B. victoriae[edit]

Cas, I don't suppose you can dig up a photo of B. victoriae? The article has two images, but both are intrinsic to the taxonomic history narrative, and I am loathe to remove either into the taxobox. By the way, you might like to have a read of the taxonomy section there; there's an interesting story there that you won't have read in anything of George's. Hesperian 13:43, 13 September 2007 (UTC)

I thought the same (re: baxteri). But Bentham gives them both as victoriae in Flora Australiensis, and if I trust anyone, I trust him. Hesperian 23:47, 13 September 2007 (UTC)
Curiouser and curiouser! I misread those sources - it is only the later seed that is attributed to Drummond. To be flowering in 1835 that seed must have reached England by 1832 at the latest. But Drummond didn't start sending plants and seed back to England until conscripted by Mangles to do so in 1835, and B. speciosa is not in Meissner's 1852 list of species collected by Drummond. As far as I know, Baxter only visited the south coast. I don't think Fraser went further north than the Swan River. Molloy never strayed far from Augusta. Hügel didn't reach Australia until the end of 1833; too late. Where oh where did those seeds come from? Perhaps they were B. baxteri; maybe that's why George has ignored the whole episode. Gosh this is exciting. Hesperian 00:38, 14 September 2007 (UTC)

I like your "sticky" archiving method — presumably this is still here because you are still planning on actioning it at some point? Don't worry; I haven't been holding my breath. I thought I should mention (if I haven't already??) that the mystery was solved by Melburnian at User talk:Hesperian/Archive 34#speciosa victoriae baxteri: it was baxteri really. Maotianshan shales and Chengjiang fauna[edit]

Hi, Casliber - I'm begging for favours again. The content of Maotianshan shales is currently 90% about the fauna and the Talk is all about the fauna. In a discussion around Sept 2006 about the name, all participants agreed "Maotianshan shales" is a misnomer for that content, but no-one got round to doing anything. "Chengjiang fauna" is also the name used at WP:CEX - if you look at the history you will see that it was added by Smith609 befor eI signe dup for WP:CEX.

I think the most appropriate "package" would be:

  • Maotianshan shales remains as the main place for the geography, geology, taphonomy, history of discovery, etc. of these fossil beds. If there any significant non-animal discoveries in the area, they can be noted in Maotianshan shales until there's enough material for separate articles. After that, Maotianshan shales continues to cover the shale as a fossil bed and also links together all the articles about biota found there.
  • An article "Chengjiang fauna" would get all the current Talk:Maotianshan shales and, initially, all the content. I would then copy into the "shell" of Maotianshan shales the parts that focus on geography, geology, taphonomy, history of discovery, etc. of the shales. Putting the animal fossils under "Chengjiang fauna" would follow the practice of the paleo journals, which sometimes mention in their intros that the critters were found in the Maotianshan shales but after that it's all "Chengjiang fauna".
  • The existing redirect of Chengjiang to Maotianshan shales should remain, until Chengjiang County becomes notable for something else as well.
  • Then I can also set up redirects to cover the alternative spelling "Chenjiang" - I briefly surveyed the paleo literature: both spellings are widely used although "Chengjiang" is the more common.

Thanks -- Philcha (talk) 09:31, 21 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi, I understand you've been busy, it seems to be the penalty for getting a good reputation. The desired result is:
  • "Chengjiang fauna" contains all the content and all the Talk, which is all about the fauna.
  • Maotianshan shales remains as the main place for the geography, geology, taphonomy, history of discovery, etc. of these fossil beds. Leave the current content in place and I'll eliminate the duplication.
Re whether controversial, which is a fair question, see WP:CEX, where the title on the to-do list is "Chengjiang fauna". This is also the term in the journals and at old version of "Cambrian explosion". The entry at WP:CEX was created by the other seriously active member, Smith609. I will not be in any way offended if wish to confirm this with him, although it might take several days - he may be on vacation (shocking!).
The backstory is that in early 2007 Cambrian explosion was accurate (written by a genuine academic, Graham Budd) but intelligible only to specialists. I set out to make it intelligible to ordinary readers, and got a lot of help from Smith609. We agreed the result (same as first "old version") was too long and tinkered a bit. Eventually Smith609 set up WP:CEX with the aim of creating a package of supporting articles so that Cambrian explosion would not have to do so much explaining. -- Philcha (talk) 20:55, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

Topic Selection[edit]

I chose spine apparatus because I found quite a bit of reliable information. However, I am also interested in an article on a species of fish. Do you think that would be easier?--Grander13 (talk) 14:06, 16 September 2008 (UTC) Alright, I'll try that. Thanks for the advice.--Grander13 (talk) 14:27, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Spine Apparatus[edit]

Hello. I am a tenth grade AP biology student that has been given the assignment to raise a biology related stub to GA or FA status. A stub that caught my attention was spine apparatus. If you could offer any advice on whether or not to choose this topic, or give me another biology topic that needs expanding, it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks. --Grander13 (talk) 01:45, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Radio galaxy[edit]

