Updating a Biography Help
I updated a biography page for John P Sanders. I am working with him so all of the content was approved by him. All of it was rejected. I want to add information about the philanthropy work he is doing now and more information about his career before he worked for the federal government. Do I have to cite every single detail about his life? I just don't understand why it was all rejected by Wikipedia.

need a template

can anyone know a template or make a new date mathematics template that converts a days result entered say 878days 11hr 31min into 878.480 days. it can better if there is a template that directly returns this 3 decimal placed days value to be used in place of a normal date template say that returns 190 days, 20 hours and 53 minutes. In that case it will return 190.870 days. it will be helpful for editing duration records at list of spaceflight records page currently i am using , but it updates only once a day, while i think users will have no problem if this portion updates continously.

thank you. Chinakpradhan (talk) 01:27, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Because it amused me to do it, I have hacked a lua module that does what I think you want
→ 190.870
A simple template can be hacked to wrap that invoke.
Trappist the monk (talk) 18:40, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

thank you so much Trappist the monk. This contributed greatly to the page List of spaceflight records. Chinakpradhan (talk) 19:27, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Chinakpradhan: If you want to use the lua module, create a real template with real documentation to support it. Sandboxen hacks like the one that I wrote can and do go away without notice.
Trappist the monk (talk) 12:58, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Trappist the monk:, Can you make one. I don't know how to make a template. I just use template already made.Chinakpradhan (talk) 13:10, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

diff days:
2021-04-09 07:42:41 → 190.870
added another parameter |precision= which defaults to 3 accepts any positive integer:
→ 190.87017
Template needs documentation. You can do that part; Template:diff days/doc
Trappist the monk (talk) 14:54, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Trappist the monk: from my side I have done what I think must be written at Template:Diff days/doc. If anything is left please tell me, so i can do it. And please tell how to show the documentation on Template: Diff days page. Chinakpradhan (talk) 17:58, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Here you go

Add this event, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sandy_Hook_Elementary_School_shooting

There are 18 other elementary schools listed — Preceding unsigned comment added by StryderBolts (talkcontribs) 05:14, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@StryderBolts: Hi there! The best place to make a suggestion to update and/or rename an article (e.g. List of attacks related to secondary schools) is the article's talk page (e.g. Talk:List of attacks related to secondary schools). If you choose to do so, adding a "please" and "thank you" would go a long way. Thanks, and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 04:32, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A11 vs A7

A11 is meant for articles that were obviously made up "without a credible claim of importance or significance." A7 is meant for articles that have "no indication of importance." So, shouldn't everything deletable under A11 also be deletable under A7? I.hate.spam.mail.here (talk | contributions) 05:58, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@I.hate.spam.mail.here: A7 also has to be in one of the categories of people, animals, organizations, web content, events. A11 is for discoveries/coinages/etc by the writer of the article or someone they know. As I understand it, this is more about like, new words, philosophies, theories, games, equations, inventions, etc. Things can lack credible claims of importance without being “made up” by the author or their friends. And also something can lack a credible claim of importance or significance and be in one of those five categories, without being something the writer of the article (or their friends) came up with. Requesting deletion of revdel tag

Request: Can you please remove the revdel tag at World War 3 (video game)? Thanks.— Preceding unsigned comment added by F1V8V10V6 (talkcontribs)

@F1V8V10V6: Since copyright violations can put Wikipedia in legal jeopardy, the tag must stand there until the nessesary revision deletions have been carried out by an Administrator. Victor Schmidt (talk) 12:40, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How to revert controversial move?

Transport for Wales was controversially moved to Transport for Wales (government agency) with no discussion. I would like it to be reverted so that the topic can be properly discussed and consensus reached. At the very least, it is not a government agency, it is a limited company owned by the Welsh government so there could be other names proposed assuming any actual move is needed. Can someone help me put things back to where they were? 10mmsocket (talk) 10:10, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Similar dab pages

I have created a dab page for Bristol by-election. There are dab pages for Bristol West by-election, Bristol South East by-election and Bristol East by-election. Bristol by-election holds the by-elections in all the Bristol constituencies. Should it only hold by-elections in the Bristol constituency, with links in a See also section to the other three dab pages? Andysmith248 (talk) 10:59, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Personally I think it's fine that it's working as a dab for Bristol by-election as well as being top level for anyone not sure if they're after East, West or Central. One thing though, that list would be easier to read if it was grouped by constituency rather then being a year list that jumps from one constituency to another. - X201 (talk) 11:06, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

what inline tag is appropriate to tag raw, improper citations?

