Welcome—ask questions about how to use or edit Wikipedia! (Am I in the right place?)

Requesting a speedy deletion of an article nominated for deletion.

If an article is currently nominated for deletion, am I allowed to request it for a speedy deletion? Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 00:48, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

In reviewing the deletion policy, I don't see any rule against requesting speedy deletion of an article that is nominated for deletion. However, as the deletion policy states, speedy deletion should only be requested in the most obvious cases. If the article in question is Tommy Duggan (actor), I do not think that speedy deletion under A7 is appropriate and would let the deletion discussion run. If you have another article in mind that you did not nominate for deletion, then is there a specific reason that you want to end the deletion discussion? The only reason that I can think of why I would tag an article for speedy deletion when a deletion discussion is underway would be copyright violation. That is my opinion. Other editors may have other opinions. Robert McClenon (talk) 01:07, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Robert McClenon: I can understand that. By the way, speaking of deletion, I have nominated another article, Malick Bowens, for deletion. Unlike the Duggan article, I requested the Bowens article for deletion manually rather than the use of Twinkle. I think my request my request for deletion for the Bowens article is incomplete and that I forgot to do something. Hitcher vs. Candyman (talk) 01:22, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Your deletion nomination of Malick Bowens appears to be complete. That article is closer to being a candidate for A7, but I would still suggest letting the deletion discussion run. If in doubt as to what method to use to get rid of a cruddy article, use Articles for Deletion, which is a community process and is transparent. My own opinion is to use speedy deletion only if the article is in some way harmful, rather than because it isn't good or appropriate. Robert McClenon (talk) 02:18, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, @Westboulder:. Please see WP:COI, in general you shouldn't edit articles about yourself or other topics, where you have a "conflict of interest". You should post suggestions for changes on the article's talkpage. Please make sure to provide independent reliable sources for your information, and add the template {{request edit}} on top of your message text (see Template:request edit for more info). Other editors will look into your suggestion and implement it, if it is within Wikipedia's content guidelines. Such requests are usually backlogged, so it may take some time for your request to be answered by a volunteer. PS: I took the liberty and trimmed the looong title a bit :), such headers disrupt the table of content and are really hard to read. GermanJoe (talk) 01:55, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

The article in question is Mike the Mover. You have a conflict of interest with regard to editing the article yourself, but it is subject to the biographies of living persons policy. If you think that the article should be corrected, either go to the article talk page, Talk:Mike the Mover, or post a thread to the biographies of living persons noticeboard. The copyrighted sculpture Neptune Virginia Beach

Note: that per our naming conventions, the article under discussion has been moved to King Neptune (statue) -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 03:11, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings. I am Paul DiPasquale, author and sculptor of Neptune Virginia Beach - this is the registered copyrighted title. The sculpture has been owned by the City of Virginia Beach since 2005, however I retain copyright; of course I have that document. There is currently a Wikipedia site titled "King Neptune Virginia Beach" ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_Neptune_statue,_Virginia_Beach ). This was put up a while ago with no ill intent I believe by an employee at the Neptune Festival a 501-C3 organization also located in Virginia Beach. The information was mostly taken from my website, PublicSculpture.info and is cited as such. Other parts of it came from interviews done with me by press and other media publications (also pulling from my web site) and some of that information has clearly become misconstrued or confusing in its reporting and re-reporting. Parts of what is currently posted has been mis-interpreted and mis-understood. I found this out recently because a writer for the Virginia Beach publication "Sunny Day" who wants to write about the production of the Neptune Virginia Beach statue telephoned me and asked me to clear up her confusion over what she had read on the Wikipedia site. This prompted me to go to the site (first time I'd seen it). I was both surprised and perturbed.

For example, under "Fundraising and Dedication" section is this sentence which ends that paragraph:

"DiPasquale’s initial plans for the statue’s makeup led to low cost expectations, but the materials were deemed unable to withstand heavy storms and were then replaced by more an expensive metal in bronze."

