so thers no deletion log? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alexsmith44 (talk • contribs) 01:12, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, the deletion log entry is here but it just says "see WP:AN/I". I thought you had seen that but were wondering why it had been deleted since that log entry is not very informative. So I simply checked who created the category, went to the history of WP:AN/I for the same day as the deletion, and searched for the user's name being mentioned.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 01:28, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
can someone send me the article text? I'm doing a report on this subject for a college class and i want to cite some of the films —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alexsmith44 (talk • contribs) 02:26, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- There was no article and there was no text. This was a category. Categories work by creating a category title and then the category is populated by people placing articles into the category by posting the code into articles that fit within the category. In other words, a category page has no content itself, other than possibly a description of what it's for, instructions, subcategories and the like. To give you an example, take a look (quite at random) at Category:Slide guitarists. It has 114 articles listed. Now see what content (or, actually lack of content) makes up that category page itself, here. The upshot of this is that if there are no articles that have the category placement code in them at any given time, it's very difficult to later reconstruct what articles were in the category when it existed. Here, the only way I can think of to ferret out any information on what was in the category, prior to deletion, is to look at the edits of the category creator to see what that person placed into it. This has no mileage here, since this category was deleted exactly 1 hour 55 minutes after it was created.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:23, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
so if it was a category wouldn't it list films just like Category:Slide guitarists. lists guitars? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Alexsmith44 (talk • contribs) 05:44, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- Yes it would list films, but as was sort of described above, the list isn't actually stored anywhere. The software that runs Wikipedia simply displays in the category all of the articles that contain a particular string of characters. Thus, the category has no retrievable history whatsoever. If I went to all of the articles in the Slide guitarists category, and removed the category text from their source code, you would have literally no way of finding out what used to be in the category without knowing who removed the articles from it. Your best bet would be to find another website with the information, or see if there are cached versions of the page on a web archive that predates the deletion. Userpage problem
Hello, I've recently started editing again, and unfortunately, have forgotten alot of what I learnt! I made a new userpage, but for some reason, the links in my userboxes are not clickable. I'm guessing it's something to do with the image I am using on my userpage. Would anyone be able to help me fix it? Thanks alot if so. -- Jack?! 01:15, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- Oh and I need to give thanks to Sonia who gave me the inspiration and permission to create such a userpage! Just wish I could fix it now.. -- Jack?! 01:21, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- The userbox links are clickable for me. Have you tried clearing your cache? Deor (talk) 13:17, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- It seems to be a Firefox problem. When viewing the page in IE, it's fine. Didn't think to try that. Thanks anyway! Not much more I can do. -- Jack?! 17:38, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- I was messing around with it in preview mode, and for some reason the problem is somewhere in the stack of divs between the rollback icon and <center> tag. My guess is a DIV is overlapping the userbox table. If I were you I would try tinkering with it or using another method to achieve the effect you want. AJCham 17:50, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Reporting a suspected "sockpuppet"
I think I've found a banned user who has been using multiple accounts. The edits from these accounts are nearly identical based on this sockpuppet investigation. I left a message with the editor who originally reported him (User:Snigbrook) and the administrator who closed the case (User:Tim Song). Neither have responded but I notice registered users have asked Tim Song to investigate suspected sockpuppets. Is there somewhere else I can bring this up or can I only report sockpuppets if I am a registered editor? 72.74.206.197 (talk) 04:28, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- I help out in that area from time to time. Who is the editor you suspect and can you provide diffs as evidence? TNXMan 11:44, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
Here are the three I've come across.
All of these accounts removed cited statements, blanked further reading and reference sections or simply redirected articles like here. If you look through Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Mynameisstanley/Archive these edits seem to follow the same exact pattern right down to the edit summaries and one-word userpage messages. 72.74.199.90 (talk) 13:02, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- This does look suspicious. I have opened Wikipedia:Sockpuppet investigations/Mynameisstanley and requested a CU look in to this, as previous checks have revealed a lot of sock accounts. TNXMan 13:17, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
Allowance of an article about a psychological test.
