    @Espoo: The wikitext parser is confused by the special characters inside two of the external links. I found this by "commenting out" those links. Your best workaround is probably to just link to the dictionaries and not try to link to the page with the word itself, or you may experiment with other workarounds. -Arch dude (talk) 01:55, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    ZakiaHossain Wikipedia is not a place for people to publish their autobiographies or otherwise write about themselves. Please see the autobiography policy. Wikipedia also has no interest in aiding search results for you, in helping your fans find you, or otherwise helping your career. Social media is the proper place for you to tell the world about yourself.
    You seem to have a common misconception about what Wikipedia is. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and as an encyclopedia Wikipedia is only interested in what others unaffiliated with the subject say about it. A subject merits a Wikipedia article if it is shown with significant coverage in independent reliable sources to meet the special Wikipedia definition of notability(in this case, the definition of a notable creative professional). Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject wants to say about themselves.
    If you meet the notability criteria, eventually an independent editor will take note of your career and choose to write about you. Any article about you would not be under your exclusive control. You could not lock it to the text you might prefer, or prevent others from editing it. Any information about you, good or bad, can be in an article about you as long as it appears in an independent reliable source and is not defamatory.     Question about Wikipedia

    Pretty much daily, people write here "Why does Wikipedia do this and that about so-and-so?" Apparently they think Wikipedia is a single, homogenous, coherent entity that has official employees and an official opinion.

    Nothing could be further from the truth. Wikipedia is a project run entirely by volunteers. I, for example, am a typical Wikipedia editor. I am not employed by Wikipedia, nor do I earn any other income from it. I do this entirely as a volunteer, as an altruistic hobby. So do thousands of others. Most of us don't know each other. So we often engage in arguments.

    Many people threaten to sue Wikipedia. Sue whom? There is no single "Wikipedia" entity. You can not sue the entire Wikipedia for something someone who the foundation behind Wikipedia doesn't even know, and is just doing this as a hobby, wrote.

    @JIP: I certainly don't have a great answer for you. I've also wondered how people can all be aware (and even complain) that anyone can edit Wikipedia without taking on the corollary that it isn't homogenous.     A good solution that would also encourage very many new people to start contributing to WP would be to change the off-putting, formal, bland, boring "From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia" at the top of every page to something more welcoming and more informative, f.ex.     Editing Archive?

    I edited and put a link into one of the many questions I asked on the Reference Desk that are now located in the archive for future reference. However, a high-profile administrator reverted my edit and claimed that it was not constructive even though it was just adding a link in a question I wrote.     Did I come across a conflict of interest?

    I'm an Occasional editor who mostly makes corrections and is probably over zealous about truth and stopping Vandalism.

    Who do I go to exactly if I think someone is trying to maintain a conflict of interest?

    On a certain film an editor placed a picture of a certain actor who had a bit role in a film after his role was drastically reduced in the released film the public received.

    He also brought his credit marker 4th under the credits.

    He had also placed a photograph of a director who had nothing to do with the film in the article but was supposed to work on a cancelled sequel.

    He had also removed a photo of the lead star and the actual director for the film and I believe that people who have not seen said film will be mislead into thinking that the role is more prominent.

    I just want to say I have no feelings about all the actors involved in the film. What I do have is an indignation for the sake of truth. Is that indignation too heavy in this case?

    ...Are you joking? You’re filing a conflict of interest claim? What is the conflict of interest exactly? I literally have no connections to Matthew Fox. None whatsoever. I feel I’ve explained this to you countless times in your talk page, on the Talk:World War Z (film) page, and now here, in that the image is there to convey that Fox, despite filming more scenes and having a bigger role in the film, was cut to a lone scene. It’s absolutely impossible for a reader to get misled because the caption under the photo specifically states that. Fox was moved to 4th placement because that’s how the billing block is formatted. This is a practice used across film articles on the website, we go by the credits on the films poster. And once again, the directors image in the section SPECIFICALLY ABOUT THE CANCELLED SEQUEL, is there explaining his role in said cancelled sequel. Why does this bother you so much that you’re now bringing this to help desk accusing me of having a conflict of interest when I absolutely have none of the sort?     Copy and Paste move problem

