== Just a thanks! ==

As a Wilpo/Salladasburg native who's been displaced to Phoenix, AZ and very much misses his creeks and woods and wildlife, thanks! I came across a photo of yours (Cohick's and the church) tonight when someone got me yakkin' about I-99, and then I found your userpage with some beautiful photos of my home. And with a damn good license, too! You just made my day.

Apologies if this isn't the proper place.

I miss the "Orange Bar of Death" notifying me when I had a new talk page message.

Welcome to my talk page. Please leave me a message below and I will generally reply on your talk page. Although my email address is enabled, I do not check often (so I may be slow in replying to email and very much prefer to have conversations here). Please note that while I will do a peer review on just about any article if asked, it will often take me several days or a week or more, and I do not have the time to do copyedits. If you want me to review an article, please open a peer review on it first. Thanks for stopping by and happy editing! Ruhrfisch ><>°° 23:53, 28 February 2013 (UTC)

RFC-withdrawal closure

Could you close my RFC at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Disambiguation#2nd order disambiguation by birth date - RFC. I seem to have defined the wrong scope of the issue and posted it at the wrong page, according to the feedback I am getting. I would like to withdraw my RFC nomination.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 05:08, 6 March 2013 (UTC)

How to Create a Mind

Thanks for reviewing How to Create a Mind, I appreciate the time and effort. I liked all of your suggestions. Amazing how you think it looks pretty good, but there is so much more valid stuff to improve. I implemented a bunch of your smaller suggestions already, but I will have to digest and work on the bigger issues over time.

One bit of philosophy, is GA or FA rating coupled to the subject at all. For instance I wonder if this book just isn't important enough or impactful enough to be GA/FA. Now I figure in theory those ratings are probably only supposed to be about the article, not a judgement on the subject. But in practice it seems impossible to decouple the two entirely, it seems like some subjects support being brought up to GA/FA a lot better than others. Just wondering. Translation request

Do you still have any time for translations? I've just discovered de:Wagen von Compiègne and think that it would be good in English; it seems to provide lots of content that's not in Glade of the Armistice or Forest of Compiègne. Nyttend (talk) 14:19, 14 March 2013 (UTC)

DYK Hook approval

You may consider this nomination to be a minefield and I would understand that, but Template:Did you know nominations/The Racketeer (novel) is now the second oldest DYK nomination. The reason it has become a minefield is that I have made accusations that at DYK in general they have attempted to keep the most popular African-Americans that I have nominated from appearing on the main page. They even wiped out a whole class of articles through AFD, including Barack Obama on Twitter and Rihanna on Twitter to keep Obama and potentially Rihanna from being on the main page although the class of pages were non-issues when Lady Gaga on Twitter and Justin Bieber on Twitter went through DYK. Now, there is what seems to me to be non-sensical guidance towards a Denzel Washington-free hook. There are several recently proposed Washington hooks. I would prefer that one of them (ALT6-ALT8) be approved. It seems to me if you created the most mundane Washington/Grisham hook possible (E.g. This article mentions Denzel Washington and John Grisham) and ran it in the 8:00-16:00 Saturday morning slot, it would probably do over 3000 hits. Any substantive hook in a normal timeslot should get 5K hits or more. I don't think any of the claimed "interesting" non-Denzel hooks will do much more than 2000 hits (given my prior grisham DYK experience [1], [2]). However, given my experience with celebrity hooks shows quite a bit more success Kate Upton [3], Beyoncé Knowles [4], Demi Moore [5] [6], Jessica Alba [7] and Oprah Winfrey [8]. Thus, I am asking if you will consider approving a celebrity hook if you don't think the issue to be to political for you.--TonyTheTiger (T/C/BIO/WP:CHICAGO/WP:FOUR) 04:24, 6 April 2013 (UTC)

A very nice FL attempt

Hey there- Take a look here. Someone has really improved the list and is in need of a person who could provide guidance in FL lists and/or their way, if you will. Its a brave attempt about localities in the NetherlandsCoal town guy (talk) 16:56, 25 April 2013 (UTC)

