Hello fellow Wikipedia administrators open to recall category member! |
---|
I am leaving you this message because recent events have given me concern. When Aaron Brenneman and I, and others, first developed this category well over a year ago, we visualized it as a simple idea. A low hassle, low bureaucracy process. We also visualized it as a process that people would come to trust, in fact as a way of increasing trust in those admins who chose to subscribe to the notion of recall. The very informal approach to who is qualified to recall, what happens during it, and the process in general were all part of that approach. But recent events have suggested that this low structure approach may not be entirely effective. More than one of the recent recalls we have seen have been marred by controversy around what was going to happen, and when. Worse, they were marred by some folk having the perception, rightly or wrongly, that the admin being recalled was trying to change the rules, avoid the process, or in other ways somehow go back on their word. This is bad. It's bad for you the admin, bad for the trust in the process, and bad for the community as a whole. I think a way to address this issue is to increase the predictability of the process in advance. I have tried to do that for myself. In my User:Lar/Accountability page, I have given pretty concrete definitions of the criteria for recall, and of the choices I can make, and of the process for the petition, and of the process for other choices I might make (the modified RfC or the RfAr). I think it would be very helpful if other admins who have voluntarily made themselves subject to recall went to similar detail. It is not necessary to adopt the exact same conditions, steps, criteria, etc. It's just helpful to have SOME. Those are mine, fashion yours as you see fit, I would not be so presumptuous as to say mine are right for you. In fact I urge you not to just adopt mine, as I do change them from time to time without notice, but instead develop your own. You are very welcome to start with mine if you so wish, though. But do something. If you have not already, I urge you to make your process more concrete, now, while there is no pressure and you can think clearly about what you want. Do it now rather than later, during a recall when folk may not react well to perceived changes in process or commitment. Further, I suggest that after you document your process, that you give a reference to it for the benefit of other admins who may want to see what others have done. List it in this table as a resource for the benefit of all. If you use someone else's by reference rather than copy, I suggest you might want to do as Cacharoth did, and give a link to a specific version. Do you have to do these things? Not at all. These are suggestions from me, and me alone, and are entirely up to you to embrace or ignore. I just think that doing this now, thinking now, documenting now, will save you trouble later, if you should for whatever reason happen to be recalled. I apologise if this message seems impersonal, but with over 130 members in the category, leaving a personal message for each of you might not have been feasible, and I feel this is important enough to violate social norms a bit. I hope that's OK. Thanks for your time and consideration, and best wishes. Larry Pieniazek NOTE: You are receiving this message because you are listed in the Wikipedia administrators open to recall category. This is a voluntary category, and you should not be in it if you do not want to be. If you did not list yourself, you may want to review the change records to determine who added you, and ask them why they added you. |
...My guinea pigs and the "A"s through "K"s having felt this message was OK to go forward with (or at least not complained bitterly to me about it :) ), today it's the turn of the "L"s through "O"s! I'm hoping that more of you chaps/chapettes will point to their own criteria instead of mine :)... it's flattering but a bit scary! :) Also, you may want to check back to the table periodically, someone later than you in the alphabet may have come up with a nifty new idea. ++Lar: t/c 00:04, 5 January 2008 (UTC).
School blocks
[edit]Hey Netsnipe, I totally agree with your philosophy of school blocks. I see you've copped criticism for your long term school blocks (Wikipedia:Administrators'_noticeboard/Archive83#Netsnipe.27s_6_Month_School_Blocks), but I honestly believe a lot of harm is prevented with long term blocks. This is probably how the ideal block log should be for long-term school vandals. Not to say that all edits from schools is vandalism, but there's simply way too much junk that comes from schools in general. Spellcast (talk) 02:40, 16 January 2008 (UTC)

SmithBlue (talk) 01:16, 18 January 2008 (UTC) Just saw that some dont like long term school blocks. Seems OK to me. SmithBlue (talk) 01:43, 18 January 2008 (UTC)

Matt Furey deleted?
[edit]Why? It seems Furey has decided he will not allow himself to be represented on Wikipedia.
How can that be? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 67.99.100.2 (talk) 21:32, 31 January 2008 (UTC)
- The version of the Matt Furey article that I deleted on April 20, 2007 was entirely a rant from someone with a grudge that contained no referenced and neutral content at all. Essentially it was two lines of libel and insults. See Wikipedia:Attack page for further details. If you provide me with your email address I'll be more than happy to email you the deleted content so you can see for yourself. -- Netsnipe ► 14:08, 1 February 2008 (UTC)
Wikiquote user Netsnipe
[edit]I am an admin on English Wikiquote, where there is a username Netsnipe whose user and user talk pages soft-redirect to the equivalent pages here. Could you let me know (A) if you are indeed the same person who registered this Wikiquote username; and (B) if you know why anon user 71.254.132.141 posted to your WQ talk page (invisibly, since it's a redirected page) about "Svogman" and referencing his own Wikipedia talk page? I am looking into some possible vandalism connections involving this IP address. You can reply to me either here or on Wikiquote. Thank you for your help. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jeffq (talk • contribs) 15:56, 5 February 2008 (UTC)
- Yes, that is my Wikiquote username. Comparing Special:Contributions/Svramon and Special:Contributions/71.254.132.141, it was quite apparent to me at the time that they were the same vandal and since I protected his talk page to prevent further unblock trolling, he/she probably decided to try and reach me via my other Wikimedia project user talk page. -- Netsnipe ► 17:24, 5 February 2008 (UTC)

I have nominated Philip H. Farber for deletion. You previously contributed to an earlier AfD on this article and it was suggested that I notify you of the current AfD. I do not feel that this article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and have explained why at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Philip H. Farber (2nd nomination). Your opinions on the matter are welcome at that same discussion page; also, you are welcome to edit the article to address these concerns. Thank you for your time. Template:Install RTF
[edit]The template was used and intended to be {{subst}} into the talk page of an article to make tagging of rotorcraft articles easier under the auspices of the Rotorcraft task force of WikiProject Aircraft. So, there wouldn't be any reference in articles or links to its use. --Born2flie (talk) 07:01, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
- Thanks for pointing out my mistake. The template's been undeleted. I only came across it while Googling for RTF (Rich Text Format) and wondering what a template with such a weird name was doing there with little explanation or apparent references. -- Netsnipe ► 07:05, 8 April 2008 (UTC)
Apologies
[edit]I must admit that I got carried away. I know it's him because he had used that IP address to create his user page and edited some other minor works. I got snubbed big time by that bastard when I queried him on his email as to why he doesn't bother about copyvio issue over a few of his uploaded images and adding some of these unhelpful data/infos. Can't help it but at least I got my revenge now (whatever). Pervert huh, me? Sorry for ranting like mad man. Regards.--Dave1185 (talk) 15:32, 8 April 2008 (UTC)

Ah, the fun of being an admin
[edit]Just FYI your buddy Bsrboy there used the "E-mail this user" feature to contact me to complain about the protection of Ivybridge and, of course, to complain about his treatment in general. It took me about 5 seconds of looking at the article and his own userpage to see what was up, but I thought I'd let you know what he's up to. 23skidoo (talk) 00:15, 12 April 2008 (UTC)

- At least one more; I have the same story as User:Aleta and User:23skidoo. Seeing as how this situation is in good hands, I don't feel any need to add comments on his talk page and will not respond further unless you wish it. OMG, it just occurred to me -- he's proceeding alphabetically down the list of admins. Is this an instance where we contact his service provider, or his mom, to get this stopped? Let me know if there's something further you want to have happen. Accounting4Taste:talk 03:23, 12 April 2008 (UTC)
- No sign of him having gotten past the As, so I'm not that alarmed just yet. What would be useful to do in such cases, if they persist, is to be able to disable "Wikipedia e-mail" for a given user at source. (Perhaps stewards or devs are already able to do that?) [edit]I had a feeling it might be a problem with USC's IT guys. I'll see if there is some way I can get through to them from the inside. I've noticed that if I send them an email from a non USC email address they reply with apathy. It's funny, if someone uses P2P software they jump on that right away. I’ve known people who had their computer taken by IT for downloading movies. Plus the routers at USC are hyper sensitive. It’s pretty easy for benign traffic to cause an auto shutoff of one’s connection. So it’s certain that they should be able to get on top of this. I’m not sure why they haven’t. Take That/Never Forget controversy and page protection
[edit]Hello. It is well-documented that the band Take That made the statement on its website that the editor quoted, and numerous news articles besides the one in The Times have noted the controversy. It is clear that Take That distanced itself from the musical and has had no involvement in the development of the musical. Editor Light Defender is overly sensitive to the issue, I think, because he is new to Wikipedia and is employed in the production of the musical Never Forget. I would think that it is appropriate to mention the fact and to cite the article from The Times that the editor cited. Also, I doubt that the use of the Never Forget poster image is appropriate in the article under "fair use". Best regards. -- Ssilvers (talk) 13:30, 16 April 2008 (UTC)

Re: CAT:TEMP
[edit]That's simply not fair. I didn't imply you were a bad administrator. But you deleted a very old page using an entirely misleading edit summary. General practice has been not to delete pages of banned users, especially in cases where multiple sock puppets may have been used. I apologize if I offended you, but edit summaries are the only thing that non-administrators are able to see with regard to a deleted page. If an administrator says that a page was deleted because it was in CAT:TEMP, then there is an obligation to ensure that that is true. The deletion form always allows for a custom summary if that is what is required. --MZMcBride (talk) 06:38, 21 April 2008 (UTC)
You put a long-term block in place, that seemingly expired a couple days ago. I just thought I should let you know they're already back at it. Cheers, xenocidic (talk) 13:13, 22 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi. This guy has created numerous accounts to evade his original block, as well as using several IPs. He insists on having his own way with articles and will not discuss his edits. I aways recognise him instantly, so recognisable are his edits. He's a pest, and I suggest we can do without him. --Rodhullandemu (Talk) 18:51, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
- I'm just seeing whether a fresh approach from a different admin can lead to a less antagonistic response and hopefully some reform at the root cause of their original block before he/she hops back onto the sockpuppetry treadmill. But judging from this teenager's poor English skills so far, I'm starting to be very doubtful that they're even mature enough to be on Wikipedia. -- Netsnipe ► 19:05, 24 April 2008 (UTC)
- Perhaps, but I've had him for about three months now, and I've tried pointing him at policy, discussing his edits and why they're unconstructive, and I've lost count of how many accounts he's registered to evade his original block. If you think he's salvageable, feel free to keep an eye on his edits. He's also not too hot on image policy, which to me is a big no-no. --Rodhullandemu (Talk) 19:10, 24 April 2008 (UTC)

Unblocking notices
[edit]Whoopsie. Apparently Huggle does add those sorts of templates when blocking. I went back and added {{Anonblock|sig=~~~~ }} to all of my IP blocks longer than 48 hours that didn't already have a school header to them. In the future, if I'm blocking more than 24 hours, I'll drop a template in the block summary and on the IP page. Thanks for catching my error. MBisanz talk 20:24, 28 April 2008 (UTC)

Sock wars
[edit]Hi, I have been caught up in a sock war where users are unable to create accounts. The site that is hard blocked I am unable to edit from I am having to use a proxy to get via the hard blocking which I shouldnt really have to do. Can you please put me on the IP block exempt so that I dont get caught up in this mess because it is really annoying. Stunner2008 (talk) 19:51, 16 May 2008 (UTC)
- I'd highly discourage that, and would in fact recommend this user be blocked for block evasion. The fact that this user is on a proxy immediately after I protected this user's talk page when they swore to start a "sock war" is extremely suspicious. They also accused me of blocking them, which a quick glance at the block log will show is not true, which further implies to me this user isn't who they claim to be. See also this IP, where they tried a similar story to evade his block, and these three others. I'm not blocking myself as I want a sanity check that I'm not going paranoid, but I'm pretty sure this guy is a block evader. Hersfold (t/a/c) 22:18, 16 May 2008 (UTC)

[edit]Hmmm. I hate blocking school IPs because for every Is Gay Lulz moron, there are x good kids who want to add important stuff about Bart Simpson :-) I tend to block short on schools because (unlike vandal kid in bedroom on their IP) in half an hour or an hour their IT lesson will be over and they'll be outta there. [edit]Just saw that you unblocked StewieGriffin!, saying that "WP:3RR applies to articles, not one's own RFA". That's wrong; 3RR applies everywhere. Wikipedia:Three-revert rule#Exceptions doesn't list any particular namespace aside from User: as being exempt from 3RR.
Note that I'm not contesting the unblock. I'm just saying that your provided rationale isn't accurate, and dropping you a line. EVula // talk // ☯ // 19:35, 4 June 2008 (UTC)
- I knew that Netsnipe's rationale wasn't entirely correct and knew of this as I wrote the 3RR admin guide ;-) - I believed, from a look at the RfA's history, that he was edit warring, but realise that there was a consensus against the block - so fair enough. :-) Scarian Call me Pat! 20:20, 4 June 2008 (UTC)

BLOCKED IP????
[edit]Hi, this isn't a major concern of mine, but I am just wonderring why my IP address has been blocked. When I go to edit Wikipedia pages directly, without logging in to my Wikipedia account, I get a message saying: "You are currently unable to edit pages on Wikipedia. You can still read pages, but cannot edit, change, or create them. Editing from 81.153.64.0/18 (your account, IP address, or IP address range) has been disabled by Netsnipe for the following reason(s):" Can you please tell me why this is, as I have only just noticed this, and also do not know why you would have blocked it as as far as I am aware not vandalism or problems have been caused by this IP address on Wikipedia. I am just a casual user who occasionally edits or creates wikipedia pages / articles in my free time, and I do not have any malicious intent towards Wikipedia or any other site for that matter.
Can you please contact me via my talk page as to why this block may have been imposed on my IP address, and can you please remove this block as you can see that I have no malicious intent and have not vandalised Wikipedia before. I have better things to do with my time than **** up someone else's (or my own) hard work on this site.

- This is affecting me too: I normally log in, but occasionally it's handy to make a very quick edit, and I now can't do that. It's particularly annoying that the message says "...has been disabled by Netsnipe for the following reason(s):" but then doesn't give a reason! The block is in place until March, and with a block of that length especially, it would be good to have a reason given. Loganberry (Talk) 00:42, 7 August 2008 (UTC)

External link question in work at home parent article
[edit]Hi Netsnipe,
I was wondering if te link to http://www.thewahmmagazine.com can be added. I updated the entry to include other WAHP jobs as well as information about the digital magazine that's dedicated to WAHPs. But, since I own the site, I didn't place a link to it as per Wikipedia guidelines. I think that it should probably go in the reference section after the phrase "digital magazine for work at home parents" rather than as a direct link. It could also go to reviews of the magazine, but I'm not sure which would make more sense.
Thanks! (Great entry by the way.) Cheers,