I see some citations (at Duomatic principle) that just have " author, title, [year], chapter, page " in raw text after the statement to be cited. Is there an inline tag to draw attention to this? I can't fix the formatting, as I don't have access to the cited material. thanks, skakEL 15:01, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I think you're confusing citations and . . . well . . . citations. Wikipedia has citations that go at the end of the sentence, in the reference section, to say, basically, "this is where the information in this sentence came from." However, what you are seeing in that article aren't that. Take for example, this sentence: "The principle is named after one of the earlier judicial decisions in which it was recognised: Re Duomatic Ltd [1969] 2 Ch 365 . . .". There the sentence is discussing a legal case, and it is giving the proper name (or citation) for the legal case in the text. It's as if it is saying, "The principle is named after John Duomatic . . ." Only in this case it's not named after a person, it's named after a case. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 16:08, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Skakkle, for incomplete references like "Salomon v Salomon & Co Ltd [1897] AC 22, 57" there is a list of inline templates to use at Template:Citation needed#Incomplete_citations. Full citation needed may be what you want. However legal citations on Wikipedia often use a form incomprehensible to the rest of us. But cite court can help by providing a link to the case. Help

How do I make changes to a page for an organization I work for. It keeps blocking me from making any edits. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Benwagner17 (talkcontribs) 20:18, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Benwagner17 It looks like you are triggering an edit filter intended to prevent new users from adding information without citing any sources. You are also triggering an edit filter intended to prevent people from inserting spam and scam phone numbers.
That said, you should not "make changes to a page for an organization [you] work for." Please see the policy on editing with a conflict of interest and the policy on paid editing. You should use the article's talk page to make edit requests. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 20:29, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I want to be placed in wiki — Preceding unsigned comment added by Irishsuperman2k19 (talkcontribs) 22:37, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Irishsuperman2k19. "I want to be placed in wiki," is vague. Exactly how do you wish to be placed? Do you mean as the subject of an article, mentioned as a salient detail within a particular article, in a photo, as an editor, or something else? Knowing this could assist with an answer to your expressed desire. A response to you could also be helped with a question from you. Most kind regards,Hu Nhu (talk) 23:54, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to my own bio

Hello, this is low priority so if you have other more important work, please tend to that. A few years ago I went to see if anyone on Wikipedia had written anything about me and, strangely, they had. But I noticed some things that were untrue. I set up my account here for the sole purpose of correcting these errors. A little time later the changes were undone by one "Tolly4Bolly", saying that the changes were "not constructive." I was still working then and didn't have time to get into any sort of argument with some troll but now I'm retired and have time to look into this, it bothers me that some one who knows nothing about me can have my own corrections undone. I know that it's not very important (you can read about me at the entry "Kurt Streit" -- https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurt_Streit --, not much there!) but I think I should be able to at least correct falsities if not add to the biography. After all, I'm done and my story is now complete (not like it's written on the Wikipedia page).

Any help would be appreciated but, again, super low urgency. Thanks, KurtKmst321 (talk) 22:49, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Kmst321: Hello Kmst! Since you say your are the subject of the article you have a WP:COI and it's highly advised you do not edit the article directly. Also, remember that having an article about you isn't always a good thing. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 22:55, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, KurtKmst321. Please have a look at WP:AUTOPROB for suggestions on what you can do about it. ColinFine (talk) 23:11, 15 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Kmst321: Your only edit was [1]. Compare before and after your edit. It removed "External" from the "External links" heading, inserted a link directly in a heading where it doesn't belong, and changed a link to an unlinked partial url. I can understand why Tolly4bolly reverted it but saying "did not appear constructive" may have been too harsh. It looked more like good faith mistakes to me. Maybe you were just trying to change a dead link to a link which worked at the time. Both links are dead now. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:08, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. I understand now. Kmst321 (talk) 13:04, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you Colin. I'll look into it. Kmst321 (talk) 13:06, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Handling a loooooooong list of authors

I am starting a new article (User:Gronk_Oz/Graeme Stewart (immunology)) and I want to cite the author's paper in Nature. The problem is that the paper reports on an international research effort, so it has 242 listed authors. This makes for a very unwieldy Ref list. If you look at it, you will see what I mean.