    Someone just copy and pasted a draft article still awaiting approval into a redirect. Specifically Draft:Min Min (character) into Min Min (character). I, thinking that the article got approved, edited templates and articles linking to the new article.     @Keastlake1: No, unfortunally not. You can howewer try to find said speech elsewhere online. In todays age, most speeches are recorded in some way, and either printed as a magazine or (at least for the cases I can observe) make their way onto Youtube via a Broadcast Television Sender.     You should make sure that you typed your email address in correctly, and that it is the address associated with the account. It is possible that there is a delay with the system as well. If the email does not work, you may need to create a new account and identify it as a successor to your original account.     Even if you are editing on behalf of a college professor, you cannot use the professor's account: you must use your own account, not one that is ever used by anyone else.     Pritam Shaw, if you type "hex color picker" into Google they'll give you a color picker where you can copy the code (marked with HEX) and replace the current bgcolor content with to change it. Hope that helps Ed6767 talk! 13:48, 8 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    @Pritam Shaw: I guess you mean the background of the headings. I'm not sure whether you are asking how to set a background color in the code or how you might decide which color to use. I don't know about the latter. Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi uses {{Infobox television}} at the top right infobox. It does not have a parameter for background color. The template code says background: #CCCCFF; with no option to change it. But the seasons in the sections use {{Infobox television season}} which does have a bg_colour parameter.     @Pritam Shaw: If the show doesn't associate seasons with a color then I would use the same color for all seasons. If the show in general is not associated with a color then I would omit the parameter and use the default color. I don't know the show and don't know why color was added to some of the season articles like different greens [1][2] in Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 6.     Hello, IP user. The answer is "almost certainly not", for several reasons. First, if you have published it on your website, then unless you explicitly release it under a licence such as CC-BY-SA, it would be a copyright violation. Secondly, because it is very very very unlikely that material you have put on your website is appropriate for a Wikipedia article.     I'll expand my answer a bit further. A Wikipedia article is a summary of what independent reliable sources have already published about a subject. Unless your site is that, then it is not appropriate.     Need clarity as who should be labelled as a 'paid editor'

    Hello There,

    I enjoy reading Wikipedia and I started a habit of updating the information in Wikipedia where I found it is either out of date or details are missing. I must say my experience recently is not so good. Today I am labelled as 'paid editor' for a missing page that I created for an very well know Indian asset management company. Link - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axis_Asset_Management_Company . I found this missing page from the main page at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mutual_funds_in_India. When I go to the main page of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Main_Page , there is a mention that it's a 'free encyclopedia that anyone can edit.'. Now when I have created the page I am being labelled by an wikipedia admin being a 'paid editor'. I take this an insult to my volunteering work.

    Can someone please help me in telling me that what is wrong with the page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Axis_Asset_Management_Company and why I am being labelled as a 'paid editor' by an admin.

    @Checkright: I think because of your limited editing history and the stub [[7]] you created for Axis' Asset Management group (subsequently turned into a redirect), it gave the appearance that you might be trying to promote the group or its mutual fund. It's possible that you were misjudged, but I can't make that determination. Regardless, I don't think there's enough sourcing in your stub for a standalone article, and discourage people from including competitor info (it's a spam magnet and is better to use a category), but you could look into adding a plain sentence or two about Axis Asset Management Group as a new section in Axis Bank#Subsidiaries.     Commons SVG image not being displayed properly in Wikipedia iOS app

    I've been trying to add the following SVG file ( which I created using Draw.io and Inkscape ) to the HP Saturn article :

    The problem is that the the iOS Wikipedia app doesn't display the above SVG correctly -- I just get a blank box.

    Does anyone know what the problem might be? I remember that the image used to be displayed correctly, so, maybe it's a problem with the iOS app?

    @Jdbtwo: I see a lot of the "inkscape:" namespace within the SVG. It's possible that the app has trouble with this. In Inkscape, try save as... Plain SVG. I'm unfamiliar with the app, but if it can display local files the way any browser can, you can check your file locally without uploading it to the Wikimedia servers.     Use of hyphenation in compound modifiers

    Particularly, I'm interested in phrases like "second most dexterous"; could anyone please tell me if it should be "second-most dexterous" or "second-most-dexterous", in either case before a noun? Sorry if this has been asked here before, or if it was covered in the MOS section on hyphens and I missed it while skimming through it, since I only focused on the text in red (sorry not to have read the whole thing).     @Thylacine24: This is definitely a can of worms. I would suggest that no hyphens are needed at all. This web page has a good discussion, invoking the Chicago Manual of Style. The Manual recommends not using hyphens "unless ambiguity threatens", using this pair of examples:

    @Lekarren: Usually if it's just 2-3 things that are unsourced, you can flag them with the citation needed template. If it's more than that, I'd leave the additional citations template at the top.     thank you. No matter how many times I stare at the directions for refname, I don't understand what to do. Can you show me once on the page? I even tried to see how it is done on other pages. For example, on this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jacksonville,_Florida citations 190 and 191 are the same, but I don't see what you mean by refname.     @Lekarren: All refs are horrible and beastly and a source of endless pain. To concatenate refs, do this for the first ref:<ref name="MyRef"> Properly formatted reference eg [https://www.random.stuff Random stuff] </ref> For subsequent refs to the same link, do this: <ref name="MyRef" />. This will appear as:[1] For subsequent refs to the same link, do this:[1] and all will be good. It's best to use quotes when defining the name for the first time. The name can be defined once anywhere in the article, it doesn't have to be the first instance.     I believe that you're editing with the best of intentions, but your username breaches the rules here. (A username must be for a single person, and mustn't be, or appear to be, for a group or organization.) Please simply abandon the username (which you seem to have used only for the one edit above) and adopt a different one ("Jessica in Magrath", for example). Once you've done that, the simplest procedure might be to write on Talk:Magrath that Magrath has a new logo and that this may be found at such-and-such a URL (http(s)://whatever.whatever/whatever/whatever).     Apply math formula in a table?

    When building tables here in Wikipedia, is there a way to apply a mathematical formula to a value in a cell (or several cells) in order to show the result in another cell? For a project here, I'm working from an archaic astronomical work. It gives Right Ascension in Degrees, Minutes, and Seconds. Of course, the standard now is Hours, Minutes, and Seconds. An Hour of Right Ascension is 15 degrees, but it's rather more complicated than just dividing by 15.

    @AzseicsoK: If the table is edited as table cells in the wiki source then one cell cannot read the value of another cell. If a Help:Table#Row template is used to make table rows then it's possible to pass one value to the template and use it to make multiple cells. Maybe you can combine {{Decdeg}} and {{Deg2HMS}} for the conversion. If you want to display both values without using a row template then you can manually copy the original value to another cell which applies a conversion to it.     Does "no original research" apply to calculating percentages from raw numbers?

    I would like to add census data concerning demographics etc. to the articles for specific towns, based on this pdf. It lists percentages for statistics at the sub-district level, but for individual settlements it only gives the raw numbers (i.e. X many people in category Y). Would it be a violation of WP:OR to convert this to percentages to then include in the article?

    Is including text directly from ballot initiatives acceptable?

    I've been working on creating the article Draft:Michigan Proposal 18-2. Under contents, I copied verbatim the what was written on ballots.     How can I stop someone uploading inaccurate information about my Great Grandfather

    My Great Grandfather was a Rugby Player for the Welsh squad. He had three children. this resulted in 4 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren. All who are alive are in close contact. His daughter is still alive at the age of 93.

    Every few weeks the page gets updated to add a man called Colin as a grandchild and his 3 rugby playing sons as grandsons.

    I have looked into the history and it appears that this man has set up a BOT to continually update this incorrect information. I have investigated this in a genealogical way and there is no chance that this family are direct descendants. It is upsetting his daughter who is still alive.

    Please can someone let me know how to rectify this. The Bot that keeps editing this is "AnomieBOT"

    @LisaEdwards1978:First of all, What AnomieBOT is doing is removing empty <ref>-Tags from the page, as they are pointless and cause error messages. As for the family tree, it appears that this was removed entirely because it wasn't WP:RS. For future reference, strictly speaking you should not edit the page yourself as you have what Wikipedia calls a conflict of interest but you can make requests at the article talk page.     I'm afraid that, as they stand, none of those pictures can be used, Pritam Shaw. Are you in a position to take a picture of him yourself, or do you know somebody who could? In that case the photographer would be able to license it appropriately as they uploaded it. Alternatively, if you approach the Diocese, they might be willing to license the picture appropriately: see Donating copyright materials, and be aware that D'Souza is probably not the owner of the copyright, and the Diocese may or may not be, depending on the circumstances in which the pictures were taken.     Fair use is completely out of the question for a living subject, {U|Pritam Shaw}}, as it is in principle always possible for someone to take a new photo of a living person and release it under the appropriate licence.
    Images found on the internet are overwhelmingly subject to copyright, even if they are not immediately labelled as such.     Tucker Carlson listed as a Journalist is incorrect

    Tucker Carlson has never studied Journalism, and just because he wrote two books and is a political commentator, that does not make him a Journalist. Further, his lawyers have just recently argued in court that no one expects truth from Tucker Carlson. True Journalists are held to a high standard of truth in reporting. Tucker Carlson's own lawyers are arguing that he is not a true Journalist. So, I edited Carlson's page yesterday to remove the word Journalist, and someone, who normally edits Eastern European pages, reverted the changes back.     Problem with relisting MfD debate

    The MfD debate Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/User:Kappa/Kaaos (2nd nomination) has been open but inactive for a month now. I tried to follow the relisting instructions by adding {{subst:mfdr}} at the top and {{subst:relist}} at the bottom. The instructions say that a bot will shortly come along and add a link to the debate from the current day's listing. However, a reference (which in itself is not reliable) and external links are provided and formatted properly. I suggest checking WP:EASYREFBEGIN to learn how to properly cite reliable sources. You should probably also review Wikipedia's stance on conflicts of interest as you appear to have declared a relationship with the subject, and said declaration should appear on your user page (something like {{UserboxCOI}} is helpful).