I like to make an article about a psychological test. There are several articles about existing psychological tests, such as for example an article about the Rorschach test (go to: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rorschach_test). However, they do not alow me to make the article about this test for commercial reasons, although this test is freely available on Internet. What should I do to get my article accepted?—Preceding unsigned comment added by Ad van der Ven (talk • contribs)
- I think someone already gave you the answer on your talk page. Please do not add promotional material to Wikipedia. While objective prose about products or services is acceptable, Wikipedia is not intended to be a vehicle for advertising or promotion. --Elen of the Roads (talk) 13:00, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
What about the Rorschach test and many other psychological test on Wikipedia? It seems one is judging with different standards. Finally, on what authority are people deleting articles from Wikipedia. Why is it called the FREE encyclopedia? But I know it is all being said for nothing. The question is NOT who is correct, but who is in power! —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ad van der Ven (talk • contribs) 14:52, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- It is called “free” because you do not have to pay to read it, or reuse it. It is not free in the sense of anything goes. As to who is in power, it is the consensus of users. If you can persuade enough people that advertising type pages are allowed, then it will be allowed, but you will find that many thousands disagree, so you have your work cut out for you.--SPhilbrickT

Ad van der Ven - you can write an article about the test. You just can't write an advert for it. We have an article on the Rorscharch test - we don't have advertising for it. Have you got that now. Elen of the Roads (talk) 15:19, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

I'm a professional translator, and would like to help Wikipedia translate some of its articles into Portuguese. Can I do that? And how? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Fatamiky (talk • contribs) 11:43, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- You certainly can! There is a page here that lists pages that have been copied from a foreign language Wikipedia to this one. There is also this project which works on general translation issues. Finally, you are certainly encouraged to translate articles from the Portuguese Wikipedia to this one. TNXMan 11:49, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Be warned! It is very well possible that your translations are not accepted. Different standards for the Dutch en English Wikipedia?
I have submitted an article on Lottocracy on the Dutch Wikipedia (go to: http://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lottocratie). No problmes thusfar. I have tried several times to submit a similar article on the English Wikipedia and it is NOT accepted. It is very strange that these Wikipedias use different standards. Can anybody really help me? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ad van der Ven (talk • contribs) 15:01, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- Yes, they are different projects; each sets its own policies and procedures. Besides, there is in fact already a lottocracy article in the English-language Wikipedia, so I'm not sure what you're complaining about. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:08, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
Thanks for your anser. You wrote: "... there is in fact already a lottocracy article in the English-language Wikipedia, so I'm not sure what you're complaining about." No, there is NOT. The article is about Demarchy, which is quite different from Lottocracy. I could explain the difference in an article about what lottocracy really is, but, of course, this is not allowed in the UK and certainly NOT in a so-called FREE encyclopedia. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ad van der Ven (talk • contribs) 15:46, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- You are the only one who has made that assertion, to the best of my knowledge. If you believe (as I do not) that the two concepts are in some way different, then make the case for it on the talk page of demarchy. And I don't know what on earth Britain has to do with any of this, unless perhaps you think this is the English rather than the English-language Wikipedia???? (And any anarchist can tell you, living with freedom means setting standards for yourself and those around you.) --Orange Mike | Talk 15:53, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- I should have linked specifically to demarchy#Lottocracy up there; please accept my apology. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:15, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- I recommend you stop making these ludicrous assertions. The problem is that Wikipedia has rules, and you need to follow them. If you have good sources that demarchy and lottocracy are different, write the article here User:Ad van der Ven/Lottocracy (just click the link and start writing) and when you've finished, ask an admin to delete the redirect so it can be moved into article space. Same with your article on the psychological test. Write an article here User:Ad van der Ven/Internet Attention Test using reliable sources to show that the test is notable, remembering that you are writing an article not an advert. When you have finished, post back here and whoever is on the board will let you know if the article is now OK to post. Elen of the Roads (talk) 15:57, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- You will also need to make a successful case that this concept is in some way notable, rather than so obscure that you felt driven to post that the non-notable book by an unknown author in which the term was coined is available in the Library of Congress. --Orange Mike | Talk 17:15, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) As Orangemike says each Wikimedia project runs pretty much autonomously. I can't really comment on nlwiki's policies as they relate to your article, but looking at it it is quite clear that it is not up to standard for enwiki. It relies on a single source, which doesn't appear to meet reliable sources guidelines. Given that you are the author of the source, which is clearly POV-pushing, there is also a conflict of interest issue. I can't comment on the content of the article as I do not read Dutch and am not confident that the Google translation is a fair representation of what you've written. BTW, in your criticism you've chosen to highlight the word free, but I suggest you also take note of the word that follows it. AJCham 16:05, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- This goes back to an AfD Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Lottocracy. Dougweller (talk) 17:35, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
What the f*#& happened to this article?
It is on the main page at DYK (did you know). It was around since 2008 but was it sneaky vandalism where a junk article was sitting there for 2 years before a real article was written? Or was another article renamed, moved, and new text added (for example, is it like the "Finland" article moved to "Lady Gaga" and the text replaced to be about Lady Gaga?
This is weird! Suomi Finland 2009 (talk) 15:19, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- This kind of thing can easily happen when a user develops an article in a personal sandbox – all of the junk edits and previous drafts will remain in the edit history. You can see here that the page didn't become live until 30 June. I'm not sure if there is a process by which the unrelated edits can be deleted from the page history, but IMO there ought to be. AJCham 15:29, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
{ec}:I know what he did, because I've seen someone else do a similar thing recently. He started out in his sandbox, writing an article about the Artspace project. Then, more recently, he cleared the sandbox, wrote a new article about the barber, and moved it into article space.--Elen of the Roads (talk) 15:34, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- Update: it is indeed possible to remove the unrelated edits. User:The Earwig is on the case. AJCham 15:46, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- Some editors, like User:AgnosticPreachersKid, edit that way in sandboxes, and it's not necessarily a bad thing; but it does create some goofy-looking edit histories. After all, sandboxes are for messing around in. I don't know that there's a way to write software sophisticated enough to handle something like that, so I figure we just need to be aware that this can happen. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:48, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Moving half an edit history?
