The Jat people (Hindi: [जाट Jāṭ] Error: {{Lang}}: text has italic markup (help), Punjabi: [ਜੱਟ Jaṭṭ] Error: {{Lang}}: text has italic markup (help)) are a historical Indo-Aryan tribal group native to the Punjab region. They are also mostly found in Haryana, Rajasthan and North India. There's an old saying about Jats that "If a Jat runs wild, it takes God to hold him back" and it was famously quoted by Herbert Risley.[1] The Jats hold a place amongst the 36 royal races of India.[2][3][4] The following is a list of notable Jats.
Jat rulers
- Maharaja Suraj Mal of Bharatpur in Rajasthan in India. He has been described by a contemporary historian as "the Plato of the Jat people" and by a modern writer as the "Jat Ulysses" [5]
- Maharaja Ranjit Singh, Maharaja of Punjab (Sandhawalia Jat family) known as Sher-e-Punjab (The Lion of the Punjab).[6][7]
- Maharaja Bhupinder Singh was the ruling Maharaja of the princely state of Patiala from 1900 to 1938.[7][8]
