WikiStalking

My post at FemaleMMAFan's talk page

Ok, I decided to respond to your wiki-stalking on FemaleMMAFan's page, but that isn't the place for it. I'm going to keep this relatively short. It wasn't your place to snipe or pass judgement. You weren't involved and you're not an admin. Whether I will be an admin or not in the future is nothing to do with you and your unprofessional comments aren't appreciated. The argument between me and you was about your needless additions of images, which you were warned about by a third party. Please remove my user talk page from your watchlist as I do not wish to hear from you/have you evaluate me under pointless circumstances such as this, once this discussion is ended. It's clear you have a problem with me, so it's best if you remove my page so the problem is over. Paralympiakos (talk) 19:27, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Dude your on my watch list how can that be "Wikistalking" ? that editor was obviously upset at your actions, I mearly stoped by to let "no body has "Power" or "seniority" a discussion you conveniently deleted [2]. Mlpearc powwow 20:00, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Having another user on your watchlist is sometimes referred to as that on this site. I don't see why you feel the need to have my page on your watchlist. I have no association with you other than your chipping in. I'm well aware that no one has power. The same statement should be targetted towards FemaleMMAFan who was doing the exact same edits as me (e.g. just undoing). I deleted the discussion because it is over and I don't want comments filled nonsense whereby people tell me about flags when the issue is a guideline, not a rule.

Let me ask you this, why do you feel the need to comment on whether or not I'll eventually be an admin? Why do you think that just because I don't agree with your opinion, that that therefore means I've no chance? My aim here isn't to argue, it's to establish why you're watching my page, why you comment when the discussion was over and why you hold your particular opinion of me. Paralympiakos (talk) 20:09, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Dude You deleted it 9mins before posting your comment here, Please. And yes I will comment on anybody becoming an Admin, if you don't like or can't handle scrutiny then don't advertise the fact. Mlpearc powwow 20:26, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Ok, next question then (and still keep in mind I'm trying to be civil here, not argue), why are you threatening action at ANI? I've done nothing wrong. I'm trying to talk to you like an adult.

Additionally, what on earth is this list? This

What is this unprofessional conversation? Why am I an ass? This

For the record, my browser has a habit of popping down while I'm clicking on something. Sometimes this means that I accidentally click rollback on my watchlist. Please explain these links. Paralympiakos (talk) 20:31, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

It's simple, It's my user space. Mlpearc powwow 20:34, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Explain it now or this is going to be taken further. Paralympiakos (talk) 20:35, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Your threat's don't work here, you asked for an explanation and I gave it. Mlpearc powwow 20:38, 19 July 2010 (UTC)
Just dropping by to let you know this matter was brought up on WP:ANI. -- Salvio ( Let's talk 'bout it!) 22:17, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Yes, I saw it. I was waiting for the reporting party to notify as required, but all's good. Thank you. Mlpearc powwow 22:26, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

Moved it to RFC as you'll know by now since you'll be watching my contribs list. This whole process was so unneeded. If you'd just explained your list, we'd be getting on with our lives now. Paralympiakos (talk) 22:46, 19 July 2010 (UTC)

RfC suggested resolution

Paralympiakos has responded to a proposed resolution on the RfC talk page. Please review it and seek to resolve the issue. Wikipedia_talk:Requests_for_comment/Mlpearc. Thanks. Netalarmtalk 13:06, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

I have no issues. I made my comments to a user that I felt was attacked. My issues were over then. I am not the one who has drawn it out to this point, to me the matter was never opened to Paralympiakos. I have only replied and made a few comments along his road to this point. Again the matter was closed.Mlpearc powwow 14:02, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Once you talk about me in such a way, the matter becomes instantly open to me. I still see no apology either. The RfC will stay open until that point as yes, you ARE the one drawing it out to this point. If you hold your hands up and admit you were wrong, then this matter goes away. Paralympiakos (talk) 14:46, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

OMG An apology ? I guess this will remain open till Hell freezes over. Mlpearc powwow 14:50, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Ridiculous. How can you deny you're in the wrong? You've also just said you aren't trying to keep this going. What do you call this? You had the chance to end it, but you continue to drag this on and on. What exactly makes you think you're in the right here? Paralympiakos (talk) 14:55, 20 July 2010 (UTC)

Sorry for the delay in replying. I would generally echo xeno's advice, that it would be wise to ignore paralympiakos. If he continues to bother you, I would take it to WP:WQA or WP:ANI. Hopefully this will be resolved soon. Regards, RadManCF open frequency 23:43, 21 July 2010 (UTC)

GOCE July 2010 backlog elimination drive chart

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive! We have now passed the halfway point, so here's an update.