Could you explain why this article is rated C-class? I would be happy to improve it if there are specific, identifiable problems. Thanks. Mhardcastle (talk) 07:41, 23 August 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for your work on the inlining. I've had a go at the rest. Frankly I find the system Wikipedia uses for this very cumbersome -- if there were a way of separating the bibliography from the text and linking by means of tags that would be much closer to the way I normally work, and would allow me to generate the bibliography automatically from my database. But I agree that it needed doing. In fact this article needs many more references, but I have never got around to adding them because I knew that I would have to inline the existing ones first, and I had been put off by the amount of effort involved when I did active galaxy.
The answer to your question, by the way, is that the actual galaxies associated with the radio structures are normal galaxies -- usually giant ellipticals. There is a few lines on this in the body of the article but I've changed it to mention it at the top as well. Mhardcastle (talk) 09:49, 24 August 2008 (UTC)

I wonder[edit]

Would you be interested in reading this short article, and then this RfC? WhatamIdoing (talk) 02:39, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

Somewhat close to home really (job wise), I was just enjoying lunch so figured reading it was going to be straightforward.....groan....Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 03:05, 26 August 2008 (UTC)
I thought that leaving a note for you in particular might be slightly more discreet than a post at WPMED in general. It's my opinion that the overall result from the two available options is likely to be the same. If, however, you want to pretend that I wasn't here and you didn't see this, I'll go along with that.
Having said that, if you want your recent comment there to be visible, then you might choose to move it outside of the <!-- hidden section -->.

Le Grand Roi[edit]

Although LGRdC and I aren't the best of friends, I'm a bit worried about him. He's blanked his user and talk pages, adding a request that no one communicate with him (although subsequently he has continued to edit). He also created this extremely strange article. My first thought was that his account had been compromised, but some of his recent edits show that he's indeed in control of the account. I know you're not officially his mentor anymore; nevertheless, I think someone should get in touch with him to see what the problem is. Deor (talk) 16:17, 26 August 2008 (UTC)

Tricky- the juvie leaves could feasibly be integrifolia but are more serrated than is usual for that species, which is as common as muck, so if that is what they say they are, then they probably are. Other possibilities are B. seminuda or an unusual B. marginata. I will get someone to have a look. Some species are happy down to -12C and snow, but not for long periods. You can only try - in a pot or south facing wall maybe ok. How cold does it get where you are in Ohio? Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 04:10, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
Indeed, thanks. I wish I could find the seed packets, but they must have gotten shoved somewhere in the move last year. Oh, you don't have to get someone to look at it. Your best guess is just fine. I'm fine with being patient for it to flower. Average low temperatures around here are -10C for January, but the record low is -34C (hoping not to repeat that anytime soon), but last year's winter was relatively mild and low temperatures rarely dipped below -7C. Are there any cold-hardy cultivars out there? Thanks again! --Rkitko (talk) 12:06, 27 August 2008 (UTC)
The coldest I suspect are likely to be Banksia canei and Banksia saxicola - the latter is more vigorous. Seed of either may be hard to find...Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 14:02, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Hi. Did something change where we don't have to C-upload images for T:DYK? I did it yesterday too. I noticed that Commons images now show as blue links but I still they could be vandalized there, right? —Wknight94 (talk) 13:57, 28 August 2008 (UTC)

Okay, but remember, Grawp and the like look out for such things. Next thing you know, we have a penis on the main page! I'll try to keep a look out on refreshing DYK to take some of the load there... —Wknight94 (talk) 02:02, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
I have protected the WP page of the next image, but does it need to be protected on commons too? and I can't add teh pretect template for some reasonCheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 02:04, 29 August 2008 (UTC)
Here's the full story... Everything on our main page is automatically protected, but Commons image aren't on our main page - they're "shining through" from Commons. So the risk is that someone vandalizes Commons and then the vandalized image shines through on our main page. If you can get it protected on Commons, that's good, but usually we just upload the image here. As soon as it's uploaded here, it won't shine through from Commons, and once it's on the main page, it's automatically protected. It used to be that Commons images shining through looked like a red link so it was clear that the image lived elsewhere, but suddenly shining through images show up blue here. No idea why but it's probably what has thrown you off!  :) Let me know if you have any questions. —Wknight94 (talk) 02:11, 29 August 2008 (UTC)

Okay, now wait a minute. Did you do it again?! I think you did. That's four times in three days. —Wknight94 (talk) 01:36, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

Right - I didn't have anything to do with refreshing the last batch, including Image:Banning House, Wilmington, California.jpg. The one before was Image:Deianera.jpg, which I went to protect and noted it was already protected. Which one were you referring to? Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 09:20, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
The Image:Deianera.jpg one. Where was it protected? Not here. And not on Commons. Even if it's protected from creation here, that doesn't mean anything - it can still be vandalized on Commons. I'm not sure how else to explain this. You're very lucky that Grawp is not paying attention to the DYK image. —Wknight94 (talk) 15:22, 30 August 2008 (UTC)
Strange, I clicked on it to protect it and it gave me all the red writing at the top telling me about cascade protection. I must have misread it. OK, never again....Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 23:23, 30 August 2008 (UTC)

