Someone saying they edit one of my client's page

Someone who says they are in charge of editing one of my clients page has reached out to her personally through Instagram. He is asking for photos and information on her to add to the page, birthday date etc. I think this is odd that someone would reach out directly. I think his name is John Mateer. I think this is wrong but wanted to reach out to you to find out what your rules are about editors contacting the subject of which they are supposedly covering. (A) Nobody is "in charge" of any article on Wikipedia: you might like to read the Policy page WP:OWN, which will make clear why such a "someone" would likely be lying.

(B) All content in all Wikipedia articles must be verifiable by citing information to published sources, preferably Reliable ones that are independent of the subject of the article, though trivial facts (such as the current CEO of an organisation) can be cited to non-independent sources (like that organisation's website). This means that if personal facts about a subject are published, there is no need to approach the subject for them, and if they are not, they are not eligible for inclusion even if the subject personally provides them.

• For an editor to reach out to the subject of an article is unusual, but not forbidden; I've done that maybe three times in 15 years of editing. If they say they're "in charge" of the client's page, that's wrong, no-one here is in charge of any article. Maybe they said something like "I'm revising and improving Wikipedia's article about you ...", and this was misinterpreted by your client.
• Another possibility is that this person hopes to charge your client money in return for changes in the article. Wikipedia strongly disapproves of such "paid editors". Many are dishonest, or even outright scammers; many are incompetent. They operate in many different ways.
• A third possibility is that this is someone who wants to open a personal conversation with your client, because they're a fan, or a stalker; and they just happen to be a Wikipedia editor. Maproom (talk) 09:17, 30 November 2022 (UTC)

Citation help

Hi Folks!!, is there any way to differentiate between short sfn citations that have the same year. For example

• {{sfn|Lister|1858}} For the "On the Cutaneous Pigmentary System of the Frog" paper
• {{sfn|Lister|1858}} For the "On the early stages of inflammation" paper.

Reusing a reference in an article when the first use is in an infobox

I just edited Cobalt to cite the OED (after "so named because they were poor in known metals, and gave poisonous arsenic-containing fumes when smelted"). Now this is reference 4. It's the same as reference 1, so this is less than ideal. The proper thing to do is to give reference 1 a name, and say <ref name=whatever /> when using it the second time.

However, the first reference is buried in an infobox! It comes from Template:Infobox_element/symbol-to-pronunciation, where Template:Cite_OED2 is used. What should I do? I can't figure out whether it's automatically generated a name for the reference. In theory it might be named Reference-OED2-cobalt, but I tried <ref name=Reference-OED2-cobalt /> and that didn't work in previews.  Card Zero  (talk) 11:49, 30 November 2022 (UTC)

@Card Zero: There are no ref names in Template:Infobox element/symbol-to-pronunciation. It just says <ref>{{cite OED2|cobalt}}</ref>. It could be edited to add a ref name but the reference might change later. I suggest you just keep it duplicated. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:51, 30 November 2022 (UTC)

Communicating with an IPv6 anon

I've asked on WP:ANI for guidance about this here with followup here about an anon using IPv6 addresses, frequently randomized in the lower 64, to make a series (85 to date throughout November) of edits that aren't vandalism, exactly, but amount to "tinkering" with no new content, while introducing minor grammar errors, removing link markup, etc etc. Almost all of them have been reverted (mostly by me; yes, I'm technically stalking) but I'm not even sure they amount to requiring a rangeblock. The problem, which can't be new, is that it's futile to put warnings or other help/chat on their talk page because of the address randomization, so I can't meet the AIV criteria anyway. I tried putting a message on my page but to no avail. Surely this issue of communication with what is clearly the same person (2804:D4B:A387:E400::/64) has come up before. What to do? You are able to just move it to main space if you'd prefer not to wait for review from AFC. That said, I've made some changes to it; and I'm concerned about some instances of Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing that I found. Wikipedia is not a directory. You don't get to just add a person or a company or a club to Wikipedia. @Matr1x-101:I think it's only available to sysops. When I look at the image description page here on enwiki, I see (in small text) "View or undelete 5 deleted edits? (view logs for this page | view filter log)" at the very top of the page. You would not see that. I would expect a non-sysop to see a link to the deletion log (can someone who is not an admin confirm that they see a link to the deletion log?) The deletion log only includes the deletion however, not the page creation. @ONUnicorn for filenames which exist on Commons non-admins don't see any of that on the description page itself (however, some skins have a link to the page logs in the tools navbar). Question on paid editing.

What if I want to pay someone to edit Wikipedia articles but not in a way related to me or a company or something like that but rather in a philantropic way ? The page has been moved to draft as noted above; if you cannot see it, go via your contributions (link at top right) where you should see it listed as *Draft: (title)*. That is the preferred place to create a new item. When it is completed and you have complied with all the necessary requirements, it can be submitted for review. After passing that stage it is still subject to new page patrol and will not be indexed by search engines for 90 days or patrol has been completed, whichever comes first. Note that Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. You should probably remove all the citations to press releases (such as the Cointelegraph piece and the Bloomberg one) as well as to LinkedIn, and remove from the draft any information which is not cited to an independent source. Editing references in source mode

The references are not normally in the Reference list in source mode, but are embedded in the text where they are cited. If you want to edit a reference, pick the caret by it to go to the place in the text where it is used, and edit that section. ColinFine (talk) 16:30, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

I would really appreciate it if the ICDL profile https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/European_Computer_Driving_Licence could be updated. The company has changed a great deal and the logo is very old, and also there are also a number of incorrect claims as the references included go back 20 years. In my opinion, (Professor) Charles Fugo, University of South Carolina, should be on this list.