Progress Report - Progress toward the targets has been good. 751 articles out of the approximately 1,600 we would like to get completed by the end of the month were done by July 15, so we will be very close to meeting the target for volume. However, we would like to clear all of the 2008 articles from the backlog, and there are still 892 left to do. Please consider choosing one of these older articles when looking for something to copy edit. If we focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue.

Participation Report - 95 people signed up for the July drive. This is a great result compared to May, when we had 36. However, in May only one person that signed up didn't do any copy edits, and in July only 59 of the 95 have posted any copy edits on the big board.

The task may seem insurmountable but please remember that if all 95 participants copy edit just one article a day from now until the end of the month, we will eliminate 1,300 more articles from the backlog. So please consider participating at whatever level you can! All contributions are appreciated.

This newsletter was prepared for the GOCE by Diannaa (Talk), S Masters (talk), and The Raptor Let's talk.

Cedar lake /PROD tag removed

Removed delete tag per, This is a place, I've been there, it exists but I can not find the guideline to reference it to :P. Mlpearc powwow 16:35, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

Existence doesn't prove notability/encyclopedic value. tedder (talk) 17:01, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
Will you hold off on deletion for awhile so I can see what I can get for this ? Mlpearc powwow 17:10, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
I think this makes the place Notabile and Encyclopedic: The lake and the surrounding areas were used for many episodes of Bonanza [3] and a variety of movies, including The Parent Trap, Kissin' Cousins, and Brigham Young. I hope you agree and remove the deletion tag. Mlpearc powwow 17:44, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

The result was keep. Keep, withdrawn. IAR on a self-close, as consensus is clear and it's mostly uncontroversial to do so. tedder (talk) 20:42, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Cedar Lake (California)

Cedar Lake (California) (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views) – (View log • AfD statistics)
(Find sources: Google (books · news · scholar · free images · WP refs· FENS · JSTOR · TWL)

Prod removed. The issue isn't that the lake/pond exists, it's that a church camp is lacking reliable sources to establish notability. There's lore that movies were filmed there, but nothing to back it up. tedder (talk) 16:42, 27 July 2010 (UTC)

*Delete because it is an non-notable church camp. Prsaucer1958 (talk) 19:16, 27 July 2010 (UTC) Change vote to Keep. Prsaucer1958 (talk) 20:36, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

  • Keep. I've expanded the article so that it is now clearly about the lake, not the church camp. Please give this another look! Because of its location and beauty, the lake has appeared in many motion pictures and TV episodes, which has led to its mention in numerous reliable sources that are independent of the subject, some of which are now cited as sources. I also believe that named geographical features are inherently notable. --Stepheng3 (talk) 19:44, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
It's looking good, Stepheng3, and certainly emphasizing the lake instead of the camp helps its encyclopedic merit in my mind. OTOH, it still lacks reliable sources, since IMDB is a little difficult as a reliable source: WP:RS/IMDB. In other words, it's great as supplementary material (as is the church camp website), but doesn't hold much weight otherwise. tedder (talk) 21:26, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
But surely the USGS and California Department of Water Resources are reliable sources. Are you saying that those cites are not significant? --Stepheng3 (talk) 21:37, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
I don't know offhand if GNIS counts as a RS to establish notability, that's something that would need to be addressed in a larger forum. In any case, it's a moot point, the article has been massively cleaned up and refocused. tedder (talk) 20:24, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
Sorry about using IMDB as a source. I managed to confirm the lake's use as a location in Brigham Young (1940) (using an Italian book at Google Books) and also to find a news story about a recent drowning in the lake. The lake is notable, and the article now cites six independent sources. I've done a ton of work here, and I'm explicitly asking Tedder and Prsaucer to reconsider their positions on this AfD. --Stepheng3 (talk) 22:51, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
IMDB is probably fine as a source, just not as a source to establish notability. Consider my position reconsidered. May as well let this go full-length, it's clear that it will be kept (as it should). It's nice being wrong sometimes. tedder (talk) 20:24, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
  • Strong Keep and a suggestion to nom that the Afd be withdrawn based on Wikipedia:Notability (geography) and Common outcomes-Geography. This lake is notable because it is in the USGS name database, plus its not a bad article too boot!--Mike Cline (talk) 21:26, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
  • Keep based on the focus being on the lake itself. The common outcome (though not an official policy) is described in Wikipedia:Notability (geography) under "named geographic features", with the gist of it being that if it's named and if there is some showing of notability, it can have its own article; otherwise, it would be redirected. Mandsford 21:28, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
  • Keep per refocus on the lake itself (geographical article). And there's actually content not just a "geo-feature X is located at Y" microstub--rare for small geographical features--with actual history and some sort of notability. DMacks (talk) 21:43, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
  • Keep per DMacks and Mandsford. Great job, Stephen. Killiondude (talk) 23:13, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
  • Strong Keep - per WP:GNG and Stepheng3's edits. Very nicely done. ----moreno oso (talk) 18:50, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Cedar Lake /Barnstar for saving Cedar Lake (California)

