An RfC has been created on Talk:Biopsychiatry controversy on the subject: "Is the majority viewpoint of the psychiatric profession, and particularly of the psychiatric research community, that the biopsychiatric model of psychiatry is, by and large, accepted or rejected?" Comments from editors involved in this article/project may prove useful. HrafnTalkStalk 06:49, 6 January 2008 (UTC)

Anti-psychiatry

The article Anti-psychiatry is currently tagged for {{POV}}. Since this is within the scope of this project (barely -- but it has your tag), I was wondering if some editors here would like to improve the article to cover more viewpoints -- in particular, the conventional view that psychiatry is ethical and efficacious. At the moment there are problems in the article of WP:UNDUE weight to minority viewpoints, as well as the common problem of insufficient citations.

Also, for those neutral observers -- if you read the article over and don't see any bias, feel free to remove the tag.

CRGreathouse (t | c) 14:24, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

  • I removed the POV tag, as it seems to me the article does justice to this alternative movement and is rooted in sources. I added one "fact" request for the claim on professionals and academics following this philosophy. Pundit|utter 15:25, 15 January 2008 (UTC)

Hello. A couple of us at WikiProject Anthropology have nominated kinship to be the anthropology collaboration of the month. As it's a topic that's also within the scope of your wikiproject, I just thought I'd let you know in case any of you would like to join in the collaboration. So far we've started looking at the main sources on the talk page. Robotforaday (talk) 15:48, 24 January 2008 (UTC)

The article, List of autonomous areas by country, is currently up for nomination as a Featured List at Wikipedia:Featured list candidates/List of autonomous areas by country. If you have the time, please vote on the article so that it can be improved if necessarily or promoted if it deserves it. Thanks! Gary King (talk) 16:17, 25 February 2008 (UTC)

Test of automated article selection for WP:1.0

Hi, we're testing a system for automated article selection for offline releases, based on the assessment tags you have on article talk pages. We have some test data on a few sociology articles, and we'd really appreciate your feedback. We realise that the list is far from complete, but the important thing is that the ordering of the articles should be right, in terms of importance/quality (with more emphasis on importance). There are three sets of results, ranked using different formulae. Have the articles been ranked in a reasonable order? Please take a look here and leave comments either here or there. Thanks a lot! New form of human trafficking

In February, a travel agent in Ghana chartered a Ghana International Airlines aircraft on the pretext that a group of 'Ghanian' tourists would be spending two weeks in Barbados. The aircraft left Ghana around 1 Feb 08, and was supposed to return to Barbados to 1) deliver any group of 'tourists' and 2) take the first lot back to Ghana. The aircraft didn't arrive as expected on 15 February, and to this day (15 April 08) most of those 'tourists', who turned out end up coming from both Ghana and Nigeria, are still stranded in Barbados, with the Ghanian government dragging its heels on their return. The rest have basically left Barbados for other countries (not long after arriving there). Due to the fact many of these 'tourists' are now working in Barbados (construction, etc), and some have gone on the record that they don't want to go back to Ghana, they want to be allowed to stay in Barbados to work, it is now believed that this is a new form of human trafficking. I think this would make an interesting addition to the Human trafficking article, and could also help build a Barbados-Ghana relations article as well. Having little time to add this, I am posting this at the following: Talk:Human trafficking, WikiProject Crime and Criminal Biography, WikiProject Sociology, WikiProject International relations, WikiProject African diaspora, WikiProject Human rights. Perhaps contributors to the Human trafficking article or wikiprojects could look at it further and include it in the article, as this hasn't gathered much attention outside of Barbados and Ghana, and if it is human trafficking, it will change the modus operandi of traffickers. Searches of google and google news for barbados+ghana will return plenty of results, mainly from Ghana or Barbados which can be used. --Россавиа Диалог 17:35, 15 April 2008 (UTC)

Hi. I'm not sure if this article belongs in this project, but I thought it might. I tagged it. Feel free to look over it and decide whether or not to keep it in the project. Thanks. AgnosticPreachersKid (talk) 04:02, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

  • Looks nice. Indeed its belonging to the project is not that clear, but I'm not opposing it neither. Pundit|utter 16:51, 17 April 2008 (UTC)

List of topics: sociology of food

I've merge Sociology of food (which was essentially empty) into List of topics: sociology of food. The result is an equally awful article, except that it's a list... Can someone from the project take a look? It's not even clear to me that this deserves an article. Thanks. Pichpich (talk) 20:15, 3 May 2008 (UTC)

Fear of youth

This is just a notice that the article entitled Fear of youth is being considered for deletion because there apparently is no such thing. • Freechild'sup? 19:30, 8 May 2008 (UTC)

Demographic transition

I've tagged the article demographic transition for original research and lack of citations. Perhaps someone with the requisite specialist knowledge could have a look at it? There are entire sections of the article which currently seem to be composed largely of OR, and the whole article has few references. Beejaypii (talk) 11:26, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

