This is a list of nominated candidates for the New Democratic Party in the 40th Canadian federal election, which is nearly finished being tallied.[1]

Randy Wayne Dawe ran in the riding of Bonavista—Trinity—Conception in both the 1997 and 2000 federal elections. In 1997, he was the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada candidate and in 2000 he ran for the Canadian Alliance.[2]

She has worked with the Nova Scotia Division of Adult Education in the 1960s; Worked in Newfoundland as a teacher, developer of a music literacy program and consultant to the Department of Education; and for 10 years lived, studied and worked in England, Ireland and Sri Lanka. She is a graduate of Acadia University and has a PhD in educational administration from the University of Toronto. She was the NDP's candidate in the 2000 election in Esquimalt—Juan de Fuca.

  • Christine Moore is a coordinator. She was Coordinator of the Association étudiante en soins infirmiers du Collège de Sherbrooke. Served for more than three years in the Canadian military and Was coordinator of a tourist information booth in the Municipality of La Reine, Quebec. She studied health care at the Collège de Sherbrooke. She was the candidate in the 2006 election, where she finished fourth with 4,002 votes. She also ran in the 1993, 1997 and 2000 elections. In 1993 she ran in Chicoutimi, and in 1997 and 2000 she ran in Compton—Stanstead.
  • Alain Sénécal is an electronic technician specializing in telecommunications with Hydro-Québec. He was born in Montreal. He was the NDP candidate in the 2006 election as well.
  • Nourredine Seddiki is a professor of automatization, electronics and electro-technology at the Cégep de Sorel-Tracy.

  • Simon-Pierre Beaudet is a former radio host on CKIA and CKRL and is currently a bookseller. He has a masters degree in literature from Laval University. He was the NDP candidate in the 2006 election as well.

  • Gaston Langlais is a pilot. He is also a fisheries expert in fishing techniques and products processing, and has experience in the field of business administration. He has been director of the Société de gestion d'immeubles et de copropriétés (SOGECO), a property and condominium management corporation founded in Gatineau. He was also the manager of several businesses, a college instructor and member of professional associations. He additionally worked abroad for international organizations such as the World Bank and the Canadian International Development Agency. He ran for the Conservative Party of Canada in this riding in 2006.

David Carter Laird is a child protection worker with the Children's Aid Society of Toronto. He is a graduate from York University. He has run in Burlington in the 2003 provincial election, and both the 2004 and 2006 federal elections. He defeated David Abbott for the nomination May 8, 2007.

Max Lombardi (born December 7, 1967 in Lazio, Italy) is an information technologist. He has a Computer Programming Diploma from Humber College and a Print Journalism Diploma from Conestoga College. He defeated Fatima Pereira for the nomination on April 28, 2007.

Paul Arbour is a technical project manager with Nortel. He was born in Espanola, Ontario and studied computer programming at Canadore College.

Ron Cadotte

Peter Ferreira is an educator and advocate for new Canadians. He has served as the chair of the Dufferin-Peel Catholic District School Board. He is also the president of the Portuguese Canadian National Congress and the First Portuguese Cultural Centre. He has volunteered with the Ontario Mental Health Foundation and the Canadian Ethnocultural Council. He has also won the Governor General of Canada Commemorative Medal for community service. He was previously the party's candidate in the 2007 provincial election.

David Sparrow Actor, Writer and Producer, David has appeared in close to one hundred film and television roles including STAR TREK VOYAGER, SERENDIPITY and CTV’s CORNER GAS. He has written for the stage, the big screen and for CBC radio and has produced and directed a number of industrial and dramatic films.

Jason Bissett is the co-founder of a small business offering telecom, data and video services.

Justin Chatwin was born in Welland, Ontario in 1975 and has lived in Toronto for the past fourteen years. Currently completing his undergraduate specialist degree in Political Science/ English at the University of Toronto, Justin is a former professional actor and an award-winning community activist.

Justin's commitment to social justice was fostered early, when at age 13 he organized a fundraising drive at his junior high school for the survivors of Hurricane Gilbert. In 2004, Mr. Chatwin was presented with a Golden Seal acknowledging his international community service in the areas of homelessness and hunger relief.

