Referencing errors on Crips and Bloods: Made in America

    Reference help requested.

Hello! I got a notification that I may have an error of one of the articles I recently copyedited here. The notification stated that one of my edits may have caused a duplicate page number error. I'm new to copyediting - not sure what this means and if someone could help me fix it (the bot also notified me that it might be a false positive - not sure how to check) Thanks!

    John Vitzileos (talk) 00:34, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Johnvitzileos: The bottom of the article displays a reference with a red error message:
Scott, Allen J. (1998). The City: Los Angeles and Urban Theory at the End of the Twentieth Century. San Francisco, California: University of California Press. p. 476. Retrieved 14 August 2015. {{cite book}}: More than one of |pages= and |page= specified (help)
The problem is that the reference says |page=476|pages=476. Only use one of the page and pages parameters. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:52, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: Thank you! Problem solved. John Vitzileos (talk) 00:57, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Johnvitzileos: You're welcome. Thanks for helping out. A couple more notes for a new copyeditor: When a message says "fix the errors highlighted" it should generally mean there is a red error message somewhere on the reported version (sometimes it has been fixed if you view the current version). And I suggest you enable "Show hidden categories" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering. This would show Category:Pages with citations using conflicting page specifications on the version with the problem. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:13, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Many problems with cut and paste merger without discussion (several articles)

Editor Lfstevens recently manually cut and pasted several pages. However, as i pointed out, the merging of several articles lacks in many regards (subjective content deletion, rewrite of lede per none RS, selective reference removal, just to name a few issues). The user edit history contains many summaries with merge, all appear to be not in line with WP procedure. The user also was notified on his talk page on August 12 by editor shoy to follow WP:Merge and contact admin Moonriddengirl, which he didn't. I also asked the editor to respond on his talk page.prokaryotes (talk) 05:22, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Here, it is mentioned that Dharma Malla is the son of Jayasthitimalla (King). But in 'Mahat' article, Dharma Malla is a younger brother of the king. I am not sure if they are two persons or Mahat article is wrong. Supdiop (Talk🔹Contribs) 08:08, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The sample code at the top of Help:Using the Wayback Machine didn't work for me

I've commented on the pertinent talk page, but upon creating that comment, that talk page warned me that "Talk pages in this namespace are generally not watched by many users. Please consider visiting the Help desk for a more prompt response or reviewing the Help contents for quick tips." So I figured I'd take their advice and flag it to the attention of the good users here.

    Thanks! --Mathieu ottawa (talk) 14:39, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I've fixed it. It resulted from a recent edit in which nowiki tags that were used in the code were displaying as what you should copy, rather than functioning for their intended purpose of making certain templates in the code not show their output.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 15:46, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Adding a copy of a UK Will to an article

this article - James Stevens lifeboats - is about a legacy left in a Will.

In the UK, once a person dies and the will is enacted, it becomes public information - for a small fee (£6) you can get a paper copy of any will - some are also available on-line.

I have a paper copy of the will which I have scanned and I wish to add a copy of the will to this article, but I have been unable to get the file to upload as I found the series of questions about copyright never let me. Help!

    James — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jrc.stevens (talkcontribs) 16:54, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I dont think you need an actual copy of the will in the article, you can mention it without actually linking or displaying it, any reason why you think the will is that important to display, the article already mentions the legacy without resorting to using the actual will? undoing a bulleted list command

    Hi:

Suppose I "cut and pasted" an item below from a previously prepared text file as shown below:

This is line 1 This is line 2 This is line 3

    This is line 3000

Then I clicked the "bulleted list" icon in the tool bar above to get a bulleted list. I got a bulleted list.

Then I wanted to boldface this list. So I selected the matter (all 3000 lines) and clicked the B icon above. I am only getting the first line bold-faced - not all.

Then I wanted to try by UNDOing the bullets so I can boldface the list first and then bulletize it.