It's an interesting point[edit]

... that you bring up (continuing the discussion from OrangeMarlin's page, since it was starting to fork) -- that FAC confers a kind of stability on an article. Indeed. The articles that I've brought to FA -- not many, as it hasn't been my personal goal -- are much easier to defend from incoming crud, and I never thought about it before: I think you might be right. Other people are more likely to help maintain the standard. Typically I put together what I consider to be a "good" article and then move on to the next one, perhaps unjustly thinking that the GA and FA processes are more trouble than they're worth. My personal goal is that top google hit rather than the mainpage. I do have to agree with you that Sandy does a hell of a job, and puts up with a ton of crap. (But then most of us long-timers do ...) Rethinking GA/FA ... Cheers, Antandrus (talk) 01:47, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Yeah. It is a good reference point. For a couple of articles it has been relatively straightforward to check current vs. version at time of promotion, and scan down to see what is an improvement, and what is crud etc. or what has been surreptitiously removed by a sneaky vandal (a tricky problem with a 70+ kb article, and not that uncommon!). I must say I have a low threshold for semi-protecting some large articles indefinitely.
Furthermore GA has improved substantially after alot of input early last year, thus it can also act as a good staging point for FA now as well. Plus it is a great place to get detailed feedback..(reminds me, I must check PR more often). Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 03:43, 2 September 2008 (UTC)

Insert section name here[edit]

Hey, I generally find locking horns in the trenches can be come rather emotionally draining after a while, with folks often digging in to adversarial positions. Given the recent dustup with Peter Damian and this one, you may be getting your hackles raised more easily than you thought. I have been impressed at how quickly relations with opponents/the 'other side' at AfD can improve once moving away from the venue. Collaborative editing is a great remedy for this. Its something worth thinking about if you do find yourself slipping into adversarial mde too quickly. I'll see if I have time to look at the AfD backlog too. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 23:36, 1 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for the article pick for DYK: just a little bit of RPG/wargaming trivia but one which I was sure almost no-one would have known about and /was/ a major factor in the hobby despite humble appearances. Strange how a nine-digit $ value company can appear out of nowhere almost, too, off the back of chance occurrences.
Pity 'bout the gallery, but will live with that if no-go (discussing elsewhere: I thought those very specific cases were justifiable under NFCC as they tied in directly to the article content on encyclopedic grounds, but shall see if I read that wrongly, after all).

T:DYK uploading[edit]

Sorry, it's me again. I don't want you to get frustrated and quit updating T:DYK. You're doing a great job. I really want to explain this image uploading thing to you (since I had to cover it for the fifth time just now). So, imagine I hadn't uploaded the image to enwiki. Imagine if, instead, I had gone to the Commons page for the image. Look at that - completely unprotected. So I upload my favorite filthy vandalism image right over the top of that one. I go back to the front page of enwiki and there it is - my vandalism image right on the front page. Oh joy! Do you see what I mean? Someone could go do that now, but the image I just uploaded would still show ---- because I just uploaded it. I basically masked the Commons version because the Commons version is unprotected. The one I uploaded is protected. —Wknight94 (talk) 18:02, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

Hang on - I did download and then upload the shiek one and protect it (??). Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 21:58, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
Oh, hmmm. Looks like you uploaded with the wrong title. The image I uploaded is Image:Iron Shiek Milwaukee WI 031008.jpg - that was the one on T:DYK. The one you uploaded is called Image:450px-Iron Shiek Milwaukee WI 031008.jpg. Maybe you cropped and changed the name, but then accidentally used the original name on T:DYK. If so, that's an understandable mistake. —Wknight94 (talk) 22:51, 4 September 2008 (UTC)
OK, I see now, when I upload a duplicate from commons, it tacks on a prefix. OK I am now au fait with this and can see how to enusre nothing happens next time I upload/protect DYK image. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 23:41, 4 September 2008 (UTC)

I don't even remember how the page ended up on my watchlist, but the edits by PsychD throw up the usual red flags: 1) it's a WP:SPA 2) no rationale given for deletions 3) negative material selectively removed, etc. Yilloslime (t)

Inline refs[edit]

I love talk page stalkers (seriously! It makes one feel less alone when stressed). That's a brilliant idea, to have some kind of show/hide functionality. All those footnotes depress me, particularly in the lede of articles, since they make the article look like a term paper (I've graded so many ... oy.) Are there plans afoot to make this happen? DYK note[edit]

Thanks for the note, believe me I know there's a shortage of DYK admins, me and Borgqueen did practically all the updating single-handed for the last nine months!

