your DYK review of Aeroflot Flight 3519

Hi Kevin. I was just scrolling the DYK nominations and saw DYK Aeroflot Flight 3519 where it looked like you completed a review on Dec 26th. There is no green check mark tic next to it. If you meant that review was correct, maybe you could tick it so it will be promoted. — Maile (talk) 22:55, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Oops! I have gone ahead and fixed it right now, so sorry about that! Kevin Rutherford (talk) 23:55, 6 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

What was the point of this edit? Are you planning on writing all two-dozen Rochester subway station articles? (Also note that I changed the page links to the more common form of “Xxx subway station”.) Useddenim (talk) 01:36, 7 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. Also, I am also going to revert that edit and make some parenthetical revisions, as that is more common in the Northeast. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 01:47, 7 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think “(RS station)” is too cryptic, and would suggest “(Rochester)” instead, if you’re going to insist on not following the rest of the world. Useddenim (talk) 01:54, 7 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Also, using “Xxx subway station” allows the use of a standard template. Useddenim (talk) 01:57, 7 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That was actually one of the fixes that I implemented before you edited that template, but I also wanted to go with the parenthetical approach since a lot of the stations had some pretty common names, when compared to other stations in the world. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 18:26, 7 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Cut ‘n’ pasting the same two sentences over and over again is not writing an article, it’s just a lazy way of inflating your page creation count. (Also, Highland, Ashbourne & Elmwood were the only stations with 2 tracks; all the others had three or more. All stations except General Motors, East Avenue and Rowlands had an island platform. Canal Boats, Interurbans & Trolleys: The Story of the Rochester Subway has a detailed track map opposite p. 128.) Useddenim (talk) 17:01, 7 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I do plan on going back and expanding and correcting them a bit tonight, but not having that book certainly does put a damper on some of the expansion as I am limited to online resources. I just wanted to get them all out there and I ran into the issue of having two different maps say that they went by differing names, so that led to some confusion initially. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 18:26, 7 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Pages 45–93 of Ninety Four Years of Rochester Railways (which I added to References) also covers the subway. And—although I can’t find it off the top of my head—I’m sure there’s something somewhere in WP:MOS that says the station name in the {{Infobox}} shouldn't be in ALL CAPS. Useddenim (talk) 13:29, 8 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I was actually following what was done in Boston, but feel free to change it. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 17:45, 8 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The usual preference is go with the local style. MBTA signage uses centered all-caps on the line color so that's what MBTA articles use; Metro-North uses left-justified standard capitalization so that's what the articles use. Without any available images of station signage, centered with standard capitalization is a reasonable way to go. Pi.1415926535 (talk) 17:51, 8 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

But you've got to add some content. Repetition of that one sentence does not really make a series of articles. Where is each station located? What makes it unique? Does the structure still exist? Was it filled in? Do I need to go on? You should have done some research before you dumped this stuff. I am helping with this, although you have all been a little lazy. Signage style! Platforms! Let's have some real content. Secondarywaltz (talk) 04:27, 9 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I never said that I was done, as I only added the platform information. I have gotten someone in Rochester who is willing to snap photos for us, but I initially held off on street information since I didn't know on what side of the street the platforms were on. I did find an online source from 1948 that is useful, so I plan on using that once I decide to put some time into expansion. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 04:36, 9 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Good! I'm working with you on this. Have you tried Category:Wikipedians in Rochester, New York for help? Should we use old photographs under "fair use" since almost everything is gone? Secondarywaltz (talk) 04:44, 9 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I actually used the Education Program's internal pages, as I figured there might be someone at one of the schools there, and I discovered the professor who I mentioned there. She is interested in helping, and is willing to go snap some photos once the weather improves (so, April). We could use them as fair use (as I suspect some of the websites are already doing so), but I also noticed that the Rochester Wiki page for the subway has images we could migrate over here and someone should do outreach on this Flickr feed and see if we can get a few images on our site, as there are some stations in there. Wiki-PR edit warring

