== Green Grabbing/Johan Eliasch ==

I write to you with reference to the content of Green Grabbing:

The article in the Guardian by John Vidal is factually incorrect: Whilst I have bought 400,000 acres of land in the Amazonas, I have never asked any person to buy land in the Amazonas. Neither has Cool Earth ever sought or claimed to have bought land.

It is true that the Brazilian government have been critical of foreign buyers of rainforest, but I have never been accused by the Brazilian government to be a Green Grabber. Mr Vidal's article does not refer to me as a Green Grabber, and his definition of green grabbing extends to those who acquire rainforest for gain through carbon emission trading or eco-tourism, neither of which I have ever engaged in. My rainforest is purely for conservation purposes at great cost, and Cool Earth financially support local NGO’s with funding mainly for rainforest local community projects. By Vidal’s own definition I cannot be characterised as ‘Green Grabber’.

I have never, nor have I ever been accused of expunging indigenous or peasant communities from my land. To the opposite, I have made land available to local indigenous populations for their benefit to make livelihoods out harvesting fruits and nuts.

I hope I have explained why your post is factually incorrect, the inferences you draw from Vidal's article have no foundation, and is defamatory. Please kindly remove the reference to myself without delay.

Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)

Vague article made by bot in the Cebuano language

I'm sorry that I know nothing about editing wikipedia, but I do lots in OpenStreetMaps. Through the OsmAnd app I found this wiki article: [[1]]

It's an uninhabited archaeological site in North-East England. The page is written only in the Cebuano language of the Philippines and gives only very general data gleaned from geographical databases. It doesn't mention why the site is of interest, e.g. http://www.keystothepast.info/article/10339/Site-Details?PRN=D1840

I have been as close as the undergrowth would allow to this site in the last two months. The information in the article is irrelevant.

I will be happy to learn how to contribute to wikipedia, but I can't work out how to do it in a page written in Cebuano!