I want to leave all the authors in the source, so they populate the metadata properly (and the cite journal documentation says this is required). But I want something readable in the References. I know about the display-authors=x parameter, but that displays the FIRST x authors, and this paper follows the convention that the primary authors (including my guy) are listed LAST. FWIW, some sources, including the University, refer to the authors as "Sawcer, S., Hallenthal, G., Pirinen, M., Spencer, C., Patsopoulos, N., Moutsianas, L., Dilthey, A., Su, Z., et al, Booth, D., Heard, R., Stewart, G."

So... can anybody think of a way to display the LAST x authors, or otherwise to display my guy without filling up the page?--Gronk Oz (talk) 08:24, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You may want to leave all the authors in the source, Gronk Oz, but I suspect that few people (other than yourself and 242 others, or 241 if you're one of them) will be interested in this. Too many authors spoil the credit: many of the credits are likely to be pretty much meaningless, and Wikipedia isn't an indiscriminate collection of information. If Cite Journal actually requires this (and I'll take your word for this), then I'd say ignore the requirement. You're thereby Ignoring One Rule. Liberating! (And it could be said that you're also tastefully avoiding the disruption of Wikipedia to make a point.) -- Hoary (talk) 09:10, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Gronk Oz: There is a parameter authorn-mask that can do what you want, although it’s hacky (not the intended use). Giving authorn-mask=0 suppresses the display of the n-th author. The doc is in Template:Cite_journal#Display_options.
Here’s a ref with four authors.[1]
Here’s the same ref, but showing only the first and fourth author.[2]
Does it mean you have to type 231 (=242-11) authorn-mask=0 entries in the template? Why, yes, of course. Will it break the template rendering stuff to have that many parameters? Who knows, let’s find out! Would it be better to have a proper filtering scheme (for instance, giving a list of author positions to display)? Yes, it would. Might I suggest picking one or two authors and saying "et al"? Would save a ridiculous reference. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 10:19, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Lee Vilenski: - I'm trying to do the right thing for the cite journal template, which specifies "you must still include the values for all names for metadata purposes". If that's not possible or practicable, then surely the guideline should be changed?--Gronk Oz (talk) 11:42, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The documentation is a bit over-restrictive in my opinion. The purpose of a citation is to help readers locate a copy of the source. It is highly unlikely that a reader will need all 242 author names to distinguish this article from another article. Citations are not about giving credit where credit is due; that is the duty and obligation of the publisher.
How does the article of record name the authors? At the doi landing page the authors are all lumped together into two consortiums and none are named individually. Still, you might pick Graeme and some other names and then do something like this:

Trappist the monk (talk) 12:06, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Trappist the monk: I laughed out loud at your comment that "It is highly unlikely that a reader will need all 242 author names..." And the rest of your comment is very interesting. I originally used the URL to the article in Nature, which is where the long list of authors came from (using Autofill; I did not type them all in manually). I have added that collaboration parameter, which I have never seen before. I had also came up with my own awkward-but-it-works approach for the names: I left all the names in plac, and I added "display-authors=1", so it just displays the first one et al. And then I added "author-mask=Stewart, Graeme J.; Hafler, David A.; Hauser, Stephen L.; McVean, Gil; Donnelly, Peter; Compston, Alastair" so that first author's name is replaced by that text when it displays in the reflist. It is terribly awkward, but it works! The reader sees a manageable ref, and it's there for the metadata. The only problem I can see will be that it won't support author-links.--Gronk Oz (talk) 00:09, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Personally, I consider author links a low priority. I do like your work-around for chosing other than only the initial 4 or 5 to list, but that means you made an arbitrary decision about whom to list. Also, for sci refs, I thought standard was surname and initials. David notMD (talk) 10:06, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How to anonymize contributions?