I have decided to take a break from it for a while, if only because I'm currently trying to author a few new articles of my own, which is turning out to be quite a struggle as I have a lot of data but am not sure of the best way to break it down. I will probably start contributing a little to DYK again in a week or two if I can get some of these articles done. BTW I very much appreciate the way you have stepped up to take a lead on DYK over the last few weeks :) Gatoclass (talk) 04:31, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

True Blood[edit]

New vampire series on HBO in the US. I watched the first episode, and it's intriguing, though I'm not sure where the story is going quite yet. Anna Paquin stars in the show, and I believe she's from your part of the planet (meaning generally, not Oz itself). Anyways, I'm not sure when it hits TV in Oz, but you might find the story compelling. I'm not giving it 5/5 stars yet, but having vampires live in public amongst humans is really an interesting premise. OrangeMarlin Talk• Contributions 15:59, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Hello, I'm not sure where to bring WP:CIVIL issues (ANI seems overkill) and I saw you commented on the RfC about him (plus Wizardman is on a wikibreak) so to you it comes. On the Palin talk page Everyme has been rude and non-responsive [1].[2], [3]. I contacted him on his talk page, which he then deleted as trolling [4]. He's making accusations and refusing to explain them or respond in a civil way. Not sure there is anything that can be done about it, but I'm frustrated and wanted to rant somewhere. If nothing else, I'd like advice about how to deal with him. Thanks, Hobit (talk) 13:33, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Hobit - looking at it, I would concede that he has been, erm, blunt, but not incivil. There is a huge sense of frustration around this page, and upon looking at it I am thinking it is a great candidate for WP:LAME. There doesn't appear to be a clear consensus for change either. Furthermore, continued banter looks like Wikipedia:The Last Word. My problem is that I also disagree with you on this one unfortunately, as much as we are on the "same side" in RPG deletion debates etc. There are so many more worthwhile debates than this one srsly - nevermind, looks like the Democrats campaign is going to nosedive anyway so Sarah Palin will probably do ok without being first on the dab list anyway. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 13:52, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for the dose of reality. I needed it. That's two of these I've been in that folks think are good candidates for LAME. I guess I get worked up over things that I really shouldn't. Not a good sign. Thanks again! Hobit (talk) 13:59, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Btw, I wonder if the pictured hooks can be unpictured and another one gets pictured during showtime? Mspraveen (talk) 15:05, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Not sure what I'm seeing[edit]

The need to move a page just struck home. I'm working on an article that should link to Briggs Initiative, but that page is a disambiguation to California Proposition 6 (November 1978), which is a redirect to The Briggs Initiative, the target article. Seems to me the article should drop the "The" from the title, California Proposition 6 (November 1978) should remain a redirect, and The Briggs Initiative should also be a redirect. It seems unnecessarily convoluted, unless there's something I'm not seeing. --Moni3 (talk) 15:44, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Nope - you are right, but conserving hisotyr is important so this is what to do.

This way all history is preserved. I hate today as it is a headless chook day. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 23:31, 9 September 2008 (UTC)

Really? Why not move Briggs Initiative to Briggs Initiative (disambiguation)? The Briggs Initiative is probably better off as a redir and not a dab. Guettarda (talk) 23:41, 9 September 2008 (UTC)
gah! That's what I meant. I have sloppy grammar when I am running around like a headless chook. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 03:55, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
Chook = chicken? Guettarda (talk) 04:33, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
indeed. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 04:35, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
Interesting. In Trinidadian English, chook is a verb, and it means to get pricked with a thorn or pin (+ figurative meanings, in the sense of poking at an ant hill or wasp nest, or sexual connotations). There is also a very very slight distinction between "chook" and "jook", although the pronunciations are almost identical. No clue about etymology. Guettarda (talk) 04:59, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
Funny, like the perennial chestnut/verb "pissed" - means "drunk" in Oz, "annoyed" in US..confused my US rels no end. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 05:02, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

FA count[edit]

Rick's response/explanation at Wikipedia talk:List of Wikipedians by featured article nominations#Cas Liber and Vampire: inspired me to fix a couple of misinformations that were bugging me. I've taken the liberty of adding you to the B. integrifolia entry at Wikipedia:Featured articles promoted in 2006, as I think it at least as much (more really) yours as mine. And I've added myself at B. brownii, which was attributed solely to Gnangarra. I haven't added your name anywhere else, because I'm not sure which ones you would want to claim. You will of course rest assured that I couldn't care less where you put your name. ;-) Hesperian 00:26, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

Um, I did this before the issue became slightly heated. If you think I've dragged you into an dispute unnecessarily, say the word and I'll revert myself. Hesperian 04:00, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
(sigh) damned if I do and damned if I don't....may as well join in the fun of such a serious topic. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 04:06, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
Hey, sorry about creating an issue about the above issue. I'm only saying this because I think that things should only go by the nominator - I certainly wouldn't want anyone plastering my name to anything like Hesperian has done above (in good nature of course!), even if it meant there was more gain for myself. And I certainly would be pissed if someone added Sheep's name to your nom after the fact. It's just not considerate and I was merely pointing this out - in no way is this meant to be a personal attack on yourself, as you know that the vampire article is as much mine as it is yours. It's quite a minor issue - a nice, easy discussion to start me back at wikipedia... : ) How have you been? I see you've done quite a few more FAs since I've been OOA. Maybe we can start on pork or something else (to be honest, pork bores me). Cheers, Spawn Man (talk) 04:48, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

