Question on uploading images

[edit]

Thanks for the welcome. I too am a Nascar fan. How bad have I got it? Real bad. They could make one of those commercials based on the walls of my basement. I am also very new to Wikipedia. I have been surfing through various driver wikipedia pages and noticed that they lack pictures. It just so happens that I had pit passes to the Phoenix race a couple of weeks ago and I took tons of pics of drivers, cars, pit crews, etc. I am not a pro photographer and would love to upload the best of these pics to Wikipedia for use on drivers pages. As I am finding out, it takes hours and hours of digging on Wikipedia to figure out how to do this. I don't have hours and hours to spare, so could you do me a favor and possibly break it down for me on how to upload and how to navigate the complicated copyright info I need to include. From what I have read so far, I think all of these pics are totally ok to upload because I took them, I have no intention of making money off them, and they are high quality and relevant. For example I have a closeup of Jimmie Johnson sitting in his car during the red-flag on the next to last lap at the Phoenix race. It shows Harvick's car right in front of him. It's a sweet pic. I look forward to hearing from you if you get a chance and if you know the answers to my Q's. BHFeller 16:19, 24 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Hi: I just attempted my first upload of images. I then tried to edit the Jimmie Johnson page and put in a picture under his 2006 season section. Can you please see if I did it right and fix it if I didn't. Thanks!

Dumbing Down of Articles

[edit]

Thanks for continuing to support the dumbing down of America! Modor 16:37, 22 December 2006 (UTC)Modor Yeah, well...sometimes the truth hurts. It is the same style I use when I pen my NASCAR articles. Haven't been around that sport too long either, have you? Modor 07:49, 29 December 2006 (UTC)Modor[reply]

Evernham Motorsports article

[edit]

I need to ask an opinion of you. In the third paragraph of the "#19 car history" section, it mentions the supposed relationship between Ray and Erin. I don't have a problem with it there, but the sentence itself seems a bit one-sided. Should the sentence be reworded to seem more neutral or what? Or does it even hold any relevance to the #19 car at all?

Thanks!Captain Spyro 22:26, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the help. I edited the sentence in question and would like to know what you think of it; if it doesn't bother you, of course.Captain Spyro 01:04, 29 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Alright, it seems that my attempt to have this guy banned has failed. I requested it twice. The first time, my request disappeared without a reason and the 2nd was denied by the admin; stating that is was only a 'content dispute' and not vandalism involving personal attacks. He pointed me to the 3RR policy and if our 'friend' breaks that policy, he can be reported there. However, not sure if you want to give the banning a shot, but meh. *Shrugs.*Captain Spyro 22:54, 7 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

For some reason, I had a feeling I was familiar with you. ;) But yeah, I won't bother with that mess at least until the end of this semester. I have too much stuff to worry about on that end to be annoyed with the relationship mess. He's reedited the article again, but I'll just wait it out for now. *Shrugs.* Thanks for your help in the matter! Captain Spyro 02:17, 8 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Concordia Newsletter

NEWSLETTER

Concordia is currently trying to relaunch. I, and all the members of the ex-council, wish to welcome new members to the group. We are a group who aim to promote remaining civil, in an environment where messages can easily be interpretated wrongly.

Help out now!

[edit]
  • Try and help people remain civil! Talk to them, and help them in any way possible. Do not be afraid to use the talk page.
  • Give people the Civility Barnstar.
  • Make and spread some Wikitokens so people know there are people to help if they want assistance.
  • Add banners or logos to your userpage to show your support.
  • Suggest some ideas! Add 'em to the talk page.

We are a community, so can only work though community contributions and support. It's the helping that counts.

Decision Making

[edit]

The council expired one month ago, but due to the current position of the group the current council will remain until the position of the group can be assessed, and whether it would be sensible to keep Concordia going. For most decisions, however, it will be decided by all who choose to partake in discussions. I am trying to relaunch because of the vast amounts of new members we have received, demonstrating that the aims are supported.

If you wish to opt of of further talk-page communications, just let us know here.