Hi, I drafted a new version of Shinan District at User:Noraft/Sandbox/4. I'm about ready to move it to the location of the current article, and it occurred to me (belatedly) that cut-and-paste moves are frowned upon. However, a wholesale move of the page will take with it (in the edit history) what was in the sandbox before (a different article I was working on). There's no way to have an admin move an article and part of its edit history, is there? What should I do? ɳorɑfʈ Talk! 17:46, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- An admin can split the history, as shown above. However, the problem with cut and paste moves is that it makes proper attribution more complicated, as the page history and therefore list of contributors is lost. If you are the only contributor to this page I don't think a cut and paste move is really a problem, unless you are particularly keen to retain details of each edit you made. AJCham 17:55, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- I'm the only contributor to the sandbox article, so shouldn't be a problem, then. Thanks! ɳorɑfʈ Talk! 18:57, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
Filmography
All I want to do is add to the filmography for Thomas Gibson. He was in Eyes Wide Shut, playing Carl (a motion picture which came out in 1999). While I am proud of myself for finding something to contribute to Wikipedia, I can't spend more time trying to figure out how to add this small fact. Can you post it for me, or tell me how to get it in the right place, with the right format? Thanks.Nicholm (talk) 18:35, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- If you have a reliable source for the information, you can add it to the article (with its source); or if you're not confident in doing that, put a note in the article's talk page asking somebody to. If you cannot find a reliable source, you may not add the information, and nor may anybody else unless they find such a source. See WP:V. --ColinFine (talk) 18:59, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- (edit conflict) One easy way to do it is to click on the "edit" link to the right of the "Filmography" heading, then copy one of the existing entries, paste it in the appropriate chronological position, and replace the title, date, etc., with the information for Eyes Wide Shut. If you want me or someone else to do it for you, just say so. Deor (talk) 19:03, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- I just went ahead and added the entry, since the filmography needed some copyediting as well. Deor (talk) 00:45, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
What to do about offensive or soapbox material on a talk page.
What is the appropriate response to offensive material on a BLP talk page, i.e. the bottom of Talk:Cliff_Lee? What about soap box material not useful to the article on a talk page, i.e. everything at Talk:Freedom? What about useless or offensive material on a talk page, a personal attack or a racial slur, tho I have no example of such a page. 018 (talk) 18:51, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- From the BLP guidelines for non-article pages - "Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced and not related to making content choices, should be removed, deleted, or oversighted as appropriate." I have therefore removed the last section from Talk:Cliff Lee.
- Your other examples are less clear-cut; there are guidelines at No personal attacks. If the text is merely "useless" than I think it should stay; it may eventually be archived. -- John of Reading (talk) 19:33, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
If it has nothing to do with the improvement of the article it can and should be removed as per WP:FORUM. --Saddhiyama (talk) 20:01, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

Using excerpts and images for third party articles?
I am a freelance writer/editor of online content and at the same time new to this world of writing for a living. I have to do a lot of research for the clients I work for and 90% of the research I do online the other 10% is done with physical media at he library etc... Anyway that is the background of where I am coming from. The actual questions are:
1. Can I use excerpts and/or images from Wikipedia in the articles I write? 2. If so what how do I need to go about using these items so I do not end up doing something which is either an infringement on copyright rules or considered bad form? Please mention all the accepted ways if there are more than one.
I plan to add links and give Wikipedia the credit it rightly deserves with any and all of the excerpts/Images I end up using, unless it would be better for Wikipedia that I not do so as I often do not know where my articles may wind up and therefore cannot guarantee that a plagiarist or spammer may end up taking and using my work and the last thing I want is for Wikipedia to be cast in the dark shadow of unscrupulous Internet "entrepreneurs".
Thank you for your time and have a great day.
P.S., I have searched and read some of the FAQs, but (some researcher I am) have not found anything either definitive and all encompassing regarding this matter and at the same time written in layman's/simple terms. And I am also writing this to have it on record for others to find and make use of honest lol. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Neilmaclennan555 (talk • contribs) 19:19, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- See Wikipedia:Reusing Wikipedia content, which explains the matter more fully than I could here. I wouldn't worry about people making nefarious use of your/our work; as long as you've given credit where it's due, that would be their problem. Deor (talk) 19:31, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

- Check out the other wikis in Category:Music on WikiIndex. Some of them probably accept a wider range of content in their topic areas than Wikipedia does.