Hi, I'd like to anonymize a few contributions of mine (Under this account + an IP address). I live in the EU so I believe that is my right under the GDPR. That would also include the requests around that... I'm not sure of how to proceed though. --Spafky (talk) 09:55, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello Spafky. If you want to invoke GDPR then you will probably be invited to approach WMF Legal. They may or may not mention how they're in California and you've irrevocably agreed to release your contributions under a free copyright licence. TBH, I don't know what they will say, but you don't hear of much success coming from this avenue. More informally, editors can sometimes have their IP address removed from page histories, by following Wikipedia:Oversight. This may also apply to logged-in contributions, especially if there is personal data. A second avenue might be to ask an admin for Revision deletion. There's fairly strict criteria for deletion; I can't assess whether they would apply or whether you might be able to make a persuasive case to bend the rules a bit. Consider also, that Wikipedia get copied all over the place. This has already happened. See WP:AKASHA. -- zzuuzz (talk) 10:22, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You cannot anonymise individual contributions. You can have some of them deleted in very limited situations. For instance, if they contain private identifiable information (like zzuuzz pointed out). You can also give up your entire account have it renamed and start over, see Wikipedia:Courtesy vanishing. Note that GDPR has limits. You cannot publish a book and then demand it becomes unpublished. That's basically what your contributions to Wikipedia fall under as well. You agreed to publish your contributions under an eternal, non-revokable license to the public and you are pointed to those terms and conditions repeatedly when you make contributions. —TheDJ (talkcontribs) 10:29, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Alexander Graham Bell Vs Antonio Meucci

Wikipedia represents that Bell invented the Telephone. It is False! Bell Stole Meucci's design and erased the name and Patented the telephone because Meucci did not have the 60.00 filing fee. This Italian inventor was denied all the years and profit and notoriety because Bell was a Thief.

The US Patient office has made the change. Now it seem that Wikipedia should as well or at the very least check it out.

Hi there! Thank you for your interest in improving Wikipedia! I just you read the Telephone article, which also links to articles about Bell, Meucci, and the history of the telephone. For any article that you think should be improved, you may post your request on the article's talk page (e.g. Talk:Telephone) with a published reliable source that supports your suggestion. Hope this helps and happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 13:45, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Format error on citation

Can anyone else figure out why there is a format error on the first citation in this article? The template (Template:Cite AV media) is a bit complicated, so it's not clear to me. I'm assuming the format requires a URL? Jauerbackdude?/dude. 16:04, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Jauerback:  Fixed Looking at what's described in Help:CS1 errors#format missing url, the parameter |format= is used for if the ref is a file to specify the file type (PDF, DOC, etc.) It suggests to use |type= if it's not that, however since that ref already uses |medium= I just added the type of DVD it is to the medium parameter. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 16:23, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks! I just stumbled across the article and noticed the error. My eyes were going cross eyed trying to read through the parameters, but I didn't want to just let the error go, either. Jauerbackdude?/dude. 19:15, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Jauerback: No problem! I honestly can see why that error would come up since "format" isn't exactly clear that it is referring to the format of a file and not just the format of the reference if it's not a link. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 19:57, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

List of anthropologists

Your list of anthropologists is not complete. I hold a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the State University of New York and am published under my name in the American Ethnologist, along with other publications.

Hello Rose! Our list of anthropologists is made up of people who have been determined to be notable enough to have an article on Wikipedia. If you think you might be notable enough to have an article, I suggest you read WP:COI and WP:AUTOBIO and not create the article yourself. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 17:30, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello Rose! Wikipedia has a fairly high bar for notability for academics, and often people who request articles about themselves may not qualify even though they have a substantial research career. Certainly, I don't have enough familiarity with the field to judge how your contributions to anthropology should be assessed against those criteria. However, for the moment we can perhaps put aside the issue of notability because it seems Wikipedia already has an article on Rose Oldfield Hayes, created in 2019. As the article exists, I went ahead and added your name to the List of anthropologists; I'll leave it for others to determine whether the notability criteria are met. Blaze Wolf's recommendation to read the WP:COI and WP:AUTOBIO guidelines is a good one. Perhaps you'd be interested to help improve other Anthropology articles not directly related to your own research?Rupert Clayton (talk) 23:56, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Graphics Lab/Illustration workshop contain a section with a lot of images, raster and svg. The question of the user who opened the section, is for conversion request. SHOULD I CREATE A SINGLE WIKIPEDIA PAGE OR SEVERAL?

