Order of precedence in Scotland

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is an old revision of this page, as edited by George Burgess (talk | contribs) at 18:09, 25 October 2016 (Gentlemen: New Lord Advocate, Advocate General). The present address (URL) is a permanent link to this revision, which may differ significantly from the current revision.

The order of precedence in Scotland was fixed by Royal Warrant in 1905.[1] Amendments were made by further Warrants in 1952, 1958, 1999 to coincide with the establishment of the Scottish Parliament and Scottish Government and most recently in 2012.[2]

The relative precedence of peers of Scotland is determined by the Act of Union 1707.

The orders of precedence for Gentlemen and Ladies are as follows:

Gentlemen

  1. The Sovereign (The Queen)
  2. Spouse of the Sovereign (The Duke of Edinburgh)
  3. The Lord High Commissioner to the General Assembly of the Church of Scotland, when it is in session (Lord Hope of Craighead in 2016)
  4. The Heir Apparent (The Duke of Rothesay)
  5. Younger Sons of the Sovereign
    1. The Duke of York
    2. The Earl of Wessex
  6. Grandsons of the Sovereign
    1. The Earl of Strathearn
    2. Prince Harry
    3. Viscount Severn
    4. Peter Phillips
  7. Brothers of the Sovereign (of which there are none)
  8. Uncles of the Sovereign (none living)
  9. Nephews of the Sovereign (Viscount Linley)
  10. Grandsons of former Sovereigns being Dukes
    1. The Duke of Gloucester
    2. The Duke of Kent
  11. Grandsons of former Sovereigns not being Dukes (Prince Michael of Kent)
nb: since there is no specific place in the order for a great-grandchild of the Sovereign (no matter how directly in line), Prince George of Cambridge must presumably take precedence as the eldest son of a Duke of the Blood Royal (see below).
