Oge Okoye

Thank you for protecting Oge Okoye article. The vandalism on the Wikipedia page is all over local news and blogs in Nigeria. Just Google search "Oge Okoye wikipedia", and you will see the results. I wish I was more frequent to stop this bad publicity earlier, I really want to improve the accuracy of the contents on Wikipedia. I don't like it that Wikipedia will now be seen by Nigerians as a place where anything goes. Darreg (talk) 15:01, 4 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Birmingham Mail Edit Message

Hi,

The edit note stated " (updated circulation figures released today)".

The new figures were released today for circulations, and that was the data inputted and updated - with reference.

I would be interested to know how you would describe that change, and if you are happy with out of date information being publicly shown rather than the new correct data.

Thanks.

UPDATE - No reply... what is the point of removing correct information from wikipedia, sending an automated message stating you are happy to discuss, then ignore? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.159.93.135 (talk) 18:57, 27 February 2017 (UTC)

-- This was archived , despite being very recent. Life may have made you busy but you had done further edits since that point. The unanswered point is what about the note "updated circulation figures released today" made you confused and 'puzzled' as it is very clear. If you are an editor using auto tools take more care, and read and research what real people are doing. Auto tools without care are very dangerous. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.175.103.226 (talk) 16:44, 4 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Ad Orientem! It's nice to be able to sit down and catch up with things here again :-). I'm doing quite well; just been busy!! Things should slow down next week though! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:50, 10 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Hi Izaiah.morris! My apologies for the delayed response. As Ad Orientem stated above, I've been very busy with real life stuff lately and have only had a chance to log on and catch up just now. You're very welcome; I'll be happy to provide you with any assistance that you need :-). Regarding the inclusion of sources in articles: Indeed, copying and pasting content from other sites directly is a big no-no; it violates Wikipedia's policies on copyrights. Since we aim to make all content on Wikipedia completely 100% open, available, and free for anyone to access -- we obviously can't violate copyright policies or copyright laws, as it would obviously compromise our ability to do this. Instead, you'll want to summarize or paraphrase the content you're trying to reference from an external source, then cite the source in-line with that content. This assures that nothing is copied and pasted (or "stolen") and that credit is given to the source where it is due. The guidelines I provided you here will be important to read and understand, as it will show you how to properly cite sources and make sure that you're doing so correctly. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me with any questions, requests for help, or anything else you feel that you need to ask! I'll be more than happy to answer them and help you with anything that you need. Happy Friday! :-D ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:49, 10 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Information icon In a recent edit to the page Commonwealth Lawyers Association, you changed one or more words or styles from one national variety of English to another. Because Wikipedia has readers from all over the world, our policy is to respect national varieties of English in Wikipedia articles.

For a subject exclusively related to the United Kingdom (for example, a famous British person), use British English. For something related to the United States in the same way, use American English. For something related to India, use Indian English. For something related to another English-speaking country, such as Canada, Australia, or New Zealand, use the variety of English used there. For an international topic, use the form of English that the original author of the article used.

In view of that, please don't change articles from one version of English to another, even if you don't normally use the version in which the article is written. Respect other people's versions of English. They, in turn, should respect yours. Other general guidelines on how Wikipedia articles are written can be found in the Manual of Style. If you have any questions about this, you can ask me on my talk page or visit the help desk. Thank you. AusLondonder (talk) 18:06, 6 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Advice needed

Hello. I am seeking advice on what to do about an experienced editor who I noticed was making edits contrary to the guideline WP:NOTBROKEN, in many articles. I contacted them about it and their hostile response has been essentially that (1) NOTBROKEN is a bad guideline, and (2) I should stop obsessing over them and this guideline.

Even if NOTBROKEN is a bad guideline, I think they should observe it or try to get it improved or eliminated. Otherwise they are simply creating work for editors who follow guidelines. To the extent that editors pull in opposite directions, we have churning disguised as progress.

Our brief interactions can be found on our respective talk pages, linked below. Note for context that, when I posted on their page, they responded by adding a comment to the existing thread on my page.
User talk:Mandruss#PT-109
User talk:Hydrargyrum#Continued edits contrary to NOTBROKEN