I apologise if this is not the right way to ask - I tried to find less demanding ways, but I'm naive to this. Thank you!--Spf43adx (talk) 03:12, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Here on the English Wikipedia, we have three articles with a similar name listed at Castlesteads. You are free to improve any of them. The Cebuano language article seems to be about a castle in County Durham, although we don't seem to have a corresponding article here. If you click on the coordinates in the Cebuano article and bring up a map, you find open fields but no castle. I have doubts about the accuracy of that article. Regardless, that is a matter for the Cebuano WP which is a separate project. MB 03:43, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)@Spf43adx: This is a surprisingly complicated situation. First, each Wikipedia it its own separate project, with separate administrators, policies, and guidelines. I do not know how OpenStreetMaps selects which Wikipedia language to use for any particular location. Next, the Cebuano Wikipedia is one of the largest by article count, because its administrator(s) choose to use mass machine translations of articles from (at least) the English Wikipedia, with almost no validation of the result. This is the help desk for the English Wikipedia. -Arch dude (talk) 03:49, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Arch dude, I said that in a tweet, and was corrected: it's a bot, but not machine translation. https://twitter.com/LarsXensen/status/1298422703859404802?s=20 (and linked article on vice.com). --ColinFine (talk) 10:32, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I enjoyed reading this question/alert: it's so un-humdrum. Here is a list of editors of English-language Wikipedia who say that they're proficient in Cebuano. Each may or may not edit Cebuano-language Wikipedia too. You might choose one who seems "active" (one whose list of "contributions" shows recent edits here) and informally bring up the matter on their talk page. -- Hoary (talk) 06:33, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
PS I took a look. Well, half those people haven't contributed in years, and the selection was simple. Pinging Emperork! Emperork, I see that you're a (very!) rare contributor to ceb:Wikipedia, but perhaps you could comment on might have happened in ceb:Castle Steads. (And if you can't ... well, I just hope that this mystery fascinates you as much as it fascinates me.) -- Hoary (talk) 08:26, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Pinging the main author of the Castle Steads article @Lsj:, who answers questions in English on their Cebuano talk page ceb:Hisgot_sa_Gumagamit:Lsj. There is also an embassy page at ceb:Hisgot sa Wikipedia:Embahada which I found by looking at the Ceb Wikipedia main page and which should be able to answer questions on Ceb Wikipedia in English. TSventon (talk) 11:56, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
My guess is that the Cebuano Wikipedia generated ceb:Castle Steads from sv:Castle Steads, since that is the only other Wikipedia in the Castle Steads Wikidata item. -Arch dude (talk) 16:31, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
According to the article I linked above, the bot generates articles directly from Wikidata. --ColinFine (talk) 16:40, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@ColinFine: Based on that article, I think the Lsjbot started with data from GeoNames and added both the Swedish and Cebuano articles. The existence of the articles then caused magic to occur to produce the Wikidata item. Reading Google's translation into English of the Swedish article, it looks like the entire article (except for the initial incorrect assertion of the existence of an actual castle) can be generated from the geolocation alone. -Arch dude (talk) 16:59, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for pinging me @Hoary:. About this one @Spf43adx:, yes I am proficient with Cebuano and checked the article (I rarely contribute though in CEB WP). I found the same observations with what was mentioned above. Let me know how I can help to sort it out. Cheers! — Emperork (talk) 18:55, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I think this this query could be retitled "Cebuano Wikipedia" to make it easier to find information on ceb wiki in the Helpdesk archive.
@Emperork:, @Lsj:, what should en wiki editors do if they find an error in a bot written article in ceb wiki (or sv wiki)? In this case the ceb and sv articles seem to have been based on an error in (or misinterpretation of) Geonames.
@Spf43adx:, if you wanted to add a mention of Castle Steads to en wiki, there is an existing article on Esh Winning. I haven't seen enough information to justify a stand alone article. TSventon (talk) 21:55, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I can offer to rewrite (to correct) it on the ceb wiki should there be enough references provided by Spf43adx (talk · contribs). I rarely contribute there though and I'm not sure if editors/administrator there are still active. — Emperork (talk) 22:20, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I would suggest deleting the ceb and sv articles and the wikidata item unless Spf43adx really wants to write an article. Alternatively, if they wrote one or more sentences (with reference(s)) then the first sentence of each article could be replaced. TSventon (talk) 23:17, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm very grateful for the responses. It's not OpenStreetMaps itself that selected this Wikipedia article, but the OsmAnd project, a mobile app for OpenStreetMap. It can download abbreviated Wikipedia articles for points of interest for use offline. I have no knowledge of Castle Steads, County Durham, beyond the extra link I posted and that I can confirm there is no significant structure above ground apart from nettles preventing one from getting close! Spf43adx (talk) 02:48, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Spf43adx:, In this case I would suggest deleting the articles as I don't think ceb wiki or sv wiki need an article about a field of nettles in England. More generally ceb wiki has a lot of bot written articles like this one so OsmAnd should probably consider not downloading ceb wiki articles outside the Philippines. Wikipedia is based on information found in reliable sources, not on original research by editors, so any changes to articles need to be referenced to a reliable source. The detailed rules vary from project to project as we have seen. TSventon (talk) 08:36, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Editing: citing a book; volume #  ???