The Article Rescue Barnstar
Given this 28th day of July in the year of 2010 to Stepheng3 for saving Cedar Lake (California). Congratulations, the nominator has asked to withdrew its AfD. --moreno oso (talk) 20:34, 28 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks. California landforms happen to be one of my areas of special interest, so this AfD offered a challenge that was right up my alley. --Stepheng3 (talk) 22:10, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

5x expansion of Cedar Lake (California)

Don't know if you're following the thread you started on my talkpage but an admin pointed out that you're well on the way to 5x expanding this article. Here is the gist from my talkpage:

  • Okay Bubba, rub it in (you're right as usual). In fact, there are at least two other Cedar Lakes I know in California. The 5x would require about 4700b or about double its present size (it was about 923b when it was nominated for the AfD). The expansion began yesterday on the 27th which means Stepheng3 or any other editor that wishes to assist him has four more days to 5x it.

I know either BubbaHotep or I would gladly nominate the article for you should you decide to expand it further. 4700b translates roughly to 610 words with citations non-inclusive. DYK or Did You Know items appear on the frontpage and are distinctive editting marks/awards for editors. You can look at my userpage to see that I've done a few and later on down the page, you can see my 25th nom that appeared with its picture. I encourage to think this over but you have four days to get it done. Good luck. ----moreno oso (talk) 21:11, 28 July 2010 (UTC)

Cedar Lake (California)

I want to thank you very much. Stepheng3. What a wonderful job. I feel so bad, after yelling "HELP". This was my last edit to Cedar Lake[4]. Four hrs. after that edit I was in the hospital getting prepared for an emergency appendectomy. I was just released from the hospital 3hrs. ago. All went well and I am fine. But I still have praise for you and everyone that participated in the AfD. My wife set up my laptop when I got settled in and my browser opens to the last page it was on when shut down. It was Cedar Lake. After I signed in I had a message waiting for me at my talk page, so I went there first, when I came back to cedar lake the first thing I noticed it wasn't flagged for deletion :). I will be writing you and everyone tomorrow, but I wanted you to know why I yelled for help and was never herd from. till later, and again Thank You Very Much. Mlpearc powwow 01:27, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Cedar Lake

I added the link to the photo of Cedar Lake instead of uploading it to the article because, well, nearly every time I've tried to upload a photo at Commons, some bot or an administrator tells me there's something wrong with it. All rights are reserved on the image, according to its source, [5], so it is not allowed on Wikipedia under that license. However, I could give a try at contacting the author to see if he/she would agree to release it under a free license, so it would be allowed on the article page, given the criteria at WP:COPYREQ. Would you like me to do that? Jsayre64 (talk) 20:22, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

And yeah, you're right, my talk page is a total mess. I'm considering archiving some of it. Jsayre64 (talk) 20:24, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

  • I've contacted the creators/staff of Flickr to see if I can ask for the rights of the photo without becoming a member. Flickr will email me with a response hopefully soon and I hope the answer is yes. If not, you or I have to become a Flickr member. Then, Flickr says, there is a way to send a message to the author of the photo to tell or ask them anything you want.
  • Glad the Cedar Lake article was saved. I actually have nothing to do with the lake. I was just clicking the "Random article" link here on Wikipedia and reading/improving several stub articles and this article was one of them that came up. Jsayre64 (talk) 21:35, 30 July 2010 (UTC)
  • This is what I just heard from Flickr in my email: "I have escalated your email to a senior representative in an effort to obtain the best answer. Please allow up to 7 days for us to respond to your question, as we are experiencing a higher than expected volume of requests." Jsayre64 (talk) 00:18, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah I also sent an email to the Cedar Lake website and asked if they would have any images, mainly of the lake, they could or would release for the article. Actually I sent the same message to two address at the site, I received a reply and a different addy to contact, so I'm waiting for that reply. One of us might get a "Nibble" LOL. Mlpearc powwow 03:51, 1 August 2010 (UTC)
  • While you're waiting for that answer, you may be interested in Flickr's final and unlucky response to my email: "Unfortunately we cannot contact the member on your behalf. You would have to create a Flickr account and contact our member directly." Jsayre64 (talk) 03:12, 3 August 2010 (UTC)
Well I received an email today from the Lakes web site stating they have some pictures that they will send us and that they will fill out the license so they could be used. Waiting for a reply now so we'll see what happens.:-) Mlpearc powwow 03:58, 3 August 2010 (UTC)

GOCE /Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody!

