Olivia Culpo (born c. 1992)[2] is an American actress, model, television presenter, cellist and beauty queen who won the Miss USA 2012 pageant, representing her home state of Rhode Island. She previously won the 2012 Miss Rhode Island USA competition, which was the first pageant she entered. Crowned Miss Universe 2012 in Las Vegas, she is the first winner from the USA to obtain the crown since Brook Lee in 1997.

Early life

Culpo was born in Rhode Island, one of five children of Peter and Susan Culpo.[2] She has two older siblings, Pete and Aurora, and two younger, Gus and Sophie.[2] Their restaurateur father co-owns Boston businesses including Parish Café and The Lower Depths Tap Room.[2] Raised in the Edgewood neighborhood of Cranston, Rhode Island,[3] She describes herself as of Italian ancestry.[4]

Culpo attended St. Mary Academy – Bay View, and, later, Boston University.[2] In 2010, she was signed by the Boston modeling agency Maggie, Inc.[2] She began studying cello in the second grade,[5] and played the instrument in the Rhode Island Philharmonic Youth Orchestra, the Rhode Island Philharmonic Chamber Ensemble, the Bay View Orchestra, and the Rhode Island All-State Orchestra.[6] She attended the Brevard Music Center, in North Carolina, for two summers, and has performed with the Boston Accompanietta.[6]

After winning the 2012 Miss Rhode Island USA competition, the first pageant she entered,[7] She went on to win the Miss USA 2012 pageant on June 3, 2012.[8]

On July 6, 2012, the city of Cranston, Rhode Island held a homecoming celebration honoring Culpo for her pageant win. At an outdoor ceremony held at Cranston City Hall, Cranston Mayor Allan Fung presented Culpo with the key to the city.[9][10][11]

Miss Universe 2012

Culpo represented the USA at the Miss Universe 2012 pageant that was held on December 19, 2012, in Las Vegas, Nevada. She won the competition and was crowned Miss Universe 2012,[12] becoming the eighth representative from the USA to win the title, the first since 1997. Culpo also became the first Rhode Islander to win the Miss Universe title. She succeeds outgoing titleholder, Leila Lopes from Angola.[13]

In January 2013, Culpo visited Indonesia for three weeks and helped crown the winner of Puteri Indonesia 2013 on February 1 in Jakarta. She also visited Yogyakarta, Surabaya and Bali during her visit. In Jakarta, Culpo hosted a discussion with young Indonesians for the United Nations Population Fund on HIV and youth prevention at the United States Embassy's cultural center @america.[14] Culpo also filmed publicity for YOU•C1000 while in Borobudur.

Culpo attended the 85th Academy Awards, The Oscars at Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, Los Angeles on February 24, 2013.

In March 2013, Culpo visited Russia along with Miss World 2012, Wenxia Yu of China to judge Miss Russia 2013 on March 2 in Moscow. On March 10, 2013, Culpo traveled to Chicago, Illinois for the launch of the CHI Magazine Spring/Summer Issue and the announcement ceremony of Miss CHI 2013.

On April 20, 2013, Culpo traveled to Louisville, Kentucky to make an appearance at Dillard's with Chinese Laundry.

In May 2013, Culpo traveled to Moscow, Russia for the grand opening of Rose Bar. It was also the premiere of Emin's new single, Amor featuring Culpo in the music video.

In June 2013, Culpo was invited to the annual party parade in Machala, Ecuador. On June 16, 2013, Culpo along with her boss, Donald Trump announced the date and location for Miss Universe 2013; Moscow, Russia on November 9, 2013, on stage during the Miss USA 2013 pageant. Culpo then visited Morocco. Olivia visited Niagara Falls.

On July 10, 2013, Culpo attended the 'Grown Ups 2' New York Premiere at AMC Lincoln Square Theater in New York City. On July 23, 2013, Culpo walked on the America's Got Talent pre-show red carpet with Miss Teen USA 2012, Logan West at Radio City Music Hall in New York City. Culpo also filmed a car chase through the streets of downtown Nassau, The Bahamas in mid-July. On July 27, 2013, Culpo played cello at the Rush Foundation’s 14th Annual Art For Life Hamptons Gala: “A Field Of Dreams” at Fairview Farms Bridgehampton, New York.

In August 2013, Culpo and Emin traveled to London, England for Miss Universe 2013 press tour. Emin will sing his new single Amor on stage with Culpo at the Southbank’s nearby Upper Ground on August 9 morning as part of ITV’s Daybreak free summer concert series. On August 25, 2013, Cranston’s City Council approved a resolution adding Culpo's name to Albert Avenue, which runs the length between Broad Street and Narragansett Boulevard in Edgewood.[15]

In September 2013, Culpo and her sister titleholders attended 2014 Spring New York Fashion Week from September 7 to 14. On September 10, 2013, Culpo walked in Sherri Hill Fashion Show held at Trump Tower. Culpo was in India from September 27 till October 6. During her visit, she reportedly ran into trouble after doing a commercial photoshoot at historic monument Taj Mahal.[16]

During her reign, Culpo traveled to Indonesia, Russia, Ecuador, Morocco, The Bahamas, Canada, England, India and numerous trips throughout the USA.

Personal life

Culpo plays with Boston Accompanietta.

In August 2013, she started dating singer Nick Jonas, whom she had met at the 2013 Miss USA competition. In June 2015, Jonas announced they had broken up.[17] In September 2015, rumors circulated of her dating Tim Tebow.