WHAT???? i think by fear of youth the real tag that should be given is moral panics and folk devils!!!! hee hee —Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.195.71.46 (talk) 01:28, 12 August 2009 (UTC)

Does this fall under the scope of this project? I couldn't think of anything else (we don't have a WP:WikiProject Death). Maybe someone here could assess it for importance (presumably low)? Richard001 (talk) 06:07, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

Wikiproject Prisons

If anyone's interested, I've proposed a new wikiproject for the creation of articles regarding specific prisons here. --Cdogsimmons (talk) 20:53, 8 June 2008 (UTC)

American mutilation of Japanese war dead

1945 image of a Japanese soldier's decapitated severed head hung on a tree branch, presumably by American soldiers.[1][2]

I have created the article American mutilation of Japanese war dead. There have been requests for additional editors posted on the military topics portal, and to balance that I would like to see people more interested in "softer" issues to also contribute. Perhaps you may know of literature that those with "military" focus are not aware of.

2 good sources on the topic are.

  • Simon Harrison "Skull Trophies of the Pacific War: transgressive objects of remembrance" Journal of the Royal Anthropological Institute (free download)
  • James J. Weingartner "Trophies of War: U.S. Troops and the Mutilation of Japanese War Dead, 1941-1945" Pacific Historical Review (available from JSTOR)

Help getting more editors involved would be very much appreciated. Thank you kindly.--Stor stark7 Speak 14:30, 11 June 2008 (UTC)

Image Talcott Parsons

Talcott Parsons

User:Thorsten1 has recently removed the image of Talcott Parsons from his article, with the argument:

"remove image - no image at all is still better than this. The colors are hurting people's eyes and it's not even very similar."

I think this is unacceptable. -- Marcel Douwe Dekker (talk) 14:52, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

If it can be verified that this image is similar to the subject, I'd support its restoration. --Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 21:27, 20 June 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your support. This illustration is the work of a Japanese illustrator, which has uploaded a serie of similair portrets, see here. There is no doubt about it that this illustrator has his own style, which you can like or not. Now the illustration is used in the Japanese Wikipedia to illustrate the article Talcott Parsons, and the same in more then ten other Wikipedia's. However in the discussion on Talk:Talcott Parsons#Image Talcott Parsons these arguments doesn't seems to count. I could use a second opinion here. Thanks you. -- Marcel Douwe Dekker (talk) 22:48, 28 June 2008 (UTC)

Sociology requested articles

Wikipedia:Requested articles/Social sciences is missing a section on sociology. I think we should create it, with sociology topics spread through that page, as well as the red links from List of sociology topics and Subfields of sociology.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 21:27, 20 June 2008 (UTC)

The Sociolinguistics page needs some help. There is currently a Dialectology page, but no information concerning region on the Sociolinguistics page beyond a link to it. It would be wonderful if someone would undertake to create pages related to language and social class, age-linked language variation, and language and gender. Unfortunately I don't have the time to undertake any of these programs myself. I am therefore pleading for your help. I am also posting this message at the talk:Dialectology, User_talk:Linguistlist and talk:Sociolinguistics pages.Cnilep (talk) 20:06, 8 September 2008 (UTC)

Community GA Sweeps Review: On Hold

As part of the WikiProject Good Articles, we're doing sweeps to go over all of the current GAs and see if they still meet the GA criteria and I'm specifically going over all of the "Culture and Society" articles. I have reviewed Community and believe the article currently meets the majority of the criteria and should remain listed as a Good article. I have left this message at this WikiProject's talk page so that any interested members can assist in helping the article keep its GA status. In reviewing the article, I have found there are some issues that may need to be addressed, and I'll leave the article on hold for seven days for them to be fixed. I have left messages on the talk pages of the main contributors of the article and several other related WikiProjects. Please consider helping address the several points that I listed on the talk page of the article, which shouldn't take too long to fix if multiple editors assist in the workload. If you have any questions, let me know on my talk page and I'll get back to you as soon as I can. Happy editing! --Nehrams2020 (talk) 05:02, 22 June 2008 (UTC)

I have also reviewed African American culture and it has a few issues that need to be addressed. I would appreciate any assistance of members of this project on helping improve the article. Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! For the 1.0 Editorial Team, §hepBot (Disable) 20:50, 4 July 2008 (UTC)

Just to let people know that I've removed the WikiProject category from the main Category:Sociology since content categories shouldn't contain information about Wikipedia projects (as it is self-referential). This was the original situation, but an anon IP editor did add it to the main sociology category a while ago, and since folks here might be used to it appearing in the main Sociology category I thought I'd leave a note. Sociology course using Wikipedia

A course I am teaching will have some students contribute to Wikipedia. Please see list of users and articles at Wikipedia:School and university projects/User:Piotrus/Summer 2008 if interested. We would all appreciate if members of WikiProject Sociology would offer advice to the student, and review the progress of their work. The assignment will last till the July 30.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 17:40, 17 July 2008 (UTC)

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Sociology

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 22:44, 15 September 2008 (UTC)