I do not know your "position" on Wiki-PR, so this is not a canvassing attempt. I would just like more eyes on the edit dispute taking place here and specifically here. I get the feeling that (as usual) Smallbones and Coretheapple are tag-teaming to keep a particular "revenge" POV in Wikipedia about paid editing, to the detriment of a wider NPOV perspective. Do your own analysis of the situation, and please weigh in on whatever side your conscience dictates. - I'm not that crazy (talk) 13:59, 9 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The article Clinton (RIRTR station) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

No evidence that this station was ever proposed. Reference given does not mention it. Not notable enough to warrant an article, even if referenced.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. My LOB edit

Hi, I might have been too terse in the description for my cleanup of the LOB disambiguation page. I removed the entry for Legislative Office Building since per the manual of style guidelines for disambiguation pages, each dab page entry should have exactly one bluelink.

New features for course pages

Several noticeable improvements to the EducationProgram extension (in addition to some small bug fixes) will go live on or around 2014-01-23:

Notifications

All participants in a course (students, instructors, volunteers) will receive Notifications whenever their course talk page is edited. Thus, editors can use course talk pages to send messages they want the whole class to be aware of, and the class participants are likely to see them.

Special:Contributions student notice

For users enrolled as students in courses that are active, a notice will appear at the top of Special:Contributions noting which course(s) they are enrolled in. This will make it easy for users who come across the work of student editors to find out that they are part of a course and identify other class participants.

Adding articles

Course instructors and volunteers will be able to assign articles to student editors, instead of all articles needing to be added by the student editors themselves.

Adding students

Instructors and volunteers will be able to add users as students in courses, instead of all student editors needing to enroll for themselves. This makes it easier to maintain complete lists of students, and also makes the extension more suitable for tracking participation in edit-a-thons, workshops and other collaborative projects beyond the Wikipedia Education Program.

If you have feedback about these new features, or other questions or ideas related to course pages, please let me know! --Sage Ross (WMF) (talk) 18:14, 22 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on AMARC (disambiguation) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G6 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an orphaned disambiguation page which either

  • disambiguates two or fewer extant Wikipedia pages and whose title ends in "(disambiguation)" (i.e., there is a primary topic); or
  • disambiguates no (zero) extant Wikipedia pages, regardless of its title.

Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such pages may be deleted at any time. Please see the disambiguation page guidelines for more information.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Template questions

Re: Infobox military installation/sandbox, the images work with or without using "file" with the image name, is that correct? - BilCat (talk) 15:44, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. I thought it would originally create an issue where "[[File:" would show up before it, once I converted the template, but this seems to not be the case. Also, you no longer have to put in a size, which is something also to note. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 15:57, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That's good. The reason I ask is that there is an issue with Template:Infobox Aircraft Begin. Last June, an editor unilaterally decided to remove the "File" from the image field. The problem is now that the infobox image does not display when viewing the old diffs of article from before the change. I've been trying to find somone who could fix the template so that the images with "File:" will display. Is that somthing you would be able to look into? If not, do you know someone who could? Thanks. - BilCat (talk) 16:58, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
That certainly is odd, and I am amazed no one reverted it. In the meantime, I have gone ahead and fixed it, so let me know if there are any other issues in the future! Kevin Rutherford (talk) 17:43, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks very much. We did discuss reverting it, but he'd already made changes to thousands of articles, and the consenus was to oeave it alone as it was thought to be harmless. I didn't discover until later that viewing the images in the history, but the damage was done. I didn't know how to fix it, and didn't know who to ask. So thanks for your help. - BilCat (talk) 18:55, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]
One more thing. Could you resize the default image bask to 300 px? It fits better in the infobox with the larger image size. Thanks. - BilCat (talk) 19:05, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Re: Question on a DYK

There were three factors that led to your suggested image not being used:

  1. Only one hook in each set can be placed into the image slot of a DYK set. As the number of nominations that include suggested images typically exceeds the number of available slots, this means that some image suggestions can not be used.
  2. There was a usable image associated with a special occasion request destined for the set your hook was used in.
  3. Your suggested image has problems with image clarity. While it is obvious that there is something being depicted (the bright white streaks and pink dots on an off-white background), it is not obvious what that something is when the image is viewed at the 100 x 100 pixel resolution used in DYK updates.