If this is a content dispute, am I expected to start a discussion at every article where they make such an edit? Please advise what I should do, or whether you think I should just let this go. ―Mandruss  00:12, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Mandruss! I apologize for the delayed response; I've been very busy in real life and have only had a chance to catch up on my messages just now. I agree with the WP:NOTBROKEN guideline in general, as the act of making these changes (unless they're for reasons that are in the "Good reasons to bypass redirects" list) generally does have more negative effects than good ones should certain situations arise down the line. Sometimes it helps if you explain why directly on their talk page so that they might understand what the reason is for having the guideline in the first place. For example: Explain that if a link on an article is changed to be from a redirect to another article and instead to a direct link to that same article, that link would become broken if the target page is eventually moved without leaving a redirect behind. You could also add that unnecessary pipes (unless needed for grammatical reasons and for the sentence to make sense) does add a degree of difficulty for other editors (especially new or novice editors) to view and edit that article's page source -- no matter how minute the increased difficulty may be. Ending with, "Remember that, while we may be extremely proficient at doing so, others certainly are not.", would also drive the previous point across in a logical and well-mannered way.
The situation that you're going through is quite sticky (especially regarding the user who isn't responding to your messages and is continuing to do this). Is not adhering to this guideline and continuing to not do so despite being asked to stop considered potentially disruptive? I'd say "yes", but it wouldn't be something I'd jump on the block button unilaterally to enforce. I'd personally want to get the input of other administrators who have had the tools longer than I have, and ask them what their thoughts and past experience has been in regards to enforcement. I'm going to ping NeilN, Drmies, and Ad Orientem for their input regarding this situation. When there's a question being asked from an editor regarding the editing or interaction behavior of another, I ask myself "what should be done if someone were warned 5+ times about this and I was asked to do something about it". If I don't know or feel comfortable with the answer that I come up with, then I know that it's time to ask for the input of other administrators. Thanks a lot for your message and for your request for assistance :-). ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:26, 11 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the considered response as well as the pings. As for explaining the guideline's rationale, I doubt I could explain it any better than it does itself, and I linked to it multiple times. It's pretty clear to me that the user understands that rationale but feels that it's less important than having a tooltip that displays the target article title. Again, my view is that it's counterproductive to have editors pulling in opposite directions (often without knowledge of each other's activity), and the guideline describes the direction that the community feels we should be pulling. ―Mandruss  00:43, 11 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
One admin admonished the user for tone. No admin has really answered my question, and I'll assume that's because there is no good answer to it. As is often the case with me, I don't care about the immediate situation so much as the larger issues that it exemplifies (there are at least two here). Absent the community will to confront and address those issues, I constantly have to remind myself of my own motto, In the end, it's only Wikipedia. Thank you for your attention; I will let this go and try to do likewise for similar situations in the future. ―Mandruss  17:54, 13 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed Deletion of Bello Shagari

Hello, I created a page Bello Shagari and it was marked for deletion. Please can you help me stop it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Anas Usman (talkcontribs) 00:26, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Anas Usman! It looks like the page was deleted, but I can certainly help you with article creation in the future. Since you're new to Wikipedia and content creation, I'd recommend that you use Wikipedia:Your first article next time, as well as Wikipedia:Articles for creation (which lets you create an article in the draft space and get it evaluated before being published). These places will help you to learn Wikipedia's various guidelines (such as our guidelines on notability and verifiability) before you allot too much time towards building an article and end up wasting your time. If you have questions about these places, please let me know. I highly recommend that you use them. Thanks for leaving me a message :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 21:58, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Please see the note he left for me on his user talk p., and my reply. Obviously, I will consult with you about unblocking, and will of course only consider it if he is totally candid. Most similar requests have not been, but it has happened. DGG ( talk ) 18:38, 8 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi DGG! Sorry for the really delayed response. I also got your email (and I believe I responded to it that day). It looks like this user is a confirmed sock puppet, so all is resolved in this aspect. I just wanted to make sure that I respond and acknowledge your message nonetheless. Please do not hesitate to reach out to me; my talk page (and email) are both always open to you. I hope you're doing well, and it's great to talk to you again! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:00, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

need to delete an image

Hi Oshwah, I am a new Wiki user and I wanted to include an image on my personal sandbox page. I uploaded it, but I accidentally uploaded it to Wikipedia / wikimedia! I read the delete images wiki page and I'm not an admin so I can't delete it. A bot is asking me to include copyright info, but I just want to delete it. As of now I will try to include copyright info just to be safe, but ultimately I made an upload mistake:( Here is a link to the image: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Sikhote-alin_3_20130204_1012322404.jpg Can you help me? Uncovered an IP User whose commited nothing but Vandalism

It seems we have an IP User who committed nothing but vandalism on a number of pages. The common theme was copying information from an article's infobox and repeating it a number of times on most of the articles they affected; they were reverted as soon as they occurred. I figure you may wish to view this user's recent contributions, to see for yourself what they did and determine a course of action. GUtt01 (talk) 07:10, 14 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi GUtt01! Thanks for the heads up. It looks like this IP has since stopped, so I'm going to hold off on any action. However, if it picks back up, do let me know and I'll jump on it. Thanks for the message! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:08, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, I don't understand how you can remove edits when I'm still writing them. Its 22.28 and you removed my edit at 22.22. Why?