- Create some reliable sources, by finding journalists in the mainstream media or recognized academics who will write about some of the infinite number of good musicians, writers, and artists about whom not much is available in the mainstream media currently.
- Note that Wikipedia is not friendly to many different types of niche interests. That's why people have set up thousands of other wikis catering to nearly every niche interest. For many people it is probably a mistake to edit only on Wikipedia while ignoring all the other wikis. There is too much interesting material we cannot get to stick here. Changing an article name
I created this page a few weeks ago with little understanding of the naming conventions for biographical articles. I would like the article name changed from [Wilma Oram Young] to Wilma Oram, but I am not sure how to do it. Oram was her name during the war and it is the name she was known by to her fellow veterans. Similarly it is the name of her service record and so it is the more appropriate article title than using Young. Any help in changing the name or instruction on where i should go to do so would be much appreciated. Mellen deadrock (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 21:36, 8 July 2010 (UTC).
- See WP:MOVE for the mechanics of changing an article name. See WP:DISAMBIG, WP:HATNOTE, and WP:REDIRECT for instructions on cleaning up any confusion that may result. See Wikipedia:Naming conventions (people)#Multiple and changed surnames for the relevant guideline. I wouldn't think the article title is as important as making sure the lead section clearly identifies the person and explains the name change. --Teratornis (talk) 22:17, 8 July 2010 (UTC)

advertising on wikipedia
Is it appropriate to use wikipedia for free advertising? I noted that a local hospital when googled had a link to wiki. When I looked at the reference I noted that it was essentially and advertisement.
``` —Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.204.47.141 (talk) 22:35, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- It is absolutely not appropriate. WP:NOTADVERTISING and WP:SPAM are just a sampling of the many pages which address these matters. If a page is patently advertising, you can mark it for speedy deletion by placing the template db-g11 in the article. Can you tell us the name of the page you are here about? By the way, this site is called Wikipedia, not wiki. A wiki is any website using wiki software; there are thousands of them.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 23:02, 8 July 2010 (UTC)
- You will have to follow the procedure documented at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. Keep in mind that the copyright holder of the photo needs to license it under a "free license" such as one listed at the "Donating your photographs" section of that page. (A free license allows anyone to use, modify, and distribute the photo, even commercially.) Otherwise, the new photo will not be accepted, and we will continue to use the old photo. Gadget issue with browser update
My employer's IT recently updated our browsers from IE6 to IE7 (yeah, a 'lil behind the times), but in doing so, most of my gadgets no longer work, especially popups, HotCat, and the RefToolbar. Since I've never had an issue with this on my home computer on IE7 or IE8, I'm guessing it must be that some of the settings may have changed, but I'm not sure which options to begin fiddling with. For my money, you'll want to find some more sources that talk about your subject; are there any news articles or media profiles about Mr. Kline specifically (as opposed to cases he worked on, for example)? The tag has a link to a place where you can ask for feedback. Edits are seriously attributed to wrong username
I am getting really tired of no one trying to find out what this is all about. Since my username change all the edits are STILL attributed to User:Shannon1 (usurped3) according to the preferences counter and this page. My preferences say I have 841 edits but I really have around 13,000. The other edit counter works fine though. Please find somebody who can do something about this. Shannontalk contribs 19:13, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
- When you changed your username, did you just stop using your old account and start using the new one instead of asking for a proper rename at WP:CHU? The last rename we have in the rename log was:
20:24, 10 April 2010 Useight (talk | contribs) renamed User:Shannon1 to "Shannon1 (usurped3)" (12,548 edits. Reason: WP:CHU)
. The "usurped3" username has never been renamed according to the rename log. Since generally, we do not merge accounts' edits together, the best we could probably do (given a request to WP:CHU) would be to rename the current account to another username and rename the "usurped3" account to "Shannon1" (that is if you can remember the password for your old account). Something doesn't look right though about an account that has made 12,548 edits being usurped (especially without any corresponding request at WP:CHU I can find), so perhaps you should ask at WP:VPT; they might be able to better help you. PleaseStand (talk) 19:49, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
- (ec) Special:Contributions/Shannon1_(usurped3) shows the usurped-3 account having only 3 attributed edits, while the Shannon1 account having the rest. Is it just the preferences counter that is wrong? That would be a VPT question if so. The other page you linked is bot-fed, so may have different issues depending on where it is pulling from. Your edits do seem to all be attributed to the Shannon1 name at this time though. ArakunemTalk 19:58, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
- The bot-updated page uses the same edit count as the Preferences page. That edit count (for performance reasons) is stored along with the user's name, password, etc. in the user table of the database, and it is updated when each edit is made. Therefore, if edits are reattributed to a different user account, then the edit counts provided on the preferences page will be incorrect. Edit counts produced by Toolserver tools (e.g. X!'s edit counter) should be unaffected because they actually count the number of contributions rather than using the count stored in the user table. It should be possible for a system administrator (often but incorrectly called a "developer") to fix the edit counts. PleaseStand (talk) 23:32, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