As to why your nomination was used in that set instead of being deferred to a different set where the image might have been used, there have been limited numbers of approved hooks available for use in upcoming DYK sets and many of the approved hooks pertain to articles with similar subjects. By the time you eliminate hooks with themes similar to those already included in the set (e.g. the set includes hooks for an English church and a German building, another hook about an English church would not have been an appropriate addition), your nomination was among the oldest usable nominations and was selected to help provide topical diversity to the overall set. Hope this answers your questions. --Allen3 talk 18:12, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Ah, I figured that might have something to do with it. It does feel weird to think it was one of the oldest nominations, as it was only two days old when you selected it. Thanks, again! Kevin Rutherford (talk) 19:31, 3 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Attack on Liberal Rights

Dear Kevin Rutherford,

I do not know how to use a talk page, but I am here to inform you that I do not appreciate your criticism on my latest work on the editing of a highly improper Wikipedia page. My changes to the Sonic-2 page were none other than an appropriate use of my powers as a Wiki user. I had edited out the improper grammatical terms and did some minor continuity editing and was informed that my changes were undone, and called "vandalism". As a Wiki user, I believe it is my right to protest such a dishonest and untruthful attack on my carefully crafted words of correction. I demand for my edits to remain, and for the Constitution Section regarding free speech to be henceforth quoted by you, on my talk page at a time in which I will decide at a future date. Thank you.

Thanks for the effort. I've made some attempts but haven't worked it out yet. — kwami (talk) 05:24, 5 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Kevin: I'm pretty sure that using the template editor right is supposed to involve more than quickly reading an edit request and making an edit (see "Expect to be held accountable for all changes you make"). The whole point of restricting changes of a template to those with an advanced right is to ensure that some sanity checking is done before changing widely used templates, and there was nothing in my comment that recommended making a change to {{val}}. At the time you copied it to the main template, the history of {{val/sandbox}} showed the last edit was at 8 April 2013. Johnuniq (talk) 06:15, 5 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I am well aware of that. As I said before, I messed up and misread it, as I am human. I am taking accountability for my actions and have admitted my mistake and want to work to correct it, so if you could notify me after you all are ready to go with the update, I will be more than happy to do it. I might even check it out later today, if I find the time. Kevin Rutherford (talk) 06:25, 5 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi @Go. Feel free to use anything here as a quote: We had a lovely turnout considering we weren't even sure we were going to be able to hold the event on short notice. Our hosts from the SMFA were fabulous; I would love to hold events there again should the opportunity arise. Our eight attendees were split between established editors and newbies… I spent a good amount of time tutoring individuals who needed assistance and basic introductions to Wikipedia markup. In all we created two new articles and improved four others during the event -- mainly these were biographies of individual artists. I was definitely proud to be a part of this well-coordinated event. It is high time that more women in the art world get the recognition they deserve. I will also say that in the past 18 months, the New England Wikimedians group has held a number of edit-a-thons focusing on closing the Wikipedia gender gap, and we look forward to continuing these efforts as the year progresses. Let me know if you need anything else! Girona7 (talk) 01:57, 6 February 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Dear,

I put a flag on the page because the article is infamous. I do not represent San Louigi. But this article is a cause of libel, is unfair, not neutral, citing only far-right sources and pro-roman-catholics. If Wikipedia is that sort of encyclopedia, I will regret to have participated to the French version since 2006.

How can I raise the issu with a moderator ? I do not threat Wikipedia, I just pointed out that it could be a source of diffamation case. If this is unfair, then ban me.
