Amroha (Hindi: अमरोहा, Urdu: امروہہ) is a town in the northwestern Uttar Pradesh state in northern India. It is the administrative headquarters of the Jyotiba Phule Nagar district. Amroha is located west-northwest of Moradabad, on the Sot River.

Etymology

The name of Amroha may derive from its production of mangoes (aam) and fish (rohu; literally translated into mangoes and fishes. Or it may come from the Sanskrit saying, aamr vanam meaning mango forest.

Geography

Amroha is located at 28°55′N 78°28′E / 28.92°N 78.47°E / 28.92; 78.47.[1] It has an average elevation of 211 metres (692 feet). Amroha is connected by rail with Moradabad and Delhi. And it also connected with national highway 24.

History

One reason is also given in the book ‘Basic Bhogal’ for class III, that is old name was ‘AZEEZPUR’. When Sharfuddin Shah Wilayat came to Amroha, so old inhabitants of this region presented his ‘Rohu’ a kind of fish found in ponds of amroha, so he named this region as ‘Amroh’ which later on became Amroha. Historical sources are silent about the rulers of Amroha in the period of Ancient India.

Some derive ‘Amroha from the Sanskrit word ‘Amrovanam’, the region of mangoes’. Yet another etymology traces the word back to Raja Amarjoda of the Bansi dynasty, who in 474 B.C., named the region Amroha. The author of Tarikh-i-Amroha, records that Amroha was ruled by Rajputs between 676 A. D. and 1141 A.D. and this is all the information we have. In contrast, references to Amroha abound in the documents of the medieval period and its chronicles. Salar Masood Ghazi conquered Amroha is 589 A. H. 1193 A. D. Sultan Shamsuddin Iltutmish (1211-36) appointed a muqta at vilayat e Amroha, but no date is supplied for this appointment by Minhaj in his work Tabaqat-i-Nasiri. Behram Shah (1240-42) appointed Malik Jalaluddin as the hakim of Amroha in 1242 A.D. Ghiyasuddin Balban (1266-87) crushed a rebellion in this region, and so ruthless was his repression that the territory of Badaun and Amroha remained peaceful till the region of Jalaludding Khilji (1290-96).During the region of Kaiqubad (1287-90) Ambar Sultan build a mosque at Amroha in 1287 A.D. from this we can deduce that Sultani held a position of responsibility there.

The earliest arrival of Muslims in Amroha was associated with Sultan Mahmood Ghaznavi in 1192. The dargah, or tomb, of Sufi saint Hazrat Sharfuddin Shah Wilayat is located in Amroha. Hazrat migrated from Wasti, Iraq via Multan. The dargah stands in a large enclosure filled with graves of his descendants. A legend says that within the temple area scorpions inflict no harm.

Citizens of Amroha are predominantly Muslim Naqvis& Taqvi, tracing their lineage back to Hazrat Sharfuddin Shah Wilayat. Hazrat was a direct desendant of Imam Ali Al-Naqi), a highly respected religious figure in India during the early development of Islam in the Indian subcontinent.

During the Partition, similar to other cities in northern India, many Muslim residents migrated to Pakistan, either by force or choice.

Demographics

As of the 2001 India census,[2] Amroha's population was 2,64,890. Men constituted 53% of the population and females comprised 47%. Amroha's average literacy rate was 44%, lower than the national average of 59.5%; 59% of the males and 41% of females were literate. 15% of the population is under 6 years of age.

Economy

Amroha is known for its mangoes; more than 1200 varieties of mangoes grow in Amroha[3]. Industries include carpet manufacturing, wood handicrafts, and small scale production of cotton cloth.

Amroha is a marketplace for agricultural produce. Its main industries are pottery making, hand-loom weaving, and sugar milling.

Society

Muslims constitute 70% of the population. Both Sunni and Shi'a Muslims celebrates festivals. Eid ,Shab-e-Barat ,Shab-e-Meraj are the popular festivals of Muslims. Sunnis on the occasion of Milad Un Nabi bring out large processions. Shi'as largely gather in the city for Moharram processions.