Hello there! I was wondering if another protection may be in order for the Kent, Ohio article. It's had a few already and it's the same thing every few months. An anonymous editor keeps adding a website that was specifically mentioned in the FAC process as not meeting WP:EL (website is www.kentohio.net, which the editor refers to as the "Kent Community Directory"). It's not a "banned" site or anything, just not one that meets the criteria. All attempts to explain WP:EL have gone unanswered and if you look at the article history, this has happened dozens of times already (3 times today). Any help/advice you could give would be appreciated. Thanks! --JonRidinger (talk) 20:55, 1 May 2013 (UTC)

Please let me know if this message elicits the ersatz orange bar that I have failed to conjure up on my own talk and am desperate to see restored. Brianboulton (talk) 14:45, 6 May 2013 (UTC)
Well, I have bypassed my cache per instructions. My IP servant has sent two test messages, no orange bars. So I'm doing something wrong, but whatever it is I have no idea. But it's nice to be talking to you again. Brianboulton (talk) 18:50, 6 May 2013 (UTC)

I have recently uploaded File:JaneJoseph.jpg from a scanned photograph. The image is rather grainy, even in the thumbnail version posted to the article. Can it be improved by any simple measures? (I hope this message earns you an OBOD!) Brianboulton (talk) 20:25, 9 May 2013 (UTC)

Your revised image will do fine, so my original upload can be deleted. Many thanks for your help. The Joseph article will probably be at peer review next week; I know you're not reviewing much these days, but if you feel like looking it over (if only as far as the images go) I'd be very grateful. Advice requested

My current editing project is Harold Davidson, the transcendent "naughty vicar" of the 1930s (I've really enjoyed working on this). I have uploaded a non-free image of Davidson for the lead. However, there is another non-free image that I would dearly like to upload and use. It is here; the photograph is used as the cover image in Tom Cullen's biography of Davidson, and was a critical factor in Davidson's conviction at his trial for immorality. In your view, could the use of this image be covered by a fair use rationale, either instead of or in addition to the existing non-free image? Brianboulton (talk) 09:20, 18 June 2013 (UTC)

Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania

Could you make a map of Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania pre-consolidation (see File:Philadelphia pre 1854 consolidation.jpg). The current map (File:Map of Philadelphia County Pennsylvania With Municipal and Township Labels.png) doesn't show any municipalities, as they were abolished in 1854. Emmette Hernandez Coleman (talk) 03:48, 19 June 2013 (UTC)

Well it shows all of the current municipalities ;-). The map would be a lot of work - what article(s) are you planning on using it in? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 11:12, 19 June 2013 (UTC)

Just to let you know, I have opened the peer review – with both the non-free images in place. Could you look and see if you think the rationales are strong enough? Any other comment would of course be a bonus. Brianboulton (talk) 14:55, 20 June 2013 (UTC)

Good morning, Ruhrfisch. I wonder if I can trouble you to look at File:Benjamin Britten-Karsh.jpg. It's the main image in the article on Britten, which I hope to take to FAC in the next couple of months, and if (as I suspect) its PD credentials are dubious I'd like to be rid of it in good time to upload a justifiable fair use image instead. Tim riley (talk) 12:18, 21 June 2013 (UTC)

Thank you very much. No rush whatever. Grateful for your views in the fullness of time. – Tim riley (talk) 15:13, 21 June 2013 (UTC)
Truly sorry to put you to so much trouble, and most grateful for your efforts. I repeat: no rush. With warmest thanks, Tim riley (talk) 21:14, 25 June 2013 (UTC)
I have added my warm thanks on the Britten talk page, and at the risk of duplication I do so here too. I am very much in your debt. Do you think the doubt about the status of the Karsh image should be flagged up at its Commons page, by the way? I can't imagine how I could do you a reciprocal service in the future, but if I can I shall be very pleased to do so. Tim riley (talk) 15:34, 27 June 2013 (UTC)
I think the Hans Wild image is miles better than the Karsh one. Repeated thanks! At your service for peer reviewing at any time. Tim riley (talk) 22:34, 27 June 2013 (UTC)