- (after asking on IRC) It is obvious that your username change was botched, but the MediaWiki edit count is actually not very critical. Its main purpose is to autoconfirm users, so it's not worth fixing. (You aren't suffering from WP:editcountitis, are you?) You could put a note on your user page saying that the edit count obtained through such tools as "navigation popups" is inaccurate. PleaseStand (talk) 00:09, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
LaTeX
I've been using LaTeX syntax in math mode, i.e. <math> </math>. If I include normal sized maths then it doesn't look right because it's too big, e.g. . So I have started using \scriptstyle to make the smaller: . But that seems to bunch things up and the spacing's all wrong. In the end I have to add extra spaces myself: <math>\scriptstyle U \, \otimes \, V \, \cong \, W^*</math> yields . Is there a command in the Wikipedia maths environment that automatically adds extra little spaces between each term? If there were then I could cut and past <math>\scriptstyle\spacingcommand </math> and then insert the maths. •• Fly by Night (talk) 19:56, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
Case Sensitivity
Why do Wikipedia links have to be case sensitive when the search bar is not? The link wp:calm returns wp:calm while wp:CALM returns wp:CALM. But if you type wp:calm, wp:Calm, wp:cAlm, wp:caLm, wp:calM or any other combination in the search bar you get the right page. Is there a way to change it? •• Fly by Night (talk) 20:14, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
- I don't think that would be a good idea. For example, you might link to WP:Calm, with the intended target being WP:CALM, and this may work for a time. If someone later creates the page WP:Calm, all of a sudden your link is targeted to the wrong page, and you would have received no notification that anything had changed. Help with the infobox template
I need help editing the infobox for the CollabraSpace article. The first problem is that I can't figure out how to change the width of the box. Even when I put breaks between the data, the labels are still to long. I also need help with disappearing information. Every time I try to add text to header 5, label5 and data5 disappears when I preview the infobox. The goal is to have header5 say 'Key People' and label5 and data 5 to include what's already in the infobox on the page. Any help would be much appreciated.CS525 (talk) 20:47, 9 July 2010 (UTC)CS525
- I think
headerX
anddata/labelX
are mutually exclusive – the label is only used if no header is present. If you want to useheader5
, the following data should be indata/label6
. However, don't bother with that. You'd be better off using Infobox company anyway, rather than the generic Infobox. Regards, AJCham 21:02, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
Unspecified Login errors
Attempts to log in (past 2-3 days) have been met with an immediate appearance of a pale orange box with the heading line:
Login error
(remainder of the top line blank.) The subsequent material is:
"There seems to be a problem with your login session; this action has been canceled as a precaution against session hijacking. Please hit "back" and reload the page you came from, then try again. "
Taking that advice merely duplicates the same result. Other examples of login errors found on Wikipedia seem to be more specific. How can this be rectified?
Adding a table of contents entry for Spiritual Healing in Faith Healing article?
Hi,
I've added text to the Faith Healing article so that people can learn about Spiritual Healing. In section 1.2 Spiritualism is covered. How can I add a TOC entry for "1.2.1 Spiritual Healing"?
Many thanks,
Adrian
Adrian-from-london (talk) 22:35, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
- Tables of Contents are created with headers, like the one above this message. The "Spiritualism" section is defined as a level 3 header, which is made ===like this=== with three equal signs. If you want to make a subheader under that, use four equal signs. So to make the section "Spiritual Healing", type this: ====Spiritual Healing==== where you want the header to be. See this page for more information. Robert Skyhawk (T C B) 22:40, 9 July 2010 (UTC)
User name vs. IP address in change log.
I have left suggestions for changes to articles, but never updated an article myself until now. The change was a simple correction to a misspelling which I see no reason to back out. And should I? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wcomm (talk • contribs) 09:03, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
- Hi. Sorry. We did this through 2005 but no longer allow it. IP edits are absolutely allowed and welcomed so from our end there's no problem with it having been made while you were logged out. However, if you want to take credit, you can make a dummy edit to the article, and leave a message in your edit summary that the prior edit was by you. Note a method for alerting yourself that you're not logged in: if like me you absolutely despise the new vector skin that was forced down our throats (without proper testing), check in your preferences under the Appearance tab, the radio button for "MonoBook", which is the original default skin of the site. Thus, when you are not logged in, the whole place will have Vector's crappy look, and you'll be used to Monobook so it should be immediately, jarringly obvious you're logged out. To even further make it obvious, you can change the save page button to a different color by creating a page at User:Wcomm/monobook.css and adding the text
/* Turn the "Save page" button green if I'm logged in */ INPUT#wpSave { background-color:#88ff88; }
- Who is "we", what are you documenting, and which wiki do you refer to? This is the English Wikipedia, a free encyclopedia. This is the Wikipedia Help desk, which answers questions about using Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a manual, guidebook, textbook, or scientific journal; therefore, many types of documentation do not belong here. (We do have extensive internal manuals that describe how to use Wikipedia itself.) Also, Wikipedia is not "WIKI". If you are part of an organization with documents you want to publish and control, you could start your own Enterprise wiki. See WP:BUSFAQ. If your organization has already done this, then at least one person at your organization needs to read the MediaWiki manuals to answer questions from users who have not or will not. To your questions:
- On Wikipedia, we generally write articles from scratch rather than import them from other editors such as Microsoft Word. However, there are a few tools that might help. See the links under WP:EIW#Import and WP:EIW#Table. Do not expect miracles from these tools; they may or may not do what you need. In general, automatic document conversion tends to be less than fully satisfying.
