Biography of living person references

My aunt sent me information and asked me to edit what she thought was a wikipedia page on her. It is actually her husbands page which she is mentioned on. You can't. Information needs to come from published reliable sources. See WP:RS RudolfRed (talk) 01:45, 13 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

This is not necessarily the case, so long as:

the material is neither unduly self-serving nor an exceptional claim;
it does not involve claims about third parties (such as people, organizations, or other entities);
it does not involve claims about events not directly related to the subject;
there is no reasonable doubt as to its authenticity;
the article is not based primarily on such sources.

Second, where are these "updated since my last visit" edit summaries coming from, and if they are just dummy summaries how can I agitate to get rid of them as a vicious crutch and a waste of bandwidth?

For the first part of your question, click here Special:MyPage/skin.js and add to the page

After you save, bypass your cache. This will provide a much enhanced diff view but you have to know where to look. Go to a diff, like your link above, and then look for a new button at the bottom of the page with a green triangle inside. Click on that to see the enhanced diff view. As to the second part of your question, many users have complained about this new feature (including me, though at a time when it was bundled with other more intrusive changes). Did Monobook die?

Hmm. I'm having trouble getting Wikipedia to display correctly. Unfortunately I noticed this around the time when I had decided to update my preferences, so I'm not sure if I'm the only one with this problem. Basically the whole Monobook skin is gone, and I'm left with a bare-bones view of pages. It does this in Firefox, Chrome, and EE. My ancestors, Anna Haining (Swan) BATES and her husband, Martin Van Buren Bates, are not on this list. Both were tall enough to be included:

Anna Haining Bates 7 feet 5.5 inches tall. See Wikipedia listing for her. Born 6 August 1846, Nova Scotia, died 5 August 1888, Ohio.

Martin Van Buren Bates 7 feet 9 inches tall per Guiness Book of Records (Wikipedia listing). Born 9 November 1837, Kentucky, died 1 January 1919, Ohio. He was a Civil War veteran, Confederate Cavalry, rode a Percheron to battle.

You can use reliable sources from those articles, however, to cite the addition of these two people to the list of tallest people. It would help to add in the notes section what your ancestors were the tallest in though because it seems like most of the people listed at List of tallest people were "the tallest professional wrestler" or "the tallest player in the NBA" or "the tallest volleyball player" or something of that nature. That would depend mainly on where and how you used it. If you use it in a conversation with a friend, no one is likely to know or care; if used in an educational assignment paper, plagiarism might affect your grade or expulsion. If used for commercial purposes, the publisher is required to do "due diligence", depending on jurisdiction, they may become as liable as you for damages, court costs, litigation fees, and incarceration. Radical change in average page ratings of an article

I just need enlightenment on how this could have possibly happened.

Some three months ago I checked the ratings on the Reproductive Health Bill and it was 4 out of 5 in most if not all of the 4 categories. There were around 70 ratings then per category. Today I came back and I am surprised that in all categories the rating is 1. The number of ratings has climbed to around 90.

How do you explain this when this is about current average ratings, meaning that the rating should have averaged to around 2 or 3 but not 1 given the previous ratings of 4? Is there something that can be done about this? Neutr8 (talk) 06:52, 13 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Paying attention to the data collected by the WP:AFT is a waste of your time. You have to be patient, in a while the WP:AFT5 will be deployed. Classical Pantheism

trying to restart a page (Classical Pantheism) that was nominated for deletion and then merged to Pantheism by consensus. I have redone the page and removed the redirects but the link on the Pantheism page still redirects to "Pantheism" as it did before. How do I fix this? You changed Classical pantheism but not Classical Pantheism with upper case P. One of them should redirect to the other but I'm not sure which one. Russell Morts (born around October 1979; disappeared May 5, 1982) gained national attention as one of the first missing children to appear within articles in national publications, such as Newsweek Magazine in 1982. His abduction from a New York wheat field also helped bring to light the plight of missing and exploited children in America. sorry, need a quick help to place foot note

Please see the article golden ratio at the very first sentence. This small-set text should be placed as a footnote (to not disturb the reader) , but I don't know how to achieve this. Certain templates {{footnote3}} are out of age and others {{FNBox}} are unknown.