Stats
If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the May 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, your word totals are cumulative for barnstars (not the leaderboard). Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars.

Please hold off on removing red links, they have a purpose. Please read here Wikipedia:Red link#Dealing with existing red links, please read the whole page. I know what Redlinks are for and they are good tools, however when they are on a page like Nazareth's, which have been on this page for over three years and no one has made a new page from them then it is about time to remove them. yeah except I am more often doing other tasks I just don't have time to double check every edit that has no, little or vague edit summaries that if used would not need double the work. and what about the edit note you deleted was it also nonexistent ? Mlpearc powwow 02:07, 6 August 2010 (UTC)

Dear MIpearc,

I have just read your message to me at My Talk..you have stated that the info about the on camera hosts for The CBS TV Network airings of The Wizard Of Oz Might be true? But..you have said you needed more reference materials..that this information is factual. The information is true..I have acquired it from Messers:Fricke,Scarefone and Stillman's book. There are even photos inside of that book that show Mr.Red Skelton and his daughter and Mr.Danny Kaye doing their pre-taped hosting segments for the movie. I also have an audio aircheck of the very first broadcast of The Wizard Of Oz featuring a segment with Ms.Minnelli and Mr.Lahr. The audio aircheck comes from my friend Mr.Phil Gries private collection of audio airchecks from old tv shows of the past. If you still doubt that my information is not accurate? Please look up the information in "The Wizard Of Oz 50th Anniversary Pictorial Book"..Chapter 17"Guests Hosts On CBS" pages 215,216,217 and 218 and Chapter 18 "NBC Interlude/CBS Combake" page 223 to verify my information. (Mr.Nost (talk) 19:27, 26 July 2010 (UTC))7/26/10

Great, do you have the ISBN # of the book ? Mlpearc powwow 20:17, 26 July 2010 (UTC)
Yes! I have the ISBN number for The Wizard oz 50th Anniversary Pictorial book

It's ISBN 0446514462 I hope that this helps in verifying my info regarding the on camera guests hosts of the film.During the years that The Wizard Of Oz was seen on The CBS TV Network. (Mr.Nost (talk) 11:07, 27 July 2010 (UTC))7/27/10

OK, now you can reference your edit at [6]. Just add your edit back, you can find more here Wikipedia:Citing sources. Now you can use the book's ISBN as a reference. If need anything further please do not hesitate to contact me. P.S. You don't have to address each talk page response as you do a letter, in the edit window all the text you type should pull off the left side of the window. [7]Open the edit window at each of these versions and you can see what is happening, hope this helps [8].. Cheers. Mlpearc powwow 14:26, 27 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for verifying my source for the extra info concerning the on camera guests hosts of The CBS TV Network broadcasts of MGM's"The Wizard Of Oz". I know that I have to add my edit..but..I don't know exactly how to do this procedure? Could You please tell me what procedure that I must use to do this? Thank You For Your Time And Considerations,(Mr.Nost (talk) 20:46, 27 July 2010 (UTC))7/27/10

The easiest way from here, your information you put in the article is still there, but it has been tagged [citation needed] showing editors that the statement before the tag needs to be referenced. If you click on the ISBN 0446514462 of the book it will bring up a special page, follow the instructions and you will eventually reach a page about the book, you will need that page URL. Now you need to replace the {{cn}} with your reference, the format for the ref can go like this (there are more advanced versions, but this will do). " <ref>['''replace this with the page URL'''(space)'''Replace this with title of the book''']</ref> " . So you would end up with this <ref>[http://books.google.com/books?as_isbn=0446514462 The Wizard of Oz: the official 50th anniversary pictorial history]</ref> . This will replace the {{cn}} template. Try this a see how you do, if you need anything you have my number, LOL.

