Rio Branco (Portuguese pronunciation: [ˈʁiu ˈbɾɐ̃ku], White River) is a Brazilian city, capital of Acre. Located in the Valley of Acre in northern Brazil, it is the most populous county in the state, with 305,954 inhabitants, according to a 2009 estimate - almost half the state population.
Rio Branco was also one of the first settlements to appear on the banks of the Acre River. In 1913, It became a county. In 1920, it became the capital of the territory of Acre, and in 1962, the state capital.
It is the administrative center, economic and cultural region.
Geography
Rio Branco is located at 9 ° 58'29 "south and 67 ° 48'36" West, at an altitude of 153 meters above sea level. The city is bisected by the Acre River, which divides the city into two parts called the First and Second Districts. Currently, the river is crossed by six bridges - the newest bridge being the Catwalk Joaquim Macedo.
The municipality is located in the microregion of Rio Branco, Acre mesoregion Valley. Confined to the north with the municipalities of Bukhari and Porto Acre and Amazonas, to the south with the municipalities and Xapuri Capixaba in the east with the municipality of Senador Guiomar and west with the municipality of Sena Madureira.
Climate
The city of Rio Branco has the lowest average annual temperature among the Northern capitals. The climate is equatorial with temperatures between 25 °C and 38 °C during the hottest days of the year. Situated 153 meters above sea level, the lowest temperatures occur at night, with frequent records of 22 °C at dawn. The period between the months of December and March corresponds to the hottest time of year [6], with highs of 38 °C or more. Usually between May and August the Branco region experiences rather chilly weather, registering very low temperatures (around 15 °C) compared to regional standards. [6] In July 2010, the city of Rio Branco experienced record low temperatures. On the afternoon of the 17, Temperatures were registered to be 14.7 °C on average and a minimum of 12.1 °C. 19 days of the month stood out with a minimum at 9.8 °C. However, the month's maximum reached 28 °C.[1]
Vegetation
The Amazon represents over half of the planet's remaining rainforests and comprises the largest and most species-rich tract of tropical rainforest in the world. Wet tropical forests are the most species-rich biome, and tropical forests in the Americas are consistently more species rich than the wet forests in Africa and Asia.[2] As the largest tract of tropical rainforest in the World, the Amazonian rainforests have unparalleled biodiversity. More than 1/3 of all species in the world live in the Amazon Rainforest.[3]

Airport
Rio Branco-Plácido de Castro International Airport is 18 km in the BR-364 in the rural area. This new airport was officially opened on November 22, 1999, when the older facility, Presidente Médici International Airport was closed due to its short distance to the urban center and a legal dispute concerning the land where it was located.
The BR-364 then been duplicated to facilitate their access to today is complicated by the enormous distance from the center of city.

The main routes linking the city to highways are New Avenida Ceará, Via and Via Chico Mendes Green serving as ring road.
BR-364 - Along with the BR-317 is the main road from Acre. To the east connects the state of Rio Branco Rondônia and the rest of the country. The cuts west across the state, linking the state capital of Southern Cross, the second main city of the state, through the municipalities of Sena Madureira, Manoel Urbano, Feijó, Tarauacá and Rodrigues Alves (Acre). BR-317 - has length of 330 km, linking the capital to the south of the state, through the municipalities of Guiomard Senator Capixaba Acre Epitaciolândia, Brazil on the border with Republic of Bolivia, from Brasília the road continues for another 110 km to reach the city of Assis Brazil on the border with Peru. The highway will become an important route for export of Brazil, because when the road on the Peruvian side is completed (approximately three years), Brazil will be fully connected to Cuzco and the two main ports of the neighboring country
Attractions
Palácio Rio Branco
One of the most famous Palaces of Rio Branco was built in 1930 for the seat of the state government. In 1999, a restoration process of the property began with respect to its historical character and its undeniably valued political architecture. In 2008, it was transformed into a museum of history, exposing important facts about the history of the city and state since its inception.

Square Plácido de Castro
Also known as the Square of the Revolution, it is located in the heart of the city, opposite the headquarters of the Military Police of Acre. It underwent a recent reconstruction.
Memorial Autonomists
It has a museum on the acquisitions of Acre by the Brazil, exhibition of paintings by regional artists, a coffee and drama theatre. The Memorial provides the public a large collection of historic photos of the state, as well as historical objects used during the Revolution Acre.
Catwalk Joaquim Macedo
A catwalk for pedestrians linking the two districts of the city. Passing over the Acre River, the catwalk was built with cable suspension and completed in 2006. Museum of rubber The museum includes parts of Archeology, Paleontology, and a historical collection of manuscripts and documents relating to the history of Acre.
Old Market
Located on the left bank of the Acre River, it was built in 1920's, one of the major buildings at the time. Recently refurbished, it revamped the area's historic presence.
Maternity Park
Opened on September 28 of 2002, it is the work of higher expression in the city of Rio Branco. With an extension of 6,000 m, it cuts into much of the city. It has sports facilities, kiosks, restaurants, biking trails, and skate parks. A place for the practice of sports.
Shopping centers
Rio Branco has two shopping malls; the Mira Shopping and a smaller Via Verde Shopping, which is currently undergoing construction and is projected to be completed sometime in 2011.
Demographics
The population of the county in 2009 was estimated at 305,954 inhabitants by the IBGE, the largest city in the state and 81 of Brazil's most populous, with a population density of 33.17 inhabitants per km². According to the 2000 census, 51% of the population are male and 48.2% women and 92.73% of the population lives in urban areas and 7.22% live in rural areas. According to the Atlas of Human Development in Brazil, the population of Rio Branco is equivalent to 0.16% of the national population. According to the Superior Electoral Court, Rio Branco had 201,966 voters in 2008 .
The Municipal Human Development Index (HDI) of Rio Branco is considered average by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), with its value of 0.754. Considering only the value of the education index is 0.860, while Brazil's is 0.849, the rate of longevity is 0.697 (the Brazilian is 0.638) and income is 0.704 (Brazil's is 0.723). Rio White has the most average indicators according to the UNDP. The Gini coefficient, which measures inequality, is 0.52, and 1.00 is the worst number and 0.00 is the best. The incidence of poverty, measured by the IBGE is 37, 21% and the incidence of subjective poverty is 39.39%. Rio Branco has all its indicators improved in recent years, leaving a worrying picture for an established quality of life.
Education
The city of Rio Branco in 2009, had in elementary school with 211 schools, with faculty and 64,349 students enrolled 2.367 teachers. The Index of Basic Education Development in elementary school was constructed in 4.9, the 10th between the capitals of Brazil, and above the national average (4.6). [16] The school was attended by 51 schools, a network of 813 teaching faculty and 17,425 enrollments. The school achieved the municipal IDEB 4.2 in 2009, the third best result of the capital, above the national average (3.6). The estimated 70 kindergarten pre-schools, 402 teachers and 10,168 students.
The capital account also has several higher education institutions. These efforts included the Federal University of Acre (UFAC), Northern Educational Union (UNINORTE), College of the Western Amazonia (FAAO), the Community College of Acre, among others. These absorb the bulk of registrations, especially the former, as the only public college in the state.
In 2008, the illiteracy rate in the state is 13%, one of the most balanced of Brazil. Population, 36.2% of Acre are functionally illiterate.

Rio Branco was one of the 18 shortlisted candidates to host games of the 2014 FIFA World Cup, for which Brazil is the only South American bidder. Ultimately, the city's bid was rejected and it could not make it to the final 12 cities.