Hi, I want to create a wikipedia page for about 4 literary awards sponsored by one entity Texas Review Press. Each of the 4 awards has a different name and is for a different literary genre. Each of the 4 prizes have been around for over 20 years, so each of them has at least 20 prize winners each.

I'm unsure whether I should create a single wikipedia page for all the awards, or a separate page for each of the 4 prizes. Someone from Texas Review Press has indicated that they would prefer to have different wikipedia pages for each award -- I've looked at wiki pages for other literary prizes, and I see that some prizes from the same organization are listed separately while some are listed together on the same page. On the other hand, it might be easier to get an all-on-one-page submission approved -- to be split up later if needed.

(For examples of wikipedia page literary prizes, see this: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:American_fiction_awards )

One other detail. Even though Texas Review Press probably merits its own wikipedia page, there is currently no page for it, and I would not be the right person to work on that (I just want to list the prize winners). Any advice/suggestions about how to submit this? Robert J Nagle (talk) 20:09, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Do reliable sources typically combine treatment of these awards, or do they write about them separately? What we do here should not depend so much on what the award sponsors say about their creation, but on what independent sources say. —Kusma (talk) 20:44, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sometimes I see a page that is so small, and so specific, that it seems that it should combine with something else. I would, at least partially, judge based on the size of the (expected) page. I suspect that means one page, with appropriate sections. Maybe you just have to write it and see how it looks? Gah4 (talk) 20:48, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I would draft out the one page so it can cover the organization that gives out the awards. The individual ones can always be redirects and spun out later if independently notable. But if you are doing this at the request of the group, then you'll have to disclose conflict of interest per WP:COI AngusW🐶🐶F (barksniff) 20:58, 16 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
If there isn't even an article here about Texas Review Press, I'd say the odds that we would consider awards given out by that press to be pretty close to nil. --Orange Mike | Talk 00:13, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Robert J Nagle. I agree with Orangemike. Creating Wikipedia articles about awards given by an organization that is not itself the subject of a Wikipedia article is like putting the cart before the horse, as the old saying goes. You are asking to fight an uphill battle against editors who will argue, with a certain degree of logic on their side, "How can awards given by a non-notable organization themselves be notable?" That will be a very tough battle to win. Cullen328 (talk) 05:08, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for all who replied. (By the way, I have no conflict of interest here). This is useful information. I will look into how the awarding body could qualify for notability. Robert J Nagle (talk) 18:54, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Apparently every single comment Wikipedia users write on a page outside the main namespace (it might be in the main namespace too, but I haven't tried it) now has a "[ reply ]" link following it. What triggers this? Is it added in every edit whatsoever, or does it require writing four tildes (~~~~) or linking to the user's own user page or user talk page? JIP | Talk 01:53, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@JIP: See WP:REPLYTOOL you can turn it off in preferences. It should only appear on talk pages. RudolfRed (talk) 01:56, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@JIP: To answer your 2nd question, it usually requires a signature to be added in order to appear. I think it's so the reply tool knows the difference between text and the end of a reply. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 02:00, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the information. It's not appearing only on talk pages, it's appearing on this very help desk here too. I don't know if it appears on the main namespace, but I haven't tried, as the main namespace is supposed to have article content only, as it's primarily intended for Wikipedia readers, not Wikipedia editors. JIP | Talk 02:02, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I worded that poorly. Its meant for any pages where there is discussion. Usually talk pages, but also the Help Desk, Ref Desks, Village Pump, etc. RudolfRed (talk) 02:04, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@JIP: It will appear on any forum-like page, so the Teahouse, HD, AIV, UAA, talk pages, etc. It won't appear in mainspace at all (I don't know if adding a signature into an article would cause it to appear but I haven't noticed it). ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 02:06, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello,