Cedar Lake /Possible image(s) for Cedar Lake article

  • Do you have the images from the Cedar Lake website yet that we could use in the article? Sorry if I'm bothering you... just curious and interested in improving the page. Jsayre64 (talk) 04:08, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
No, no bother at all, I thought about that today. I have not heard anything, but I will send a query. I just archived our previous discussion today. I'll give you a shout when I hear something. Mlpearc powwow 04:34, 12 August 2010 (UTC)
I just sent a reminder email to Cedar Lake and I will let you know as soon as I get a response. Cheers Mlpearc powwow 01:38, 13 August 2010 (UTC)

Endofskull

Endofskull original post (Commentary)

I was wondering if you would comment on my request to join the Edit filter manager group. Hope you would, and feel free to ask any questions! Endofskull (talk) 02:13, 20 August 2010 (UTC)

Conflict Start

Can you please explain this warning? That seems very uncalled for. Endofskull left you a talkback, but then thought better of it as you had already asked him not to contact you and reverted himself. This seems a bad use for a warning, and would like an explanation to this. All you are doing is biting a relative newcomer.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 18:52, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

There's nothing to explain [9], and there was no TB to Undo. Mlpearc powwow 18:57, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
Yes there is and yes there was. The template was malformed, an example to Skull's relative inexperience. If you would stop slapping him with templates and provide some actual human written advice to help him improve we wouldn't have any problems. He needs guidance, not somebody telling him that asking for advice will be considered vandalism. That doesn't help anybody.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 19:03, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
I just wanna say, if you look at the history, you'll see "(Talkback" and then the link. Then I removed it, as you can see "(Undid my TB.)" Endofskull (talk) 19:17, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
This is the last TB Endofskull left on my talk page which was placed before This message and before This message which was deleted by me [10]. The edit you speak of Here was posted after both of my messages to Not post on my talk page. If Endofskull would heed messages given to him/her, as this discussion Here shows that he/she does not, then there should of not have been a new TB to Undo. Once again, My Involvement, My Suggestions, and Interest in this matter and editor is Closed, Done and Terminated. Good day to you both. Mlpearc powwow 19:49, 21 August 2010 (UTC)
The last talkback posted to your page is this talkback alerting you to a message to you here. Saying that this edit is not a talkback is stupid as hell, you can fully see the {{Talkback}} template right there alerting you to a note. Just because you feel he has no right to edit this page doesn't mean the edit wasn't to add a talkback. Endofskull did heed your warning, as he realized his mistake and reverted himself as to not cause trouble. New editors make mistakes. They need to or they won't get better. Get over it. There was no reason for the warning as Endofskull cleaned up after himself when he saw his mistake. If you aren't going to help this new editor, I would ask you leave him alone as you are doing more harm than good.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 20:08, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Gordonrox24 Posts

Well isn't that mature of you. Lets ignore our problems and just send them to an archive. I guess we can just archive the stupid warning to then.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 20:18, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Disagreements are not vandalism. Everard Proudfoot (talk) 20:24, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

My statements Here and Here are not Disagreements they are stamements of my request not to be asked for further assistance from Endofskull, which he/she did not respect and that is Vandalism. Mlpearc powwow 20:40, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

P.S. And I will extend this message to Anyone who thinks of furthering this topic on my talk page ! Mlpearc powwow 20:40, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

Not respecting a request is not vandalism, it is not respecting a request! It is what it is! Fine, slap me a warning. Don't be surprised if further action is taken on my part if you do. People here are only trying to discuss an issue, and you are being hostile.--Gordonrox24 | Talk 20:57, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

JamesBWatson /User:Mlpearc/Work

You posted on my talk page, saying "Hey, JamesBWatson just wondering what is happening Here This page was created with the letter "A" then deleted right afterwords?". What happens was as follows. The tool at http://toolserver.org/~russell/cgi-bin/csd.py was showing User:Mlpearc/Work as being tagged for speedy deletion. In fact the page did not exist, nor was there any log record that it had ever existed. At the time I had no idea what was going on, but I wondered if there was any chance that creating the page without a speedy deletion tag and then deleting it might persuade the tool that it wasn't tagged. It didn't work, and since then I have been informed that the page tagged for deletion was in fact Wikipedia talk:User:Mlpearc/Work. Presumably the tool can't cope with two colons in a page title. That page has now been deleted by another admin. I suppose I should have told you what I was doing, since I was creating and deleting a page in your user space. The Guild of Copy-Editors – September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive

The Wikipedia Guild of Copy-Editors invite you to participate in the September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive will begin on 1 September at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on 30 September at 23:59 (UTC). The goals for this drive are to eliminate 2008 from the queue and to reduce the backlog to fewer than 5,000 articles.

