:{{u|CambridgeBayWeather}} Isn't a neccesary redirect. The businessman is known as Joshua Carl Gruss not Josh Gruss, there aren't broken links or references. For this reason I proposed for deletion.

Polar oases

Thanks for the help with the rain + snow > precipitation question. Here's another question.

What is a polar oasis? It's mentioned in the infobox image's caption at Devon Island, but I'm not sure what's meant. Just a wet spot in a polar desert? An exceptionally warm place surrounded by "ordinary" polar climates? A Google search basically just finds irrelevant stuff, especially some company by this name that sells frozen snacks from food trucks in the Kansas City metropolitan area. Nyttend (talk) 02:41, 3 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Nyttend. I'm not a 100% sure but it seems to be an are where the climate is milder and the ground would have more moisture than the surrounding area giving greater plant life, oasis. As the polar desert points out most of the Arctic has little precipitation but the Truelove Lowlands has a "favourable microclimate". I did find some references to polar oasis but they tended to be about plant/animal life in that area(Truelove Lowlands, "polar oasis" define), what is a polar oasis). Alexandra Fiord and Svalbard (Svalbard – A Polar Oasis by Wayne Lynch) are given as polar oasis. I did find Antarctic oasis but nothing really useful. By the way Devon Island seems to be the only mention on Wikipedia ("polar oasis").
Thank you. This is somewhat like I was imagining with "an exceptionally warm place...", although I wasn't expecting that greater moisture would also be involved. Do we have a good article explaining why the poles are deserts? I'm not clear if it's related to the ice cover (i.e. sublimation produces less water vapor than evaporation does, and thus it's not possible for as much precipitation to fall), or if it's more related to the prevailing winds and thus analogous to the deserts in the Horse latitudes, or if there's some other cause. Nyttend (talk) 00:17, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I'm not sure why the Arctic has little precipitation and polar climate doesn't seem to help. Although we seem to have a lot of freshwater. Right now I'm at work and Internet is dial up speed and can't really look off Wikipedia. Some links you may find interesting. Compare the precipitation at Cambridge Bay#Climate and Phoenix, Arizona#Climate and then use something like Google Earth to compare the amount of visible water around Cambridge to Phoenix. Also Polynya and the North Water Polynya are interesting. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 00:49, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
It basically comes down to the Clausius-Clapeyron equation. Saturation vapor pressure is approximately an exponential function of temperature. Therefore, in a cold climate there is relatively little moisture in the air that will be available to condense out as rain or snow. User:Nyttend's point about saturation vapor pressure over ice being lower than over liquid also is relevant for some circumstances.
The Arctic is a "desert" in the sense that annual precipitation is less than 250 mm over much of the region (though it is considerably higher in some locations, such as coastal Greenland). That's a fairly commonly used criterion for "desert" but it's a rather arbitrary one. Arguably a more meaningful functional definition is whether precipitation is much less than potential evapotranspiration, for example as used in defining dry (B-type) climates in the Koeppen climate classification scheme. By this measure the fraction of the Arctic covered by desert would be much smaller. Shock Brigade Harvester Boris (talk) 04:10, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Question

I was wondering if WP:MRNOT specifically the part that states "not on the person who closed the discussion" would relate to this [1] Move Request (specifically to everything added in this revision [2]? And if so is there anything I can do about it? (Also: yes I realize I dug myself in a deep hole it was not my intention and I'm not asking you to participate I'm just exploring my options.) TheDoctorWho (talk) 01:59, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I don't really think there is much you can do. Sorry. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 10:03, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Small request

Hi, it is too small a thing to take to admin noticeboard for now, but following WP:3RR and WP:BRD could you suggest user TechnicianGB to edit constructively, discuss on talk page to reach consensus with editors he is in conflict with and self-revert following his violation of 3RR rule in 24 hours here:

I have asked him myself, but it would be great for you to encourage him to follow proper procedures when attempting to unilaterally change an article. I am personally not involved in the edit dispute. Farangizsaifi (talk) 11:27, 4 October 2017 (UTC)

Template:U:. I see that you and TechnicianGB have posted on your talk pages and Talk:African admixture in Europe which is good. Right now they can't revert because I fully protected it. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 11:33, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I just warned today this user for breaking the 3RR rule and to check the sources for a constructive edition on the page and now it's accusing me of doing it, lol. I'm telling him that the 3 RR doesn't count for self reversions or for reversions of 3rd party anonymous IPs but he is just in the "this is my version mood" and doesn't want to hear nothing.