- Help:Section does not seem to specify the maximum subsection depth available under the MediaWiki software. My test in User:Teratornis/Sandbox4 seems to confirm your finding. If you need more than six levels of section headings, perhaps you need to split your pages into sub-pages. The features available in the MediaWiki software reflect the needs of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia Foundation projects. I cannot recall seeing a Wikipedia article that needed more than six levels of headings.
- You can edit an SVG file with Inkscape. Also see OpenStreetMap, which provides several ways to generate freely reusable maps. It has pretty good coverage of the US now because some users imported the TIGER/Line map data. You did not mention how you intend to publish your story. See WP:REUSE for instructions on how to comply with licensing requirements when you re-use media from Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons. --Teratornis (talk) 20:31, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
- There are more than 12 million registered usernames. You don't mention any of the tried usernames but the message is probably right: They are all in use already. More than a thousand new accounts have been created since your post so there are no signs of an error in the process. Just keep trying and pick something unlikely if you are impatient, or see Special:ListUsers for taken usernames. "Bob Scheepers" is not taken. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:46, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
- Also note that, paradoxical as it may seem, an album in your possession, autographed or not, is not a reliable source in Wikipedia's terms, and so cannot be used to reference any information. In order to add that album to the list, you should find a reliable public source that says that it exists. (See WP:V for why this apparently strange rule is in place, and very important). --ColinFine (talk) 23:56, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
iCarly Season 4 Episode One: iGot a Hot Room
iGot a Hot Room is to be the first episode in the fourth season of iCarly, airing on the 30th of July 2010 for the first time.
Here is a few things that will happen in iGot a Hot Room:
Gibby's blind grandfather will be giving Spencer a haircut. Carly's room is burned down thanks to a gummy bear lamp Spencer made for her birthday. Because Carly doesn't have a bedroom, Sam offers for her to stay at her house. Spencer earns 82,000 dollars because of a family heirloom that was lost in the fire. Scripted in the episode is a Dane Cook "lookalike". Dane Cook makes a cameo? Everybody plans to surprise Carly with a completely re-done bedroom. Sam, Spencer, Freddie, Gibby, and some painters all work together. (Includes a montage scene ending with a USA chant...) Freddie continues to speak Spanish. Sam speaks Italian Carly's bedroom is shown for the first time (At Last!). —Preceding unsigned comment added by Wiffo92 (talk • contribs) 18:02, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
Book authors violating their own copyright?
I noticed the comments on Talk:History of Falls Church in which an IP suggested too much of the source had been reproduced and that exceeds "fair use". Oklahombre (talk · contribs), the only editor of the History of Falls Church article (and the A Virginia Village Goes to War--Falls Church During the Civil War article about the book of the same name), claimed to be the author of that source and defended his use of his own book as a source. Can an author make a copyright violation of his own book? And is there a clear Conflict of Interest in the author so heavily citing his own book? Astronaut (talk) 20:26, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
- So far as copyright is concerned, there are three issues:
- Does the quote really exceed fair use? I have not looked, so I have no opinion.
- Did the author assign all his/her rights to someone else (perhaps the publisher)? If so, it is indeed possible for the author to violate the copyright.
- Is the wikipedia editor really the author? The Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission page discusses verifying that the proper entity has given permission to use the work. Jc3s5h (talk)
Special:WhatLinksHere/Susan Gardner (artist) shows the only link to the article is from a redirect. No other articles link to it. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:33, 10 July 2010 (UTC)
Mods and Policies....
I recently was restoring and updating material I placed on Number of the Beast back on April, 24th 2010. The material was removed by Dougweller. He gave the following reason: "I don't see Walid Shoebat as a reliable source for this subject - additionally the YouTube video is copyvio and the website is just a personal website with more copyvio & stuff about the pillars of fire & atom bombs"
1. Dougweller is being subjective about the creator of the interpretation. I ask how can the person that created the interpretation not be a reliable source?