Justin has volunteered extensively with McMaster Hospital, and he is the founder of Zine Nation, an organization that focuses on educating and engaging young voters.

He was nominated on September 14, 2008.

Taras Natyshak is a workplace health and safety director. He is the former manager of Acufit Fitness Centre/Place Concorde and co-founder of Summit Health and Fitness in Nelson, British Columbia. He studied political science and labour relations at the University of Windsor. He previously ran in the 2006 election.

Joseph Schwartz is a financial services representative. He worked in Etobicoke Centre at the time of the election. Mr. Schwartz has been a long time member of the party and served on the party's provincial executive. He has previously worked in the Arts and Culture sector, as well as the Co-op Housing sector.

Liam McHugh-Russell

Liam McHugh-Russell (born 1980) is a graduate (J.D.) of the University of Toronto Faculty of Law, and a graduate (Bachelor of Mathematics) of the University of Waterloo. He has been involved in the NDP for a number of years, and was involved in the Ontario New Democratic Youth, serving as Co-Chair for 2005-06. McHugh-Russell was involved in student politics at the University of Waterloo serving as Vice-President (Education) in 2003-04.

In the 2006 election, McHugh-Russell finished third behind Liberal Party of Canada candidate Michael Ignatieff and Conservative Party of Canada candidate John Capobianco. His mother, Margaret Anne McHugh, was the Ontario New Democratic Party candidate in the Ontario general election, 2003.

Jean-Sébastien Caron is a teacher of science at the l'École secondaire publique L'Héritage in Cornwall, Ontario. Born in Embrun, Ontario, he is a graduate of the University of Ottawa. He has run unsuccessfully for Russell Township council in the past. He won the nomination on May 31, 2007.

Oscar Cole-Arnal is the candidate for the NDP in the Kitchener Centre riding. Oz has been a Lutheran Minister for 42 years, and a professor of Theology at Waterloo Lutheran Seminary at Wilfrid Laurier University for 31 years.

He is married, and has two grown sons, three grown stepdaughters, and delights in his two grandchildren. For Oz both his politics and his faith are a way of life.

At present, he is active with the Holocaust Education Committee, the Waterloo Regional Labour Council and a member of the Waterloo Sanctuary Committee.

Oz was the founder and Chair of the Waterloo Region Interfaith Movement for Social Justice. He is also active in the Victoria Park Neighbourhood Association.

Rod McNeil (born June 11, 1960 in Kitchener, Ontario) is a businessman. He is the owner and operator of the karaoke service Karaoke Kommotion.

Sandra Willard is a home care worker. She has been a home care worker since 1992, and before that worked in nursing homes. She is a former president of her Ontario Public Service Employees Union Local. She was nominated January 27, 2008.

Steve Armstrong, a chemical controller. Ran for the NDP in the 2004 election. Finished third with 5,834 votes or 11.32%. Ran for the NDP in the 2006 election. Finished third with 7,945 votes or 15.26%. Nominated March 5, 2007.[12]

Stephen Homes is the vice president of the London District Labour Council. He has worked as a bus driver with London Transit for 34 years and is the president of the Amalgamated Transit Union, Local 74 and is an instructor with the Ontario Federation of Labour. He was born in London, Ontario.

Peter L. Ferguson is a scientist at the University of Western Ontario. He holds a PhD from the University of New Brunswick in microbiology. He won the nomination on September 9.

Nadine Hawkins is a businessperson. She has worked as a senior field auditor, primarily for small businesses on behalf of public accounting firms. She has an honour's bachelor degree in business administration from Brock University. She won the nomination by defeating Andy Arifin on February 24, 2008.

Born in Camrose, Alberta he moved to Campbellford, Ontario in 1997. He holds a B.Comm. from Queen's University and has a master of Industrial Relations from the University of Toronto. He ran in the 2006 election.

Kerry McManus is a teacher-librarian at Stratford Central Secondary School. She has a BA in French and Math at the University of Guelph and a BEd from the University of Waterloo. She is currently working toward a master of education with a diploma in environment and sustainability at York University. The candidate in this riding was originally Donna Hansen, who was nominated March 13, 2008, but she dropped out.