After those 3 reversions I warned him and then I proposed the page for protection:

I also warned him and he started this senseless discussion blaming me for breaking the rules... this user is pretty new and i'm sure that he has to read a bit better about the rules, as he blamed me before for "breaking the self reversion rule" which is clearly stated that a self reversion does not enter in a 3 RR reversion.

He is also neither editing constructively editing the page, as he is putting changes which contradict the source'. in that African admixture page. I'm just writing things which are mentioned on the sources and below, as those things are not mentioned on any source and he claims that it's a stable version, which was posted months ago by an anonymous IP. --TechnicianGB (talk) 11:42, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

CambridgeBayWeather, TechnicianGB: I am not involved in this nor do I aim to become involved in his content dispute with another editor. My only role here has been asking for discussion on talk upon coming across the edit war initated by this editor who disliked the stable version. I have just noticed a breach of procedure TechnicianGB reverting 4 times in 24 hours (EXCLUDING self-reverts - that would make it 5 or 6 as can be seen from his edit history). I also note that it is bad faith to initiate an edit war with another editor to change a stable version and upon the 4th revert to request for the page to be protected to the version he is trying to push through against the stable version. CambridgeBayWesther, I know that there is a rule regarding WP:WRONGVERSION, but I request that when the protection expires, you or TechnicianGB revert it to its original stable version (which has remained for a number of months) and encourage discussion on talk page as per WP:BRD). This is my understanding of Wikipedia rules - note I have avoided taking these breaches to noticeboard - I hate wasting the time of administrators. TechnicianGB as you know I have tried to reason with you as cordially as possible. Rules are there to be followed. Best regards,Farangizsaifi (talk) 11:57, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

That page didn't have a stable version! Those changes were made by anonymous IP users which made a few changes on the page and then never appeared back. Nevermind, we are amending it. That wasn't backed up by the source so it's senseless to revert again to that version. It's as simply as that, if a source can't back up the text (or says different things) then that text has to been removed, as in this case we have lots of sources there and no one says or shows "southern" or "western" but specific places, which you were reverting.

It's not hard to understand, you were reverting good edits based on sources to edits which are not backed on sources. Nevermind again, the admins took care of the issue to see which are factual sources or not. Senseless to continue this ! --TechnicianGB (talk) 12:05, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

TechnicianGB The version has been stable since 2015. That is 2 years. Please self-revert as soon as you can and discuss proposed edits on talk page. You are in breach of WP:BRD, WP:3RR and WP:STABLE. CambridgeBayWeather I'm not sure whether I should take this to admin noticeboard. It is a violation of 3 Wikipedia rules in one go, which is pretty serious. Farangizsaifi (talk) 12:14, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

@Farangizsaifi: 1st of all, you broke the 3RR, the WP:BRD and the sources were not backing up the text !!! there is no stable version in this case, as it's false information. What is hard to understand for you ? Facepalm Facepalm I already did the job, I proposed it for protection and the admis are taking care of it. What do you want more ? Your accusations against me are very weak and they haven't got any backup as i'm just sticking to edit factual information and deleting false one which is not mentioned in any source... --TechnicianGB (talk) 12:18, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I even let a new message in your talk page considering that this discussion is resolved? But I see that you are still in your "I don't hear mood". Ok, for me the discussion is over. Admins are taking care to check sources and data... --TechnicianGB (talk) 12:19, 4 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Incorrect level article protection

Hi, it seems you have protected the Israeli involvement in the Syrian Civil War as 30/500, even though the article belongs to the SCW&ISIL sanctions regime (not WP:ARBPIA which generally is associated with 30/500). The Syrian Civil War arena is not a part of the Arab-Israeli conflict as concluded in motion and later Community Level Sanctions decision. We can consider SCW&ISIL sanctions to be raised to 30/500 level, but do you think it is necessary?GreyShark (dibra) 15:43, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Greyshark09. I missed that. So there is no need for any protection. However, I wouldd caution you to be careful. It appears that you made what could be classified as 2 or 3 reverts on the same day. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 18:43, 8 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the reply and the notice. Do you refer to my 4 edits on October 4th [3]? If so, to my best understanding those are consecutive reverts and are to be counted as 1 for the purpose of 1RR or 3RR. Am i wrong?GreyShark (dibra) 11:42, 10 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Now that you mention it I'm not sure. I'll look it up again. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 21:03, 10 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

WikiProject Canada 10,000 Challenge submissions

Hey, I want to draw your attention to the The 10,000 Challenge.