How do we UNDO the "bullet command?" Thanks

    Vemurione (talk) 17:57, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I would copy it out into a word editing program and do a find > replace all changing * to *''' . you may want to put it into a table and add the closing ''' in the next column. But pray tell, what unusual circumstance is having 3000 lines of bold text? -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 18:43, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
If you want to do it within Wikipedia, you can press "Advanced" in the editing window and on the far right is a button called "Search and replace" which can do the same thing. But I agree that 3000 lines of bold is probably not necessary; which article/page is in question here? Bilorv(talk)(c)(e) 19:05, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
with regard to the "undo", you can just go to the page history and select the page prior to the change. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 20:40, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Articles created

Is there a way I can find out how many articles I have created?--Doug Coldwell (talk) 22:37, 15 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Yes. At the bottom of Special:Contributions/Doug Coldwell is a link labelled "Articles created" that should count the number of non-redirect pages in the main namespace you've created, although it doesn't work for me at the moment (xTools is a bit dodgy). But you can use the contributions page itself, checking the box "Only show edits that are page creations" (e.g. your created pages, your created articles). Based on this page, you appear to have created 683 pages, although the word "redirect" appears in the edit summaries for 263 of those creations, which would leave a maximum of 420 actual pages created. To use a different method, because you've created a lot of pages, you're listed at Wikipedia:List of Wikipedians by article count (#2136 at the moment), which counts 364 non-redirect pages you've created. I'm curious

So I'm curious about this this. Once upon a time, I noticed a personal phone number (or something like that) on some article and I posted here that this was a problem. A couple hours later I had a friendly message on my talk page notifying me that I should have emailed the Oversight Team, instead of posting here. Lesson learned in that case. My question is, when I see something like this, does that warrant an email to the Oversight Team? Or is this fine as it is? Thanks. Brycehughes (talk) 02:08, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

No need to contact oversight. For more information read WP:OS and this. This page is watched by many users, if you are unsure whether something should be suppressed, contact the OS and let them decide what to do. Supdiop (Talk🔹Contribs) 08:11, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Autumn Phillips

please help me - We (by "we" I mean my students!) have mucked up ref. number 5 on the above page - it is from an old newspaper report (1962) and we wish to maintain the quote too (trouble with access date I think) Also the page St. Thomas High School (Quebec) has the same citation incorrectly presented - the newspaper report is from 1962 - NOT 2015 as seen now in the references. Please keep in the quote too if you can

    Thanks Mikey 101.182.217.169 (talk) 05:20, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what you mean by "We..." but putting that aside for the moment, I've fixed the reference on Autumn Phillips. You were missing a pipe between two sections of the reference. Dismas|(talk) 05:55, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Marquess of Lansdowne

I have put in a subheading and linked it on the page above - is this OK? Also please put an accent over "nee" which appears twice in the new section titled "Prime-ministership of Great Britain and Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge". Thanks101.182.217.169 (talk) 06:39, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I'm not sure what you mean by "and linked it". As for the question about whether putting in a section heading is okay, if the heading gives the article a better layout then yes, that's fine.
As for the née concern, I've copied the word from our given name article and pasted it once (the only instance I could find of the word) in the Marquess of Lansdowne article. I use accented characters so infrequently that I don't bother with the "Special characters" menu above the edit box. It's easier for me to just copy them from some other page and paste them where needed.
By the way, as a matter of courtesy, it's nice to provide a link to the article that you're asking about in your question. That way those who are trying to help you can simply click the link to go to the article that you're referring to instead of having to go back up to the top of the page to use the search box.
And finally, since you're working with students, you may want to look over Wikipedia:Student assignments. That page and the pages linked from it might have resources which you find handy. Dismas|(talk) 08:08, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
On second thought, this Wikipedia:School and university projects might be a better starting point. Dismas|(talk) 08:25, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hi from Mike I have bungled a ref. for this page again! Create Citations

I would like to add a reference to an entry, but the instructions for adding references do not match my view of Wikipedia. the video on this page Help:Introduction to referencing/3 shows an "edit source" tab on the top right of the page. My page does not have that tab... Are there accurate instructions available?