We're editing wikipedia page for our company Dream Games. When we try to upload our logo, the logo gets removed due to copyright issues. Can you please help us to upload the image? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ozge3535 (talkcontribs) 08:26, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Ozge3535 If you believe that Wikipedia will enhance your corporate reputation please think again. Wikipedia adds no value to you. You must add value to Wikipedia. Passing WP:CORP does that.
Please see also WP:PAID FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 08:50, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Ozge3535 In addition, if your logo is copyright then you need to licence it for onward use. Since you are a paid editor, by definition, it is incumbent on you to know all the rules. Those paid to edit here are paid to do the research properly.
We do not care what you want to say about your company. We only care what others have said about it. I suggest you get a decent web site FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 08:53, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I assume this is about c:File:Dream Games Logo.svg. Please see WP:UPIMAGE, our sister project Wikimedia Commons only accepts certain freely licensed media. From what I can see without having access to the deleted revisions there was a lack of evidence that the logo is licensed under any such license (No, the claim at upload time that it's someone's own work doesn't sufficie for previously published images). The image theoretically could be restored following a permission to VRT, which, if I interpret c:User talk:H5r2n correctly, also has to indicate which free license is designated (see c:Commons:Email templates/Consent for more about that process) however all license shemes that Wikimedia Commons accepts are deliberately broad, and it might not be what the Company wants. Alternatively, if getting the image on Wikimedia Commons restored is not an option for whatever reason, it might be possible to have the image uploaded locally, to the english Wikipedia, if it meets all of the non-free content criteria.
on an only marginally related note, I wouldn't worry about getting the company logo into the Wikipedia article for now. The more urgent problem with Dream Games is that it is considered for deletion (discussion page) as it doesn't appear to indicate why Dream Games is noteable as Wikipedia defines the term. Please see Wikipedia:So your article has been nominated for deletion. Victor Schmidt (talk) 09:47, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
• (edit conflict) Welcome to Wikipedia, Ozge3535. As you might have noticed by now, some people here have a dim view of paid-for editors. Others (such as myself) believe in guidance rather than prohibition, so here is what you should do next:
1. Make the paid-editing disclaimer as instructed at your user talk page. That is a condition from the terms of use.
2. (Optional) Go at Wikipedia:Articles_for_deletion/Dream_Games and put forward arguments why the article should be kept. That is a rather difficult job even for seasoned editors, so the only thing you should really do if you go that route is provide sources. Such sources should simultaneously (1) deal with the company in detail (so, a phonebook entry does not count), (2) come from usually-reliable outlets (most newspaper are OK, most blogs are not) and (3) are independent of the company (interviews with the CEO/spokesperson are not OK). If you want to make substantive arguments, read this long page first.
3. Decide whether you (Dream Games) are okay with licensing your logo under one of the permissible licenses on Wikipedia, mostly CC-BY-SA. You might want input from your legal/IP department for that. As a short summary, we do not accept "licensing for use on Wikipedia only" - a CC-BY-SA licensing means, for instance, that I can use your logo to promote my business selling potatoes or whatever.
4. Assuming the answer to the above is "no", read this guide. The summary is that you may upload a degraded version of the logo (raster graphics only, at a low resolution), if you upload it via Special:Upload (i.e. locally on en-Wikipedia, not on Commons), with appropriate tags, and use it on the company page.

Should access dates in templates be updated?

@Ghastlyman: Hi there! The access-date indicates when the link was viewed AND that the content of the web page supports the content in the Wikipedia article. Pipe trick in categories

I've seen on several pages (note the extra pipe in the category link). This looks like the pipe trick, but Help:Pipe trick doesn't mention anything about categories. What is the purpose of this syntax, versus just ? As far as I can tell they result in the same categorization and visible output. Ruбlov (talk) 23:53, 17 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I think using the pipe trick on categories might only do something if the category is made a link and not a category like this: :Category:Foo. ― Blaze WolfTalkBlaze Wolf#6545 00:13, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Rublov and Blaze Wolf: Hi there! Using the pipe on a category controls how the pages are sorted on the category page. For example, the article Batman contains - this causes the Batman article to be the first article listed on Category:Batman (and not sorted alphabetically in the "B" section). See WP:SORTKEY for more information. GoingBatty (talk) 00:47, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Ghastlyman I'd rewrite per source, especially if WP:DOB (living person) applies. Depending on what the source says, there are templates like , in this example the source from 12 November 2013 said the person was 52 at that date, it turns into 1960 or 1961 (age 62–63). I am blind and I also do not understand how to format my citations. HELP PLEASE!