It is soon be reaching its first-anniversary. Please consider submitting any Canada-related articles you have created or improved since November 2016. Please try to ensure that all entries are sourced with formatted citations and no unsourced claims. I am contacting you because I know that you wrote a lot about the north (Yukon, NWT, Nunavut) and articles from those areas are vastly underrepresented.

You may submit articles using this link for convenience. Thank-you, and please spread the word to those you know who might be interested in joining this effort to improve the quality of Canada-related articles. OhanaUnitedTalk page 17:13, 10 October 2017 (UTC)[reply]

EDITS TO BRITISH RADIO CAR ASSOCIATION

Hi

Many thanks for undoing a couple of hours of my work while i try and get the page, semi representive of what the BRCA is, who is running it and where we are based!

We are not a paid company, and all of the edits I actioned are based from our public information, nobody else has ever bothered to update this page in as many years, the last edits were also from myself.

Example is our head quarters, it hasnt been there for around 25 years!

I wasnt aware i was breaking any terms? I believed this place to be a community place where everybody contributes, my actions following my edits was to ask some of our long term racers to come and contribute now i had (read had as its now gone) some form of structure for them to follow and adjust, however thats down the pan unless you can restore it?

I really would like to get this sorted out as i wish to get the page representive are to what we are

Regards

Darren — Preceding unsigned comment added by Secretary-brca (talkcontribs) 22:45, 9 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Secretary-brca. None of your edits are completely removed and can be seen in the history, here or here. On Wikipedia a conflict of interest (Wikipedia:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide) is not just confined to money matters. It is anything that you have a relationship to. In general, editing with a COI is not forbidden but it is preferred that you make your case on the talk page first. You must let others know, on your talk page or the article talk page, that you are associated with the BRCA. Some of the problems I saw were that Wikipedia doesn't like links to other websites in section headers. They could be used as references at the end of the section. Also there shouldn't be <small></small> tags in the article like that. The last problem was that you copied directly from the BRCA website. That is a copyright violation and has to be removed. As you must know the BRCA site has "Copyright © 1971-2016 British Radio Car Association [BRCA]. All Rights Reserved." at the page bottom. Template:CFS

Hello.

I noticed that you partially reverted my change on {{CFS}}. If that's really a title, it should not change depending on date format, should it? And shouldn't the title be in italics, or at least in quotes?

Also, parenthetically, the word "to" makes the template violate WP:Copyedit#Punctuation.

HandsomeFella (talk) 21:18, 19 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

HandsomeFella I hadn't thought about that but it probably should be in quotes. It's off the front cover and the date changes every 56 days. See File:CanadaFlightSupplement20Jan05.jpg for an example. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 22:00, 19 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

"Silver Chair" versus "Silver Chair (disambiguation)"

Dear Sir,
You have recently reverted my Move Article of the disambiguation page from Silver Chair to Silver Chair (disambiguation). I feel you have made this revert with little forethought nor regard to the relevant associations with that page. I am not in a position to undo your revert (and doing so would be unwise). I therefor ask that you take a closer look at the intent and impact of the Move Article I initiated.

It began when I attempted to access the Prince Caspian/The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (1989 TV serial) article, but Wikipedia instead dropped me on the The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian article. Initially, I added the TV serial article to the {About} template, but then decided that this further cluttered an already cluttered template. Having realized that the disambiguation Prince Caspian covered the content in the cluttered {About} template, I opted to remove the clutter.

I then proceeded to check the other related articles for this problem, finding the The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (disambiguation) page does not exist and had to leave the The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader {About} template cluttered as is.