How good it is to see one of the old bridge articles (from 2009) on the main page today. This is the one for which, in my enthusiasm, I managed to register support twice at the FAC! A nice nostalgic experience. Brianboulton (talk) 12:13, 22 June 2013 (UTC)

PennDOT bridges

Can you remind me how to determine which bridge photos are PD? I'm talking about the PD release you got from PennDOT for images such as File:Bridge in Cherrytree Township.jpg; I can't remember if it's all images related to the "Highway Bridges Owned by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, Department of Transportation TR", or if it's just some of them, or if it's something else entirely. Someone's observed the destruction of Frantz's Bridge, and I'd like to add a PennDOT photo, but (1) I can't remember if its photos of the site can be used, (2) I can't get onto CRGIS to look at most of the photos [the server won't let me on, due to some sort of weird technical errors], and (3) the only photo I can find is the one attached to its nomination form. Nyttend (talk) 18:44, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

Thanks, but now I'm confused — why do you think that the TR doesn't include Frantz's? It was listed in 1988 (six years after the TR went through), but NRIS puts it as part of the TR, and its nomination was prepared by a PennDOT guy in 1982, using the same setup as bridges that are definitely part of the TR. Nyttend (talk) 17:43, 1 July 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the upload, and no problems; it's been long enough since I did much with the PA listings that I figured I'd forgotten or overlooked something significant. And thanks for the Kooser compliment; my brother was married in Somerset a week and a half ago, so I took a few spare minutes to get a few quick pictures. Perhaps you saw that I added an already-online photo from the Laurel Hill RDA; I visited there myself as well, but it was extremely foggy and thus very difficult to get more than one building in any picture. Nyttend (talk) 16:41, 2 July 2013 (UTC)
The picture I put on the Somerset County NR list was File:LHSP CCC Cabin.jpg, which had already been in the Laurel Hill SP infobox. I've not uploaded any images that I took there. Nyttend (talk) 17:07, 4 July 2013 (UTC)

You kindly mentioned on my talk that you would review the images at FAC. I've just nominated the article; I think the images are much as they were at the peer review, but a further review (and any general comments) would be much appreciated. Brianboulton (talk) 19:22, 30 June 2013 (UTC)

Scott

Re the last sentence of the lead, you are absolutely right that "stoicism" is a perfectly appropriate term to use in connection with evaluations of Scott. I do however think "but" is not the best conjunction in that sentence, and that "and" would be better: . . . emphasising his personal bravery and stoicism while acknowledging his errors, and ascribing his expedition's fate primarily to misfortune. Feel free to accept or ignore as you see fit. Awien (talk) 12:03, 10 July 2013 (UTC)

I have recently uploaded this image from another website. As it stands, it is too long for the article it is meant for: The Diary of a Nobody. Unfortunately, I don't seem to be able to crop it, after several unsuccessful attempts, though it's a procedure I've not had problems with before. Perhaps the software has changed – I don't know. I want it to be cropped to the point just below where the lady's hands meet; would it be possible for you to do this? I would very much appreciate it.

About the disambig links—despite your encouragement, and my agreement that it might seem reasonable for me to add the piped links, I truly avoid any direct edits, on account of Jimbo's stated position that editors with a financial COI never directly edit articles.
If that doesn't seem too silly, both of the links that need fixing are found in references in the Development section. As currently numbered, these are references 10 and 20. You can find them that way, or Ctrl-F for the existing wikilinks; here are the piped replacements:

Disputes between two great men - is it worth disturbing their peace?