Steven Sharpe is a physics teacher at Lakefield District Secondary School. He is branch president for the Ontario Secondary School Teachers Federation. He attended the Trent-Queens Concurrent Education Program. He defeated Sean Cameron Holmstrom for the nomination on February 13, 2007.

Wess Dowsett is a staff representative for the United Steelworkers Union. Born in 1955 in Toronto, he has worked as a transport driver, transport vehicle accident recovery specialist and millwright mechanic in uranium mines in Ontario and Saskatchewan. He has also owned and operated a small retail pet supply store and animal boarding facility and owned and operated a successful restaurant. He ran in this riding in the 2006 election and lost. He was nominated June 13, 2007.

George N. Addison is a clergyman. He is a former peace organizer, journalist, truck mechanic and steel fitter. In 1985 he became an ordained United Church of Canada minister. Since 2002, he has been an ecumenical chaplain at Brock University. He has a BA from Western University, master of divinity, University of Toronto, an MA in religious history, Queen's University and is currently a candidate for a doctorate of ministry, Colgate Rochester Crozer Divinity School. He received the nomination on May 3, 2007.

Anita Agrawal is a manager of family-owned manufacturing and exporting business. Born in Montreal, she has a B.Sc. in biology and anthropology from the University of Toronto; and has a post-graduate diploma in e-commerce, from Centennial College. She ran in Etobicoke Centre in the 2007 provincial election.

Simon Dougherty. Stacy Douglas was originally nominated in 2007, but withdrew because she was completing her PhD in England at the time the election was called. Simon was nominated soon after the writ dropped. He has worked locally and nationally in health care, education, the arts, and with charities. He specialized in Film & Video Production and studied Political Philosophy to earn a Bachelor of Fine Arts with Honours at York University. Simon was on York's Inter-Faith Council in university and is a member of the Canadian Union of Public Employees, Local 79. Shortly after his family immigrated to Canada, they moved to Scarborough—Agincourt where they have lived for 25 years.

Natalie Hundt. The candidate originally nominated on June 5, 2008 was Carolle Gilgeous, but she dropped out.

Ryan Sloan works in retail.

Bruce Hyer is an ecologist, biologist, forester and businessperson. His company, WildWaters Nature Tours & Expeditions Ltd., retails and wholesales canoes and kayaks, and he has run a variety of wilderness adventures and ecotours from bases in Thunder Bay and Armstrong, Ontario since 1976. He was a consultant on forestry and tourism and served as an adjudicator on the Province of Ontario Environmental Appeal Board from 1988 to 1997. He holds a M.Sc. in forestry from Lakehead University. Ran for the NDP in the 2004 election. Finished second with 10,230 votes or 30.00%. Ran for the NDP in the 2006 election. Finished second with 13,601 votes or 34.96%. Nominated February 12, 2007.[14]

Fiona Shiells is a special assistant to a Manitoba cabinet minister. She holds a B.A. from the University of Winnipeg and is working to get her masters. She was nominated on September 9.

Niki Ashton, a researcher. Ran for the NDP in the 2006 election finishing second with 7,093 votes or 28.41%. Nominated January 27, 2007.[15]

  • Ron Strynadka is a retired Inco employee who currently operates a home-based family business. He was an active union member in Thompson, Manitoba with the Steelworkers Local. Nominated September 11, 2008.

Jim Maloway, former MLA for the provincial riding of Elmwood. Defeated Lorene Mahoney and Kevin Rebeck on September 7, 2008 for the nomination.

Ross Eadie, assistant executive director. Serves as a school board trustee in Winnipeg, Manitoba. Ran for Winnipeg City Council in 2006, but lost. Is blind. Defeated Evelyn Myskiw for the nomination on February 24, 2007.

Mohamed Alli is a building maintenance engineer for Bee Clean and also works for TruServ Canada. He was born in Guyana and is a labour and political studies graduate from the University of Manitoba. He defeated John Boehm for the nomination on September 11, 2008.