Sign-up has already begun at the September drive page, and will be open throughout the drive. If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a message on the drive's talk page.

Before you begin copy-editing, please carefully read the instructions on the main drive page. Please make sure that you know how to copy-edit, and be familiar with the Wikipedia Manual of Style.

Awards and barnstars
A range of barnstars will be awarded to active participants. Some are exclusive to GoCE drives. More information on awards can be found on the main drive page.

Thank you; we look forward to meeting you on the drive!

GOCE /Thanks from the GOCE

Thank you very much for signing up for the Guild of Copy Editors' September Backlog Elimination Drive! The copyedit backlog stretches back two years, to the summer of 2008! We're going to need all the help we can muster to reduce the backlog to a manageable size. We've set a goal of clearing all of 2008 from the backlog, and getting the total under 5000. To do that, we're going to need more participants. Please invite anyone you can to join the drive! Once again, thanks for your support! Hersfold /Re: IPBE (from May)

Hey Mlpearc,

Sorry for the super long delay in responding; I haven't been on Wikipedia in the past few months. I did get your request for the IPBE flag, and wanted to let you know that we don't generally grant the flag pre-emptively. It's intended for users who are actively caught in a hard rangeblock that they aren't able to get around. Since your request is based on the grounds that you may encounter interference, but should still be able to find alternative access, I'm not willing to grant you the IPBE flag. If the situation has changed, and do still believe you need it, I can take a look into things once I get checkuser back. Thanks for your patience, and let me know if you have any questions. Wikify /October drive

Sorry, guys. The wikification drive has been bumped to October. You might have noticed already, however. I'm amazed how many people came on as soon as I sent out the invite. With a few more, we can easily meet our goal. Just remember. Concentrate your firepower on the 2008 articles, and you should have no problems. Great work! Also, if you have time, please also invite other users to participate. Thanks!

GOCE newsletter

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

GOCE September 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

Participation report — We have 71 participants in the September drive. 95 people signed up for the July drive, and in May we had 36.

Progress report — We have been making solid progress in eliminating the 2008 articles from the backlog so far. If we continue to focus our firepower we can completely wipe out 2008 from the queue. Overall volumes are lower than expected though, with nearly a thousand articles yet to be done if we are to meet our overall target. If you have not yet participated in the drive, we recommend you do so. If each person who signed up edits one article per day from now till the end of the month we can eliminate another 1,065 articles from the backlog. All contributions are appreciated.

Announcement: credit for 10k+ articles — Participants editing a 10k word article may claim credit for two 5k+ articles on the leaderboard. Those that edit a 15k word article may claim credit for three. Regardless, the article is still counted as a single article in the tallies.

Reminder — Articles from the Requests page can be included in your tally, even if they do not have a copy edit tag. This is a great place to go if you are interested in finding a higher quality article to work on.

Fridae'sDoom editnotices /Hiya

Hi Mlpearc, I was wondering... why are my user and user talk editnotices invalid? They are User:Fridae'sDoom/Editnotice and User talk:Fridae'sDoom/Editnotice, for some reason it just says it's invalid when I edit it, TFOWR, when I asked him, said it could have something to do with the apostrophe in my name, but he and I are both unsure and I would like to ask for your opinion on the matter since you are far more experienced than I. —Ғяіᴆaз'§ĐøøмChampagne? 12:12, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

Hey, Fridae'sDoom, The first thing is you edit notices are in user space here [11], they need to be in "Template" space like mine here. You should be able to just move your notices to that space or you might need to start the template pages and transfer the markup to there. If you need any other help if this doesn't work let me know. Mlpearc powwow 15:37, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
Oh ok, thanks :) I'll try doing that. —Ғяіᴆaз'§ĐøøмChampagne? 23:19, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
Unfortunately it seems I need to be an account creator, I do not have this user right at the moment since I'm still requesting access to the ACC Tool and don't meet the requirements for Acct Creator. Could you possibly do it? It's be much appreciated. Regards, —Ғяіᴆaз'§ĐøøмChampagne? 23:22, 18 September 2010 (UTC)
I don't mean to be a pain but you moved my talk edit notice to the template talk section instead of Template:Editnotices/Group/User_talk:Fridae'sDoom. Sorry to be a bother. —Ғяіᴆaз'§ĐøøмChampagne? 23:51, 18 September 2010 (UTC)

GOCE scripts /Common terms unlinking script

You mentioned a while back to Tony that you would be interested in trying out a script which removes links to common terms. The current version is here. Obviously, what constitutes a common term can be subjective, and any link's usefulness will also depend on its context, thus this script should be used with care. This script will unlink many of the top 100 most linked articles in WP, and many common-garden words which most people should know the meaning of. Of course, all edits are your own responsibility. Any feedback would be appreciated. --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 01:53, 15 September 2010 (UTC)

