Boomerang refers to two television channels which air children's cartoons; Boomerang Africa (formerly Boomerang HQ)—which broadcasts in Sub-Saharan Africa, and Boomerang MENA—which broadcasts in the Middle East and North Africa, in addition to Greece and Cyprus.
Boomerang HQ was launched on June 5, 2005, broadcasting in select EMEA territories.
On July 1, 2016, Boomerang MENA was launched for the Middle East and North Africa to replace Boomerang Africa. In the Middle East and North Africa, Boomerang MENA is offered on beIN and numerous other miscellaneous providers; it is available in both English and Arabic, and broadcasts in HD as well. Boomerang MENA is also the version used in Greece and Cyprus. It has a separate schedule from Boomerang Africa, and features differing censorship rules as well.
History
Boomerang HQ was launched on 5 June 2005 as a channel for Europe, the Middle East and Africa. It originally broadcast in English, and also offered Polish and Hungarian audio tracks for Poland and Hungary respectively.
In December 2005, a Greek audio track was added on Greek and Cypriot TV providers.
Boomerang HQ's website for Sub-Saharan Africa was BoomerangTVAfrica.com, launched in 2010.[1] However, the website now redirects to BoomerangHQ.net.
In October 2010, the channel started broadcasting shows in Romanian on Romanian TV providers.
On October 12, 2011, the Central and Eastern Europe feed (Poland, Hungary and Romania) was separated from the HQ feed, featuring a distinct schedule (see Boomerang (Central and Eastern Europe)). From that point onward, a preschool block called Cartoonito was added to both feeds; the block was later removed from both feeds somewhere in 2014.
However, in the Benelux, Portugal, Middle East, Africa, Greece, Cyprus and the Czech Republic, Boomerang HQ continued to be offered on TV providers.
Boomerang HQ was available in Portugal until December 31, 2013, when it was removed due to the launch of the Portuguese feed of Cartoon Network. However, a European Portuguese-language version has been available in Angola and Mozambique since 2015, but has yet to be launched in Portugal.
On November 1, 2014, all TV operators in the Benelux and the Czech Republic replaced Boomerang HQ with Boomerang CEE, leaving Greece and Cyprus as the only European countries where the channel was still broadcast; from that day onward, Boomerang in the Benelux has been fully localized into Dutch.
In 2015, following the rebrand, Boomerang HQ began targeting viewers in Sub-Saharan Africa more frequently; it became known as Boomerang Africa instead.
On July 1, 2016, Boomerang MENA, a feed targeting viewers in the Middle East and North Africa, was launched, replacing Boomerang Africa. Boomerang MENA is available in HD, and is fully localized into both English and Arabic. Boomerang MENA is also available in Greece and Cyprus as well, with a Greek audio track for select shows.
The MENA website is BoomerangMENA.com, which was launched in August 2017. The website is available in both English and Arabic, using a "switch language" button to swap between the two languages.
Boomerang MENA and Africa will be renamed as Boomeraction in May 2019