When I had reached the The Chronicles of Narnia: The Silver Chair article, I had discovered that the disambiguation page of Silver Chair, was minimally populated compared with its counterparts, and included an Australian rock band Silverchair which had no association with the Narnian franchise other than its similar name.

Thus, in keeping with the article title formatting of most disambiguation pages known to me, and that the Silverchair rock band was also included in the list, this signifies a necessity to change the page name to Silver Chair (disambiguation). This was a very logical and well thought out change, in which I went back and checked for any article I could find that might link to Silver Chair. While you state that the change was "Not necessary", you had not explained your reasoning behind this, nor did you adjust any of the pages which link to Silver Chair (disambiguation), which leads me to believe your revert was simply based on an un-researched whim rather than any logical conclusion.

As I have previously stated, I am not in a position to directly challenge your revert. But I do ask that you at least go back and review the changes made, and if you still feel Move Article is "Not necessary," then I would like to know your thoughts on that position and to reconsider your revert. Most disambiguation pages state so in their article title, and article title formatting should at least be used consistently.
Christopher, Sheridan, OR (talk) 06:39, 20 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

DeNoel. I was going by Wikipedia:Manual of Style/Disambiguation pages#Page naming and Wikipedia:Disambiguation#Naming the disambiguation page. Both of these say "The title of a disambiguation page is the ambiguous term itself, provided there is no primary topic for that term. If there is a primary topic, then the tag "(disambiguation)" is added to the name of the disambiguation page, as in Jupiter (disambiguation)." Also, Wikipedia:WikiProject Disambiguation#Create or move a disambiguation page So you get Arm (disambiguation) because arm is the primary topic but DDB (it's a disambiguation) which has no primary topic. In this case Silver Chair does not appear to have a primary topic so go with the simpler term. Having "Title (disambiguation)" which redirects to "Title" at the top of a page is so that bots (and humans) know that the disambiguation link was done on purpose. It can be done like {{Redirect|Psychedelics|other uses|Psychedelic (disambiguation){{!}}Psychedelic}} which can be found at the top of Psychedelic drug. Of course I can't find the instructions for that right now. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 12:40, 20 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Cena Arz It's best to wait until the protection expires and see if it is still necessary. There is no need to do that now. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 01:02, 26 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

A page needs protection.

Greetings, sir. The following page is being attacked by an anonymous vandal, who is edit-warring there, removing scholarly sources and numbers from the infobox or changing the numbers to those taken from thin air, all without explanation. Since he comes from different IP addresses, I'm kindly asking you to protect the article for a while. Californian Cat (talk) 16:32, 29 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

ANI Experiences survey

The Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative (led by the Safety and Support and Anti-Harassment Tools team) is conducting a survey for en.wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with the Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works - which problems it deals with well, and which problems it struggles with.

The survey should take 10-20 minutes to answer, and your individual responses will not be made public. The survey is delivered through Google Forms. The privacy policy for the survey describes how and when Wikimedia collects, uses, and shares the information we receive from survey participants and can be found here:

Guideline and policy news

  • Following a request for comment, a new section has been added to the username policy which disallows usernames containing emoji, emoticons or otherwise "decorative" usernames, and usernames that use any non-language symbols. Administrators should discuss issues related to these types of usernames before blocking.

Miscellaneous

  • Over the last few months, several users have reported backlogs that require administrator attention at WP:ANI, with the most common backlogs showing up on WP:SPI, WP:AIV and WP:RFPP. It is requested that all administrators take some time during this month to help clear backlogs wherever possible. It should be noted that AIV reports are not always valid; however, they still need to be cleared, which may include needing to remind users on what qualifies as vandalism.
  • The Wikimedia Foundation Community health initiative is conducting a survey for English Wikipedia contributors on their experience and satisfaction level with Administrator’s Noticeboard/Incidents. This survey will be integral to gathering information about how this noticeboard works (i.e. which problems it deals with well and which problems it struggles with). If you would like to take this survey, please sign up on this page, and a link for the survey will be emailed to you via Special:EmailUser.

Happy Holidays
From Stave one of Dickens A Christmas Carol

Old Marley was as dead as a door-nail. Mind! I don’t mean to say that I know, of my own knowledge, what there is particularly dead about a door-nail. I might have been inclined, myself, to regard a coffin-nail as the deadest piece of ironmongery in the trade. But the wisdom of our ancestors is in the simile; and my unhallowed hands shall not disturb it, or the Country’s done for. You will therefore permit me to repeat, emphatically, that Marley was as dead as a door-nail.