[edit]

Hello, I noticed an innaccuracy on Jeff Fuller's page listing his first cup owner as Patricia Bandyul. It really was Patricia Bandzul, along with her husband Scott Bandzul. I'm mentioning this because I see you changed it back, most likely because thats how it is listed on Racing-reference.info . Scott and Patty Bandzul owned Modifieds in the northeast for many years with drivers like Jeff Fuller, Steve Park, and Rick Fuller. Hope this Clears things up. -- Bca617 06:40, 3 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned fair use image (Image:55napa-drivercard.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:55napa-drivercard.jpg. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable under fair use (see our fair use policy).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Iamunknown 06:33, 3 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. I just wanted to note that there is a vandal on the List of NASCAR drivers page. He seems to be eliminating the drivers' stats. Good talking with you again. I notice that you added Farmer's birthdate. I am found many sources with varying birthdates for him when I originally started the article, so I think we should change it back to a version with an ambiguous birthdate. Help: Former NASCAR drivers category

[edit]

It seems like someone wants to merge this into the NASCAR drivers category. We had resolved this, but now it is a case again. Please help support the category. We've put too much work into it to let some people who have no idea how crucial it is to the organization of the NASCAR wikiproject to reverse. Casey14 21:06, 11 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well it seems like we lost this battle. I really don't understand the reason of the merge. I will not be working on any former drivers lists in the Wikiproject in a protest to the merge. Now our work will be ten times harder, and ten times lengthier. It is a lot easier for people to say something that they don't have to do. Casey14 23:09, 21 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The change hit my watchlist hard too. I see nothing wrong with requesting or even demanding help from the people that voted to force the merge to fix the implications of the merge. Especially when you guys clearly explained the problems IMO. They shouldn't expect that their ambiguous abstract explanation will fix everything. Royalbroil T : C 03:28, 22 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image:JustinLabonte.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:JustinLabonte.jpg. I notice the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{Replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace the fair use image by finding a freely licensed image of its subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or a similar) image under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our fair use criteria. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that any fair use images which are replaceable by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. ˉˉanetode╦╩ 23:19, 27 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned fair use image (Image:Bdr.gif)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Bdr.gif.

Thank you. BetacommandBot 20:46, 11 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, D-Day. An automated process has found and removed an image or media file tagged as nonfree media, and thus is being used under fair use that was in your userspace. The image (Image:Godzilla.jpg) was found at the following location: User:D-Day/sandbox. This image or media was attempted to be removed per criterion number 9 of our non-free content policy. The image or media was replaced with Image:NonFreeImageRemoved.svg , so your formatting of your userpage should be fine. Please find a free image or media to replace it with, and or remove the image from your userspace. User:Gnome (Bot)-talk 05:50, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:90dad3.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:90dad3.jpg. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to insure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any fair use images uploaded after 4 May, 2006, and lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Rettetast 20:53, 18 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Non-free use disputed for Image:01d.jpg

[edit]
Warning sign This file may be deleted.

Thanks for uploading Image:01d.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale you have provided for using this image under "fair use" may be invalid. Please read the instructions at Wikipedia:Non-free content carefully, then go to the image description page and clarify why you think the image qualifies for fair use. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If it is determined that the image does not qualify under fair use, it will be deleted within a couple of days according to our Criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. MER-C 09:09, 1 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:Ny ab cover.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Ny ab cover.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 01:50, 21 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Image source problem with Image:Bhr blk.gif

[edit]
Image Copyright problem
Image Copyright problem

This is an automated message from a robot. You have recently uploaded Image:Bhr blk.gif. The file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, then a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a restatement of that website's terms of use of its content, is usually sufficient information. However, if the copyright holder is different from the website's publisher, their copyright should also be acknowledged.

As well as adding the source, please add a proper copyright licensing tag if the file doesn't have one already. If you created/took the picture, audio, or video then the {{GFDL-self}} tag can be used to release it under the GFDL. If you believe the media meets the criteria at Wikipedia:Non-free content, use a tag such as {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags#Fair use. See Wikipedia:Image copyright tags for the full list of copyright tags that you can use.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. Unsourced and untagged images may be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the image is copyrighted under a non-free license (per Wikipedia:Fair use) then the image will be deleted 48 hours after 17:04, 12 September 2007 (UTC). If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. If you believe you received this message in error, please notify the bot's owner. Hi! I wanted to invite you to discuss the external links section on the Johnny Sauter article at the Talk:Johnny Sauter#External Links. Thanks --Kateshortforbob 14:46, 14 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I would like to discuss with you why you have felt it necessary to remove all of the Official Forum Links I have placed in the service for the NASCAR drivers. Some I added today, others have been in the system for months. Today my links were targeted by you and others to be removed.