From looking at the edit history of the article, it looks like the small text was a recent addition, and has already been removed, as being inappropriate for the Lead and being added without consensus. To put something in a footnote, place it between <ref>...</ref> instead of ..., but I advise you to seek consensus on the talk page before re-adding it. ~Adjwilley (talk) 20:19, 13 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Based on the current style of the article, I'd recommend just putting all of it into the same footnote (the words and the citation). There is a way to make a Footnotes section that is separate from the rest of the references, but if you look at the current references, they're a mix of notes and citations. Sorry, this was not a quick help -- yes, because it is a frequently-called article and I made the change recently I wanted quick help. Thus it was already deleted. But teh deleter was a fighter also in the german-article "Goldener Schnitt". He tries to press his personal views. :-(

To the problem I wanted your help: It seems impossbile (now to me) to have a reference as reference inside a footnote in wikipedia-en, because footnotes are not distinct from references. Am I right? If not show me the solution in principle in this case of article, please.

Redirects!

I need little suggestion here, one person has created too many (40 or more) alternative spelling redirects for one article! 2-3 (or maximum 4-5) redirects I can understand, but 40 redirects are too much. I am interested to learn: is there any limit here? If it is an abuse then an admin is needed to delete some pages! Not an issue I've come across before but redirects are cheap as they say, and unlike here, all of them seem like relatively plausible phonetic spellings. In any event, if your cousin is the Rodeo Champion mentioned in List of World All-Around Rodeo Champions, then based on my search of Google book sources and some news sources, he does appear to be a sufficiently notable subject to warrant an article. However, generally we strongly discourage people from writing articles about people they know personally, are related to, or are friends with, as doing so presents a conflict of interest. But the creation of an article is the manner he would normally be added to Wikipedia in some way, and where a photo would be placed. An article about Park Slope, Brooklyn omits the following four interesting and important facts about the neighborhood:

1. Barack Obama lived on Second Street in Park Slope immediately after he graduated from Columbia University

3. Park Slope now contains the largest Historic Distirict in New York City

$. The Dogers played there first baseball games in a ballpark where Washington Park is now located.

Allowed to seek help as an IP user? Being followed around Wikipedia?

Hi, so I got involved in an edit conflict. During the conflict they would tell me that my posts towards them were violating policies and guidelines yet their posts do the same. I've tried to resolve it and have informed the users involved about my real intents and that they were wrong about their perceptions of my posts. They insist and has been following my contributions page since then. So I decided to go the discussion pages concerning those policies they mentioned and ask other people there but these users would pop out of nowhere and posts that there is no need for me to ask anything there (but the other users around those boards disagree). I still find this disruptive. How can I block them from watching my contributions page?

Yeah they are kind of doing that. Then even discussed about me on their talk pages and had began assuming that I had some serious intentions and that I wasn't going to stop until I could over turn their consensus. I have told them repeatedly that I don't want to fight and that those are not my intentions. I eventually gave up on trying to come to an understanding with them. Now they are still following me and making more assumptions that I still have those intents. I don't think that the WP:dispute resolution is helpful because its mainly about contents in articles. If you are concerned about people unfairly stalking you and reverting you without cause, perhaps you should try a noticeboard like WP:WQA, which is more suited towards behavioral conflicts. I would try that first, and if nothing comes of that, you could escalate to WP:ANI. Note, however, that people at both of those noticeboards are going to need direct evidence, in the form of diffs, that shenanigans are going on, so at some point if you want redress, you're going to have to do so at your main account. --Jayron32 05:58, 14 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The general guidance on this subject is at Wikipedia:Obtaining geographic coordinates, with some good discussion on the talk page as well. If properly obtained, as described there, coordinates are not likely to be challenged, therefore they do not need to be cited unless they are, in fact, challenged. (Since the purpose of citations is so information in Wikipedia can be verified, most coordinates do not need to be cited simply because a person can verify the coordinates by calling them up on an online map and looking or by going to those coordinates on the ground; they are, in effect, self-verifying.) Even if they are challenged, in most cases there is a clear and obvious error and they can simply be corrected without citation. I generally do not include a citation unless there is an actual dispute, largely because our reference tags do not work with coordinates (especially in titles, where they do not work at all) and the "source" parameter in the coord tag isn't really meant for citing in this sense. If I include coordinates for a place or thing which no longer exists or which cannot otherwise be easily verified on the ground, I'll frequently indicate my source in a hidden comment just after the coord tag, just so as to forestall a dispute (example). Query about why some wikilinks are in red