So you see even Charles was looking for a reliable source :-) Thank you for your contributions to the 'pedia. ~ MarnetteD|Talk 00:30, 24 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your Lock on BALANS was removed/edited

BALANS

Your locking the article has been circumvented by the Romanian User whom is the culprit here. He has also removed the deletion tag on this.

Please revert back to my edit and re-insert the tag.

Cartoon network freak is the abuser and should be blocked.

Just to clarify everything, you are the "abuser" who keeps reverting my GA version of the article, checked in concordance with Wikipedia's guidelines, to your alleged "better" version which literally only consists of a few poorly-written paragraphs and nearly no refs. Just think for yourself a bit. You're wrong, so please accept it. The only one who should be blocked is you, both for reverting the GA version to your poppycock version, AND for being rude on my talk page and edit summaries. Go away. Cartoon network freak (talk) 11:55, 25 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Musicstarboy007. Please provide links to where the article was copied from. Oh and you added a WP:PROD which can be removed by anybody. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 11:59, 25 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

My point is that the article reverted to by Cartoon Freak above is inaccurate and supporting an infringing release. After you locked the page on my edit (the correct edit noting only the official SONY MUSIC release), cartoon freak was still able to revert the article back to the bad one even with your lock.

Please re-insert a removal/deletion tag and revert to my edit with the lock. These guys have no intention of discussion and just want to war, without any knowledge of the situation or artist.

They have even removed my comments from the talk page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Musicstarboy007 (talkcontribs) 12:03, 25 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I tried to talk to you a million times, but you always reverted the article to your version. The article was not "copied" from anywhere. It was promoted to GA; you can also check the history to see how I searched for sources and expanded it bit by bit by myself. Go read Wikipedia's guidelines before throwing your shit on pages like those. Sorry for my language, but are really disrespectful towards hard work done by users to get an article to GA. Cartoon network freak (talk) 12:10, 25 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I hope were not destroying your talk page, though, CambridgeBayWeather ;) Cartoon network freak (talk) 12:12, 25 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Musicstarboy007 No I will not add a deletion tag. Once you are unblocked go to Talk:Balans (song) and point out which parts you believe are wrong and provide sources to prove it. And what on earth does the nationality of any user have to do with it? Cartoon network freak. You should not remove their comments on the Talk:Balans (song) page. They may be poppycock but they can say it. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 20:27, 25 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Got it sir! Hope something good comes out of this ;) Best, Cartoon network freak (talk) 20:32, 25 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Editor

Would you have a moment to look at the edits of this editor? They appear to be completely unsourced, and finding the source to support them is not so easy. Thanks. Magnolia677 (talk) 10:14, 28 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Magnolia677 I looked and reverted some of them as being un-sourced. They know how to source but I'm not sure why they aren't. I realised that just reverting them is probably not the best way to do it. I have some other stuff I wanted to do so I will look at the again later and see if I can find the sources. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 17:05, 28 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Magnolia677 (talk) 02:23, 29 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
CookieMonster755. I saw it but no point in waiting for the results. The name alone is blockworthy. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 23:59, 31 December 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, CambridgeBayWeather, I am glad you blocked them. I was not condemning that they were in violation of username policy for impersonating me, and I am glad you blocked them. I just left this message just to let you know that there was a sock puppet investigation. Happy New Year! CookieMonster755 01:14, 1 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Josh Gruss

Good afternoon! Please don't undo the wiki deletion proposal. All the links were fixed and nothing links here.

You can check it if you want.

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by EsTemporal (talkcontribs) 20:56, 3 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

EsTemporal. See my reply on your talk page. CambridgeBayWeather, Uqaqtuq (talk), Sunasuttuq 20:59, 3 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]

CambridgeBayWeather Isn't a neccesary redirect. The businessman is known as Joshua Carl Gruss not Josh Gruss, there aren't broken links or references. For this reason I proposed for deletion.

Thanks. --EsTemporal (talk) 21:08, 3 January 2018 (UTC)[reply]