What a welcome surprise, I had to read your post about three times until I remembered. Yes, thank you. I will take it out for a run, with great care of course and will gladly inform you of my thoughts and such if you'd like, again thanx for the test drive :P. Mlpearc powwow 02:14, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
Here's the second present you wanted from Santa – a script which delinks all dates and date fragments, and converts them all to the same format. I'll work on the doc, but essentially, there are four modes:
  1. all dates to dmy
  2. all dates to mdy
  3. body dates to dmy (ie ISO-style dates within ref tags are not converted)
  4. body dates to mdy
Note that no ISO-style dates not within ref tags are not converted. --Ohconfucius ¡digame! 04:10, 15 September 2010 (UTC)
  • Glad to see that you're putting the scripts to use! Just saw your edit at Emerson Lake and Palmer. Please note that the date format for articles about British subjects follow the international date format (dd mmm yyyy), in accordance with WP:TIES. Cheers,
Thank you, I did not know that. This is a good thing to mention in the Doc's of the script. Mlpearc powwow 14:20, 22 September 2010 (UTC)

Hello Mlpearc, I nominated myself a while ago to join the team and was declined. This was because of my being new (less than 3 months I believe). I was wondering, yes I can read the sign that says six months, if I have enough experience to join the team. It seems like something that I would be extremely interested in. I understand that you don't want new users who don't understand anything about the project, but I feel that 6 months is a bit long. Most projects and such have 4 at most including WP:ACC which is at least as important. I feel that I could be a good asset to the Abuse Response team. I am capable of understanding WHOIS reports and dealing with confused people. I enjoy helping out in back areas of Wikipedia and feel that preventing vandalism is very important. I'm aware that I left a very similar at Pilif12p's talk page. This isn't forum shopping. It's just my trying to get what I need faster. Thank you, Mr. R00t Talk 00:46, 3 October 2010 (UTC)

GOCE /September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive Conclusion

GOCE September 2010 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors September 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated! Several of our top editors were called away to real life concerns during the month (be careful out there, people!). This meant that once again, we did not meet all our lofty targets, but we did come close.

Stats

  • Out of 76 registered editors, 45 actively participated.
  • We nearly wiped out the 2008 articles from the backlog—there were only 13 remaining when the drive closed.
  • We reduced the backlog by 725 articles (11.5%), so it was another successful drive.
  • A total of 59 barnstars will be awarded to 40 editors—well done, and congratulations to all.

Barnstars
If you copy edited at least 4,000 words, you qualify for a barnstar. If you edited in the July 2010 GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive, you may have earned rollover words, which counted towards this month's barnstars (except for the leaderboard awards). Any unused word credits will be held over for the next drive, as long as you participated in the September drive. Over the course of the next week or two, we will be handing out the barnstars. Click here to see a list of barnstar winners.

  • We will be holding our next drive in November. You can sign up here.

A huge "thank you" to all editors who helped clear the backlog and to others who helped out behind-the-scenes. See you at the next drive, and until then, please continue to help us work through the backlog. Happy editing!

It tries to recommend only articles that other Wikipedians have marked as needing work. Your contributions make Wikipedia better -- thanks for helping.

If you have feedback on how to make SuggestBot better, please tell me on SuggestBot's talk page. Thanks from Nettrom (talk), SuggestBot's caretaker.

P.S. You received these suggestions because your name was listed on the SuggestBot request page. If this was in error, sorry about the confusion. -- SuggestBot (talk) 17:19, 8 October 2010 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Saruman_The_Lord_of_the_Rings.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:Saruman_The_Lord_of_the_Rings.jpg. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Melesse (talk) 03:16, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Non-free files in your user space

Hey there Mlpearc, thank you for your contributions. I am a bot, alerting you that non-free files are not allowed in user or talk space. I removed some files I found on User:Mlpearc/My Uploads. In the future, please refrain from adding fair-use files to your user-space drafts or your talk page.

  • See a log of files removed today here.

Thank you, -- DASHBot (talk) 05:03, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Happy 10/10/10

Double Ten Day is, really, unrelated—but we don't appear to have a cool pic for this one

I suppose I should've timed this message at 10:10:10 too, but frankly, I can't be arsed. You know how it is.

Did you know... that tenten in Japaense writing are a little wiggly thing, a bit like a quotation-mark, which makes e.g. "ka" (か) into "ga" (が) or "fu" (ふ) into "bu" (ぶ) ?

So, take time out to have a bit of a giggle.

All the best, and 10-10 'till we do it again.  Chzz  ►  08:49, 10 October 2010 (UTC)

Overlinking and infoboxes

Why? --John (talk) 15:03, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

Hello John, When using AWB or a script like I use for Over-linking in an article please be careful NOT to include the infobox in the de-linking Here. Inobox's are expected to be Heavily linked and trimming them down with the rest of the prose is something that shouldn't be done. Usually what I do is copy the infobox to my clipboard and then run AWB or a script to de-link the page then replace the infobox without it being touched. Yes there is a lot of articles that need this type of attention. Cheers. Mlpearc powwow 15:05, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

Sorry my error, the infobox wasn't involved in your edit, Sorry my bad :P. Mlpearc powwow 16:02, 15 October 2010 (UTC)
No problem, I did wonder what you were talking about. --John (talk) 16:04, 15 October 2010 (UTC)

Your input is requested

I have started an RfC on inappropriate userboxes, i.e. those that don't follow the introductory paragraph at WP:UBX:

"A userbox (commonly abbreviated as UBX) is a small colored box ... designed to appear only on a Wikipedian's user page as a communicative notice about the user, in order to directly (or even indirectly) help Wikipedians collaborate more effectively on articles."

How does a userbox about a user's own preferences in regards to what topics on Wikipedia they hate and what type of sexually explicit material they like and actively view help Wikipedians collaborate with one another? Which is the question I am raising.

This introductory paragraph over at WP:UBX contradicts WP:NOTCENSORED so I'd like you to weigh in at WT:UBX, it'll only take 5 minutes of your time. I've sent this message because the topic has not had much community input

Date formatting

I notice you've been modifying dates in articles I watchlist, namely Star Trek: The Motion Picture and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan. WP:MOSNUM says that body format dates must be uniform and reference formats must be uniform, but not that they have to be the same... considering that ISO format was preferred during the delinking discussions and the MoS says to stay with established style, I'd appreciate it if you'd stop running that script. Thanks, Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 22:42, 22 October 2010 (UTC)

This is the script I've been using User:Ohconfucius/MOSNUM dates. I'm sure it complies with all policies. I can run it and just change the body of the article and the ISO will not be changed. I can change both articles I've done to that format if you'd like. Mlpearc Public (talk) 00:05, 23 October 2010 (UTC)
If you'd run it that way, I'd appreciate it. MDY and ISO within refs are how the articles I've been involved in are almost always formatted. Der Wohltemperierte Fuchs(talk) 00:54, 23 October 2010 (UTC)

GOCE /November copy edit drive

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors Backlog Elimination Drive!

The Wikipedia Guild of Copy-Editors invites you to participate in the November 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive, a month-long effort to reduce the backlog of articles that require copy-editing. The drive will begin on 1 November at 00:00 (UTC) and will end on 30 November at 23:59 (UTC). The goal for this drive is to reduce the backlog by 10% (approximately 500 articles). We hope to focus our efforts on the oldest three months (January, February, and March 2009) and the newest three months (September, October, and November 2010) of articles in the queue.

Sign-up has already begun at the November drive page, and will be open throughout the drive. If you have any questions or concerns, please leave a message on the drive's talk page.

Before you begin copy-editing, please carefully read the instructions on the main drive page. Please make sure that you know how to copy-edit, and be familiar with the Wikipedia Manual of Style.

Awards and barnstars

A range of barnstars will be awarded to active participants, some of which are exclusive to GOCE drives. More information on awards can be found on the main drive page.

Thank you; we look forward to meeting you on the drive!

Your AIV report

Hello Mlpearc. I saw your post at AIV where you had to report an anon IP a 2nd time. I thought that was odd so I dug into the edit history for the AIV page and found this [12]. It looks like the bot erased your initial report when it was removing another entry. I have never seen that happen before. It might just be a one off event but I will keep my eyes open because if it happens again it should probably be brought to the attention of admins. I hope that this is helpful but if it wasn't I apologize for taking up your time. Cheers and happy editing. MarnetteD | Talk 20:54, 27 October 2010 (UTC)

Thank you very much ! I also looked at that and just kida thought it got lost in the edit conflicts I was having (which was probably the bot) :). posting a message on my talk page is never "taking up your time". Thank you for confirming my "Guesses". Cheers. Mlpearc powwow 21:13, 27 October 2010 (UTC)