I have a query about a couple of articles that are being considered for deletion. If you go to the article Barry Smitherman or the article Plane ride from hell, you will see that there are notices heading these articles stating that the articles are being considered for deletion. The notices contain the magic words "Please share you thoughts on this article's entry are Wikipedia: Articles for deletion. However, in both cases, when you go "this article's entry", you will see that the words are in red. Yet, it is still possible to click on the words and get to the article's entry. Can some please me how this came to be - I always thought that red wikilinks were where when one clicked, one did not through to anything? Many thanks for any responses, I am just curious! I think I've seen those article page notice redlinks more than 24 hours after they originally were posted, after the time when the server should have purged the page. Anti-vandalism templates like the one you saw are designed to give troublesome editors fair warning so that if they persist in vandalizing they can be fairly blocked. What code does media wiki use for bold and italics or where would I go to find out

It uses for bolding and for italics. I determined this by going to a random article with bolding and italics in it and looking at the source code to see how it rendered the text. Specifically, in Firefox, I clicked on Tools → Web Developer → Page Source; I then went back to the article and copied a word that was bolded and used the find function ctrl/⌘ Cmd+f to find it in the source code. I know very little about the visually impaired but read text and spoken text are quite different. I'm imagining every article opening with the name said more loudly and think that would sound odd. Say The Dark Side of the Moon, if you were reading it out loud you wouldn't read it as "THE DARK SIDE OF THE MOON is the eighth studio album by..." Wikipedia doesn't oftentimes use bold for emphasis in articles, but I know for a fact that there are blind editors and that bold is used for emphasis in discussions. I wish I could hear how a text editor would read it if it was enclosed . I do feel like editors who create a listen to this article set the first instance of the article apart by saying it strongly, but I'm not positive. Stephens City, Virginia appears to, but that may just be due to the accent. Where do you think I should head to find this out mediawiki or meta.wiki? Well, we all do. The issue is about what the software actual uses to render italics and bold, not what people type (or should type). The italics around "people type" that I just wrote was placed by typing doubled apostrophes. But after I click save, if you look at the source code of this page, you'll see that the actual rendering of that wikimarkup is translated into html, using (as opposed to ) So this thread has nothing to do with whether or not people should use html or wikimarkup but about how the software source renders the wikimarkup in source code for purposes of text readers.

You can find instructions on how to "move" the article from userspace into mainspace at WP:MOVE. Basically you just click the dropdown menu at the top (to the right of the "view history" tab) and select "move". It will prompt you to enter the new name for your article and this way you'll preserve your edit history that shows how you created the article. The OP was asking about moving a major edit of a published article: you cannot use 'Move' for that unless you get the original article deleted first. Any way to have different display settings for phone browser?

My computer and phone were recently stolen, and my new phone supports editing (with wikEd even, which was more than my computer would do) and everything (though I don't intend to do it unless I have to). I was wondering if it was possible to put something in my css page or something temporarily until I get a new computer that would improve how the desktop site displays on my phone. Missing bulleye

In the infobox for 1954 Adelaide earthquake the map is missing the epicenter bullseye. From comparing it to other pages it seems to have the correct info and I've messed around trying to get the bullseye to show without success. AGF / Wikiquette

Does anybody happen to know if the behavioral guidelines say anything about ABF usage of e.g. templates? The situation is, I'm involved in a deletion discussion, and the nominator has imho displayed some behavior that is rather questionable, especially considering he's the nominator. After contacting the user when he started tagging keep !votes as SPAs, I filed for Wikiquette assistance detailing the situation from my point of view, but nobody responded (not even the user although I had notified him of the WQA).