If you look at this paragraph:

Lever started work aged fifteen at his father's wholesale grocery business in Bolton but, as a businessman, he is noted for founding the soap and cleaning product firm, Lever Brothers, with his younger brother James in 1885. He began manufacturing Sunlight Soap and built a business empire with many well-known brands, such as Lux and Lifebuoy. In politics, Lever sat as a Liberal MP for Wirral and then as a Peer (as Lord Leverhulme). He was an advocate for expansion of the British Empire, particularly in Africa and Asia, which supplied palm oil, a key ingredient in Lever's product line.

You will see that it is poorly written, disjointed and crudely worded. Is that the standard you prefer?? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fairchristabelle (talkcontribs) 22:31, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Fairchristabelle! My apologies. I saw in a diff here that you removed content from the article, but you didn't leave an edit summary explaining why. I see now that you're making multiple edits and improvements to the article; I've undid my change and restored the changes you made. In the future, you'll want to explain your edits using the edit summary so that other editors will know and understand what you're doing and why. If you're simply moving content from one paragraph to another, you can also avoid confusion by removing the content and then adding it in the same edit instead of doing so in separate ones. I apologize for the confusion. If you have any more questions, or need more assistance with edit summaries, please let me know and I'll be happy to assist you further. Thanks for leaving me a message with your concerns, and I wish you happy editing. :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:36, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sure, but I'm working from a first class secondary source (W P Jolly) and trying to correct some fairly amateurish writing style at the same time. Its also clear that the article is very poorly structured. I take in what you say about explaining the edits though and I'll take care about this in future. I'll also make changes more complete in future so as to reduce WIP. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fairchristabelle (talkcontribs)
No worries, Fairchristabelle. I appreciate you for bringing the concern to my attention; I certainly want to make sure that my edits don't interfere with the constructive and good faith edits' of others. In this case, it did. Please do not hesitate to message me if you need anything else. I'll be happy to help! Happy editing :-D! ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 22:53, 16 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The Shot

Good evening,

I would like to discuss the topic of The Shot, as we might have some misunderstandings or miscommunication as to what the topic entails.

As someone who has followed the NBA closely for over 30 years I do not take this lightly or with reckless abandon. Please understand I am not trying to assault or attack anyone. The fact is, on June 19th 2016 at approximately 10:30 pm eastern time, the definition of "The Shot" changed. Completely. Permanently.

I have cited a link to the article from the Wall Street Journal that explains and defines this as such. Please see this link:

https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-biggest-shot-in-nba-history-1482235610

Michael Jordan's 1989 "The Shot" was no doubt "THE Shot". Until June 19, 2016.

I will explain: Jordan's shot merely won the first round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. Irving's shot won the Championship. A shot to win the entire championship with the championship in the balance to where Golden State still could have won it, is monumental. Epic. Transcends the history of the NBA.

Please consider this and I ask you to allow this new definition to be permanently installed on the wikipedia link for it.

If not, I ask for your specific reasoning WHY it is not acceptable to change it.

Thank you.

The reason you're blocked is due to edit warring on the article, and also due to the fact that the changes you were repeatedly reverting back were disruptive. The changes you were edit warring over not only removed important sections from the article (i.e. "See also", "References", categories, and others), but also looked to change the topic and subject of the article entirely. It's not that your changes are 100% unwelcome or disallowed, its that what you're proposing to change needs to be discussed and a consensus reached before they are allowed to be placed. When your block expires, you need to start a discussion on the article's talk page here and propose your changes, and let those involved know about the discussion by either pinging them, or letting them know on their user talk pages. This is proper dispute resolution practices and must be followed. Edit warring, or repeatedly reverting an article in a back-and-fourth manner in order to substitute proper dispute resolution practices -- is not allowed and will result in blocking if it continues despite being warned (as you were).
While you are blocked (which is only for 24 hours), you have the opportunity to review Wikipedia:Dispute resolution and Wikipedia:Edit warring and make sure that you understand these policies and guidelines moving forward. You're welcome to ask any questions on your talk page during the time you are blocked, or you can message me on my talk page with any questions after it expires. Thank you for your message, and I hope I answered your questions and concerns. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:03, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
If you're still visiting here IP, even with discussion on the talk page, you cannot just entire replace existing content with content about another event. The existing content covers a notable event and what you're trying to do is essentially an article deletion without going through the proper process. What you can do is propose the existing article be expanded or create a new article if there are enough sources. --NeilN talk to me 12:18, 17 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

ok great,,Hi,

The edit note stated " (updated circulation figures released today)".