Hmm, article's looking good. Just make sure the next article you choose isn't as big as my mistake with vampire - that article was waay too big and really spent me. But now coming back to look at it, it looks okay - maybe the whole origins of vampires parts need fixing however... Cheers, Spawn Man (talk) 05:37, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
The other one I had intended on doing that you may be interested in is werewolf, though I just thought that a bio like Bruce Campbell may be fun too. DYK is desperate for helpers and there is a shortage of admin help. I suggested to one of the regulars I would nominate them for adminship. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 07:39, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
Is that last part for me...? (Adminship for DYK guy...??) Yeah, a bio would be cool. Andre Kertesz was a good practice, but can you think of anyone dead as living bios usually come up with problems (libel, updating, lots of vandalism etc...). Not werewolf, maybe later - I can sense that being huge like vampire too. Unless you can assure me it won't be, in which case I'll hop on board... Spawn Man (talk) 08:38, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
I don't think werewolf will be so big. I would hazard a guess at maybe 50-75% but may be wrong. If you stick around DYK may be a good move. dunno, dino is quiet, at Birds we are trying to rack up 50 FA bird articles.. :) Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 08:50, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
DYK is too hectic for me right now - I just want to get in the swing of things first before getting into the wikipedia namespace. Dino is very quiet... Too quiet... I've got a couple of articles I want to do, but I'll definitely get on board with werewolf if we start pretty soon. But be aware, I'm not going to let myself get burnt out on this (or any) article like with vampire, so if things get rough, I'm gonna take a step back. Anyway, glad to see you've racked up so many FAs and have kept everything chugging. Spawn Man (talk) 08:57, 10 September 2008 (UTC)
Damn you and your straw polls... ; ) Nobody ever sides with me despite my brilliant arguments... Okay, I'll go get some werewolf books from my library... : ) Spawn Man (talk) 09:02, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

Newcomer Award[edit]

Thank you for the kind note you left on my talk page the other day. My sons and I have had a good time this summer visiting LA's hisotric sites and buildings, writing articles about them, and otherwise participating in the project. As for applying for "admin-ship", I'm not sure how much time I'll be able to contribute on reliable basis going forward, but am interested in the possibility. Is there a page that reviews the procedure and the duties? Cbl62 (talk) 16:17, 10 September 2008 (UTC)

I got your note and am thinking about the admin process. As for disputes, since starting to do work on the project in about April 2007, I can think of only two "dispute" that have come up, one over a proposal to delete an article about a church I had written (which was ultimately denied), and the other about my use of two sentences verbatim from a university web site describing the official qualifications for admission into the University of Michigan Athletic Hall of Honor. I had used the verbatim language to avoid mis-stating the official qualifications and cited the web site as a source, but I didn't (and should have) put quotation marks around the two sentences at issue. In any event both of those issues were resolved, and I don't think it was anything that would have left someone holding a grudge.Cbl62 (talk)
After thinking it over and getting another suggestion from Wizardman, let's give it a try. If you or Wizardman were to nominate me, I would be happy to go through the process and help out as much as time permits.Cbl62 (talk) 17:55, 14 September 2008 (UTC)

Parithimar Kalaignar[edit]

Firstly, thank you very much for selecting my article to use in the main page as DYK. I hadn't expected it so early. However, I observed that the hook suggested by me had been discarded and an alternate hook has been choosen. The ALT hook had been suggested as the editor was not aware of the content of the material I had provided as source. However, I had sufficiently established the correctness of the fact in the hook I had suggested through relevant reference. Still, I observe that the alternate hook has been selected. I don't know why. Anyway, thanks :-)-RavichandarMy coffee shop 21:04, 11 September 2008 (UTC)

I think I've never said thank you for staying in touching and occasionally looking over my edits. Admittedly, my initial gut reaction several weeks ago when I saw you popping up in some places I'd been was "the fucker is stalking me!!". But I actually appreciate it very much since it exerts a bit of pressure to put... well, at least not my very worst side forward. With mixed results, but nevertheless. Thanks. user:Everyme 08:51, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

You'd be surprised how much wikistalking goes on; some extremely obscure pages I have edited have had others pop in on, and ditto me with other folks. The vast social experiment of wikipedia is highly amusing, and one often learns as much about oneself as much as other people. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 10:31, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
Well, I for one am largely indifferent towards any criticism of myself, and am basically in it to impose my will and ideology on others, just as IRL. The main problem is that many just aren't smart enough, or somehow refuse to learn quicker— which is why Wikipedia resembles U.S. public discourse to such a chilling extent. I wonder where that analogy places myself however. user:Everyme 10:43, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
I suspect that's why many editors are here, that and the idea of 'encyclopedic graffiti', similar to blog graffiti or messageboard graffiti really. about changing the pace and lightening up the mood..let's talk about abortion....hahahahahhaha (Bill Hicks quote) though I do wonder whther all that bottled up anger gave him pancreatic cancer, oh heck, wasn't exactly bottled up, was it? Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 10:53, 12 September 2008 (UTC)
I suspect it may also have to do with his cigarette consumption... although he was not at peace with the way the world is run and all medically valid considerations aside, it's somehow plausible that this contributed to his far too early demise, if only to keep in with the Rock myth (and partly formative spirit) of only the good die young, which in turn was and is one of the greatest things about him: that he actually didn't really distinguish between private self and persona. "I want my rock stars dead!!" user:Everyme 11:34, 12 September 2008 (UTC)