Bob Woloshyn is a businessman. He Worked for an industrial moving company in Southern California for almost two decades. He left to start his own business in the same industry and is currently a managing business partner and head of sales at Battlefords Supercycle.

Fred Kress is a political advisor. Currently employed as assistant to Kim Trew, MLA for Regina Coronation Park. He served as chief of staff a number of cabinet ministers in the Saskatchewan NDP government and as special advisor to Premier Lorne Calvert. He is also a former purchasing manager at the Regina Pioneer Village. He was born in Regina.

  • Brian LaBelle has been a child and youth care worker for the past 14 years. He has publicly stated he will donate $1000 a week of his MP salary to family and community support organizations if elected. Born in Edmonton, he studied child and youth care at Grant MacEwan College in Edmonton. [18]

He has a B.Sc. in geography and a Master's degree in Native American studies at the University of Lethbridge. He ran for the NDP in the 1997 election finishing fourth with 1,444 votes or 4.05%. Nominated March 4, 2007.

Wally Regehr, a retired educator. Ran for the NDP in the 1984 election. Finished second with 4,652 votes or 10.37%. Ran for the NDP in the 2006 election. Finished third with 3,598 votes or 8.04%. Nominated March 28, 2007.

Raymond Stone, a farmer. Ran for the NDP in the 2000 election finishing fourth with 2,069 votes or 4.61%. Ran for the NDP in the 2001 provincial election in Vermilion-Lloydminster. Nominated March 11, 2007.

Tim Robson, salesperson. Ran for the NDP in the 2006 election finishing third with 3,090 votes or 7.24%. He defeated Lynne Gendron and Jim Graves for the nomination on March 24, 2007.

Jeff Horvath, a teacher, he ran for the NDP in the 2004 federal election. He finished third with 4,009 votes or 8.49%. Nominated on April 28, 2007.[21]

Ran for the NDP in the 2006 election again in Saanich—Gulf Islands. Finished second with 17,645 votes or 26.54%. Defeated Elizabeth Woods for the nomination February 18, 2007[22]

Tish Lakes. Tish studied psychology at university and is the director of the Okanagan Advocacy and Resource Society, which advocates for people who need assistance navigating government programs for the disadvantaged. She is also a member of the ProBono Law society of BC.

  • Andrew Claxton is a teacher. He teaches English as a second language courses at an international school in Vancouver. He graduated from Simon Fraser University in 2004.

Zeni Maartman is a chartered insurance professional. She was born in Belize in 1957. She was a school trustee on the Nanaimo-Ladysmith School Board from 1996 to 1999.

Mike Bocking is a journalist with the Vancouver Sun. He studied political science and economics at the University of British Columbia. He is also a union president. He ran and lost in both the 2004 and 2006 elections.

Zoë Royer understands social needs. Zoe experienced the hardships of being a single mother struggling to make ends meet. As a health administrator, Zoe Royer spent her career working with people who care for people. Royer volunteered with many non-profit organizations and local schools. She is a former Director of the Golden Spike Days Society. With her 21 year-old daughter, Zoe Royer volunteered to serve homeless persons on night shift at a Tri-Cities shelter. Zoe hosted exchange students from Japan, Korea and Taiwan, for 2 to 3 years at a time, as a way to bring cultural diversity into her home and enrich the prejudice-free lives of her children. Zoe hosted Earth Day events at her home to build awareness for global warming and environmental protection. She is passionate about protecting the environment. Zoe Royer lives in Port Moody with her husband and two daughters.

David R. Caplan. Caplan originally lost the nomination on September 13, 2008 to Kirk Tousaw, but was made the candidate after Tousaw had to step down as the candidate. He pulled out due to "drug use issues". [2]

Ann Chambers is a community health worker. She was born in Scotland and has been a member of the B.C. Government and Service Employees Union for 18 years. She was nominated on September 11, 2008.

Ken Bolton is a former journalist. He was born in 1943 in Shawville, Quebec. He graduated from Oakridge Collegiate in London, Ontario and studied for a year at the University of Western Ontario. He has been both a producer and a host for the CBC.