The new figures were released today for circulations, and that was the data inputted and updated - with reference.

I would be interested to know how you would describe that change, and if you are happy with out of date information being publicly shown rather than the new correct data.

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 197.136.47.2 (talk) 11:31, 18 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

could you please help we this, so I re-edit it. my job depends on it.

I edited the article because it mistakenly lists that she is from Washington, DC. There is no such thing as "suburban Washington, DC in Maryland". She is from Landover, MD. The article from the Washington Post clearly states this. My edits were not practice.

Urgent assistance requested re page National Indian Students Union UK

Hi Oswah,

I write to request your assistance with the page National Indian Students Union UK.

It appears that despite the page being protected for further edits, the user rd897 has modified content recently, I wonder why this has been allowed as noone else is able to edit the page. Given rd897 is the one who requested deletion in the first place, it seems incorrect to allow them to be the only person able to make edits.

Secondly, I do not want to indulge in edit wars, so wondering if you can help or help advise the right way of going about this. The user rd897 seems to have some sort of personal problem against the said organisation, which as you are aware has not spared them sharing private details of individuals on wikipedia, causing potential harm to them (specifically, user Mohanish Borana and Sanam Arora). This is made all the more concerning by the fact that they are using wikipedia to delete only two pages - National Indian Students Union UK and Sanam Arora, and that is their only contribution to Wikipedia. Should they be allowed to use a platform such as Wikipedia to take out what seems are personal issues?

Finally, regarding the actual notability of the organisation, please note the below:

1. There are 5 patrons of this organisation, including a former United Nations Secretary General (Dr Shashi Tharoor), a member of UK parliament (Rt Hon Virendra Sharma MP), Former Deputy High Commissioner of India to UK (Dr Virander Paul) and an Indian Education Minister (Mr Ram Bilas Sharma). These senior figures have joined the organisation to support its good work and further its vision.

2. There are multiple high profile supporters of this organisation, including its Honorary Fellows - Sri Sri Ravi Shankar (international peace-maker and spiritual guru), Dr SY Quraishi (former Chief Election Commissioner of India), Mr Javed Akhtar (Member of Parliament, India and Indian cinema legendary figure) and Mrs Shabana Azmi (Social activist and Indian cinema legendary figure).

3. This organisation is the only such organisation which is repeatedly engaged in advisory services by the Indian Government on matters relating to young Indian students and youth in the UK. All of this is made evident by various links to Indian government owned websites such as https://pbdindia.gov.in/session-report-5 - you will note that NISAU's president is the only UK student/alumni representative.

4. This organisation has been engaged by the Mayor of London to conduct exclusive research into experiences of Indian students in the UK.

5. This organisation to show some examples, has been called upon by: - UK Parliament's All Party Parliamentary Groups (see http://www.appgmigration.org.uk/sites/default/files/APPG_PSW_Inquiry_Report-FINAL.pdf) - Westminster Policymaking forums (see http://www.westminsterforumprojects.co.uk/forums/slides/Sanam_Arora_International_Students.pdf) - Scottish Government (see http://news.gov.scot/news/scotlands-colleges-back-return-of-post-study-work-visa) - Indian High Commission in UK (see https://www.hcilondon.in/gallery.php?album=1794)

6. This organisation is featured in top Indian and UK newspapers for its work. Some recent examples include: - http://indianexpress.com/article/india/uk-must-remove-obstacles-faced-by-indian-students-shashi-tharoor/ - http://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/asia/britain-indian-students-easier-uk-post-brexit-india-visa-relations-shashi-tharoor-kerala-mp-diplomat-a7623551.html - http://www.hindustantimes.com/education/visa-policies-for-indians-in-the-uk-must-focus-on-post-study-work-opportunities/story-MTGpTgoYvgSE8mTeBORoXJ.html

7. The President of the organisation was recently awarded the India UK thought leadership award for her work with the organisation. Please note that a fellow recipient of the same award was the Deputy Mayor of London. See some coverage by the Times: - https://www.timeshighereducation.com/news/uk-india-relationship-at-risk-as-student-numbers-slide - https://www.timeshighereducation.com/opinion/anglo-indian-ties-strained-student-visa-policy

I hope the few points above are enough to prove the claims made by user rd897 that accompany their deletion request, as baseless:

" The article is regarding an organization which is not really notable, and the article is biased " - a. User Mohanish explained (that rd897 later deleted), the presence of the organisation in more than 25 universities covering all 4 countries of the United Kingdom. In fact, the Northern Ireland wing of the organisation was launched by the Mayor of Belfast and the British Council. See - https://asianlite.com/news/uk-news/nisu-floats-n-ireland-chapter/

b. Notability is very explicit given the points above and, note most of these are stated on the wikipedia page for the organisation anyway

This is a promo just written by the said organization and their representatives in a promotional way to big their own causes. Lack of notability for a small student group

a. This seems like a personal attack on the representatives of the organisation. Wikipedia should not allow its wonderful platform to be used to propagate such negativity

b. I don't agree that the article is written like a promo, but if rd897 feels that way, their view was respected and taking that into account user mohanish modified the text accordingly. rd897 reversed these changes instead of acknowledging that their views had been respected. Also note they didn't help in the first place by editing the page such that their views were taken into account. They simply want it deleted and are not helping either the cause of the organisation nor that of Wikipedia

c. A "small student group" is just factually incorrect. Small groups don't have presence in 5 countries - i.e. all 4 of the UK, and India. nor are they called upon by governments and supported by such senior figures. Even if the organisation was indeed "small", there is no reason for the great work being done by the organisation to not be shared with current, past and future Indian students who greatly appreciate all the work the organisation does to help and represent them. Note this is all done for free (as noted on the NISAU website). Not sure what "own causes" rd897 seems to be alluding to.

Oshwah, your help in this matter will be greatly appreciated. Let me know if you want to discuss anything in more detail.

Meaning of actor como simplismo

An actor is one who plays one or several characters, however, as simplicity an actor is the beautiful person who plays impotant characters and lives their physical beauty. The word "Simplism" means that a word has a meaning that does not appear in the dictionary but is used by people with that same meaning, in my edition I said that the word actor "Like simplism" means what I said earlier. For example: "He is a very handsome guy, he has an actor face", "He is a very beautiful person, obviously he works as an actor and model." "Simplistically speaking, the person named actor or actress is someone beautiful who plays important characters and lives off his / her physical beauty."

I responded to the ANI thread. I think the range is a bit too wide for comfort. I'm going to let other admins weigh in, just in case they feel differently or I missed something. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 08:22, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
(talk page watcher) I saw the ANI thread and commented there too. I've been dealing with Fangusu for a couple years now, since the DJ Autagirl era and long before I was otherwise involved in SPI, but since I picked up the mop she leaves me alone. That's one of her patterns: she begs to be unblocked but never asks administrators. My opinion with regard to the USC ranges is that there are enough known long term abusers operating there that blocking the whole thing permanently would be a net positive for the project. You've got Fangusu, the end date change vandal (who I'm still convinced is a separate user), and at least one other troll who's been much more abusive and aggressive who I can't name at the moment, and all of them have been at it for years. I've written to the university myself a couple times but never received any response at all, and of course the Foundation doesn't care to intervene in cases like these. I don't know about the others but Fangusu at least has figured out how to force an IP reset, so if you block one of her IPs she's back on another one reverting her edits within minutes. Of course current policy doesn't support permanent IP range blocks, but I haven't hesitated to drop a large range block when one of the USC vandals shows up. I've done a /18 (16k users) up to a month, and /16 (64k users) for several days. T-Mobile is a different thing, and I'm not sure about IPv6 ranges. And since the user continued edit warring on Horn of Africa with one of the IPs despite being warned, I just blocked both IPs knowing that they both were being used by the same person. I thought that this was a better way of handling the issue as opposed to protecting the article... especially if the disruption was just by one person and with clear behavioral evidence like that... :-). Melanie Chandra Birth Year

Hello- If I could seek your advice on the subject, I would greatly appreciate. There has been additional edits to this subject's birth year, and in this last edit, it looks both sources are still unreliable.

This first source cited "Minority Report" has a second article from the same publication "Melanie Chandra, 32" that directly conflicts. The second source cited [2] has dates within the article that do not add up: 2003 HS graduate (birth year 1985) and age 29 in Jan 2016 (birth year 1984). This as been an ongoing theme

Since these "current" publications and others cited, to support a 1986 birth year, have all been inconsistent from each other (by uncorroborated dates/numbers) or unreliably sourced (publications that allow self-submittal), I go back and cite older sources from 2000 [3] (sophomore @ 16) and 2001 [4] (junior @17), to weed out and prevent any erroneous "retelling" or editorial revisions.

However, I then find my references tagged for somehow being "outdated". I am not clear as to how a true telling of a birthdate can be outdated.

Short of citing public records, I'm not certain how to come about this in the realm of Wikipedia.