Bibliography

There's an article lacking many citations in many sentences but the article has a Bibliography section. Does this mean the sentences are still unsourced? Dr Salvus 20:03, 1 December 2022 (UTC)

There is not anything wrong with general references. Wikipedia:Featured_article_criteria says that inline citations are required where appropriate. You can discuss it on the article's talk page if you think there are citations missing. Also, articles change over time. It is possible that the article once met FA criteria but does not now. UiawsbdNicoDude, I would recommend using one of WP:REDWARN, WP:TWINKLE, or WP:HUGGLE. They make it much quicker to revert vandalism and warn users. I use Twinkle. Circular Redirect?

A user added a hatnote to the FOSTA-SESTA article, saying "SESTA" redirects here. For the ancient episcopal see, see Diocese of Sesta. But Diocese of Sesta is itself a redirect to Mauretania_Caesariensis#Episcopal_sees and the Sesta entry on that bullet-list links to Diocese of Sesta.

I'm not well versed in redirects, so maybe the circular nature of all that information isn't really important to Wikipedia functionality. But I wanted to ask about it, since it was so self-looping. CleverTitania (talk) 04:07, 2 December 2022 (UTC)

Filing copyright complaints for use without attribution

An individual is using Wikipedia articles without attribution for entire YouTube videos. I wrote most of the material in two of the articles used Big Boy Restaurants and Bob's Big Boy, as well as created graphics also used without attribution. He is attributing the videos only to himself. The videos are just the articles run through a text to speech generator. I'm ready to file YouTube copyright strikes and want to know how to coordinate with Wikipedia, without delay. As usual, Wikipedia help pages are belabored and confusing. How do I proceed? Hi Box73. Unfortunately, I don't think there's really anything to coordinate when it comes to something like this. The copyright over content added to Wikipedia isn't held by the Wikimedia Foundation, except in cases where the content was originally added by the WMF itself as explained in WP:COPY. Individual users such as yourself are going to need to try and enforce your copyright on your own as explained in Wikipedia:Mirrors and forks. You can try emailing or otherwise contacting the WMF about this, but my guess is that it will just respond pretty much the same way. @Patlor643 Foreign-language sources are OK if there are no equivalent English ones. The guidance is at WP:RSUE. I suspect that many of the ones you have listed here are based on interviews, so are not WP:INDEPENDENT. In getting drafts accepted, we look for quality, not quantity, so you only need about WP:THREE decent sources that possess all of the attributes mentioned by Cullen328. Incidentally, given that Patrese is Italian, I would have expected there to be an article about him in the Italian-language version of Wikipedia but I don;t see one there. Section-wise footnotes

Country codes: J–K has overall four footnotes for #North Korea, #South Korea and #Kosovo, collected on the bottom of the page. It would be better to have any footnote in the section of each country. This could be achieved by assigning the footnotes of each country to a distinct group and then list that group in the same section. The problem is that the group name will appear in the place of the note and should not be too long and outlandish. "note North Korea", "note South Korea", "note Kosovo" won't really do. Best would be to call it "note" in all places, but it should apply only to the same section. You said you have newspaper articles that back up your assertions. In order to cite a newspaper article, you should provide the following information about the article: Name of author, date of publication, title of article, name of newspaper. That allows other people to look up the article and verify that it says what Wikipedia says it says. If you have read a book by Roy Nesbit, and you want to use it to cite information in a Wikipedia article, you would provide the following information: Name of author (Roy Nesbit in this example), Title of book, page(s) being referenced.

So, if you find an error in a Wikipedia article (say, it says something took place in Ewelme when it actually took place in Elwell), you would click on the button that says "talk" at the top of the article you were reading, then you would say on the the talk page something to the effect of "According to Roy Nesbit, in (Name of book), page 83, the name of the town is Elwell, not Ewelme. Can someone help me fix it please?" Possible incorrect way to replace an image

@Komorijuno: You were trying to move the article to "mainspace", but you instead moved it to "project space". All namespaces except mainspace are indicated by a prefix word with a colon. The names of articles in Mainspace (i.e., where the actual Wikipedia articles live) do not have a namespace prefix at all. Therefore, you should have moved your article to Dogelon Mars instead of Wikipedia:Dogelon Mars. HOWEVER: you are lucky you made the mistake, because the article is not yet ready for mainspace and it would have been deleted. If you have no account, Wikipedia has no way to know that the person sitting at your computer/holding your device on your IP address has seen a donation request or actually donated; there is no way to connect donation records to IP addresses(or even accounts). I am wondering if there is anyone else that is getting HTTP 400 error while trying to submit changes to articles. I have tried numerous times to submit my edit on one of the articles on Serbian Wikipedia and it has not worked. I've tried both Mozzila and Edge and same error.

I'm afraid that it's unlikely that anybody here can help you. The Serbian Wikipedia and the English Wikipedia are entirely separate projects. They're probably hosted on the same servers, but that's in the domain of Mediawiki, not the individual Wikipedias. I've just been onto sr:Главна_страна with no problem.
