butter" is a song by American rapper Nicki Minaj featuring Canadian rapper Drake and American rapper Lil Wayne. It was originally an iTunes Store-exclusive bonus track from Minaj's third studio album The Pinkprint (2014), although it was later released through additional online music stores and online streaming services on January 23, 2015. It was released as the fifth single from The Pinkprint by Young Money Entertainment, Cash Money Records, and Republic Records. "Truffle Butter" is hip hop song that takes influence from house music, the song contains a beat heavy production and contains a sample Maya Jane Coles’ song "What They Say" (2010).

Upon release "Truffle Butter" received positive from critics, with many critics prefering the song over Minaj's other single "Only" and calling it a hit. Commercially the song was successful peaking at number fourteen on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100, extended her lead as the female with the third most appearances on the Hot 100. The song has been covered by a variety of artists including rappers T.I., Ludacrisand Ace Hood.

Background and release

During an interview with Capital Xtra on June 23, 2013, Minaj revealed that her then-upcoming album The Pinkprint would "definitely" include a collaboration with Canadian rapper Drake: "We're supposed to meet up this week to get some stuff crack-a-ling in the studio. I think there'll be another feature on the album that will blow people away. I'm super excited about that too, but it's obviously a secret!"[1] In December 2014, Minaj released the tracklist for The Pinkprint, which included two songs featuring Drake and Lil Wayne: "Only" appears on the standard release, while "Truffle Butter" is included on the iTunes deluxe edition.[2]

Republic Records initially announced that "The Night is Still Young" would be the next single from The Pinkprint following "Bed of Lies; however, the label later confirmed "Truffle Butter" as the follow-up single, with its being released to U.S. radio on March 3, 2015.[3]

Composition

"Truffle Butter" features label mates Drake and Lil Wayne, and samples Maya Jane Coleshouse song "What They Say" (2010). All three rappers begin their verses with the phrase “Thinkin’ out loud,” which was described by Alex Macpherson of The Guardian as a "relaxed, spontaneous mode."[4] In the words of Spin's Brennan Carley, the track is "a complex, subwoofer-ready song."[5] Randall Roberts of the Los Angeles Times characterized it as a "beat-heavy" house track.[6] However, Kim Osorio writing for NPR Music described "Truffle Butter" as house-influenced.[7]

Critical reception

"Truffle Butter" received universal acclaim from critics, with many critics preffering the song over Minaj's other single "Only". Meaghan Garvey from Pitchfork said the song was "a lay-up of a radio hit", calling it "instantly 100 times more likeable than "Only"." and didn't understand its bonus track placement.[8] Anupa Mistry from Complex called the song a "brilliant moment" on The Pinkprint.[9] Drew Haskins from The Chronicle praised the song, saying it "blends warped house music with rapid-fire lyrics about opulence to create the album’s best pure party jam."[10] Brennan Carley from Spin said "Nicki has a surefire hit in "Truffle Butter," a lyrically complex and more subwoofer-ready collaboration with Drake and Lil Wayne than the much-buzzed "Only"."[11] Dee Lockett from Slate compared its potential appeal to Minaj's previous hit Super Bass, which was initially a deluxe track too but became a hit after all, and called it a better song than "Only".[12]

Tom Breihan from Stereogum called the song "a tastefully glimmering clipped house-music track", "about 80 bazillion times slicker and more confident than "Only"." stating that "someone at Cash Money is crazy if they don’t make it a single. It’s the catchiest song without a chorus since “Hot Nigga.”[13] Alex Macpherson from The Guardian also called the song much better than Only, saying "in relaxed, spontaneous mode all three are so much less tiresome than on their official triple collaboration."[14] Samson Phoarah from The Newshub said the song made good use of its sample, further stating ""Truffle Butter" sees Drake and Minaj spitting comfortably and building a momentum over the cut's clappy beat – until Lil’ Wayne delivers a needed dose of unpredictability."[15]

Commercial performance

"Truffle Butter" debuted at number 71 on the US Billboard Hot 100. In doing so, Minaj made her 60th appearance on Hot 100 making her the fifteenth artist to do so. It also extended her lead as the third most appearances on the Hot 100 among women below Aretha Franklin (73) and Taylor Swift (66). The song also gave Drake his 74th entry, tying him with Ray Charles for sixth most chart appearances, and Lil Wayne his 124th entry, second only to the cast of Fox's Glee's record 207.[16] As of February 22, 2015, "Truffle Butter" has sold 308,538 units in the United States.[17]

Cover versions

On January 29, 2015 rapper Ludacris released a short remix of the song as part of his weekly LudaVerses series.[18] Rapper Ace Hood also did a short remix called "Beast Mix" of the song. On February 18, 2015 it was uploaded on his soundcloud account.[19] On February 24, 2015 American rapper T.I. released a remix to the song, the rappers version was released via DJ Whoo Kid and DJ MLK.[20]

On February 25, 2015 Drake performed the song on his "Would You Like A Tour?" tour in Australia.