One thing that comes to my mind when thinking of those two lads - would they want us to spend (or waste) our time musing about their individual AND joint misfortunes - blaming the one or the other and condemning either or would they prefer us to do something more constructive and PEACEFUL than leading a war that has been battled for too ling. Wouldn't both probably would despise this behaviour? Wouldn't they prefer people not being divided but rather be UNITED...--Commissioner Gordon (talk) 19:49, 4 August 2013 (UTC)

I have absolutely no idea which two great men you are talking about - I assume you mean Scott and Oates? I know I am not great, so it can't be me ;-) I am trying to follow Wikipedia's policies and guidelines and protect the adherence of an FA article to WP:WIAFA. What is it specifically that we should do to be "united"? Ruhrfisch ><>°° 19:54, 4 August 2013 (UTC)
I mean Scottleton and Shack. Don't you know those two from the parallel dimensions? They are new crossings between Robert and Ernest.
Principally, I think all people are great. I like to quote my man Mimo, who once said "I like everyone". Or was it "I like anyone". English is deaficult lankuage and olso verry errrm-bitchious. arrrh, forgot signink of postink :-( --Commissioner Gordon (talk) 20:03, 4 August 2013 (UTC)
I seriously doubt either man knows or cares what we do here, but if they did I hope that they would want their articles to be as accurate and neutral as possible.
I think it is faster for me to write in English and you in German. I am not Jamiri (who I believe you said earlier is the editor on the German Wikipedia you were in a disagreement with, who banned you there). If you want to make your own web page and write up your opinions on Scott and Shackleton and Amundsen and whoever else, then feel free to do so and do it however you want. But, if you want to edit on Wikipedia (whether German or English), then you have to follow the Wikipedia rules, which you are not doing and apparently have no intention of doing. Articles must maintain a Neutral Point of View and represent all major views on a subject as expressed in reliable sources. Actions have consequences here on Wikipedia and in the real world. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:38, 4 August 2013 (UTC)

Details on the Terra-Nova Ponies

I've added (EXTREMELY VALUABLE AND IMPORTANT;-) information about the character of some of the Terra Nova Ponies in the Terra Nova article. Just to circumvent someone claiming he has not been informed about an edit from me ;-) --Commissioner Gordon (talk) 19:55, 4 August 2013 (UTC)

You helped me a short while back with the crop of the Daisy Mutlar image (above). I've now nominated the article at FAC (despite the logjam there). If you could see your way to doing a general image review I'd be most grateful. I don't think there are any hidden problems there, but one never knows. Brianboulton (talk) 19:30, 7 August 2013 (UTC)

The article is doing pretty well at FAC, and I think the image view has been done. But if you could see your way to doing a sources review instead, thatb would be very much appreciated. Brianboulton (talk) 22:51, 11 August 2013 (UTC)

Elegies

You mentioned about the Duino Elegies that the infobox should mention that the source is in German. I felt the same, we are working on it ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 10:36, 8 August 2013 (UTC)

Wikisource original language was just made available, and the article the first where I used it! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 17:07, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
Thank you Gerda. I am not sure the original German publisher needs to be in the Infobox of an English article, but at least the Wikisource link is clearer now. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 18:56, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
The publisher doesn't "need to be", and I would not suggest a publisher without an article, - but it doesn't take extra space and helps those who know. A first publisher in English might be added if known. - It was a very fast approach, intentionally kept simple. Did you see the conversation? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:18, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
ps: sorry, when I said "no extra space", I confused the template with {{infobox musical composition}}, for example Symphony No. 8 (Bruckner), where year and publisher go together, - I just found out that the infobox there dates back to 2007, couldn't believe it ;) --Gerda Arendt (talk) 21:50, 8 August 2013 (UTC)
Thanks for the update. I did not carefully read the article's talk page - just saw mention of it on Arbcom pages and mostly looked at the article briefly. It seems to me that if the publisher is not important enough to be in the lead, then it does not need to be in the Infobox (especially when I would imagine the current work has several publishers in several languages). Note this is NOT my asking that the publisher be added to the lead to justify its inclusion in the infobox - no one thought it belonged there through a successful FAC and TFA, so leave it out of the lead. And, if it is not in the lead, my thought is it need not be in the Infobox (if consensus is to include one at all ;-) ). Ruhrfisch ><>°° 15:34, 9 August 2013 (UTC)
We can't read every talk page ;) (+ he archives quickly) - My most frequent infoboxes are Bach's works. (German, French, Dutch Wikipedias all have them.) The standard lead for the 200+ cantatas is a very brief "title - BWV# - occasion - location - first performance". Some made it to GA, those have more lead, see BWV 103. Even the ones with a short lead have additional information in the infobox about number of movements, text sources (typically three in one cantata), scoring and relationship to other works. In the article, I expect people to be first interested in the history, so that's first in the article, but a musician might just want to know if his instrument is featured. Looking forward to hearing three of them tonight! --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:08, 9 August 2013 (UTC)