2. Dougweller then claims copyright violations. Clearly all material presented falls under fair use.
I revert the change and begin to update the content with different and more sources.
carl bunderson comes to the page while I am editing and reverts the change I had just made.
I then save my new changes (not knowing carl bunderson had just undo that I had saved) with the updated references and immediately carl bunderson undoes the changes I have made.
carl bunderson never took the time to see that references were added and changed. I am then told by carl bunderson that I am violating the Verifiability policy. How am I violating the Verifiability policy or any other policy? I have read the policies and can not find anything in violation.
I'd like my contribution reviewed. Ploxhoi (talk) 00:07, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
- Articles should be based on reliable, third-party, published sources with a reputation for fact-checking and accuracy. Any random Christian association does not work, unfortunately. I understand, it was a real pain in the neck to look for reliable sources. The same has happened to me before; see Talk:List of vegetarians/Archive 1. Sorry I cannot be more helpful but please look for another source. Cheers Kayau Voting IS evil 02:12, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
- Ploxhoi has also decided that Carl Bunderson and I are trolls. Never mind, he isn't new but he's only made a handful of edits. Our guidelines do not allow fair use as a justification for linking to copyvio sites. Shoebat's views are simply not significant/notable, and he's been told this now by 3 editors. He needs to find reliable third party sources discussing Shoebat's views, specifically scholarly journals in this csae, before they can be added. He also needs to read WP:CONSENSUS. Dougweller (talk) 05:03, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
- Dougweller you are completely ignoring fair use, what you claim are copyright violation are not. Before you start labeling everything you see that maybe copied a copyright violation, please read up on fair use. You can start at: http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl102.html Just because youtube and other sites have copyrighted materials posted doesn't mean all materials on that site are copyright violations. The majority of the material is fair use or contributed by the owner. I did not decide you were a troll, but by your actions led me to believe you were trolls and being disruptive to the website. Just don't remove stuff that is not vandalism and not expect for someone to put it back. Don't just post here is the policy, explain the specific point in the policy for which the material was removed.
- Now I ask what is wrong with the peer-review video I posted? http://www.muhammadtube.com/videos/186/bismillah-and-666 Also Dougweller is saying Shoebat's views are simply not significant/notable, which is subjective. That view appears to be a different view than what I have received from the other mods. The other mods say I need a reliable third party review, I thought I had that covered with the peer-review video. No way will I find a source other than Christan in nature. Jewish groups will not comment, that would mean they'd accept Revelations, Muslims will deny, otherwise they are attacking their own religion, and Atheists will deny all. Though I myself am not Christian, I do find the view intriguing, significant, and very compelling. I think you are asking the impossible to dig out a source with absolutely no Christian association. Ploxhoi (talk) 06:44, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
- We are trying to make an encyclopaedia here. We are not making a giant book for experts of every area. Articles should be precise, but not that precise. If you cannot verify something with a reliable sources, then don't add it at all. Please remember to assume good faith, as calling someone a troll when (s)he is acting in good faith may be considered insulting. Kayau Voting IS evil 07:13, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
- To answer your question, I have to ask you another question. Who is William Shoebat and why should anyone care what his opinion of 666 is? Ok sure, William Shoebat has an article on Wikipedia, and is probably notable, but so are hundreds of thousands of other individuals. Any person (even any notable person) can create a website, write a book, or go on tour, all to espouse some new theory. If we published in our articles every opinion ever expressed on the internet, Wikipedia would soon overflow with crap. The sources that are acceptable are limited to sources with a reputation for fact checking and accuracy. This generally means scholarly works, peer reviewed, and published by a respected academic body. So I ask you again, why should anyone care what Shoebat thinks? Bug in Lupin's AVT
Sometimes when I press rollback, the rollback is not executed in Google Chrome; however, the system does not prompt me. I have to frequently check my contribs just to check if the rollback was executed. Strangely enough, the warning usually works, and I would end up warning somebody when I was not the rollbacker (an example is the List of The Powerpuff Girls characters, where Tide rolls rollbacked the edit and I ended up warning the user.) Is there a way to fix it? Thanks a million, Kayau Voting IS evil 02:22, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
- If somebody else made the same revert before you save then your edit becomes a null edit (no change to the page source) which is not registered in logs. When editing manually, I cannot see whether my edit was a null edit or not without checking the page history or my contributions afterwards. A warning doesn't have to be given by the editor who made the revert and the warning you gave with Lupin's AVT [1] doesn't claim you made the revert, so I don't see a problem in that situation. If the first editor to revert (or somebody else) also gave a warning then I don't know whether Lupin's AVT will discover that and omit the warning, but if a user is sometimes given two warnings for the same edit then it doesn't seem to matter much. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:30, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
- Problem is, usually AVT prompts me when the edit cannot be done. This is not done. In some cases, the rollback is not executed but nobody has reverted the edit. This is an important bug that cannot be explained by null edits. Kayau Voting IS evil 10:38, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
It says on his page he has made 6 appearances and scored 2 goals when he has only scored 1 goal.I try to edit the page but when i do,on the edit page it says 1 goal.So i save it but when i look on the page it says two goals again. I have tried purging but hasnt worked.What do i do?,Gobbleswoggler (talk) 11:47, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
- The diff says that somehow or other you did not manage to edit the number of goals, only the update date/time. I suggest you have another try. You shouldn't need to purge to see the result of an edit to the contents of an infobox. BTW it's helpful to include a clickable link, Fran Mérida, when asking about a particular page. -- John of Reading (talk) 12:02, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
- The infobox source includes this code:
| years1 = 2007–2010 |clubs1 = Arsenal |caps1 = 6 |goals2 = 1 | years2 = 2007-2008 |clubs2 = → Real Sociedad (loan) |caps2 = 14 |goals1 = 2 | years3 = 2010– |clubs3 = Atlético Madrid |caps3 = 0 |goals3 = 0
- It is the names and not the order of named parameters that matter. caps1 go together with goals1. I suggest swapping the names goals1 and goals2 to avoid confusion for other editors. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:16, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
At what educational level should Wiki articles on technical subjects be written?