The cite book template in the edit box does not have a "volume" field, yet a huge number of reference works are multi-volume. E.g. Encyclopedia Britannica, in which each volume begins with page 1. There are 20 different pages 1, 100 200, etc. in my copy. Am I missing something? Is there a volume field? Am I expected to understand that I should put "823a vol. 3" in the page field? Nick Beeson (talk) 17:40, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Nwbeeson since you specifically mentioned Encyclopedia Brittanica, I'll first point out the existence of {{Cite encyclopedia}}, which does have a volume field. That's what I would use to cite an encyclopedia, were I to do so (although as a tertiary source it should be avoided - but there are times we use it). But more to your point, {{Cite book}} does have a volume field. It's just not one of the fields that's included in the version you get from the drop down box above the edit window. The full set of (largely optional) parameters for Cite book is {{cite book |last1= |first1= |author-link1= |last2= |first2= |author-link2= |last3= |first3= |author-link3= |last4= |first4= |author-link4= |last5= |first5= |author-link5= |display-authors= |author-mask1= |author-mask2= |author-mask3= |author-mask4= |author-mask5= |last-author-amp= |translator-last1= |translator-first1= |translator-link1= |translator-last2= |translator-first2= |translator-link2= |display-translators= |translator-mask1= |translator-mask2= |date= |year= |orig-year= |chapter= |script-chapter= |trans-chapter= |chapter-url= |chapter-format= |editor1-last= |editor1-first= |editor1-link= |editor2-last= |editor2-first= |editor2-link= |editor3-last= |editor3-first= |editor3-link= |editor4-last= |editor4-first= |editor4-link= |editor5-last= |editor5-first= |editor5-link= |display-editors= |title= |script-title= |trans-title= |url= |url-status= |url-access= |format= |type= |series= |language= |volume= |others= |edition= |location= |publisher= |publication-date= |page= |pages= |at= |nopp= |arxiv= |asin= |bibcode= |doi= |doi-broken-date= |isbn= |ismn= |issn= |jfm= |jstor= |lccn= |mr= |oclc= |ol= |osti= |pmc= |pmid= |rfc= |ssrn= |zbl= |id= |archive-url= |archive-date= |access-date= |via= |lay-url= |lay-source= |lay-date= |lay-format= |quote= |name-list-format= |mode= |postscript= |ref=}}C You obviously don't need all of those for all books, so the version from the drop down box only gives you the most commonly used ones. Just add <nowiki>|volume=3 into the template and it should work.~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 20:25, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I have been editing for a very long time and am completely familiar with {{cite book}}. My question was, "Why is it not in the 'Edit' page Citation pop-up for books. I thought I might be missing something obvious. Nick Beeson (talk) 15:10, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Automatic translations

Wikipedia partners with Google Translate (https://wikimediafoundation.org/news/2019/01/09/you-can-now-use-google-translate-to-translate-articles-on-wikipedia/ ) and the Malaysian bahasa translation is just largely created through automatic translators. Users are not yet necessary and they have started to be selected not on the basis of personal ethics and engagement in the project, but something like personal opinions and competencies. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 78.14.138.79 (talk) 17:43, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! This is the help desk for the English Wikipedia, not for other language projects. You are referring to WP:CXT which is a tool for translating articles between wikis, but only uses Google translate as a guide. As with all wikis, they are editable by everyone - but CXT requires some additional experience. Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 17:47, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Q Article suggestion for Tasmania-based skincare brand Beauty and the Bees (3 references cited)

    Hello,

I'm a paid part-time employee of Beauty and the Bees (and its men's line Professor Fuzzworthy), an Australian zero-waste hair and skincare company based in Hobart, Tasmania. Founded in 1993, the company has an international market that includes the U.S. Its products have been reviewed in GQ1, NY Magazine2 and other U.S./international publications. The company has also be cited by Warren Buffett's Business Week3 as a leader in the growing zero-waste shampoo market. Another point of interest is that Founder/CEO Jill Saunders is a long-term entrepreneur who received a late-in-life diagnosis of autism (Asperger Syndrome).

As a pioneering leader in zero-waste skincare and user of natural ingredients (90% or more--including Leatherwood Honey/Beeswax, Goat's Milk, lavender and dozens of essential oils used in their products are sourced from Tasmania), Beauty and the Bees should have a Wikipedia entry of its own, similar to Ethique ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethique ).

I realize that as an employee, it would be a conflict of interest for me to write the article and my understanding is that it's considered unethical to hire an outside writer to create the entry. What are our best options for developing an article that meets Wikipedia's standards w/o a conflict of interest?