Now, he has tagged the AfD with {{Not a ballot}}, in what to me appears as yet another clearcut attempt to poison the well with pre-emptive accusations against those he disagrees with. Isn't such behavior considered borderline uncivil? And how is it in line with AGF to assume, in the absence of any plausible reason to do so, canvassing on the part of users who simply disagree with him and who (that would be the most plausible assumption imho) probably arrived at the AfD via the template at the top of the highly frequented nominated article?

Is this kind of behavior typical and acceptable for established Wikipedians? Any advice is welcome. I have decided against notifying the user about this discussion since he has been completely unresponsive so far, but if you think it would be better to let him know, feel very free to drop him a note. --195.14.222.155 (talk) 11:35, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Article for deletion discussions are Not a vote, they are intended to be a discussion of policies, hopefully resulting in an article which meets standards, or the identification of material unsuitable for retention on Wikipedia. When multiple, especially new, editors do not contribute to the discussion beyond Keep or Delete, it is sometimes helpful to prompt them to elaborate as to the how and why. Yeah, thank you, I know how AfD is supposed to work. My usage of "!votes" instead of "votes" should have given it away. Armbrust did not "prompt" anyone to elaborate, quite to the contrary. What he did was to "reply" to reasoned !votes with just an essay shortcut (WP:ITSUSEFUL). After he was subsequently told by multiple established editors (including admins) to stop that, he then resorted to tagging IP comments as SPAs. Again, he did not "prompt" anyone to elaborate further. He simply slapped SPA tags on reasoned comments. And now finally, he has slapped the {{Not a ballot}} on the page. That wasn't very clear, GOP. The thing to do is to search for the word(s) you want to be the redirect ("Gooblehausen", say) to see if a page already exists. On the, presumably empty, search-results page, you'll see the line "You may create the page "Gooblehausen", but consider checking the search results below to see whether the topic is already covered." Click on the red link, and you'll get an edit window in which you can type what GOP indicated. You may also want to add an appropriate template from the "R from . . ." set. Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia, not a dictionary, so etymologies are not regularly given (though some articles contain them). However the sister project Wiktionary has "fast", and you can see that it is the basic meaning a word found throughout the Germanic languages. Football / Soccer Prediction League

I currently run a prediction league based on the English Premier League and Championship between myself and 15 friends. We currently use Excel to calculate the tables, results, list fixtures etc... I have been running this for 2 years now and feel although I should start to keep a record of winners, losers, tables etc...

I'd very much like to use Wikipedia for this. I see the way the actual Premier League site has its page and I imagine I would attempt to make it look vaguely similar in the outline, but would like to have my own spin on things. I am not looking to advertise this to other members or companies, the prediction league takes up enough time as it is. But would mearly like somewhere to record the facts and figures of it. I wanted to ask if this is something that would be okay (before I put alot of time and effort in) to post to Wikipedia or would this page be deleted?

Help with citations!!

Hi I page I set up has the following notices at the top "This biographical article needs additional citations for verification. Please help by adding reliable sources. Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced must be removed immediately, especially if potentially libelous or harmful. (October 2011)" and "This article includes a list of references, related reading or external links, but its sources remain unclear because it lacks inline citations. Please improve this article by introducing more precise citations."

I added a list of inline citations and references a few months ago and the notices are still there.

Can you tell me what to do to remove them?

List articles in Wikipedia should contain only items that have, or could have, articles of their own in Wikipedia, which in turn depends on the subjects being notable by Wikipedia's criteria. If several independent reliable sources, such as newspapers, have discussed your organisation, then it passes the test for notability, and may have an article: but because of your conflict of interest you should not write the article. See also WP:CORP.

What I recommend you do is first, do a little research to find the sources required to establish that your article is notable. Once you have found them, then go to requested articles, and offer the research you have done (we're much more concerned with what people have written about you than about your own publications or website). Once somebody picks that up and writes an article (which may take a while: we're all volunteers), then you can be added to the list as you requested.