Should we be Britannica, World Book, or something aimed at grade school children? An editor suggested that one article needed to be dumbed down because school children would be among the readers. Some article topics (e.g., theoretical physics) are by their nature aimed at those with more sophisticated general knowledge levels. Some article topics (e.g., teen idols) are inherently aimed at the young. Is there a Wikipedia guideline for determining what level is appropriate for a particular article? I note that there is some allusion to this in the editing guidelines on law articles, implying higher levels of assumed knowledge. What of articles on technical topics that happen to have wide public interest? Thanks for ALL views. Sfcardwell (talk) 13:55, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
- In my personal opinion Wiki articles should aspire to address all levels of sophistication. I think this should firstly be attempted within the article, and also by means of linking to further expansion in articles on subtopics. But even the article which is on a subtopic should attempt to address the widest audience possible. That is my opinion on the subject. I am particularly opposed to articles on "Introduction to something." I don't think we should be creating subjects in accordance with a level technical detail or some related factor. - Please note [Simple], which is specifically aimed at supplying a version aimed at younger people and/or people for whom English is a second language.--SPhilbrickT 15:06, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
- I think the concern at the Simple English Wikipedia is with language. I don't think the concern there is primarily with presentation of subject matter. I think the question being asked is about how certain subject matter should be presented. The two areas may overlap, but I think in the majority of cases it is not language itself that presents the significant barrier. The obstacle to grasping certain subjects is likely to be a scarcity of background information necessary for comprehension of the topic under consideration. Bus stop (talk) 16:12, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
- (←) Wikipedia is not paper, so Wikipedia can be many things at the same time. (However, Wikipedia is not Wiki.) We can have technical articles about complex subjects and introductory articles too. See for example:
- Bus stop, why don't you like that? The division appears natural to me. Someone who doesn't need the introduction can easily skip it and get right to the technical article. Someone who would get overwhelmed by the technical article can start with the introductory article. When Wikipedia has something I don't need, I just ignore it. There is probably no human alive who needs everything on Wikipedia. The needs of one person could never adequately reflect the needs of all humanity, which is Wikipedia's target audience. And to Sfcardwell, we also have Wikibooks and Wikiversity which can treat complex topics in more depth and more pedagogically than an encyclopedia. --Teratornis (talk) 18:10, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
- Teratornis — There is no such topic as "Introduction to special relativity." It fails fundamental policy requirements for article creation. At WP:RS we find, "If a topic has no reliable sources, Wikipedia should not have an article on it." Special relativity is a topic. How is Introduction to special relativity a topic? Sources are going to support Special relativity as a topic. Some of those sources supporting Special relativity as a topic are going to be easier to understand than other sources. But the sources are all on the same topic. If the material is inherently difficult for most people to understand we should have earlier paragraphs serving as an introduction to succeeding paragraphs. And when space constraints become an issue, topics within a main article should be linked to articles on subtopics. And if called for at articles on subtopics, earlier paragraphs should serve as an introduction to succeeding paragraphs. Bus stop (talk) 21:02, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
- There is no such thing as an Author Page. As a Wikipedia editor, you are welcome to create a User page, where you can put various information about yourself that is relevant to your work on Wikipedia.
- If you are talking about a Wikipedia article about you as an author, please read WP:AUTOBIO. In short, if you meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability, then somebody could create an article about you; but you should not do it yourself, as you have at least a potential conflict of interest, and are unlikely to be able to write such an article neutrally. If you have the necessary independent, reliable references to establish your notability, please post a request at WP:Requested articles, preferably with those references. --ColinFine (talk) 15:56, 11 July 2010 (UTC)