Thanks~ BillieReed (talk) 10:17, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi BillieReed! Thanks for leaving me a message and for asking for help! I'll be more than happy to take a look and let you know what should be done. I agree that neither of the two sources that were provided state the article subject's birthdate (just her age). However, it also appears that your references don't do so either, and that the best we can do is narrow down an approximate range using different sources that are from progressively different publish dates (many of which are a few years old). As right now, there doesn't appear to be any reliable sources provided by anybody that specify the subject's date of birth. Because of this, I went and removed it from the article. It's important to keep Wikipedia's policies regarding biographies of living people in mind. We must reference reliable sources with content that we add to these kinds of articles -- especially if the content is potentially negative or contentious. I think this is the best solution for now; until a reliable source can be found and agreed upon in a talk page discussion, a birthdate should not be present. Please let me know if you have any questions or if you need more help. I'll be happy to assist! Thanks again for the message, and I wish you happy editing! :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 10:34, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The Shot

Good afternoon,

I would like to discuss the definition of Wiki article "The Shot" as it is currently described on Wikipedia, against the now verified and accepted definition which supersedes it as of June 19th, 2016.

Until that date, it was accepted that "The Shot" was in fact the game and playoff series winning shot Michael Jordan took and hit in 1989 to lead his Chicago Bulls over the favored Cleveland Cavaliers. For all the following reasons: Jordan's climb to superstardom, the Chicago Bulls run of championships in the 1990s, and the fact it was over the then-favored Cavs - the sports world considered this the most monumental game winning shot in NBA history.

On June 19th, 2016, the definition of "The Shot" changed forever. That's not my opinion, that's a fact as accepted by sports analysts at every level. That night, Kyrie Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers hit a 3 point shot to break an 89-89 tie in game 7 of the NBA Finals. This was in Oracle Arena against the 73-9 overwhelmingly favored Golden State Warriors. It was after they had held a 3-1 series lead which no team in NBA history had ever come back from. And it was the first major league championship for the city of Cleveland since the Browns won the NFL Championship in 1964.

The evidence to support this is in this article from the Wall Street Journal:

https://www.wsj.com/articles/the-biggest-shot-in-nba-history-1482235610

I am requesting a serious discussion be brought to the people who are in charge of editing and maintaining Wikipedia, that the old definition of "The Shot" be permanently replaced with this completely new one. It has changed. Jordan's shot was nowhere near as important historically or within the auspices of the games themselves. His shot was only to win the first round of the playoffs, in which the Bulls would eventually lose to Detroit and not even make the NBA Finals that year. Kyrie Irving's shot won the championship.

As someone who has followed the NBA for 30 years and have amassed a collection of statistical and historical books on the league over the years I am willing to help in these discussions wherever possible. The definition has changed, and it must be reflected in Wikipedia.

Thank you, and I look forward to discussing this topic.

@Fastball77: Copying what I said above: "You cannot just entire replace existing content with content about another event. The existing content covers a notable event and what you're trying to do is essentially an article deletion without going through the proper process. What you can do is propose the existing article be expanded or create a new article if there are enough sources." You'll need more than one source. --NeilN talk to me 19:06, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

The Shot

I don't think you understand.

This is not about editing Michael Jordan's shot. The meaning of "The Shot" has been completely redefined. There is no addendum, no sub-notation, no reference between the two.

The entire existing article must be completely removed, and replaced with the new definition of Kyrie Irving's shot. I wish you would take the time to understand the importance of this. This is factual history, not something anyone is making up. That's not debatable.