I heard that great concert, and mentioned it on the Main page, quoted on top of my talk. The (male continuo) members of the orchestra rose to sing the finale chorale with the (already standing) ladies on violins, violas and oboes - an unforgettable experience. - If you looked (at the top of my talk) you saw the translation of the words, a prayer. - Elegies: I would like to work amicably with all whom I proclaimed precious and see them on different sides of a battle which I don't understand (although I have been on both sides) and which leaves me hurt. (look for "shouted" on my user.) I placed "letting go of the past" on my talk in February, did you know? --Gerda Arendt (talk) 16:34, 26 August 2013 (UTC)

Help with C-SPAN

Hi again, Ruhrfisch. It seems you're quite busy elsewhere on Wikipedia at the moment. I'm wondering if you might be able to suggest an editor who could help implement the suggestions you made on the C-SPAN Talk page a couple of weeks ago? As you know I've really had a hard time attracting editors to this Talk page. Otherwise, I'll probably take it to FAC before the end of the week, and please follow up with your suggested changes whenever you like. Cheers, WWB Too (Talk · COI) 17:58, 15 August 2013 (UTC)

School District Key

Hi Ruhrfisch,

I know you uploaded them over 7 years ago but do you happen to know what the colors mean on your PA school district maps like this one? I want to add a keep to them. Thanks for creating them! gren グレン 07:07, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

Thank you. I think it was a bit late in my time zone when I was reading the map. For some reason I was thinking you had two colors next to each other rather than reading it as Garnet Vallet SD is made up for Bethel, Concord, and Chester Heights. Thank you for clarifying. gren グレン 18:45, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

WP:FOUR RFC

There are two WP:RFCs at WP:FOUR. The first is to conflate issues so as to keep people from expressing meaningful opinions. The second, by me, is claimed to be less than neutral by proponents of the first. Please look at the second one, which I think is much better.--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 07:20, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

map of the PA state parks

I'm intrigued by your map of the PA state parks, and would like to look into doing it for CT (and maybe other places) I'm guessing your starting points are the geocoords for each park, then an algorithm to convert into position locations. If so, can you share it? It would seem like I could reproduce if I can pull together the geocoords of CT state parks, as well as needing, presumably, the geocoords of the corners of a CT state map.--SPhilbrick(Talk) 19:29, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

Spelling

Hi. A tiny note about spelling. "organisations" is the British English spelling of the word, so doesn't require a [sic] in your comment at [12]. Every little bit of friendliness helps. :) –Quiddity (talk) 20:05, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

Thanks Quiddity - I actually knew that (as well as the quote about "The United States and Great Britain are two countries separated by a common language."). I've noticed that when Pigsonthewing copies and pastes what other editors wrote, he will use [sic] to point out any errors, so I was trying to make a little joke (which obviously did not work at all). I appreciate your taking the time to tell me, and will increase my labo(u)rs to not let humo(u)r colo(u)r my edits. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:47, 20 August 2013 (UTC)
PS I was so busy being silly here that I missed your point: "Every little bit of friendliness helps." I have accordingly removed my sic and made the spelling in my section follow AE. Thanks and sorry, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 20:51, 20 August 2013 (UTC)
PPS And apologized. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 21:20, 20 August 2013 (UTC)
Thanks :) And yah, humo(u)r is indeed very difficult to convey in text. Sadly the irony mark (and variants) never caught on, and the original (Emoticon#Creation_of_:-.29_and_:-.28) emoticon suggestion "for joke markers" was quickly subsumed! –Quiddity (talk) 22:20, 20 August 2013 (UTC)
Putting "(joke)" after a comment does not work well either. Sigh, Ruhrfisch ><>°° 23:07, 20 August 2013 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Peer review/2012–13 Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team/archive1