    Andymsmith (talk) 19:33, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Andysmith Two options:
    1. Post those three sources (and any others you are aware of) on Wikipedia:Requested articles/Business and economics/Companies/A-E#B. It should be in alphabetical order by the name of the company. Be aware that volunteers write the articles that interest them, there are limited numbers of volunteers interested in writing about companies on that list, the more reliable sources provided the easier the article will be to write (therefore the more likely someone is to write it), and going that route may take quite a long time (some article requests have been on there for several years).
    2. Declare your status as a paid editor following the directions provided at that link, then submit a draft through the articles for creation process. Be aware that writing an article from scratch is the hardest thing to do well on Wikipedia. Your article must demonstrate that Beauty and the Bees meets the criteria listed at WP:NCORP, and it must be written in a neutral point of view. It must not sound like a press release, advertisement, or anything that promotes the company or portrays it in an excessively positive (or negative) light. If you are going to go that route, I recommend you spend some time looking at and reading articles in Category:FA-Class company articles, as they represent Wikipedia's best work on articles about companies.
    Whichever route you take, I wish you luck. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 19:46, 28 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

In the Saint Urho article, click on the interlanguage link for its Finnish version, and ask (in English) for help on the talk page there. The chance of a Finnish editor speaking English is quite high. Maproom (talk) 06:56, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I had a look at that ode, and the Finnish language words there are so badly mangled they're barely recognisable. The ode is going to be rather difficult to translate even for native Finnish speakers. JIP | Talk 12:15, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It's not Finnish - it's cod English, apart from the first few words, which appear to be a mangling of "yksi kaksi kolme (neljä) vii(si)" ("one two three (four) five"). --ColinFine (talk) 15:35, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You got it! and thanks a lot. I'm from Minnesota and there are a lot of Finns that came from "the old country" to work in the iron mines in northern Minnesota. My Slovenian grandparents were from that generation so my friends and I were third generation. First generation Finns were looked down on by the Slovenians and even the Swedes but by the time my generation was growing up it had become sort of cool to be Finnish. So I did not actually hear the language spoken much, but I still knew how it sounded and how the accent sounded from Finnish jokes and old Finnish tales when told at events and such. As for the counting, I guessed that that is what those words meant because I'd heard them from Finnish classmates and all these years later it sort of rang a bell. Except for the first line I had no trouble at all in understanding all the words--and actually the authors did a darn good job of making it sound exactly as one would hear a person with a heavy Finnish accent speak them. I know what feelia and kala moyakka are. The soup is good but I'm not up to eating the fish eyes and the feelia is the most awful stuff imaginable. Perhaps I should translate the poem at the Saint Urho article since I thought it was easy enough, but apparently not. Thanks to all that have answered. Gandydancer (talk) 04:19, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I did the translation and it can be read at the article TP. I had hoped to add it to the article using the method used at the To A Mouse page but could not figure out how to do it. Can anyone here do that? Gandydancer (talk) 11:59, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I am not convinced a translation is needed, but I have formatted the texts on the article talk page. TSventon (talk) 12:46, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Intersection Observer alternative

    Hi!

Wikipedia recently changed the way lazy loading is implemented. It now makes use of the Intersection Observer API.

Many devices (for example all iOS devices below 12.2) do not support this API, which renders wikipedia almost unusable to read certain types of articles, particularly math related, since the fallback solution has the user tap a tiny tiny grey box for every image in the article. When it comes to math a single character in a sentence might be an image.

This is quite sad, since it changes wikipedia from the fastest and most reliable source of information, to a website you only visit if you don’t have any other options.