One more point: I'm afraid your username contravenes our username policy, as it promotes an organisation, so that account is likely to get blocked very soon. To whom it may concern. i am requesting that the paragraph found below be completely removed from the article. Based on industry and manufacturer guidelines Engine Flushes and Fuel injection cleaners are a recommended service by all manufacturers. i.e Mazda. being that i myself used to work for a Jiffy Lube and was a personal service adviser, i was the employee in charge recommending the services and i would personally check the owners manual and call dealerships and see what they say about the quoted service. i feel that there are to many points in this article pointing out the wrong. i am, of course, bias to this article because i used to be employed there but nevertheless, the article has no solid foundation for that specific quoted paragraph except for a news feed. please remove the comment.

Question about double-checking for sockpuppetry without violating WP:AGF

I have a question. If I've noticed that a newbie account is being used by an editor who has repeatedly made POV edits to an article, and that this editor also has a more long-standing account with which he/she has racked up over 6,500 since 2009, how do I embark or encourage an investigation to double-check this, without making an outright accusation of which I am not certain, thereby violating WP:AGF? So Tired of POV Edit Warriors

I've been trying to add a section to either the Koch family article, or the Political activities of the Koch family article for the past 3 days. I've been faced with stone-wall, partisan editors (Including a very troublesome admin) Arthur Rubin who has a Wikipedia record of being reported, reporting, edit warring, deleting other people Talk Page posts, etc. etc. in the hundreds. (See my Talk Page for more details on that. User talk:XB70Valyrie Every time I argue down the frivolity of their initial arguments they change their position over, and over, and over, and over again. I have made concession after concession and all they can do is pick more and more and more. I can see EXACTLY what's going on. A 5th grader could. Merging a Collaborative group article to one song article

Duo Group A was specifically formed for the purpose of taking part in a highly notable TV-music competitive event where they eventually won. In the show, they presented only one song and after the contest it eventually charted in several countries. Now an article about Group A and each of its individual members were made as they have become notable. But after the event finished, the group had not released anymore material together and they have been involved in various solo projects ever since. This could suggest that they were not really a group and they were just two separate artists who collaborated for one song only, never intending to pursue a career together as a group in the future.

Some users have suggested that the individual members' articles be kept but Group A's should be merged into the article of the song that they performed in the contest since they could've just been a collaboration (eg. Kanye West and Jay-Z, Brandy and Monica). However some have strongly opposed this and said that Group A still meet WP:BLP1E, WP:N, and WP:BIO1E so their article can never be merged or deleted.

Would it be alright to make a merger proposal for Group A's article despite the fact that it meets several notability guidelines? I don't really want to make a proposal that would be unsuccessful and unnecessary. 119.224.27.62 (talk) 23:03, 15 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

SUPER (software)

It seems this program may have issues. I tried to use it earlier and my anti-virus sent up flags. I tried to un-install and re-download and got more flags. See the talk page of the article at the bottom. I think what it needs is someone that knows computers better than I to find RS and possibly warn readers before downloading it. I did really like it, and have used it for many .ogg conversions for upload to commons, and I do hope to use it again. This is not Wikipedia's problem. If you can find reliable sources for specific issues by all means add something to the article. Otherwise I can only suggest you take up the issue with the manufacturer. This is the wrong forum for that type of question. The headrests I remember removing had a locking mechanism at the top of the seat. It may just be a tiny pinhole now like a non-powered disc removal from a CD drive. Shaunna Hall was born in Modesto in 1963, and moved away in 1964. She eventually moved to Daly City, Ca. in the San Francisco Bay Area in 1969, where she attended grade school through high school, graduating from Serramonte High in 1981. She moved into San Francisco's Haight Ashbury neighborhood in the fall of 1981.

The new messages banner is not made with Template:you have new messages. The real banner uses the usermessage class for styling and MediaWiki:Youhavenewmessages for the text, where $1 and $2 is filled in by the software. Example of the class styling:

You can change how the banner is displayed, for example by adding this to Special:MyPage/skin.css to get a less alarming background color:
