New Page Reviewer newsletter February 2020

Hello Sagotreespirit,

Source Guide Discussion

The first NPP source guide discussion is now underway. It covers a wide range of sources in Ghana with the goal of providing more guidance to reviewers about sources they might see when reviewing pages. Hopefully, new page reviewers will join others interested in reliable sources and those with expertise in these sources to make the discussion a success.

Redirects

New to NPP? Looking to try something a little different? Consider patrolling some redirects. Redirects are relatively easy to review, can be found easily through the New Pages Feed. You can find more information about how to patrol redirects at WP:RPATROL.

Discussions and Resources
Refresher

Geographic regions, areas and places generally do not need general notability guideline type sourcing. When evaluating whether an article meets this notability guideline please also consider whether it might actually be a form of WP:SPAM for a development project (e.g. PR for a large luxury residential development) and not actually covered by the guideline.

Review of "Imageability"

hi Sagotreespirit – I appreciate your quick review of Imageability. A question related to it...
In the NewPagesFeed, I noticed the article was tagged "Previously deleted" – can you recommend a good way of finding the previous AfD discussion for this article, if one exists? A search of the archives did not surface anything. I appreciate your thought. Stussll (talk) 08:08, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

@Stussll: Search Special:Log. It was deleted as a neologism back in 2006, but it looks notable enough in 2020. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 08:10, 15 February 2020 (UTC)
Oh, perfect. I think I got it...thank you, Sagotreespirit! Stussll (talk) 08:17, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

references in a list article

If all references are already in the articles linked to on the list, any reason to copy them over to the list article itself? Dream Focus 15:37, 15 February 2020 (UTC)

@Dream Focus: You should still include a few, like in the lead section. Lists need to have references. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 16:53, 23 February 2020 (UTC)

Sikkim Tea

@Sagotreespirit: Hi, hope you are doing well. I have collected some amount of information for the article draft of Sikkim Tea that you suggested some time ago. I already left a message few days earlier but you didn't reply. And then the the entire page was moved to the archive so I didn't know if you got my message. So here I am, Typing this message again. So,if you are free, I might want some suggestions. You can find the material to read in my sandbox. You will find the link to my sandbox on my user page. Thanks in advance for your time. DishitaBhowmik 12:21, 24 February 2020 (UTC)

@Dishita Bhowmik: I get a lot of messages, so if don't reply, just ping me again. The Sikkim tea draft in User:Dishita Bhowmik/sandbox looks like a good start. Just add more references. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 19:39, 24 February 2020 (UTC)
@Sagotreespirit: It's alright. I have seen many other admins having the same problem. As for the references, the biggest issue I am facing is that there is not enough coverage of tea estates of sikkim other than Temi tea garden. However I am trying. DishitaBhowmik 06:09, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
There is an unrelated thing I want to ask. Where did you get your user name from? It's kind of interesting and mystic... DishitaBhowmik 06:09, 25 February 2020 (UTC)
@Dishita Bhowmik: I'm into Papuan anthropology, and sago trees are quite important in that part of the world. I just decided to add "spirit" at the end to make it sound even more interesting. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 23:14, 26 February 2020 (UTC)

Applicability across pages

Greetings, friend. I understand and fully support your edit to make Wikipedia's content more neutral. Thank you for that! Given that I had been looking at other articles about lawyers to understand how to write a new article about a newsworthy lawyer, I had seen that other articles do sometimes mention that an attorney has appeared in National Trial Lawyers ranking. Is this a problem in most cases, or was there something specific that damaged the article that I tried my hand at creating? - Buckaboob Bonsai (talk) 03:58, 2 March 2020 (UTC)

My eye is especially caught with this section as being very probably no-good. But what about the numerous others? - Buckaboob Bonsai (talk) 04:00, 2 March 2020 (UTC)

@Buckaboob Bonsai: Many of the awards sections in the other articles probably also shouldn't be in there because they make the articles look like PR spam. Focus on actually adding useful encyclopedic content and what the readers really need to know, not awards because they make you look like you're trying to turn an encyclopedia article into something from your e-mail's spam folder. If there's a notable award with its own article, add a dry, simple sentence about it. Wikipedia is not PR: WP:IBA. Instead, make it read more like a history book. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 11:53, 2 March 2020 (UTC)
@Buckaboob Bonsai: Many Wikipedia articles are messy, but the truth is that volunteers don't have the time to systematically remove advertising language and problematic content from every single article on here due to the sheer size of Wikipedia. And for every promotional article that you see out there, there are definitely at least 10 others that tried to have such content on Wikipedia but got removed, deleted, or even SALTed. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 12:09, 2 March 2020 (UTC)

Timothy Usher

Hello, Thank You for your important article "Harald Hammarström". Would You like to create article "Timothy Usher" ? Please let me know. (Jkrn111 (talk) 13:40, 6 March 2020 (UTC)).

@Jkrn111: There is not enough information about Timothy Usher online. Hardly any biographical details can be found online. Can you find them? — Sagotreespirit (talk) 18:38, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

Draft: InfoBeans

Could you please take a moment to review the Draft: InfoBeans and suggest the specific changes required to make it notable for inclusion in Wikipedia. Everything in the article is sourced from news articles, official reports of the company. If there are particular statements you object to I would appreciate you letting me know and I can rephrase them.

I am not getting a clear idea about how this article is not meeting the guideline as I can see the similar articles in the mainspace and are active. Reviewed the below articles and many more with the similar flow of content and third party references used:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Persistent_Systems https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HCL_Technologies

I'm willing to work with you to remove or rephrase the article to meet the notability guideline of Wikipedia. Please help me in editing the content.

Thank you!1994vd (talk) 05:41, 11 March 2020 (UTC)

@1994vd: Please take a look at WP:IBA. The draft is all about awards and acquisitions. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 00:17, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

Tayap

I am the author of the recent grammar of Tayap and I have been working on the language for thirty years. I updated the page to represent the recently published grammar. The material in the article that I have removed is incorrect and it was for that reason I edited it. Please restore my edits (including my deletion of the comment "Taiap has been classified as a Torricelli language by Usher (2020)" because that is based on no knowledge of the language) and remove your re-instated edits. This is the first time I have edited anything on Wikipedia and I didn't realize that one ought to go through the procedure you alerted me to.Kwemsawir (talk) 19:37, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

@Kwemsawir: Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. I have also been working on Papuan linguistics for many years, so your input is highly appreciated. Although I agree that Usher's classification is likely wrong, Wikipedia articles about languages typically list a variety of classifications, even if they are likely spurious. We are simply saying this so-and-so classifies this language as such, but we wouldn't be able to argue whether his classifications are right or wrong, due to the policies laid out at WP:NPOV and WP:SYNTH. Also, we should not remove content about Taiap from Foley (2018). Instead, we should add to that and write about how the content in the new book about Tayap differs from that of the other book. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 20:05, 15 March 2020 (UTC)

Thank you. The problem with Foley's article is that his 2018 summary is based on my previous work -- some of which he misinterpreted (there are not two third person plural pronouns, for example. I have no idea where he got that from) -- and ALL of which has been superseded by my current grammar. Since Foley's description of Tayap is based solely on my earlier work, which has now been amended, I see no point in retaining his (outdated and incorrect) descriptions. This is the sort of thing that can only confuse an interested reader. It also implies that Foley's description of the language is based on his own data and analysis, which it is not -- as he himself explains in the article cited. The same with Usher. As far as I can tell, there is no basis for his classification -- certainly none is given in the reference. Once again, if the point of the article is to inform, rather than just collate a bunch of random (and incorrect) information about the language offered by people who have no real knowledge of it, then please amend the article back to what I posted a few weeks ago.Kwemsawir (talk) 16:26, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

@Kwemsawir: Thank you for your detailed explanation. In that case, I trust you're the expert here, and we certainly appreciate your expertise here. Just make sure to write out your justifications for why certain passages need to be removed, because we have plenty of vandals here on Wikipedia who delete useful content without saying why, and we wouldn't want to confuse you with those other guys. Additionally, I would strongly recommend rewriting the content instead of outright removing it. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 11:06, 22 March 2020 (UTC)
I'll also be happy to see a basic vocabulary list of Tayap if you have one. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 11:09, 22 March 2020 (UTC)

Thank you. I tried to rewrite some of the info in the article (such as the table of pronouns) but as you undoubtedly can tell by now I am not terribly computer savvy and the codes, etc. are beyond me unfortunately. Given that, I thought it best to simply delete the incorrect information rather than leave it there. This is the first time I have attempted to do anything on Wikipedia and I apologize if I have offended anybody or appeared to be a vandal. I plead ignorance. I was only trying to correct an entry that I indeed am the expert on. I don't have a basic vocabulary list of Tayap, but the recently published grammar includes a full dictionary of the language, with translations in both Tok Pisin and English.Kwemsawir (talk) 08:46, 23 March 2020 (UTC)

I just checked and I see that the entry is unchanged. Can I ask that you cede this page to me? I value the fact that you took the time and put in the effort to create the page. But it feels silly that I have to negotiate with you to revise the entry about a language that I am the only non-Gapun person who knows anything about. If you want to discuss this further please contact me through my university email, since obviously you know who I am, even though I don't know who you are. If you agree that I know more about this little language than you or anyone else, please re-instate the edits I made before you restored them. Alternatively, please correspond with me outide this platform to help me understand how I can add to the entry. Thank you! Kwemsawir (talk) 21:53, 24 March 2020 (UTC)

@Kwemsawir: I'll cede this over to you now. Your expertise is strongly needed for Taiap language and Gapun. Thank you for explaining who you are and demonstrating that you are indeed the authority on this topic. The reason we're like this on Wikipedia is because we get many attempts from sneaky vandals, but you are clearly not one of them. I'll be looking forward to your improvements! — Sagotreespirit (talk) 05:34, 25 March 2020 (UTC)
But if you want to correct something from Foley (2018), please replace the information with the correct, updated content in the newer Tayap book. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 05:40, 25 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi @sagotreespirit

I submitted an article yesterday which you reverted to draft stats due to no citations. I went through and added many good citations and plan on adding even more. The Article was about a prominent IT company in Baltimore and there are many similar and lesser known companies like theirs that have wiki pages. I do not work for DP Solutions but I am working to help get some of these well known regional organizations a wiki page they deserve since they service companies nationwide. (SMR518 (talk) 19:04, 18 March 2020 (UTC))

@SMR518: First of all, take a look at WP:OSE and WP:IBA, then you can submit the newly referenced version again through WP:AFC. Second, what are draft stats and wiki pages? We have Wikipedia:Namespaces and Wikipedia:Articles here on Wikipedia. Many of those similar lesser-known companies are on Deletionpedia if that's what you mean. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 00:12, 21 March 2020 (UTC)

Hi. As I was linking up the river articles you created, I came across a discrepancy here. Evans had Ngkontar and Ngkolmpu as distinct languages, but Glottolog defines Ngkontar as Ngkolmpu, and Usher doesn't list Ngkontar as a language. I removed it and left a bullet point, but if you have Evans handy, I thought you might want to check if Glotto made a mistake. — kwami (talk) 11:21, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

@Kwamikagami: Evans is the authority here. Glottolog regularly makes mistakes. I'd follow Evans, not Glottolog. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 15:33, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

Thanks. I checked Evans, looks like it's just a line-wrapping issue. — kwami (talk) 17:34, 29 March 2020 (UTC)

NG rivers

I removed "May River" as a synonym of Arai River, as it's in the wrong location to be the source of the name of the Left May languages. Please correct if I got that wrong. Also, now I don't know if those were named for the left bank of the May River, or if it's the Left May River because it's the "May" river on the left bank of the Sepik, as opposed perhaps to another May River on the right bank. — kwami (talk) 02:29, 30 March 2020 (UTC)

Found some more Cebuano links for Wikipedia:WikiProject Papua New Guinea/Geography stubs, using the Malay words for 'river' etc. Some are on WP-sv too, and one w a decent map on WP-nl. There are probably more -- I think I've found 3 under spelling variants, but if we consider colonial vs post names, I'm sure there's others. So far I've only created Soari River myself. I'm sure I'll get around to others eventually, but it'll be slow going. — kwami (talk) 22:56, 30 March 2020 (UTC)

G2 vs G7

Hi there. After looking at a speedy deletion nomination of yours I wanted to clarify something. A test page is not the same as one that an author has blanked. If the author has blanked it, that is a G7. A test page is something that experiments with some parts of Wikipedia. If you have questions about this please ping me here or leave a message on my talk page. Happy editing, Barkeep49 (talk) 17:26, 5 May 2020 (UTC)

@Barkeep49: Yes, I'm aware of the difference. I assumed that Tryinfobox had been accidentally created because the user was testing an infobox. Hello from Lara

Hello Sagotreespirit! My name is Lara and I accidentally found your userpage. I'm relatively new to Wikipedia, so I thought I'd reach out and say hi! Not sure how meeting each other works here so excuse me if I'm being a little weird. I hope you are doing well! I see that you have a lot of great contributions here on WIki, so I also wanted to say good job! I want to try to get better at editing as well. Lara Vichnezka (talk) 08:09, 16 May 2020 (UTC)

Adding local common names

Hi Sagotreespirit, nice to meet you! I noticed you've been adding some local names to Wikipedia articles. Because there are so many languages spoken around the world, we can't possibly include all of them. If we include common names in some languages but others, that leads to questions about which common names get included or excluded and why.

I don't think adding these local common names is a great fit for Wikipedia's goals--after all, it's not a dictionary or an indiscriminate collection of information. However, Wikispecies might be a good place to add this information. At the bottom of every Wikispecies page there is a section for vernacular names. If the language you want to add (Kwaza, for example) isn't an accepted part of the template, you can request that it be added here. Hope that helps. Enwebb (talk) 20:45, 18 May 2020 (UTC)

@Enwebb: Thanks for the Wikispecies suggestion! — Sagotreespirit (talk) 12:24, 19 May 2020 (UTC)

If you or other reviewers come across articles in the queue where an acceptance/decline hinges on specialist knowledge, this list should serve to facilitate contact with a fellow reviewer.

To end on a positive note, the backlog has dropped below 1,500, so thanks for all of the hard work some of you have been putting into the AfC process!

Sent to all Articles for Creation reviewers as a one-time notice. To opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery to your user talk page. Regards, Sam-2727 (talk)

Explanation on article compared to competitors

We recently edited https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Titania_Ltd

However after looking at your comments and reviewing this against their competitors listed on Wikipedia there is no difference in terms of tone nor the amount of information on the post. Please can you recommend or highlight what we need to remove?

Malagasy mammal names

I would like to suggest you move this material to a new list-class article. You have compiled a lot of information. However, this is also a linguistic subject not usually covered in the mammal list articles. WolfmanSF (talk) 00:13, 31 May 2020 (UTC)

@WolfmanSF:  DoneSagotreespirit (talk) 03:03, 31 May 2020 (UTC)
You might also consider copying, or moving, the Malagasy names for extinct megafauna, if you think that information is useful. WolfmanSF (talk) 04:50, 31 May 2020 (UTC)

Hi Sagotreespirit! I have tried to access Zorc (2019), but the page is down[1]. Were you able to access it lately? And is it a self-published paper, or a preprint? –Austronesier (talk) 07:10, 5 June 2020 (UTC)

