[edit]

EditPad is a text editor for Windows, created in 1996, by Jan Goyvaerts, then a civil engineering student at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, as Postcardware, requesting a postcard as payment.[3][6][7] EditPad 1.4.0 was released 16 January 1997; EditPad 2.3.0 was released 23 March 1997; EditPad 3.4.1 was released 2 January 1999.[8][9] With expanded functionality over Windows Notepad.exe, it is also a drop-in replacement, such that it can be renamed "Notepad.exe" and replaced in all locations that Windows Notepad.exe is found.[10][11][12]

EditPad

[edit]

Five products have been called EditPad, the original, retronymed Classic, 16-bit , Linux, Lite, and Pro. Maintenance of Classic, 16-bit , and Linux was discontinued.[13][14] Lite, and Pro continue to be developed. Classic, Linux, Lite, and Pro, all are available, in many versions, from either Jan Goyvaerts' websites or third-party download sites. Wine (software) enables Classic, Lite, and Pro use on on Unix-like operating systems.

Since EditPad is disk-based, files are not loaded in RAM, an unlimited number of files of any (large) size may be edited.[15][16][17]

EditPad 16-bit

[edit]

"The first 16-bit version was EditPad 16-bit 3.4.2, which was based on the source code of EditPad 3.4.0, heavily modified to make it work under Windows 3.1x. This version has been superseded by EditPad 16-bit 3.4.3, as the other version contained a few serious bugs. I am not planning to actively develop the 16-bit version, so there will not be any future 16-bit versions."—Jan Goyvaerts[71]

  • EditPad (16-bit) 3.4.3, 1999-11-30,[71]
  • EditPad (16-bit) 3.4.2, 1999-10-23, 267 KB; [73][74][89]

EditPad Linux

[edit]

EditPad Linux was first released in 2003,[citation needed] using Borland Kylix, a Linux software development environment which ran under Microsoft Windows, and the last EditPad Linux (5.4.6) was in March 2006, after Borland Kylix was discontinued.[90][91][92][93]

[edit]

Edit Pad Lite is the freeware version (free for personal use). [78][94][95][96] Third-party downloads have resulted in caching of out-dated versions.[97][98][99][100][101][102][103][104][105][106][107][108][109][110][111][112][113][114]