Is there any way to make wikipedia usable again on older devices? Maybe a way to disable lazy loading altogether, or make wikipedia use the old algorithm which actually worked? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 90.129.217.229 (talkcontribs) 2020-08-29T10:29:38 (UTC)

I'm editing Draft:Jatbula_Trail and it seems like I can use this image from flickr: https://www.flickr.com/photos/theholygrail/19631300499/ It's not my image but it has CC BY 2.0 licensing. Awb replace moving one line forward

I'm a AWB bot user but I'm not so skilled. I need to insert in some pages a text in the last line before the categories line so I though to replace the string "category:xxxx with: the "text", the breaking line code and the string "category:xxxx" again. The question is which code use to move one line forward in replacement? Thanks a lot. Regards--Pierpao (talk) 11:19, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Pierpao: I'm not sure if I understand but if you want to insert "foo" above "[[Category A]]", you replace (using regexes) "\[\[\s*Category A\s*\]\]" with "foo\n\[\[Category A\]\]" (without the quotes). —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 11:43, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Historical populations template formatting

On the Dushanbe article which I have been working on recently I've had an issue with the historical populations template for the population section. I can see from the template page that you can put general references at the bottom, but is there a way to put the references right next to the year as there would be with the table? (this is because the population data comes from many different sources and it would be helpful to specify next to the year which sources refers to which year) I've kept the redundant table just to keep the references referring to a specific year. Which is the better document to cite?

A reference has recently been added to an article (Cadaver Synod) which I monitor, and I'd like to format it using the appropriate citation template. However, I'm not sure which source to use. The reference article was originally published in a popular magazine, and is stored in the University of Georgia's "Digital Commons" archive. There are three possibilities:

    1. The article formatted as a PDF [2]. This (bare URL) is the current reference in our article.
    2. A link to the university archive page [3]. This is the URL given in the formatted article as a recommended citation. It does not, however, give the text of the article.
    3. The original magazine article [4]. This is linked from the archive page, but is less easy to read than the reformatted article and contains irrelevant material.

Any advice would be appreciated. Tevildo (talk) 18:19, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Tevildo. In my view, the important part of citation is the bibliographic information: title, author, date, where published. A URL is a convenience for the reader, not an integral part of the citation (except in the case of source which exists only as a website). It makes sense then to link to the most readily readable copy - provided that that copy is not itself a copyright violation, and preferably is hosted somewhere reliable. --ColinFine (talk) 19:11, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Tevildo: You reference the magazine, since that is where it was published. You then use the link to the PDF as the convenience URl as Colin said. -Arch dude (talk) 19:36, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the information, I've used the PDF link (#1 above). Tevildo (talk) 20:35, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Tevildo: (Note that 1 and 3 are the same document.) Since the PDF is not necessarily "easiest to read" on all platforms, I like to include the link to the HTML page with the abstract as well as the PDF, which also sometimes provides a level of redundancy. I'd go with:
    {{Cite ... |url= ... /fac_pm/42 |url-status=live |archive-url=the PDF URL |archive-date=2001-10-31

    Article Title Edit

    Hello,

I am working on editing the biography of Lawrence Hurst and I am having trouble editing the title of the page. Whomever made it used the shortened name "Larry" instead of Lawrence. I think for a formal article it is best to use the persons full name in the title. How can I change this?

thanks, B — Preceding unsigned comment added by BWMcCoy (talkcontribs) 18:51, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, we use the name by which the subject is most commonly known. If he's usually called "Larry", then that's what the article will be titled. See Bill Clinton or (more subtly) Gerald Ford (formally Gerald Rudolph Ford Jr., but born Leslie Lynch King Jr.). --Orange Mike | Talk 18:56, 29 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Adding different meaning to existing entry

Hi, the page for "Citizens Councils" reflects only the White Supremacy historic explanation for the term, we want to add a contemporary one, about new Citizens' Councils based on participatory democracy. How can we structure this new, added and VERY different entry under the same name? Thanks a lot! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Collaboration Geek (talkcontribs) 15:34, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

First, you would have to establish that the new concept is actually notable enough to merit an encyclopedia entry. Then, you would have to create an entirely new article, under a title such as Citizens' Councils (participatory democracy). The next step would be to put a hatnote on the main article, saying something like "This article is about the white supremacist organizations. For the 21st-century participatory democracy movement, see Citizens' Councils (participatory democracy)" and vice versa. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:41, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Numbered list with paragraphs between the examples

Hi, I was wondering if there is any way to have a numbered list whose numbers start where a previous list left off. What I mean is something like what I've put in italics below, but where the kangaroo examples are labeled 3 and 4 instead of 1 and 2. If this is possible, it would be enormously useful for example formatting in articles about linguistics.