The writer has confused the choice and use of the clay vs. plaster and wood for use in constructing the full scale working model which will then be molded and cast with the end result of producing the full scale statue in bronze.

So, I rewrote most of the writing on this site, making factual corrections about what materials were used or planned for use, when various processes were done, etc. I gave this to my assistant to upload on Wikipedia and that hasn't worked well... so far. Red Flags went up. My assistant explained to Wikipedia that she works for me and the response was that her "data may be biased". Meanwhile, much of the previous information on the site has been taken down and the notice "This section does not cite any reference sources" is at the top of the page... but the above quoted sentence still remains.

So, as the designer, author and copyright holder of this sculpture, Neptune Virginia Beach, am I not a reliable source? Can I not make corrections starting with the incorrect title of my work? My re-write is in the same format as what is/was on the site. If I try to upload this under my Wikipedia Account as opposed to my assistant's account will that work? Or perhaps the better solution would for me to put up a new entry, properly titled, and request the removal of the wrongly titled posting? I would greatly appreciate your direction here and then my assistant and/or I will follow the proper Wikipedia channels to get this correctly posted. Thank you. Dipasqualepublicsculpture (talk) 02:02, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Dipasqualepublicsculpture: If the content of the article is based primarily upon your webisite, that is problematic as articles should based primarily upon what third parties have discussed about the subject of the article. And no, as a person/site with a conflict of interest what you say is considered "reliable" only for certain limited content -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 02:07, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Read the conflict of interest policy and the dispute resolution policy. If you think that the article has errors, you or your assistant should discuss on the article talk page, Talk: King Neptune statue, Virginia Beach. I do not see any recent discussion of the edits made by your assistant. Robert McClenon (talk) 02:10, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
You are also welcome to insert the template {{accuracy}} at the top of the page, which will add the following notice: This article's factual accuracy is disputed. Please help to ensure that disputed statements are reliably sourced. See the relevant discussion on the talk page. This will put readers (and other editors) on notice that portions of the article may not be accurate, and that you have some information to contribute to its improvement (on the Talk page). This does not change the fact that one or more reliable sources (other than you) are needed for any information added or changed in the article, but will encourage other editors to help find such sources. Wiki Ed

I'm not sure where to post this question, but I noticed recent edits to O Street Market by a student editor. The recent edits are problematic (WP:WEIGHT, WP:TONE, etc.), but I'm not sure if this is some type of test for the student (Wikipedia:Wiki Ed/Bucknell University/Too Much Information (Fall 2015)) and the professor will be checking the article? If I remove some of the content, is this considered discouraging the Wikipedia:Education program? The program must have started during my four year hiatus because I'm not familiar with it. I cannot see how the status of the editor impacts the validity/quality of their edits in any way. If the edits are inappropriate, revert them. Rwessel (talk) 07:18, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, if there were student editors taking test it should be done in project/user space anyway. Mlpearc (open channel) 07:24, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The page for this class of students is here. I have had a look at the edits made by a few of the other students: they were generally good. But I think that the best thing to do with MikeMc95's edits is to revert them wholesale. (As well as the issues mentioned above, I suspect them of being a copyvio; but the referencing is so poor that I can't check.) Maproom (talk) 09:17, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
While I agree with the answer given by@Rwessel:, I fully support the decision by @AgnosticPreachersKid: to check in to see if something had changed. By the way welcome back APK. I see you have sorted the date out - the other problem was that you had used both the page and pages parameters - I have removed the pages. If you look at the diff you provided in the title above, each of the red-text points in the references section has a "help" in blue after it - clicking the help leads to an explanation of what is wrong with that parameter. - Arjayay (talk) 10:56, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I can see, the text which you have specified in the | chapter= parameter is correctly displayed for each of the two instances where you have used it in Alasdair Drysdale#Book chapters. Perhaps you can explain in more detail what you think the problem is? --David Biddulph (talk) 16:35, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I thought the editors would have been listed after the title of the book.Gomach (talk) 17:12, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I don't understand, if your question is about editors, why not ask about the editors and not ask about chapters. That said, the template will display the information in whatever order it is set to. You can put the parameters in any order that you like within the source of the article but how it's displayed is up to the template. If you feel that the order that it gets displayed in should be changed, then you should bring that up for discussion on the talk page for the cite book template. 3-I went to the Court of Appeal in New York, but confirmed the judgment of the Dispute Tribunal to UNRWA to exceed three years deadline .