This doesn't seem to be occuring and I'm honestly having trouble with the "assume good faith" considering what does appear to be happening. Thanks. Jasynnash2 (talk) 14:41, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

I'm not asking for a second opinion so much as for feedback on this -

Straight text (no figures, no headers): 1675 words, 8939 characters. After the "general" information (reproductive behaviour that's sourced to general references, information about taxonomy of the genus and subgenus) I have 1451 word, 7684 characters. So what do you do with a review that says "90% of the content concerns figs in general, not Ficus maxima"? Any thoughts? Guettarda (talk) 17:23, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Sorry about asking for input and then disappearing. Thanks for your input. Guettarda (talk) 19:50, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

I've started editing werewolf (I'm assuming you'll arrive soon...?). I'm going to use the same article format as Vampire, which should work pretty well. I've got a couple of books here, but I'll have to get more from the library. Meet me on the talk page when you're done doing whatever you're doing, and we can discuss what information the page needs and what can go. Also, if we're both going to get credit for any article we do together, why don't we just co-nominate our articles (rather than your turn, my turn) to save confusion later on. I mean we've already both gotten the credit for vampire, let's just make it a partnership. And that way the person not nominating won't feel so bummed at the end either or feel like leaving... Give it a thought, but I have a lot of spare time over the next month, so let's put it to good use on the article. Cheers, Spawn Man (talk) 00:40, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

I like the idea of identical layout for conformity, and co-nomming (easily justifiable for bigger articles anyway). I wil turn up soon. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 00:44, 16 September 2008 (UTC)

Images in the archive[edit]

I notice that you never link to the lead hook image when archiving DYK. Do you have a particular reason? Actually I find it a sort of counter-productive to follow you around and fix what you missed. --BorgQueen (talk) 02:12, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

My bad, I have generally done that bit in a rush. As you may have guessed, neatness is not my strong point (should see my house :) ). Is there a policy on it? Actually, shouldn't it remain linked even though archived? Duh, the link isn't in the italicized word. OK, will do from now on. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 03:12, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Joe Sernio[edit]

I apprecaite your help with my page Joe Sernio i can use further assistance in this. I want to save it from being deleted. All of my information that was well referenced as should be has been deleted, and removed. I feel it is unfair that this has happened in result of others trying to update my page thinking they were doing a good deed in result of someone on wikipedias end thinking it was false information. All my work i have worked very very hard on, and Wikipedia has been an unbelievable source for casting directors, friends, and fans to read on my career. I can use some help as i spent an amazing about of time on this page, and to see now everything has been edited and or removed. If i start adding it again will it get removed due to someone person not thinking it is legit? Is there a backup copy of the page, or if i have one can i post it back up? Thank you in advance for your help, and i appreciate your time. Joe Sernio-- (talk) 19:16, 17 September 2008 (UTC)

Good idea. Are you really going to take on the depressive article? That is a major piece of work. Anyway, I've been quite swamped of late, but will try to help out if I have time for more than drive-by responses to the usual (f)lamewars. Eusebeus (talk) 02:58, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

...a most interesting idea. Thank you for the alert! You caught me being quite depressed in general about the state of Wikipedia: it seems (entirely subjectively) that we spend so much time playing defense, and so many once-fine and no longer watched articles are eroded by tiny corrosions and nit-additions, that our overall quality has leveled off, and the improvements to existing articles plus new articles seem approximately to balance out the bad. (I really want to be wrong.) When I do a random-page test, I get an incredible amount of stubs. So focusing on improving existing articles is a splendid idea. By the way, I regularly look at the NewArtBot's "good" result, since it does a pretty good job of finding decently-written new articles. By my admittedly personal, subjective, non-consensus, and entirely indefensible opinion, I see about twenty new decent articles per day, and then tons and tons of stubs and starts that consist of a line of text and a widget. Have you looked at numbers to get an overall sense? I'm definitely interested in the little challenge though. Cheers! Antandrus (talk) 03:06, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

Image:St Volodymyr's Cathedral facade.JPG[edit]

Did you tag Image:St Volodymyr's Cathedral facade.JPG with {{C-uploaded}}? You are not supposed to use this tag unless the image is actually copied from commons. The image didn't exist at commons, and when I deleted it while cleaning up I saw a dreaded red link. Please use {{mprotected}} for images that only exist here on English Wikipedia next time. I am not sure what we can do about the destroyed image, since deleted images cannot be restored from Wikipedia server as far as I know. --BorgQueen (talk) 12:27, 18 September 2008 (UTC)

D&D articles for Wikipedia 0.7[edit]

Hi there! :)