    Mfreedman33 (talk) 13:17, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Mfreedman33: Some things can vary with user settings. If you only have an "Edit" tab then it has the same functionality as "Edit source". If you enable "Visual editing" at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-betafeatures then you get a choice between two tabs "Edit" and "Edit source", where "Edit" will be another way to edit using Wikipedia:VisualEditor. Most instructions are for source editing and do not apply to VisualEditor. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:29, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, if the instructions are not clear for the 'lay person,' then I am less interested in spending the time to finish my edit. It occurs to me that without some programming background, participating in Wikipedia can be difficult. Too bad as this limits participation the tech-savvy, and probably skews the aggregate view points in some ways that someone ought to study. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mfreedman33 (talkcontribs) 12:45, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Mfreedman33: VisualEditor is meant to be easier to use without writing markup code but there are mixed opinions about it and it has limitations. Experienced editors rarely use it but for some new users it may be easier to get started. It has documentation at Wikipedia:VisualEditor/User guide. In other places documentation is usually only for the source editor (also called the wikitext editor) unless VisualEditor is directly mentioned. If you use VisualEditor and ask for editing help then say you use VisualEditor. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:57, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Looking to create article but unable to do so

I am aiming to create an article biography on Eric Walker the former actor and music maker but am redirected to a disambiguation page with individuals with the same name. I can't find a link to an article creation page. I'd appreciate some help on this. Thanks--Nadirali نادرالی (talk) 18:50, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You need to use a different title for the new article, such as Eric Walker (actor) or Eric Walker (musician), and then you can add a link to that page on the disambiguation page. You aren't actually being redirected: there is no primary topic for Eric Walker, so Eric Walker is a disambiguation page. Bilorv(talk)(c)(e) 19:03, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Bilorv. Problem is that Eric Walker is a former actor and music producer, so what should I title him as in the brackets? I'm hoping to get it as Eric Walker or some other bracket title that could help me distinguish him from the other notable Eric Walkers. Thank you--Nadirali نادرالی (talk) 19:11, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

You can't just call him Eric Walker. That doesn't distinguish from the others. Is he better known as an actor, or as a musician? Does he have a middle initial? Robert McClenon (talk) 19:14, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Nadirali, I would suggest Eric Walker (actor). His music seems to be new and less notable, on a quick look. he page can always be moved later if that seems best. DES (talk) 20:18, 16 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

How To Request Merger Of Similar Atricles

    Hello ,

I found similar articles on wikipedia. 1. Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 2. Wild Life (Protection) Amendment Act, 2002

Wild life protection act 1972 article is available on wikipedia, there was an amendment in 2002 in Wild life protection act 1972.

One may say amendment which took place in 2002 (Wild Life (Protection) Amendment Act, 2002) is the part of Wild Life protection act 1972 (Wildlife Protection Act, 1972 - principal Act) and to be added in it.

How these two can be merged with each other as the amendment is part of principle act. Two write up on similar topic and again one is the amendment in the principle act - i am sure it is against the wiki policy and merger of both has been allowed. First of all, Ravitondak, if you are an employee or associate of this person of business, or a contractor, you have a conflict of interest and should not create such an article nor edit it if someone else does.
Secondly, make sure that you establish that the subject is notable. Follow our golden rule. Read Your First Article before starting to create a new article. Also read Referencing for Beginners, and perhaps citing sources. Remember that all content in any Wikipedia article should be supported by reliable sources. Notability, in Wikipedia, is derived coverage of the subject by independent reliable sources. This means no blogs, no fora, no press releases or stories that simply repeat press releases, no personal web sites. It also means no listings in directories or trivial passing mentions, but coverage of the subject in some detail.
Thirdly I advise you to use the article wizard. This will help guide you through the basic steps of creating an article, and an experienced editor will review your draft for suitability. I hope this advice is helpful. DES (talk) 11:00, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, Fourthly, don't worry about photographs until the article is created and has passed review. By that time you will be able to upload them. Remember that photos of living people must be released under a free license. Internet photos are usually not acceptable. DES (talk) 11:03, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

I've fixed it. Using the {{coord}} template in an infobox will never "activate" a location map. Many infoboxes have a "pushpin map" field that, combined with the fields for latitude and longitude, will produce a location map. In that particular infobox, however, one needs to use a {{Location map}} template. Deor (talk) 13:56, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    undelete of IFA Paris

So someone deleted the page about our fashion school IFA Paris: Talk:IFA_Paris because supposedly we didn't provide enough sources. We worked hard to fix the issues and checking our competitors, they all have pages which are full of passages that are uncited. Don't exactly know why we became a victim of deletion. The French and Chinese version of our page still exists.