As for the content of the decision of termination, I enclose a copy with him and discuss and refute the grounds set out in it according to the instructions relief in force at the time. If you would like to help me deliver my voice to the Secretary-General of the United Nations to achieve justice and fairness and erosion authoritarianism and centralization and personal interests of senior staff I will send you all official documents relating to this issue

    Vandalism on my talk page

Hello. A week ago, a user named: "Come my body" was given a warning for his consistent vandalism. He removed it. I undid his edit, thinking that you shouldn't remove these kinds of warnings on your talk page. He undid my edit. I undid his. However, some users intervened and said I should stop, and I did. A user called: "NeiN" told me that he could remove the warning if he wanted to. I then thought that through and thought it was right. I accepted his statement without replying to him.

A week later (today), Come my body vandalized my talk page, adding pictures of middle fingers. I undid his edit, with the summary: "Undoing vandalism". He undid my edit. I undid that edit again, saying: "I apologize for what I did to your talk page a week ago, but I want an explanation." He stopped, but added a message saying: "You said you apologized? No, you didn't." I just did in that summary.

Is there any help that anyone could give me on this situation? Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pezminer12 (talkcontribs) 18:08, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Pezminer12: It is not clear what type of help you need, can you be more specific ? Mlpearc (open channel) 18:17, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Mlpearc: Sorry, I was just wondering if there were any tips on how I could avoid possible incidents like this in the future. Pezminer12 (talk) 18:22, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The original poster appears to want advice on how to deal with a troll. First, with a very few exceptions, an editor has the right to remove talk page warnings, and Come on body had the right to do that. Second, administrator Floquenbeam has issued a final warning. Third, in general, trolls can be reported at WP:ANI. (In my opinion, it wasn't simple vandalism that is reported at WP:AIV.) However, in this case, asking for advice here has had the desired effect of reporting the troll. Robert McClenon (talk) 18:28, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c) The user vandalizing your page has been blocked indefinitely by User:NeilN. Neil was correct to tell you last week that people can remove block notices and warnings from their own talk pages, but when you run across trolls like this, they'll find some way to pester you no matter what you do. Reporting them to WP:AIV usually (not always, but usually) results in a fairly quick resolution (I disagree with the comment above that this wasn't appropriate for AIV); until they're blocked, just ignore them and wait to remove their vandalism until once they've been blocked (to avoid wasting your time). Does that help? --Floquenbeam (talk) 18:30, 11 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
@Pezminer12: One thing you generally need and should do to situate yourself properly to ask for a block at WP:AIV is warn the user, using an escalating series of warnings, and then ask for a block shortly after the conduct continues, following a final warning. This is not mechanical rule blindly followed. You can start with higher level warnings depending on the degree of the conduct, and many admins will block for truly egregious edits without a "full series", but doing this consistently will serve you well. WP:WARN contains a listing of most you might need for any given situation.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 03:47, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Oh, ok. Thank you for telling me where to report trolls. I totally acknowledge that users can remove talk page warnings if they want to. I'll keep this in mind in the future. Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pezminer12 (talkcontribs) 13:44, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Davidbpearson: Hi David, if you wanted to link that, you would write

    which would result in this
    [1]
If you wanted to give it a title, such as "Lorem Ipsum", you would write this
    [http://www.busterkeaton.com/Films/A01_The_Butcher_Boy.html Lorem Ipsum]
    which would result in this
    Lorem Ipsum
If you wanted to use it as a reference, you should check through Template:Cite web and use those guidelines. Please also note that when linking to Wikipedia pages within Wikipedia, you should use four square brackets ([[Lorem ipsum]], resulting in Lorem ipsum) rather than a full URL. @NewHeights1: given that in order to have a wikipedia article, the subject must meet some minimum requirements like having had significant coverage about the subject in reliably published sources that are independent from the subject and it doesnt appear that any news organization has written about the subject at all, it is unlikely that anyone can help "fix" that.

Help:Cite errors/Cite error references duplicate key

see Battle of Buna–Gona there is one cite error in this article. It has only just 'appeared'. Tried pasting the first over the second to make them identical but didn't work. Help! Cinderella157 (talk) 23:39, 12 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Cinderella157: The error message comes from a check recently added to the MediaWiki software. It's supposed to report different definitions of the same ref name but in this case the article has two identical:
    {{sfn|Blakeley|1956|p=67|ps=. Cited in Advance to Buna – Part 2 of The 32nd 'Red Arrow' Infantry Division in World War II.<ref name=32ndDiv/>}}
The use of {{sfn}} creates the ref name FOOTNOTEBlakeley195667. The nested reference <ref name=32ndDiv/> apparently causes an error not currently covered by the linked help page Help:Cite errors/Cite error references duplicate key (written by me). There has always been limitations on nested references. This looks like a new limitation. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:24, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    How to create push-pin-map location

How do I add Olema, CA, USA as a push-pin-map location for the infobox on Sir and Star? I already added CA and USA. Just need to know where to add data for Olema. Where does Lua pull that info from? Lua reports a big red error if I try Olema or any nearby towns.

    The coordinates are:

    • latitude = 38.040744
    • longitude = 122.787743

    Ping me back. Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk} 00:37, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

@Checkingfax: if you want to put a pushpin map for Olema, then you need to create it, it currently doesn't exist. All available locmaps are listed here. --Edgars2007 (talk/contribs) 08:27, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Edgars2007, I guess I assumed the pushpin_map parameter in the infobox hotel or restaurant template would place the pushpin via the existing California map. Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk} 08:32, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Edgars2007, Turns out I had the longitude wrong. Once I put a minus sign in front of it like this:
    • latitude = 38.040744
    • longitude = -122.787743
The pushpin popped right on to the California map in the right place. Sir and Star uses template:infobox restaurant for the pushpin map. The map won't show up at all if the parent template of template:infobox hotel is used instead. See below too. Cheers! {{u|Checkingfax}} {Talk} 04:07, 14 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Jobbik (political movement)

Your website claims that Jobbik is "far-right." This is illogical as they have repeatedly condemned capitalism, which in its nature is "far-right." If you can provide the information that Jobbik is either a capitalistic movement, or is misrepresenting their position, please feel free to send it to me. If you are unable to do so, I will assume that most of the website is bogus if wikipedia cannot get something that simple correct. Wikipedia goes by what reputable published sources have said. It tends to disregard what subjects of articles say about themselves, as less reliable. The Jobbik article has ample references (including all those currently numbered 22-29) showing that Jobbik is regarded as "fascist", "neo-Nazi", etc. And no-one here cares what you imagine. Wikipedia language editions vary in many respects and some are very small with few features. The Danish Wikipedia (my native language) has a weekly article on the main page, and it doesn't need featured article status. There is also a daily article but that is a daily Scandinavian article in another language. The Scandinavian languages are very similar. Some Wikipedias don't have a concept of featured articles. Some Wikipedias have a static main page, maybe only very small Wikipedias. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:07, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia does not have diaries, so if you did read it somewhere on Wikipedia yesterday, and cannot find it today, it is likely because the content was removed as inappropriate content for an encyclopedia.
You might want to check out Wikisource where it is possible that diary would be appropriate. Link to Wikisource home page -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 19:16, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