As someone who's worked on D&D and/or RPG articles before, I'm inviting you to participate in our goal to both improve articles that have been selected to be placed in the next Wikipedia DVD release, as well as nominate more to be selected for this project. Please see the WikiProject D&D talk page for more details. :) BOZ (talk) 12:29, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Good point on Dragon - I don't know why I hadn't even thought about that one! Care to help me get some discussion going in the talk page thread - it's been like pulling teeth so far.  ;) BOZ (talk) 12:51, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

FA push for Ring-tailed Lemur[edit]

Since June 2008, I have been making a strong push to take Ring-tailed Lemur to FA status. Just recently, it was rated as GA. I am currently looking for support on my FA proposal, in case you're interested. (FYI: I've referenced the Lion page you've worked on as a guide for some of my work.) I know I have a lot left to do, but this article is my top priority. Would you be willing to help out? - Visionholder (talk) 21:33, 19 September 2008 (UTC)

Sorry for not editing werewolf these past few days - been pretty swamped with other stuff. I hope to make it back for next week, but in any case, I'll wait for you to merge lycanthrope into the article (wouldn't want to lose any edits). It always gets me nervous however when tonnes of people jump on board as is already starting to happen - things get stressful and prolonged. Andre Kertesz was good cause I was like the only one who knew the article existed ;) but I hope that werewolf isn't going to be a hassle with so many people now entering. I'm guessing you're more of the "the more the merrier" type, so I'll save my gripes. Anyway, c ya. Spawn Man (talk) 07:35, 20 September 2008 (UTC)

Damn internal errors - the sites been strange lately... Spawn Man (talk) 07:40, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
Don't worry - most of those people are just voting on the name. I think most will give it a rest once we really get started, and yes I was leaving it a bit until there was clear consensus on a merge and then get stuck into merging. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 07:56, 20 September 2008 (UTC)
I went to the library today and got 3 more books - we may even chance across the same ones as we did with vampire. I'll start work as soon as you've merged (if you already haven't...?). Cheers, Spawn Man (talk) 03:14, 21 September 2008 (UTC)
Now merged. Go for it. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 10:23, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Can you do me a favor and look over Horse and tell me what you think? We (the Equine Wikiproject) just put it up for GA, and it was quickfailed because it did not fit the "mold" of the other species articles. (I also suspect some personal issues but that's neither here nor there). We're probably going to take it to GAR, but we may just skip GA and take it to PR and then FAC, so we can avoid the one reviewer can fail an article for their own vision of the article problems. However, I'd appreciate second opinions, if possible. Sandy suggested I ask you ... Ealdgyth - Talk 00:20, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks Cas. One reason we dont' worry so much about the traditional orgranization is that it's a domestic species, we were looking at Domestic sheep as somewhat of a guide. And your suggestions are greatly appreciated, we'll work on those! Ealdgyth - Talk 01:05, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

vandal has graduated to my talk page[edit]

Hi Cas—You remember the anon vandal who's been stopped from attacking Robert Gilbert (chemist)? Then, the talk page of that article? Now, s/he has realised that my talk page can be vandalised. I wonder whether three instances in a day an a half require semi-protection? If so, my user page will no doubt be the next port of call, so I guess both talk and user pages would be in question. Tony (talk) 10:51, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Fine. done. I'll leave it up to you whether you want to place a semi-protection tag on it. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 10:59, 21 September 2008 (UTC)

Refs clean-up on Ring-tailed Lemur[edit]

I am currently working on the references for Ring-tailed Lemur per your suggestion. However, Rlendog requested some clarrification on the talk page, and your reply would help me greatly. I'd like to post the changes today, so if you get a chance, I'd greatly appreciate a speedy reply. (If you're busy, then don't sweat it.) - Visionholder (talk) 17:31, 23 September 2008 (UTC)

Thanks for nominating and supporting me through the RFA process, Casliber. I would like to take a shot at my first full DYK update in the next couple days and I was wondering if there's a guide that walks through the process of (a) moving the hooks from Next Update to the Main Page, (b) how to create the credits, (c) archiving the hooks from the prior group, and (d) anything else you think I should now. If you know of something that would help, let me know. And thanks again. Cbl62 (talk) 05:46, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Look at my talkpage above, I often get it wrong too. If you follow the steps and look at BorgQueens you should be right. Just remmber the preview button, and to take real care with the images (i.e. need to upload a duplicate, protect it, and tehn dleete it afterwards.). Gotta run. I'll be back later. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 07:54, 24 September 2008 (UTC)

Hold up[edit]

Temper, temper! Culling through the junk that accumulates here is an important task too, even when you don't necessarily agree on what that means. Eusebeus (talk) 01:27, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

So TTN and KWW are allowed be the ones that say, "Jump", and the rest of us say,"How high" - all the time?????. No, sorry, collaborative editing doesn't work that way. It is just wrong. Respect has to be earnt, not asked for. What, they live on a desert island and have no access to refs at all? I have more respect now for others that are versatile in their efforts, you are one of the best copyeditors on the project period, Sgeureka and Judgesurreal have played an important part in writing FAs.
I am frustrated with both sides, you-know-who-on-my-side-of-the-fence's recent escapades with sockpuppets, but at least he and I would make an attempt to look for sources, which many don't. Anyway....(long exasperated sigh)...time for lunch and more caffeine anyway. 01:42, 25 September 2008 (UTC)

Parqués answers[edit]

First of all, thanks for your useful review on Parqués article and for your questions. It has made me think that I will try to lead that article in a way to show the game's importance to the world, as you suggested. I am glad that the article looks nice by now.