Fastball77 (talk) 20:44, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Fastball77: Pretty sure you don't understand this is an encyclopedia, not a sports almanac. We don't delete history. If, "Obamacare" is replaced by "Trumpcare" in the future, we're not wiping out the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. You are welcome to create a new article. Each article title will probably be disambiguated using the player's name. --NeilN talk to me 20:57, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. You might want to have a look at The Shot (disambiguation) to see how many "The Shots" there are. --NeilN talk to me 21:02, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Fastball77 - Your response above contradicts the core principles and fundamentals in which this project exists on. Your desire to delete the article content and replace it with a redefinition of the term that you feel that it should be -- is not how an encyclopedia is built, and not how we share free and open knowledge with anybody and everybody (the very reason we're all here in the first place). NeilN has been extremely patient and has repeatedly attempted to explain to you that what you're doing is disruptive, and what you need to do in order to contribute positively to the project. The fact that you have dismissed his time and his effort trying to assist you, continued to state that the article must be replaced with your version of its definition, and have stated that it's "not debatable" or that you are unwilling to listen to people who are trying to assist you and will continue this disruption -- shows me that you are not here to build and encyclopedia.
If you believe that a similar article can be written that follows Wikipedia's policies and guidelines, I welcome you to create one and highly recommend that you do so by using the Articles For Creation page. That guided creation page is extremely helpful, and is where you need to go. This is your final warning regarding your edits and your behavior. If you remove content from the article and continue editing the article in the manner that you have been, you will be blocked from editing without further warning or notice. NeilN can vouch for me when I say this: I really really dislike threatening to block editors like this. But your responses and the viewpoints and intentions that you've made clear here have left me absolutely no choice. I am absolutely 100% willing to help you (as is NeilN, I'm sure) if you need it, but your disruption stop here. Please please take the advice that NeilN and I have given you, and work with us to build this project. I really don't want to have to be the bad guy... can you take our advice and use the tools and resources we've given you? How can we help you to do this? ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:34, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
So here's how it will probably work, Fastball77: If you want, you'll create an article called The Shot (Kyrie Irving). The current article at The Shot will be moved to The Shot (Michael Jordan). The Shot (disambiguation) will be renamed simply to The Shot and both articles will be listed there. --NeilN talk to me 23:49, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
NeilN is correct. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 23:51, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
And if you want extra credit, you can add how sources compare the two shots to both articles. That would be neat. --NeilN talk to me 00:34, 22 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Ilovetopaint.

I'm sorry but I can not be respectful to someone who always undoes my edits as the user User talk: Ilovetopaint. I always try to add a genre to a song or album but he is always undoing my editions, here are some examples Interstellar Overdrive Avant-pop without explaining the reason why it does. Always insists that the source is not reliable or unacceptable, but you can see the source if it is reliable. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 180.11.188.51 (talk) 21:28, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

(talk page watcher) Hi 180.11.188.51. Using multiple accounts is only allowed under specific conditions as explained in WP:MULTIPLE. Engaging is sock puppetry is clearly not one of these, so I strongly suggest you do not what your saying you will do at User talk:Ilovetopaint#Ilovetopaint. since such a thing will just lead to all the accounts you create being indefinitely blocked as sock puppets. Your best chance for resolving this is to follow Wikipedia:Dispute resolution and engage in discussion on the talk pages of the articles in question to see if you can establish a consensus for the changes you want to make. I suggest you read through Wikipedia:WikiProject Albums/Album article style guide as well as Wikipedia:Genre warrior for reference to better familiarize yourself with how Wikipedia deals with genre related issues. Once again, your best chance at resolving this is through discussion based upon relevant policies and guidelines and not by trying to force through the changes using multiple accounts. The former may help you achieve your desired goal, while the latter will only lead to your account being blocked. Take a look at Category:Wikipedia sockpuppets to see some others who have tried to use sock puppetry to edit. More and more accounts are added to this list daily, so it is something Wikipedia takes quite seriously. -- Marchjuly (talk) 22:12, 21 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I do not think it is possible to establish a consensus with the user. User talk: Ilovetopaint He is always attentive to my issues and undoes them without giving a reason, so I told him that I have more than ten accounts created for four days to start editing. That user is too unfair. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 179.7.120.95 (talk) 08:35, 22 March 2017 (UTC+9)
Hi 179.7.120.95. Assuming that you are also 180.11.188.51, a consensus does not mean that everyone involved in the discussion agrees; it means that the majority of those involved agree. You should start a discussion on the relevant talk pages and explain your reasons for wanting to make these changes. You should base your reasons on relevant policies and guidelines and explain how the changes you want to make comply with them. You should stick to discussing the changes you want to make, and avoid commenting on other editors as much as possible. Once you've started the discussion, you need to be patient and see what other editors have to say. If your reasons are strongly based upon policies and guidelines, the other editors participating in the discussion will likely support you and the changes you want to make; if your reasons are simply based upon you own personal opinions, etc., then other editors are going to be less inclined to make such a change. It makes no difference how many accounts you create in how many days because Wikipedia does not allow sock puppetry under any circumstances. Once again, if you try to use multiple accounts to force through the changes you wish to make, they will all be eventually blocked by an administrator and you will find yourself unable to edit Wikipedia at all. All the articles where this is an issue will be added to someone's watchlist and monitored for suspicious editing. Any indication of sock puppetry will be quickly noticed and the accounts in question will almost surely end up being blocked by an administrator. You best chance for resolving this is, once again, to follow Wikipedia:Dispute resolution and try and convince others that your reasons for wanting to make the change are correct. -- Marchjuly (talk) 00:52, 22 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Why User:Charliesam123 really is a vandal