Wikipedia:Peer review/2012–13 Michigan Wolverines men's basketball team/archive1 just closed. Are we now letting PRs close with no review?--TonyTheTiger (T / C / WP:FOUR / WP:CHICAGO / WP:WAWARD) 11:50, 21 August 2013 (UTC)

PRs are closing without review because there are insufficient editors prepared to spend time reviewing articles there. There is no longer a cohort of dedicated editors (basically Ruhrfisch, Finetooth and myself) prepared to cover 20 to 30 reviews apiece each month to ensure that every PR got attention. After doing this for several years, we wore ourselves out and found more interesting things to do. Efforts to persuade other editors to review at PR on a regular basis, even to the extent of maybe three or four a month, have failed. So the situation is now that up to half of peer review nominations are closed without comment; unfortunately this won't change, until editors are more generally prepared to commit to the PR process. Sorry You Won't Get a OBD (Orange Bar of Death) for This

but stilled wanted to say hi after all this time and ask you a question. The last article on which I was working was Connotations (Copland). For it, I had received permission from the New York Philharmonic Archives to use a picture of Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein together during rehearsals for the world premiere of Connotations. However, Commons has deleted this image twice. This was probably my fault as I don't really know what info, banners, whatever I should use to get the powers that be to realize that yes, it's okay to use this. Any advice? Thanks and hope to hear from you soon. Jonyungk (talk) 00:34, 29 August 2013 (UTC)

Re: Canvassing

I think most arbs don't look kindly on editors bringing discussions to their pages as opposed to the PD page; I don't engage editors there. Any emails we get about the case, we tell the senders to post it publicly unless it's a matter of private evidence, etc. I'm sorry the arbitration case is stressful for you. A barnstar for you!

The Civility Barnstar
I've been impressed by your calm and sanity in the midst of the playground that is the current squabble over infoboxes and certain involved individuals. I hope one day you will be awarded a Barnstar of Diplomacy, but I guess it's premature to do so before this particular conflict is resolved. Anyway, just to let you know someone's noticed. Alfietucker (talk) 09:19, 10 September 2013 (UTC)

Your opinion, please

In 2010, you helped to decide what we should do with two National Register listings that had proven to be the same place; the discussion can be seen at Talk:Twin Oaks (Wyoming, Ohio). I've found another such situation and asked for help at the "Cedar Point Light" section of WT:NRHP. Would you be willing to chime in? Nyttend (talk) 03:02, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

This character

My first take on this character - Amanda Jane Mason was users Rinpoche, or Mattisse or Davenbelle (Jack Merridew) or possibly Research Method. Thanks for your SPI...Modernist (talk) 11:58, 13 September 2013 (UTC)

Thank you

For the traditionally visible barnstar; the implied ones are grand, but they do grow tiresome after a while, no? Anyways I always thought you were a great guy, this has been reinforced serveral times over the last few weeks, in quite a few instances. Go well and prosper! Ruhrfisch. DYK Review?

Hi there, I found your name listed as someone who can help out with DYK nominations. I have a DYK nomination that has been sitting for awhile and was wondering if you might be able to review? Thank you.Hmlarson (talk) 04:00, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

Please disregard my previous request. I've decided to withdraw the nomination. Thank you. Hmlarson (talk) 05:17, 19 September 2013 (UTC)

Please comment at Xiaxue's ongoing peer review!

You have listed yourself as a peer review volunteer. Would you like to support the quest to counter systemic bias on Wikipedia? Would you like to read an interesting article about something different? If so, you are invited to give a thorough review of the article Xiaxue, which is about a Singaporean celebrity blogger. The article is very short and should not take long to review. Hope you enjoy reviewing it as much as I enjoyed writing it. Thanks! 谢谢!Terima kasih! நன்றி! --J.L.W.S. The Special One (talk) 12:07, 17 September 2013 (UTC)

Just a thanks!