So anyhow, we would like to reinstate our page and shorten it to remove all passages where we can't find reliable sources. This article should then be fine for Wikipedia. So, the question is how do we start this process and when can we start editing the page. Can someone help us and set everything up, and undelete the page IFA_Paris ? Thanks so much in advance and looking forward to some advice and assistance. Nikki38394724 (talk) 10:57, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The deletion discussion was at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/IFA Paris. I have changed the urls in your question to wikilinks. The French and Chinese Wikipedias have their own criteria; we have ours. Yes, there are articles about other subjects which shouldn't be here, or which contain unsourced material which should be deleted; Other stuff exists is not an argument for your article to exist when it doesn't satisfy Wikipedia's requirement for notability, as you were told at Wikipedia talk:Articles for deletion/IFA Paris. If at some stage in the future there is significant coverage of the school in published independent reliable sources, someone without a conflict of interest can write an article about it. --David Biddulph (talk) 11:26, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Nikki38394724, The article was deleted after a deletion discussion at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/IFA Paris. It will not be undeleted. You chose not to participate in that discussion, although you were aware of it. You were told, several times, that what was needed were reliable independent sources. None were supplied, nor were any found by the other editors who looked into the matter.
If you want to start over, you could do so via the article wizard and the Articles for Creation project. Using that route, the new draft article would be reviewed by an experienced editor before being approved and going live.
Or you could ask to overturn the deletion at deletion review. But I am confident that there is no chance that the deletion would be overturned in this case. DES (talk) 11:34, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
An underlying issue here seems to be that of promotion. Please be aware, Nikki38394724, that Wikipedia may not be used for promotion of any kind. If there are independent sources about IFA Paris, then there can be an article about it. But any such article should be based almost entirely on what those sources say. Neither you nor the school will have any control whatever over the article, any hint of promotional language in it is likely to be assiduously removed, and if some reliable sources happen to say anything critical or damaging about the school, those matters should and will feature in the article. --ColinFine (talk) 20:34, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Stuck on Wikipedia space quest

Hi can anyone help me with the third mission.

It says I need to edit typos, which I've done put in the summary title, what edit I've done then save. I've done this several times and it keeps telling me to save it.

Is this a glitch or am I doing something wrong?

    Thanks EmmaCook2015 (talk) 13:17, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@EmmaCook2015: I'm not familiar with The Wikipedia Adventure but I see you have many edits since this post. Have you solved the problem? PrimeHunter (talk) 14:09, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Need Help

I have created the article, which is deleted many times from English Wikipedia with required references and inline citations. I request any SYSOP to move this article to main page from my userpage. Note: Already this article exists in Tamil, Malayalam and Bengali Wiki pages. I guess that provides the notability. Thanks. --Dineshkumar Ponnusamy (talk) 16:31, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Note to HD volunteers: Article in question is Draft:Palam Kalyanasundaram Cyphoidbomb (talk) 17:32, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I see it has been submitted for review at AFC. If it is accepted there, someone will move it over the page protection for you. However, it still needs work. Claims like "He is the known first person in the world to spend the entire earnings of his life for a social cause." need a source. Also some of the awards are unsourced. Is he still alive? The article claims he donated his body and eyes; which would imply that he is dead, but the article doesn't have a date of death. The article also says he is the "founder of Palam", and it links to an article about a community, but later the article talks about a non-profit by the same name; I think the link is misdirected. Given that the article still cites some sources whose credibility was questioned at the previous AFD (namely the article from The Hindu), I'm not sure its ready for the move yet. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 17:45, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)Hello Dineshkumar Ponnusamy. I took a quick look at Draft:Palam Kalyanasundaram (it has apparently been moved out of your userspace to draft space). I don't have time at the moment for a through review of the cited sources, and how reliable they are, but a number of significant claims in the article still need citations. You should understand that each language-specific Wikipedia project has its own standards for inclusion, so there being an article about Kalyanasundaram on various other editions of Wikipedia does not at all mean that such an article is acceptable here. Here our guideline on notability of biographies or the General notability guideline must be satisfied. See the golden rule for a brief summary. Please also read Your first article and referencing for beginners. They will help you format the draft properly. DES (talk) 17:46, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Wherever you feel like improvement needs to be done, will do that, I do understand the principle of Wiki, I will update it. Thanks. --Dineshkumar Ponnusamy (talk) 17:50, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Removed AFC Tag now, will update it once all these issues resolved. --Dineshkumar Ponnusamy (talk) 18:25, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Uploading Photos