Blah blah blah here are two English sentences:

    1. Every farmer who owns a donkey beats it.
    2. A farmer who owns a donkey beats it.

Blah blah blah here are two more English sentences:

    1. If Kangaroos didn't have tails, they would topple over.
    2. If Kangaroos didn't have tails but did have jetpacks, they wouldn't topple over.

    Botterweg14 (talk) 17:44, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Botterweg14: Check out Help:List#Paragraphs_inside_list_items and some of the other examples on that help page. It shows how to do what you are trying. RudolfRed (talk) 17:58, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hey, thanks for the answer! That would work as a hackey solution, but often in practice this will be substantial amounts of text between the items. I worry that using that trick will complicate the markup, making it much harder to edit (especially for newcomers). Is that the only option? Botterweg14 (talk) 18:14, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That's the only way I know of do to what you're asking. Alternatively, you could restructure the text so that the blah blah blah part is not needed in the list itself, but either before or after it or in a paragraph elsewhere. RudolfRed (talk) 19:34, 30 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Botterweg14: I often see broken # lists and other problems related to auto-numbering. If there is a need to refer to an item number in other text in the article (as is likely the case in this example), or if they need to match a source, it's important that those numbers not change. Other editors will often come along and insert or remove items, or accidentally insert line breaks, causing the numbering to break. Most numbered lists are fairly short and it's not such a big deal to manually number them, which avoids these issues. Additionally, I often see numbered lists that should, instead, be bullet lists or tables because the numbers (which imply order or ranking) are not meaningful and/or not in the sources (i.e., they are effectively WP:OR, and may imply order that is not true or in the source). —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 02:06, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
That's a very good point. So it sounds like what I'm looking for really isn't possible with the current wikipedia resources. Is this something that could be developed? I imagine it wouldn't be too difficult, though I don't know much about how wikimarkup works under the hood. (Maybe the mechanism used for references could be adapted?). Botterweg14 (talk) 02:19, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Botterweg14: Not exactly, but my point was that automatic numbering has limited use in a Wikipedia article, and that it usually makes more sense to number items manually, if at all. Having said that, I did the following with {{Ordered list}}:

Blah blah blah here are two English sentences:

    1. Every farmer who owns a donkey beats it.
    2. A farmer who owns a donkey beats it.

Blah blah blah here are two more English sentences:

    1. If Kangaroos didn't have tails, they would topple over.
    2. If Kangaroos didn't have tails but did have jetpacks, they wouldn't topple over.

You still have to manually set the |start= parameter (after the first group) to the correct starting value for the group. There may be things (some other templates, etc.) that don't work well when wrapped in the template, either. I'd suggest just numbering them manually (or not at all if the numbers have no meaning and you don't need to refer to them by number). —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 08:00, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks again! I really appreciate your help. In many cases, number isn't really necessary, but especially in longer sections it would be extremely useful as a means of referring back to examples without using phrasing that "breaks the fourth wall". Is there a place where I could request development of such a tool or is that just not how things work? Botterweg14 (talk) 12:38, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well, it would be nice to have such a tool that would be able to keep track of numbering throughout an article – not just of example sentences in linguistics, but also of mathematical expressions or diagrams in science articles. I don't know of any tool that does that, and from my own limited experience of tinkering I don't think one can be created. At least not as a template (because for it to work each invocation of a template will need to store a variable to be accessed by the next instance of the template, but that's impossible as each invocation of a template on a page is processed independently of the others). This should be achievable from the software side though (recall how well the mediawiki engine keeps track of reference numbers?), so an extension can probably be created by the developers (who knows, maybe one exists already). Regardless, the next place to pose this question would be Wikipedia:Village pump (technical), that should definitely solicit feedback from people with more technical experience than me. – Uanfala (talk) 13:07, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to create an article if there's a red link that can let me write an essay. — Preceding unsigned comment added by CatchSlab2021 (talkcontribs) 02:18, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Click on it, add your content, and then save. Viriditas (talk) 02:46, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@CatchSlab2021: However, you should probably go ahead and use the "articles for creation" process (see WP:YFA) and create a draft instead. the draft will get the attention of reviewers who will help you get it into good shape. Once the draft is accepted, they will move it into main space, which will turn that read link blue. Make a note on the talk page of the draft that the red link is already there and that your draft is about that subject and not another subject of the same name. -Arch dude (talk) 03:28, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Category lists

