London Buses route 20 is a Transport for London contracted bus route in London, England, United Kingdom. The service is currently contracted to Arriva London.

History

The 20 commenced operation on 7 September 1968 as a replacement for route 38A from Loughton to Leyton with an extension to the newly opened Walthamstow Central station on the Victoria Line. At the time of the route 20 introduction, there were already two other routes in the Loughton area with 20 numbers, the 20A and 20B. As the new route ran parallel with the 20A for many miles, the new route was titled 20.

In 1986, the route was tendered out to Eastern National after Loughton garage closed, with their CityBus subsidiary operating the route from a base in Walthamstow. The contract with Eastern National lasted until 7th March 1992, when Grey-Green won the contract operating the route from Barking (DX). In the late 1990s, Cowie Group (which owned Grey-Green) rebranded themselves as Arriva. Between 1st June 1998 and 9th March 2002, Capital Citybus (later First London) operated the school journeys from Northumberland Park (NP) and later Hackney (H).

On 26th April 2003, the route was converted to low-floor operation. When the contract was renewed on 24th March 2007, the route was moved to Edmonton (EC) depot.[1]

Blue Triangle has gained the contract of route 20 and from 24 March 2012, they will be operating it, using Volvo B9TL 10.4m / Wright Eclipse Gemini 2 [2].

Vehicles

The route first started using RTs. The RTs were replaced with Daimler DMS buses until about the early 1980s, when the route started using Leyland Nationals and Leyland Titans. When Eastern National took over after the closure of Loughton garage in 1985, they used Leyland Nationals and Bristol VRs. Cowie Group then took over using new Alexander ALX200s and Volvo Olympians.

In 2003 new Volvo B7TLs with Wright Eclipse Gemini bodywork were introduced to the route. These were replaced with older DAF DB250LF/Alexander ALX400s in March 2007.[1]