    Apparently you can't recognize a typo (interesting that B and M are close to each other), so that has no context whatsoever.     @MichaelAdamsOttawa: I took a quick look at the draft. The sources you have used seem to be highly specialist publications, with possibly quite limited circulation  and I can't help wondering if they have real "arms-length" independence from the subjects of their articles. Try to find sources that are less esoteric, such as this report from CBS News or this article by the Ottowa Citizen. A substantial article or two by national or regional general newspapers or broadcasters can be worth far more than entire volumes by a "narrow interest" specialist periodical (unless it's a peer-reviewed academic journal of course).     Help edit company page

    Hi there, I'm reaching out to you on behalf of Recruitee, with regard to our company page. We are looking into refreshing the content displayed on Wikipedia and in the meantime saw that there is a banner on the top mentioning 'undisclosed payments' in returns for the current article.     It is not "your company page", it is a Wikipedia article about your company. While your input is welcome, you have no more rights to the article than any other editor. Please review the conflict of interest and paid editing policies for information on disclosures you are required to make. The tag that you refer to means that it is thought the article was created or edited by persons who did not comply with those policies, such as a company representative. Compliance with the paid editing policy is a Terms of Use requirement
    If you have suggestions for changes to the article about your company, you should offer them as formal edit requests(click for instructions) on the article talk page. You should avoid editing the article directly. Please note that the article about your company should primarily summarize what independent reliable sources say about your company, not what the company wants to say about itself.     The article was created by someone who has edited no other Wikipedia article. Its opening sentence, written by that editor, is in jargon, and does not make it clear whether the subject is a company, a software package, or something else. So it's very likely that the article was created by a PR person on behalf of Recruitee. The article certainly needs attention, but not by anyone with a conflict of interest.     Link to Commonscat for images

    I have just started work on an article about Fleet Brook in Hampshire, England. I uploaded four pictures to Commons from the Geograph project, and put them in a [Fleet Brook, Hampshire] category, because there were Fleet Brooks in Canada and Nova Scotia. When I added a {Commonscat inline|Fleet Brook, Hampshire} to the article I got a "Warning: Commons category does not match the Commons sitelink on Wikidata - please check (this message is shown only in preview)". I am not sure I understand what the Commons sitelink on Wikidata is, and whether I need to do anything about this to resolve it. Bob1960evens (talk) 14:27, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Just ignore the warning. The article does not currently have a Wikidata item so there is no Commons sitelink on Wikidata. The warning was added by Mike Peel in [13] but is wrong or misleading in this case. PrimeHunter (talk) 15:02, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Temporarilly saved edit-window

    I'm not going to explain myself very well, so apologies in advance. But when the aforementioned contents of an edit window is saved (cached?), is it saved server-side or by my machine?     @Serial Number 54129: What do you mean by "Temporarilly saved edit-window"? Which steps have you made when you think this situation occurs? If you click "Publish changes" and the save goes through then it is on Wikimedia servers and can be seen in the page history. If you click "Show preview" or are still writing the edit then it is not saved anywhere but only stored in the memory used by your browser. If it's also stored in the memory of a Wikimedia server then it cannot be retrieved there. It will be lost if the browser window or tab is closed. If you click a link in the browser to leave the edit window then your work may still be there if you click the browser back button. It depends on the browser.     Edit to "Pandemic"

    I take exception to an edit to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pandemic, specifically the last sentence of the top summary: "Current pandemics include COVID-19, HIV/AIDS, and racism[10]." This should be corrected to "Current pandemics include COVID-19 and HIV/AIDS".

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Infection establishes that the technical specificity of disease in medical terminology is an organism invading body tissues. While totally reprehensible - I'm all in there - the mention of racism is a pollution of this medical definition. Furthermore the YouTube link provided in the bottom citations leads to a link that starts with an ad.

    I created a user account to edit this but yet I am a neophyte as an editor.

    • Can I simply remove that part of the top statement and the bottom citation?