How do I upload photos to a page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dunkelnite (talkcontribs) 17:42, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Standard reply:
    • If you want to upload an image from your computer for use in an article, you must determine the proper license of the image (or whether it is in the public domain). If you know the image is public domain or copyrighted but under a suitable free-license, upload it to the Wikimedia Commons instead of here, so that all projects have access to the image (sign up). If you are unsure of the licensing status, see the file upload wizard for more information. Please also read Wikipedia's image use policy.
    • If you want to add an image that has already been uploaded to Wikipedia or Wikimedia Commons, add [[File:File name.jpg|thumb|Caption text]] to the area of the article where you want the image to appear – replacing File name.jpg with the actual file name of the image, and Caption text with a short description of the image. See our picture tutorial for more information. I hope this helps.Template:Z40--ukexpat (talk) 18:22, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The technical explanation of how to create a page is at Wikipedia:How to create a page. You might like to read Wikipedia:Your first article and WP:42 before creating an article, and new users may wish to use the Article wizard process. Be sure that any topics you write about are notable and cite reliable secondary sources. Bilorv(talk)(c)(e) 19:34, 17 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    shutdown the PARED Foundation reference

    Hi,

Please shut down the PARED Foundation page (Parents for Education)

There are people who are contributing to this page that are clearly giving incomplete and misleading information. On behalf of PARED Foundation, I am requesting Wikipedia to close down the PARED Foundation page as contributions to this page clearly comes from some parties that are bent on giving it a bad name.

    Vandalism on Wikipedia TR

I'm researching, reading encyclopedic books about Islamic caliphs (known as Amir al-Mu'minin) and posting on Wikipedia. But this user: Fenerli1978 is always deleting my researches those are encyclopedic. With sharing my sources too (book name, page, ISBN). And he doesn't respond my massages. What's the problem with wikipedia? Is it easy to give rights to a user to delete others hard work for no reason? I need an explanation. And someone has changed your TR contact page. @Scarfacethe: This is the English language Wikipedia and we have no influence over the Turkish Wikipedia. All the different Wikipedias are run independently with their own rules and guidelines. You'll have to take your disagreement back to the Turkish Wikipedia. Dismas|(talk) 04:15, 18 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Adding an image

I have a published biographical article on a living person and would now like to add an image of that person to the article.

I have read up on the licensing requirements for Wikipedia images. As none of the images identified by a Google search seemed to meet the criteria, I intend to contact the subject of the article requesting a photo for this specific purpose.

If the subject provides me with a photo in response to my request, am I free to then upload the image to Wikipedia and add it to the article? Should I word my request to the subject in a particular way to meet Wikipedia's criteria?

Hi, Does anyone have any tips on how to set up a company history/profile on here, if you are not a publicly listed company? At Yes and no#English grammar classification, there is a link to Wiktionary's page "Wortsätze". Following this link brings what is basically Wiktionary's redlink page; the word doesn't exist there. Which template, category, or other tagging method should be used to mark that the link leads nowhere? I'm only asking since keeping the link at "Yes and no" would be useful and relevant once "Wortsätze" gets a page, and thus I don't want to simply delete it. —烏Γ (kaw), 07:11, 18 August 2015 (UTC)[reply]