You and others have not explained where having official links to official message boards are against Wikipedia rules. Instead, it is an interpretation of what is and what isn't appropriate. I would like to know why you and a few others have interpreted it that way.

Posting official site links has been ok as a wikipedia practice. This is used by Wiki users for a few reasons:

1) Reference material

2) So users know exactly what is officially recognized and what isn't

Having an official forum link does the same, and then more:

1) Reference material

2) So users know exactly what is officially recognized and what isn't

3) So fans know where is a 'safe' place to go and discuss their drivers in a professionally managed and moderated website

My company provides this service to over 120 drivers across the country ... from local level racers to NASCAR drivers. This is no different than them having their official site, except their forums are located off site and managed elsewhere. This is also no different than linking a "team site" (for instance, for Johnny Sauter, linking the Team Yellow Racing) as they are providing that person a service as well.

Maybe the problem is the stigma attached to discussion forums. However, you are making a judgement based on that stigma and personal opinion, not according to the nature of what Wikipedia is about.

The driver's official forum is linked on each one of their sites, so I am not using Wiki to further my business. Instead, I am using it to assist the public as to what is official and what is not. It is no different than placing a link to the driver's official site.

If my links are not allowed, then a high percentage of the links on the Wikipedia service do not belong. Specifically, the links to the reference pages on the racing reference site does not belong because it is promoting a site not associated with the driver for personal gain. Mine is an officially recognized professional service that belongs.

I will await your explaination. While I understand you may feel your perspective is the right one, if you look at the facts presented and strip out all the personal feelings on my side and yours, you will see that it does belong, according to the nature of what Wikipedia is about and for the public.

Thanks.

Words of encouragement

[edit]

I notice that you are finding Wikipedia to be a source of stress. I wanted to say to you that I greatly appreciate all that you have done and continue to do to improve NASCAR on Wikipedia. I haven't followed NASCAR closely for several years now, and you do a great job updating current NASCAR events. I frequently get updated with the NASCAR happenings from Wikipedia. Your discussion comments are always right on target, well thought out, and you have a firm grasp on Wikipedia's policies.

We have all went through darker periods. What has helped me was to focus on improving a single article to WP:GA, like I did for Mario Andretti. Maybe you should do the same. I'd love to work with you on article development if you'd like. Right now I'm working on Alan Kulwicki. I'd appreciate a read through or peer review. You could even help me source/expand it if you'd like to focus on that. If not, I'm open to what the next article should be. Thank you for everything that you do! ⚠

Thanks for uploading Image:ChadLittle.jpg. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

Note that any non-free images not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you.

Replaceable fair use Image:TerriO3159.jpg

[edit]
Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:TerriO3159.jpg. I noticed the 'image' page specifies that the image is being used under fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first fair use criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed image could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this image is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the image description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original Replaceable fair use template.

Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, fair use images which could be replaced by free-licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if not used in an article), per our Fair Use policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Geni 21:08, 11 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Brian Vickers

[edit]

I am the anonymous IP who reverted that edit on Brian Vickers recently. I didn't know that was vandalism because I am new. I thought vandalism was only stuff like "brian vickers is fat" or something like that. I am sorry and I want to know how to join that Project NASCAR. Could you please reply on my talk page? User:Boss Big —Preceding comment was added at 23:13, 14 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Let me begin by saying that if you deface my talk page again I will notify an administrator. If you continue to accuse me of vandalizing that page or any other, I will notify an administrator and if you remove this notice from your talk page I will notify an administrator. If you violate the 3 revert rule on that article I will also notify an administrator.

The references to greatschools.net were removed because they are inadequate as a source. Greatschools serves as a third party clearinghouse for information passed on by the the school districts themselves or other third parties. They do not provide a method for verifying their information and thus cannot be used as a source on Wikipedia under the guidelines of this encyclopedia. I have reverted your edits and replaced the fact tags. If you so choose, you may seek out other sources to replace those tags, but they must be verifiable.