    @Jseeman: Thanks for your interest. "racism" was added 30 minutes before your post and has been reverted as unconstructive. You could simply have removed it and explained why in the edit summary box below the edit area. You could also have checked the page history and reverted the edit which added it. Inappropriate content like that is often recent vandalism and frequently (not in this case) part of other bad changes to the page. See Help:Reverting for how to revert edits with a few clicks.     Sending messages to project pages?

    I am curious about a recent post to Wikipedia:Village_pump_(miscellaneous). Apparently the announcement about the new Abstract Wikipedia project was delived to the VP via the mass message sender process. Is this normal? Can any page be the recipient of a mass message?     See mw:Extension:MassMessage#Configuration parameters. Talk namespaces are allowed by default. Wikimedia wikis add NS_PROJECT (the project namespace) to wgNamespacesToPostIn in https://noc.wikimedia.org/conf/highlight.php?file=InitialiseSettings.php. It also adds mainspace at meta:. The message at Wikipedia:Village pump (miscellaneous)#Announcing a new wiki project!     Two Articles Linking to Same Talk Page

    Due to some recent page moves and redirects, two different articles are linking to the same Talk page: Paixão and Paixão (film). The Talk page that comes up for both of them truly belongs to the second of those (the film). The Talk page that should appear for the first article (a TV show) was redirected a few months ago and I cannot figure out how to undo it.     @DonSpencer1: There are 26 references that are defined in the ref section but not used in the article. The first is named ref5. If the content from the ref isn't being used, it should be deleted.     Interlanguage links in random order

    I've noticed today that the interlanguage links are suddenly in a completely random order, whereas previously they were alphabetized according to native name of the language. I can't make out any rhyme or reason in the new ordering, which is completely different from one page to another. Sometimes Chinese comes first, or Welsh, or Walloon, or German. The order doesn't correspond to the English name of the language, or the native name, or the size of the speakership, or the size of the corresponding Wikipedia, or anything else I can imagine. It's just a totally random list. This is inconvenient, to say the least. Does anyone know why the interlanguage links are showing up this way, and if there is some setting I can change to restore an alphabetized order? Thanks. LANTZYTALK 23:48, 10 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Hi Pritam Shaw. Thanks for reaching out to to the help desk. The table that you are trying to edit on Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi#Series overview is not actually a fully customisable table. It's a template called {{Series overview}} which is used on many articles regarding television series. The template doesn't support adding background colour to individual cells at the moment so I'm afraid you are out of luck. You might want to read more about it at the template documentation.     The same way as you make the background of any other image transparent. If the image is a PNG, any reasonable image-editing software should be able to set a colour to transparent. If it's a JPG, I don't think it can be done, you'll need to convert it to PNG first. If it's an SVG, It should also be easy.      Done. The anti-aliasing in white (and a bit of pink) isn't good, but it's not too noticeable – it'll look worse if it's ever used on a dark background.     Moving page

    Please move Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 5 to "Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi (season 5)". The Infobox has a fault due to name, it displays "Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi 5" and again "Season 5". I tried it, but a page named "Fear Factor: Khatron Ke Khiladi (season 5)" already exists.     PrimeHunter, A lot of the sources are also saying 'khatron ke khiladi season 5'. I did a quick google search and and both of he terms are being used equally by the media. Most of the online streaming services refer to it as "khatron ke khiladi season 5/6 etc". The best bet for Pritam Shaw would be a move request or get input at Noticeboard for India-related topics.     Faulty links

    The list of shark attacks in Australia page goes to a page with a list of states.

    You expect to click in to the state and have a list of attacks for that state, but it just goes to a general info page about that state.

    Nothing about a list of shark attacks for each state.

    It needs fixing.

    You're asking about List of fatal shark attacks in Australia. It has a list of contents at the top. If you click on "Queensland", for example, then you're taken to the section about attacks in Queensland. This is indeed titled "Queensland" with what seems to me an unnecessary link to the article about Queensland; but I don't expect to see a list of fatal shark attacks by clicking that link, because the (chronological) list of fatal shark attacks is already on the screen in front of me, within the article I'm looking at.     Creating a page without a redlink

    Hello! I'm having trouble with creating a page and I need help. I want to create and set up a page for Beyoncé's new upcoming film, "Black Is King" - I was hoping to do this by creating a redlink on her page and using that. However, someone seems to have redirected the link, so when you search for "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Is_King" it redirects you to "https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Lion_King:_The_Gift#Black_Is_King" instead. I don't know how I am meant to create this page without using a redlink to set it up, and I don't know how to change the redirect link to a redlink.     Timeheist I would advise you to use Articles for Creation to create and submit a draft; if accepted, the reviewer will handle moving it to the main encyclopedia.