My father was Edward Joseph Lakso (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_J._Lakso). I noticed that there are several errors on his page, including the name he was born with (which was a different surname!) I have all sorts of documentation of proof for these things BUT I have recently gone mostly blind AND there isn't a chance on this earth that I will EVER understand your instructions about how to present the citations ANYWAY. Really. I just can't do it. I tried and tried and failed miserably. I really cannot understand it. I bow my head to anyone who is able to do this obscure thing. Is there ANY chance that someone could help me?

For example:

The page says he was born Edward Joseph Lakso, but that is not correct.

His name at birth was Edward Joseph Shea (III) but his mother and father broke up soon after he was born. Ed's step father married his mother shortly after that (21 Nov., 1936.) (I have no record of either the marriage or the divorce of Ed's bio-parents, so it is possible they weren't married, but the marriage record of Ed's mother to her second husband (LAKSO) has her using her first husband's surname (SHEA) so they WERE likely married and I just did not find the documents.)

I have at least two documents for these facts: My father's birth record that gives his name EDWARD JOSEPH SHEA and the marriage record for Ed's mother and her second husband Vaino Wayne Jalo Lakso

Basically you are saying that you are finding it challenging to edit because of personal reasons. While I sympathize with your condition, it is possible that the problem may not be about presentation, which could be easily fixed, but about the very reliability of your sources. Your attempts were probably rejected for the sources you provided were unverifiable or unreliable.-- Abdul Muhsy talk 12:38, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
We have specific places where we deem them to be unreliable. Church records and ancestry.com aren't really places we trust. I wouldn't worry about style or layout, but rather can we trust where the info is coming from. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 12:43, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Should mandate their presentation in the wikitext?

Hi all, I was hoping if someone could comment on whether edits like this are helpful. In the article from the diff linked, most dates are in the mdy (February 14, 2022) format, but there does exist a few in the dmy (14 February 2022) format. I understand that adding Use mdy dates would present this to the user in the correct way. Meaning such edits would not make any difference to the overall presentation of the article. But still, it okay to change dates from one format to another?

I feel like this would make sense in cases where an article consists of dates formatted mainly in the date style used. In such cases, you're helping the article be consistent with its date formatting. But in cases where another style is predominantly used (ie. 2022-02-14), such edits would not need to be made. (I suppose 2022-02-14 is a special exception, since a lot of articles seem to have mdy/dmy being used but format dates like that).

So, to re-iterate my question, is it okay to change date formats in wikitext to the date format being used in the article in cases where the article already predominantly uses the said date style in the wikitext? Satricious (talk) 10:38, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The dates in the edit that you are complaining about were all inside cs1|2 citation templates. Those templates read the use xxx dates template and apply the dictated style to the rendered citation. Because cs1|2 automatically renders dates in accordance with use xxx dates, there is no real need to have scripts running around changing dates in cs1|2 templates. If all that is accomplished by the script is a change to cs1|2 template date parameters then that amounts to a violation of WP:COSMETICBOT so the script should abandon the edit.
There is already a freely-available date-fixing-script (User:Ohconfucius/script/MOSNUM_dates.js). I suspect that it is also guilty of WP:COSMETICBOT, so I suppose that you can continue to use your script but I gotta wonder if we really need two scripts...

Oh cool, thanks for the pointers! Yeah I'm abandoning my user script (for the most part). Shortly after I wrote it I suspected it would not be of much use so I came here to check whether such edits would be acceptable and whether something else already exists. I did not know about WP:COSMETICBOT and am glad I know about it now. I'll probably only use my own user script in very rare cases in which I'm already updating an article which I contribute to that happens to strictly format their dates according to the date style used (ie. 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine has all their dates formatted in the wikitext; I could then use my user script to aid me in changing any odd dates (for consistency's sake) while doing my own 'substantive' edits) Satricious (talk) 12:29, 18 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