If you disagree with this assessment, you may take it up on the talk page for that article but under no circumstances are you to leave any hostile messages on my talk page in the future. Thank you. Cumulus Clouds 02:12, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • If you revert my changes to this article again I will notify an administrator.

You have asked for evidence supporting my claim about Greatschools.net. To do that, you need only to go to the website and review the material they have available. Their statistics are drawn from government sources which could be (and are, in this article) used as primary sources. There are, in some cases, posts from teachers, parents and students from the schools, but these also cannot be verified. In most cases, they simply provide statistics without citing a source at all. It is impossible, then, to verify the claims of the website and so it cannot be used as a source on this encyclopedia. If you disagree, you can ask for mediation in this case from an administrator. Again, I will contact an administrator if you continue to revert my edits. Thank you. Cumulus Clouds 01:51, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Well, you twice reverted my changes without discussing it and without even considering why I had done it. When you use the vandalism template for an edit that was not vandalism, you insult the editor, violate WP:AGF and undermine the work being done on the original article. This is what I mean when I say "deface."
Let me quote directly from WP:SOURCES so that I can be very clear when I explain to you what a verifiable source is:

In general, the most reliable sources are peer-reviewed journals and books published in university presses; university-level textbooks; magazines, journals, and books published by respected publishing houses; and mainstream newspapers. As a rule of thumb, the greater the degree of scrutiny involved in checking facts, analyzing legal issues, and scrutinizing the evidence and arguments of a particular work, the more reliable it is.

Academic and peer-reviewed publications are highly valued and usually the most reliable sources in areas where they are available, such as history, medicine and science. Material from reliable non-academic sources may also be used in these areas, particularly if they are respected mainstream publications. The appropriateness of any source always depends on the context. Where there is disagreement between sources, their views should be clearly attributed in the text.

Since greatschools.net uses government sources to verify its own claims, it would make sense to replace any references from greatschools.net with the reference to the original primary government sources. For example, Digg cannot be cited as a source because it is a collection of articles from other sources. The articles that Digg links to may instead be cited, thus cutting out any reference to Digg itself.
Instead of constantly reverting my edits to the article, which doesn't serve any real purpose, you can instead spend your time finding the original sources by and through which greatschools.net compiled their data. This way, the fact tags may be replaced with primary, government sources and there will never be a question about verifiability. Cumulus Clouds 21:04, 18 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Well, unfortunately, if you continue to insist on reverting those changes, you're going to keep hearing about this. I've reported your edits to an administrator and I expect some resolution to this matter in the next few days. Until that happens, you are not to remove those fact tags from that article. Cumulus Clouds 00:10, 19 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:360otc 125.gif

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:360otc 125.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Disputed fair use rationale for Image:Cup car 14.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:Cup car 14.jpg.

Thank you.BetacommandBot 20:38, 29 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

reverting edits

[edit]

D-Day, I read the deal in regards to edit reversion, and if anything, that protects me and not you. I made an edit to clean up a page in order to make it more professional with forum-style nonsense taken out of it, let alone some of which being lies, and you keep reverting it. According to the rule that you sent me, you are the one that needs to stop. Any time somebody edits information with corrections on this website, it seems like someone is always there to revert it, with or without warrant.

-Thanks for some decent information. I was unaware of the {fact} tag as I don't edit much.

I like the fact that you updated the Hendrick Motorsports stats for the upcoming 2008 season. You did leave out Dale Earnhardt Jr's 3rd sponsor in National Guard. You also forgot to take out the Casey Mears #25 car. You did do a good job though. --67.87.67.175 (talk) 00:54, 27 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Speedy deletion of Billy Trudel

[edit]

A tag has been placed on Billy Trudel requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person or group of people, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is notable: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, articles that do not assert the subject's importance or significance may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable, as well as our subject-specific notability guideline for biographies.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the article (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the article's talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the article meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the article that would would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. blatant WikiProject spamming

[edit]

Just a short message to let you know that there's now a subWikiProject for the Green Bay Packers: Wikipedia:WikiProject National Football League/Green Bay Packers subproject. I didn't join, but I thought that you may be interested. Did you noticed that I've been up to a lot lately? I hope that you are doing good. Royalbroil 02:18, 11 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I nominated Chase Austin for DYK. I undeleted it from the dead and updated it. Please expand it if you can. Royalbroil 20:53, 12 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
