The 2022 New York gubernatorial election will take place on November 8, 2022.

Democratic Governor Kathy Hochul, has announced that she plans to seek election to her current post in 2022. Governor Hochul was elected lieutenant governor in 2014 and again in 2018, and became governor on August 24, 2021 following the resignation of her predecessor, Governor Andrew Cuomo.[1] Democratic Attorney General Letitia James is also running and will challenge Hochul in the primaries. Democratic New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams has formed an exploratory committee in anticipation of a potential primary challenge to Governor Hochul, and other Democrats are considering running for governor as well.

On the Republican side, U.S. Representative Lee Zeldin from Long Island is running for governor and has received the support of the state's party leadership. Other Republicans, including Andrew Giuliani and former Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino, have also launched gubernatorial bids.

Democratic primary

In August 2021, after Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced his resignation, then-Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul announced that she would run for governor in 2022.[2] Hochul was sworn in as governor of New York on August 24, 2021.[3] Governor Hochul was elected to the position of lieutenant governor in 2014 and was re-elected in 2018; in both elections, she was Cuomo's running mate.[4]

Republican primary

In June of 2020, Lewis County sheriff Mike Carpinelli became the first Republican to enter the race.[30] He was the only announced challenger until Long Island congressman Lee Zeldin announced his own campaign in April of 2021, who announced by the end of the month that the Erie and Niagara Counties' Republican Party chairs had endorsed his campaign, giving him the necessary 50% of state committee support to gain the Republican nomination.[31][32] Andrew Giuliani and 2014 New York gubernatorial nominee Rob Astorino made campaign announcements the following month.[33][34][35] Contractor and podcast host Derrick Gibson is also in the race.[36] In June 2021, Zeldin was named the 'presumed nominee' of the New York's Republican Party by state chairman Nick Langworthy after he earned 85 percent of a straw poll vote of county leaders, and was also called the 'presumptive nominee' of New York's Conservative Party by Conservative state chairman Gerard Kassar.[37][38] As of October 2021, Zeldin has the endorsement of 56 of New York's 62 county Republican committees.[39]