Hello Oshwah -- You recently declined to block this user, noting that the references check out. Sorry, I should have been clearer. The reference links do exist and they even pertain to the topic of the vandalized article (e.g Owen Wilson). But if you read or do a search within the referenced site, you won't find the phoney-baloney names or goofy facts that Charliesam123 tried to add to the WP article. This is rather shrewd vandalism. Respectfully -- WikiPedant (talk) 04:45, 22 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi WikiPedant! Thanks for leaving me a message! Ah okay, that helps. I thought that was what you meant -- that the reference URLs the user were providing were BS. Can you link me to a few example diffs of where this user blatantly does this so that I can take a look? ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 04:47, 22 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Right. At the site pointed to in this diff , there's no rugby player Ronan Eruini-Bennett who dated Rebel Wilson.
At the site pointed to in this diff there's no Simon Giordano Wilson or Lucas Greenslade Wilson. All baloney.

Yup... you were definitely correct. My apologies for the confusion over this. Since this user has not been warned for their behavior, blocking would be inappropriate. We always try to give users a chance to correct the behavior first. Because of this, I left an only warning on this user's talk page. If this user makes another edit like this again, please let me know and I will proceed with action. Thanks again for the heads up and for letting me know. I really appreciate it; I want to make sure that I do things right ;-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:12, 22 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
HA! Well, that didn't take long... not but one minute after being warned, the user made another edit without a reference and I've indefinitely blocked as a vandalism-only account. My sincere thanks and appreciation to you both for bringing this back in front of my plate :-) ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 05:14, 22 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the kind words, don't worry I try to edit only when I see something that seems a bit off and I edit it with what I see in it's place (in some weird, idoeological sense that exists way outside the moral spectrum completely).

Chitpavan Edit regarding why i removed some paragraphs

Respected sir, I want to clarify why I removed certain paragraphs from the article.I personally know members of the mentioned community and confidently say, that certain para were written with malicious intent. The references given are taken out of context from what the author(s) intended.Few things were written which were not related to the respective headings although factually correct if seen standalone. No other intention can be seen in doing such "errors" other than portraying the community in bad light. I know which community members are doing it but wont name them to avoid further conflict I can elaborate on the specific examples if u wish. Abcscholar (talk) 19:57, 22 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Pyrrhic War Reversion

Hi. You reverted my edits without saying why, other than you felt they were non-neutral in some way. Could you be more specific, please? I trimmed length, which isn't a matter of neutrality. The lead as it stands is godawful enormous; it practically refights the whole war. Palindromedairy (talk) 00:32, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Palindromedairy! Thank you for leaving me a message with your questions. The concern I saw was from this edit where you described Pyrrhus as "A skilled commander, with a strong army fortified by war elephants", and the term "Pyrrhic victory" as "so painful to the victor that it amounts to a hollow victory or even a long-term defeat". This doesn't appear to follow Wikipedia's policy on maintaining a neutral point of view. These were my concerns and why I reverted your edit. Please let me know if you have any more questions. I'll be happy to answer them and assist you. ~Oshwah~(talk) (contribs) 00:41, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I do not understand your concerns. Pyrrhus was and is considered to be a skilled commander: he won several battles against Rome after all, and not accidentally. This is no more POV than saying any commander was skilled: the proof is in the pudding (I would write the same for Hannibal or Philip V). The specific mention of war elephants is because they are commonly held to be a major factor in his early victories, and Rome's eventual ability to develop tactics to defeat them helped them win the final battle of the war: worth a mention even in a summational lead. As for your objection to the Pyrrhic victory definition, I'm doubly confused, because that's what a Pyrrhic victory literally is. This is how a state wins most of the battles and loses the war.
If you have no other issues, I'd like to restore my edits. Palindromedairy (talk) 00:52, 23 March 2017 (UTC)[reply]

LET ME BE REAL: my e-mail is shanahaymanhall@gmail.com

I am Whaley's daughter.

I am trying to contribute to his page. What you have to gain by adding my father to Wikipedia, I am not sure, but I can help in making it better.

Did you know my father?

Do you want birth certificates, death certificates? I have those on hand.

I give you this: My brother died 3 months after my father. http://wtkr.com/2015/06/19/motorcyclist-dies-in-crash-on-i-64-westbound/

My brother is buried at Arlington; he was buried on 10/7/15. He died on 6/19/15.

I am not trolling, but you seem to have my family's profile on lock-down and that does not make sense to me as I have no idea who you are.

I have images of his football card signed 3-4 months before he died. This is my family, it has been a mess, but I am trying to set it right, in font, properly, here on the inter-web.

sincerely, shana hall