My talk page was listed in a blocked users category, months back. The block was removed. Naturally I cannot edit the list - how do I update the category list which still includes my page? GerixAu (talk) 04:44, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Gerixau: I'm puzzled. With this edit, you added Category:Indefinitely blocked Wikipedians to your talk page. A couple of minutes later, you changed it to Category:Wikipedians who are indefinitely blocked for a violation of the Terms of Use. I imagine that means you can remove it from User talk:Gerixau#March 2020 yourself (remove the category from that section by editing it). —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 05:36, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Article Publishing.

Hello, I would like to know. How long does it take for an article to be published? As I've created an article more then 15 days and still shows as draft. Draft:Webclift Airways — Preceding unsigned comment added by Heathrow0003 (talkcontribs) 07:12, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Heathrow0003: Your draft has not been submitted for review, but I'm afraid it would surely be rejected. Wikipedia articles are created for notable subjects, summarizing what independent, reliable sources have written about the subject. Multiple such sources must exist, and their coverage must be substantial, not just passing mentions. The only source that has been cited in your draft is the proposed airline's own website and Google search for "Webclift Airways" returns exactly two results (highly unusual for Google), both to that same website. Please see the links above, as well as WP:TOOSOON, WP:NOTDIRECTORY, and WP:NOTPROMO. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 07:39, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ref number 1 is all wrong - I know I have tried not to annoy you but this is serious - I need you to do this. Sorry and thanks 175.33.139.143 (talk) 09:31, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    "Missing or empty |title=" —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 10:25, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
To refresh your memory (as you have been told on countless occasions), at the top of this Help Desk page it says "If you have comments about a specific article, use that article's talk page." In this case the talk page for Public Schools Club is at Talk:Public Schools Club. A further reminder that where the error message includes the word "help" in blue, this leads you to specific help for the error in question, in this case Help:CS1_errors#citation missing title. --David Biddulph (talk) 10:36, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
To the OP, your help is appreciated, but it is long past the time where you should learn how to do these things yourself, or at least make edit requests on the appropriate article talk pages. 331dot (talk) 10:41, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I knew in my heart that you would be annoyed. Honestly, I think that putting a message for help on the article's talk page is not a good idea, no one looks at that. I cannot see where to put the "missing title", I won't edit again, as I've promised before. I am, however, proud of the editing I did on this article, so I can only hope that someone can repair the bad citation I did for ref number 1. Sorry again 175.33.139.143 (talk) 12:32, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I don't recall saying that I was annoyed, and I do not feel annoyed. Nor have you been asked to never edit again. I'm trying to help you to help yourself. If you mark a talk page message as a formal edit request, it will be seen by other editors, as it appears in a category of such requests. 331dot (talk) 12:36, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You have made many edits where you have managed to include a title within the reference. You are familiar with the idea of parameters. I.e. the 'markup' |xxx=. Add |title= and include the title after the equals sign but before the next pipe. Eagleash (talk) 12:48, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    1000 ha. or square kilometre.