We can only include information that has already been published in reliable sources and given the fame of the man, I am sure the biographers will have tried every avenue. If you think there is information we have not covered, then please suggest what, and where it is cited, on the article's talk page Talk:Babe Ruth which has quite extensive archives, which may already covered additional information you want adding. To be pedantic, Sibling#Half-sibling (without an s on the end of the section name) is the working link to the section concerned. --David Biddulph (talk) 16:03, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Could you please explain what you mean by "Wikipedia's stance" - where, and in which article, are you wanting to use, or remove, half-brothers and/or half-sisters?
I do not know of a specific guideline, but one recent dispute was the inclusion of half-brothers/sisters and sister/brother-in-law in the relatives section of the infobox at Kendall Jenner
There were numerous names in this earlier version - until it was agreed that they would all be removed. - Arjayay (talk) 16:39, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The article is Darrelle Revis. The "embryonic" editor wants to add halfs which have not been verified. So, its not really an issue there. But it raised the "who is a sibling and who isn't a sibling" question in my mind....for other future articles that I might create or edit. It's a slippery slope and I wondered if any editors had seen some discussion on the topic. Buster Seven Talk 19:02, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
The Kendall Jenner is a good example for a situation where every fact of lineage and heredity is established and verified and agreed to by all the parties. But what about when parenthood is ambiguous or denied by one of the parents (usually the father)? Do we allow it in an article? Just curious. Buster Seven Talk 19:08, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
It is probably not appropriate to cover contested/alleged children of a parent in the article of the recognized child. WP:UNDUE / WP:COATRACK . Unless the recognized child who is the subject of the article has specifically engaged in the discussion of their alleged siblings in a notable manner, over a significant period of time as covered by the reliable sources. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 19:26, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Example: Lee and Pat are married and have a child, Lou. Chris alleges an affair with Pat and that Chris' child Stevie is a result of that affair, which is denied by Pat. The articles about Pat and Chris may cover the alleged paternity of Stevie, if reliable sources cover the allegation. The articles of Lee and Lou should generally not cover the allegations about Chris and Stevie. The article about Stevie should not proclaim Lou as a sibling, although with sources, it would be proper to say Pat is the alleged parent. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 19:34, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Redirecting Niqqud versions of every Hebrew letter to the article about the letter

    Hi,
I did this as an example; redirecting heth with niqqud to the article heth. I request all the Hebrew letters with niqqud versions to redirect to the article about that specific letter. The reason for this request is this, let's say somebody visited the article Uzziah and saw the original version of the name in Hebrew with niqqud. He wanted to learn the letters which makes the word Uzziah by copying and pasting those letters in the search box, so he pasted Ayin with kubutz. And the result is nothing.-- İskenderBalas💬 18:11, 13 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]

    Half-italicizing titles

I want to change Bellator MMA in 2015 so only the first two are italicized. It seems to be fully italic because of a transclusion from the TV Infobox template. I figured out I can "noinclude", but that only seems to work on the source, and I don't want to ruin all the show articles that need italics. I see something about parentheses in the Italic Title template, but wouldn't want to move the page to something that will be overriden by the infobox transclusion, giving me just an italic (Bellator MMA) in 2015.

Any ideas? InedibleHulk (talk) 06:19, November 14, 2015 (UTC)

    Beautiful, thanks! I'll fix 2016. InedibleHulk (talk) 06:43, November 14, 2015 (UTC)
@InedibleHulk: Um, I think a relevant question is, why should the term be italicized at all? It is italicized neither in the text of that article nor in the text of the main Bellator MMA article. We don't italicize names of companies or organizations, which is what sports promotions seem to be. Cf. WWE, etc. Deor (talk) 13:30, 14 November 2015 (UTC)[reply]
For the longest time, it was the name of the promotion and the TV show it produced, regardless of the event number featured in it. It doesn't hold house shows. But now it seems the name for the weeklies is Bellator MMA Live and they have special names for their big "tent-pole" events. So yeah, I suppose we don't need italics anymore. InedibleHulk (talk) 13:48, November 14, 2015 (UTC)
Though TV Guide still also goes with plain Bellator MMA. It's a mystery. InedibleHulk (talk) 13:51, November 14, 2015 (UTC)