@Austronesier: Looks like the URL got moved, so I've fixed that. It's a preprint. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 12:47, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
Apparently, it will appear here, or already has appeared; the "Archive" series is great, but has a most frustrating mode of distribution (every provincial university in Indonesia or Malaysia has better distributed journals). –Austronesier (talk) 15:14, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
Eh, I have just seen the full citation in Glottolog[2]. –Austronesier (talk) 15:43, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
@Austronesier: Certainly not self-published! — Sagotreespirit (talk) 17:00, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
@Sagotreespirit: Frankly, even if it were, I wouldn't mind in the case of calibres like David Zorc, per WP:SELFPUB. :) –Austronesier (talk) 17:16, 5 June 2020 (UTC)
@Austronesier: And in the case of Papuan languages and other poorly documented languages, self-published manuscripts may be the only existing data for many languages. — Sagotreespirit (talk) 17:19, 5 June 2020 (UTC)

Dear Sagotreespirit, I know you were not a considerable editor on the article below, but the creator of it seems to have had their account locked. Thus, they cannot contest this proposed deletion. So, when I saw that you had made one (1) contribution, I decided it might be worth it to get your opinion on whether this article should be deleted.

Notice

The article Nguyen Kim Hong has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Possible notablity issue.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

New Page Reviewer newsletter June 2020

Hello Sagotreespirit,

Your help can make a difference

NPP Sorting can be a great way to find pages needing new page patrolling that match your strengths and interests. Using ORES, it divides articles into topics such as Literature or Chemistry and on Geography. Take a look and see if you can find time to patrol a couple pages a day. With over 10,000 pages in the queue, the highest it's been since ACPERM, your help could really make a difference.

Google Adds New Languages to Google Translate

In late February, Google added 5 new languages to Google Translate: Kinyarwanda, Odia (Oriya), Tatar, Turkmen and Uyghur. This expands our ability to find and evaluate sources in those languages.

Discussions and Resources
  • A discussion on handling new article creation by paid editors is ongoing at the Village Pump.
  • Also at the Village Pump is a discussion about limiting participation at Articles for Deletion discussion.
  • A proposed new speedy deletion criteria for certain kinds of redirects ended with no consensus.
  • Also ending with no change was a proposal to change how we handle certain kinds of vector images.

Article Cleanup for Draft:Triple The Mogul

Hi i am seeking your help on a draft i made for https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Triple_The_Mogul

i believe i did a pretty good job and listed reliable and notable sources, but since this is my first article i am not sure how to clean it up and optimize it. Can you help me ?

Here are a few links from The Blast, Jerusalem Post and The Source magazine, all of which i believe properly reach the criteria for WP:BASIC. https://theblast.com/c/sean-kingston-professional-boxing-league-rappers-ufc https://www.jpost.com/special-content/jewish-rapper-triple-the-mogul-teams-up-with-sean-kingston-to-start-pro-boxing-league-for-rappers-632748 https://thesource.com/2020/06/22/sean-kingston-boxing/ Jayzhizbovvs (talk) 10:23, 26 June 2020 (UTC)

Languages of the South American Lowlands

Thank you for your extensive edits on the languages of the South American Lowlands, which I've been following for quite some time — I've been avoiding writing stuff based on my own research on Macro-Jê because I'm not sure how it relates to the NPOV and OR policies, so thank you for doing it for me. I'd like to know if there is any meaningful way I could contribute, either by sharing my work in some editable format so that you don't have to extract all those tables or by actually contributing (but then again, I'm in serious doubt regarding what I can and what I can't do wrt WP:NPOV and WP:OR). Maybe one could set some sort of a marathon for writing one stub per day for each Macro-Jê language using modern sources.

Prose and tags

Hi, hope you are good. Could you help add prose format to my article please (draft:Scott Jenkins ultra endurance runner) as I am unsure how to do this as well as adding tags for a speedier review. Your advice last time was super helpful as this is my first wiki article. Thanks Abbyfleming1983 (talk) 09:51, 7 November 2020 (UTC)

Trouble with citations

Greetings,

I'm trying to fix issues on the Drone Awards page and am confused about the source citation errors.

All of the sources I've found are from major publications writing about/reporting on this international competition. I'm not sure what more is needed.

Thanks for any help you can give me. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Sienawards (talkcontribs) 19:50, 8 November 2020 (UTC)