Hello! I've been reading on the page List of countries by forest area. I might add the 2020 numbers someday but there's two different methods of writing the amount of forest area, one table uses numbers by 1000 ha., and the other two tables list them by square kilometre. And there might be even other methods used in Wikipedia. Which of these should be used per Wikipedia guidelines? Thanks in advance. Aquatic Ambiance (talk) 09:34, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Importing images from Wikimedia Commons to Wikipedia articles.

    Hi Wikipedia Help Desk,

I'm just wondering, how do you import/transfer image files from Wikimedia Commons into a Wikipedia article? I'm relatively new to Wikipedia, and it would be quite helpful and useful to know! I have also (accidently and unknowingly) received some copyright strikes from other Wikipedia users, regarding some images I have copied from the internet, and pasted them into relevant to articles, to help readers with explaining what the article is referring to, by giving them visual cues, which sometimes help to clarify or justify, and give some sense or meaning to the relevant article. Problem is, those images were promptly taken down, and those images were flagged as copyrighted, which is unfortunate, because I thought those were great images, and I didn't mean any harm by adding them. My intentions were good, and I want to be constructive with my edits, and help improve Wiki articles.

    Thanks, Davism0703 (talk) 10:53, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Davism0703: If you find an image at Commons that you wish to use, you will see a link in the toolbar in the upper middle part of the Commons page (by the Wikipedia logo) a link to 'use this file on a Wiki' clicking on that will provide you with a pre-formatted link to use on Wikipedia pages. If using in an infobox add in the 'image = ' parameter but do not use any formatting just 'XXXX.jpg'.
Please do not use external images; as you have found out, Wikipedia takes copy-vio rather seriously and infringing same can land you in difficulty! Cheers. Eagleash (talk)

Question on "Discussion procedure on merging Wikipedia articles"

Good afternoon. I would like to ask a question relevant to the Wikipedia: Merging.

It has been suggested that Ventilative cooling be merged into Passive cooling.

I would like to oppose to this merge proposal since the 2 topics appear similar but are different and they should be left as separate articles.

My problem is that the suggested merge appears only in the Passive cooling & Ventilative cooling main articles, and there is no specific section in the Talk:Passive cooling.

Should I create a new section Merge proposal in the Talk:Passive cooling to oppose to this proposal and start a discussion?

Thank you in advance for your help M.Caps79 (talk) 11:24, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@M.Caps79: Yes, the merge tags should have contained a link to a discussion (see WP:MERGEPROP). You are quite welcome to start the discussion and it may be an idea to ping the editor who proposed the merger so they can give their reasoning. Eagleash (talk) 11:41, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    @Eagleash:Thank you for your help! I will proceed as proposed. M.Caps79 (talk) 13:00, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Article for Review

My account name is SilverStylus. On August 28 at about 3:00 p.m. EST, I attempted to submit for review an article on the subject Elizabeth Whiteley. The yellow box appeared and at the bottom of it advised me to move the article. I pressed the move link, in blue, and everything disappeared. I can't find a tracker to know whether the article is in the review queue. Could you please check? Is it in the queue? Or, did I accidentally delete it and should I start again? Many thanks for your help and advice. Also, as a former librarian, I deeply appreciate Wikipedia.

    SilverStylus (talk) 14:28, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

SilverStylus Your account edit history indicates no edits (visible or deleted) about that topic. If you did create such a draft, you never clicked "publish changes"(which should be understood to simply mean "save changes") or submitted it for a review, or you created the draft under a different account. 331dot (talk) 14:32, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Personal Profile

    Good day Wikipedia Team

I hope this message finds you well.

I would like to know if one is allowed to provide you with individual and company business people for marketing purposes, to be published via Wikipedia.

    Kindly advise requirements and process.

Your kind cooperation is greatly appreciated.

Wikipedia is not for promotional purposes and has nothing to do with any marketing efforts. 331dot (talk) 15:46, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, but no. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia (see WP:NOT), and has articles on subjects that are notable (WP:N)) by our definition. You should look for appropriate social media sites or business sites instead. -Arch dude (talk) 15:49, 31 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Green Grabbing/Johan Eliasch

    Johan Eliasch