Also, I answered your useful questions at the talk page and added some content to the article, using some of my answers. Davichito (talk) 03:34, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Holy Grail Merge[edit]

Hi Casliber You know I respect your views quite a bit (gnash gnash). So do this for me. Can you revisit this debate and see if you might support a merge to a generalised spinout article that would cover the topics, currently listed individually. Aside from my own prejudices in the larger debate, I think it's a good compromise and your input would be valuable. If you genuinely feel that a set of independent articles is the better road sobeit. But I also know that you are sensitive to the problem of the accumulation of unencyclopedic fan-driven enthusiasm to this kind of topic. KWW has done some good work parsing the lengths of the existing articles and has offered some solid analysis. While some editors may remain ideologically bound, I'm hopeful that you might be swayed by the logic. Or am I just a foolish optimist? Eusebeus (talk) 04:21, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

I have been out and diverted on other more appealing tasks...(sigh)..I need to sleep now but will try to revisit the issue tomorrow. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 15:20, 29 September 2008 (UTC)

Tulip mania a go go[edit]

They finally put Tulip mania up on the "Today's Featured Article" schedule for tommorrow (almost today)! With today's (yesterday's) vote on the bailout plan and -777 on the DJIA, it looks like it's gone up on probably the most interesting day possible!

I've read Wikipedia:Wikipedia Signpost/2008-06-09/Dispatches on how to monitor changes during the day. Will you join in on monitoring?

We'll see what happens. Frankly, I expect that there might be some problems with people calling today(y) a crash of unprecedented proportions, the sky is falling, and saying the article has an ostrich-like POV. Not to get too defensive, but there are a few "Crash crazies" out there. I worked a lot on an article that became known as January 2008 stock market volatility trying to convince people that the world had not ended on Martin Luther King's birthday. (See the 1st day's edits, the article then was known as Black Monday (2008)).

Well, it could be interesting. Any help appreciated.

Salvia divinorum semi-protection[edit]

I support semi-protection here, preferably long-term. I have better ways of spending my time than fixing petty vandalism. The salvia article is in a mature state. Anonymous edits which aren't vandalism or spam tend to be only minor grammatical tweaks anyway, so the potential gains from good faith edits don't seem to out way the damage done by vandals. Many thanks :) --SallyScot (talk) 18:55, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

Hi Casliber, would you consider adding at least one more hook to the most recent T:DYK update? Hi Casliber - I left a query at Reliable sources noticeboard yesterday but as yet it hasn't been answered. As you have an interest in rugby league, I wondered if you would have time to give me an opinion? Cheers, Florrieleave a note 04:23, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

Interesting - answered there but first link is 404ed. Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 04:32, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for looking, Cas. Not sure what happened to that link, even more reason not to use it, I suppose. As far as I could gather when I visited the site it was a personal/community blog thing with members posting about player transfers/movements and the blog admin updating a list. Nothing to show it was an authority of any standing. Florrieleave a note 05:40, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
That link to the blog appears to be working again, if you would like to have a look. Cheers, Florrieleave a note 12:06, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
Wow, useful little blog to keep abreast of things, but these recent changes should be able to be sourced to a newspaper or even official club site. I can't figure out who wrote the blog as if it were written by a published author I think we could use it. My team went completely down the gurgler anyway...Cheers, Casliber (talk · contribs) 12:19, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
Totally agree, but another editor is persistently using the link despite my pointing out reliable sources. News links are usually easy enough to find. I just wanted another opinion, really. Thanks! Commiserations on your season, my Tigers did only slightly better. Florrieleave a note 13:00, 6 October 2008 (UTC)
I guess I personally wouldn't push too hard until it is going for GA or FA, and finding more is a better way of negotiating than nixing others..
I doubt there is any chance any of the articles will ever get beyond stubs! I'm off on a wikibreak anyway, had enough of all the tendentious editing and it's time to step back. Many thanks for your input, though. If you get time, pop in to rugby league talk, they could always do with a fresh perspective! Cheers, Florrieleave a note 13:39, 6 October 2008 (UTC)

aussie bio article seeks friendly reviewers![edit]

G'day Cas - hope you're well.. I thought I'd pop in here because I've just started work on an aussie bio article at John Ogden (photographer) and wondered a) whether you'd mind taking a look and b) to see if you might be aware of the best / most active noticeboard/s or wiki-projects to pester about getting some more hands on deck.... 'rtfm' would be an appropriate response if you're busy, but I thought I'd ask anywhooo... cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 01:14, 9 October 2008 (UTC)

thanks heaps! let me know if I can return the favour anywhere :-) cheers, Privatemusings (talk) 01:57, 9 October 2008 (UTC)
