    Bill.com page

Hi there. I'm fairly new to updating Wikipedia pages, but last Friday afternoon I edited a company page I represent (Bill.com) and when I checked back in this morning, it was reverted back to how it looked last week. Why is that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by YaldaSG (talkcontribs) 01:44, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

YaldaSG Your edits were unsourced; all information must be sourced to an independent reliable source. As you state you are a company representative, you should not directly edit the article about your company; instead, you should propose changes with edit requests(click for instructions) on the article talk page. You may also want to use the new user tutorial to learn more about Wikipedia.
You will also need to review and comply with the conflict of interest and paid editing policies; the latter is a Wikipedia Terms of Use requirement and mandatory. 331dot (talk) 01:54, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Morgellons orchestrated misdiagnosis delusional parasitosis

Why is user allowed to write an article on a health related subject that they are neither accurate or up to date in their information. The page is locked so other members of the public cannot edited and address the subject fundamentally labelling sufferers and playing doctors or God to an extent. Fact is there's plenty legitimate information and evidence to establish Morgellons as an organic condition not pyschriatric as it's being rolled out as discrediting sufferers unfairly. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2A01:4C8:140D:F21D:1:2:68A0:C1EF (talk) 02:55, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Wikipedia:Wikimedia_Foundation_error WORKAROUND Hxc2, Hx3 @ CP/M

Please delete the Hx2 and Hx3 sectional identifiers in CP/M. The WFEM messages I've encountered in the past 48 hours should be trackable via the edit logs for CP/M and PL/I. Aside from the Hx2 and Hx3 tags, there are no article content problems as of this moment. I mentioned PL/I only because of yesterday's problems. Just a wild guess: someone changed a parameter somewhere; I've edited larger articles in the past without any of this. Pi314m (talk) 07:06, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

(it would seem that the edit I just did to replace the deleted image in Musar literature could have been done by the nominator, or one of the discussees)

User page said not to exist ("Wikipedia does not have a user page with this exact name")

    Hello,

My name is Louis, and I have contributed to Wikipedia over several years under the user page 'Llouest', both in the English and French versions, and I receive regular Wikipedia messages on my 'Llouest' user page.

My question is related to my account and user page, under the alias 'Llouest': every time I open the English version of Wikipedia I get the following notification: "Wikipedia does not have a user page with this exact name. In general, this page should be created and edited by User:Llouest. If in doubt, please verify that "Llouest" exists. Start the User:Llouest page.".

Why is it so, and how to correct it?

    Please advise,

    Thanks,

Louis — Preceding unsigned comment added by Llouest (talkcontribs) 13:23, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Llouest, this is because you have not created a Userpage for yourself. The userpage is distinct from your User Talk page. Your Userpage is used to describe yourself, while the User Talk page is just a talk page. If you write a userpage, the warning will disappear. Hope this helps! Jeb3Talk at me hereWhat I've Done 13:26, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It is telling you simply that you have not (yet) created a user page here on enwiki. The place where you have received messages is your user talk page, not your user page. You don't need to have a user page, but if you want one the guidance on appropriate content is at WP:User pages. --David Biddulph (talk) 13:32, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) You do have a user page on the French WP – fr:Utilisateur:Llouest but this is only visible there. As Jebcubed says, create a page at user:Llouest and the message will disappear. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 13:36, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Llouest: It's also possible to use a single user page across all Wikipedias, but it's not a good idea and I don't know the details. The problem is that each Wikipedia has its own rules and conventions for user pages, and what is acceptable on one may not be acceptable on another. Therefore, a separate user page on each will work a lot better, but feel free to add links on each of your user pages to the others. -Arch dude (talk) 00:30, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude: The process is described at WP:Global user page. --David Biddulph (talk) 03:07, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Bulleted list – line spacing problem

Does it only seem so, or is there, in fact, a – slightly – larger line spacing here between the first and the second (indented) line – as opposed to the one between the latter and the third line? If so, why exactly is that and how can that be avoided?--Hildeoc (talk) 14:52, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This is a part of the CSS, lists (including sublists) get a slight padding on top: Wikipedia:Village pump (technical)/Archive 154#Inconsistent line spacing between list levels. I also feel that this padding should be removed, should maybe be proposed at MediaWiki talk:Common.css. – Thjarkur (talk) 15:25, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Difference between Undo and Reverting

What is difference between undo and reverting — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dq209 (talkcontribs) 15:08, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

They are usually synonymous. Often revert means "reinstating a previous version" while undo is an action in the Wikipedia software that tries to undo a single edit while automatically resolving conflicts. – Thjarkur (talk) 15:35, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Pronunciation

I've seen that some articles, especially biographies, contain ogg files that are labeled "pronunciation" immediately following a name. Where is the process of providing pronunciation within an article described, both technically and policy-wise. If I find an article that uses a transliterated word, in particular a name that was originally in a different alphabet, how should I proceed to add, or get someone else to add, a playable pronunciation? ...Thank you.... jg (talk) 17:49, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Jgog2: I have produced a number of these .ogg pronunciation files over the years. I'm happy to provide you with more detailed help directly if you wish, but the basic process is:
    • Using a microphone connected to your computer, and a sound recording program, capture a sound file of yourself pronouncing the word/phrase. (I use a free one called HardDiskOgg, which supports various formats including .ogg.)
    • Using a digital audio editor, edit the recording to remove excess noise, enhance volume etc., then save in .ogg format. (I use Audacity, also free.)
    • Upload this file to Wikimedia Commons using an appropriate upload template, and add to appropriate categories. Use existing pronunciation files on Commons as a guide.
    • It is useful to include brief details of your accent, especially in cases where the word's pronunciation can vary regionally. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 18:16, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
A couple more points: it is conventional to prefix the file name with the codes representing the language and regional variation in which the word is spoken: e.g. File:En-uk-Brighton.ogg (one of mine) indicates that it is an English word spoken in British English. Similarly En-us, En-au … etc. Then use a template such as {{IPAc-en}} to embed the recording in the relevant Wikipedia article. The lead sentence of Birmingham is a good example. Hassocks5489 (Floreat Hova!) 18:24, 19 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    .
Some of your bullet points look like they could start entire articles themselves.
This outline is very helpful though.
    Thank you very much.

If your subject Seth Mai Dayal is notable by our specific definition (see:WP:N) then we want a Wikipedia article, and we will help you make it better. If he is not notable, we will delete any such article, no matter how good it is otherwise, so please start by finding reliable sources (WP:RS) that establish his notability before you waste your time and ours on a futile effort. Good luck! I hope you succeed. -Arch dude (talk) 14:08, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Referencing

    Dear Everybody

I submitted an article by means of "paste and copy". The article was extensively referenced (74 endnotes. To my dismay I discovered that all references (numbers in text at the appropriate places) disappeared from the text on the Wiki page. I then "pasted and copied" all my references in the section "References", but there was (of course) no connection to the main text. I then got a message from one of your editors to the effect that my text was not acceptable because it lacked references. Is there a way to insert the text with references into the Wiki, or do I really need to go through the (complex) process of referencing you outline on your "help pages" all over again? I should like to add that I hold a PhD in Philosophy and have published some books, so am very familiar with the process of and need for referencing.

    Donations

I am more than willing to help Wikipedia.org remain completely free of external influences, but I would like to know that this organization will remain 100% unbiased concerning any and all information it posts. I also understand that all people are biased to some extent, but I believe that having to oppositely biased people proofread an article is another way to remain unbiased. Free information is the greatest gift we can give our children, and that information’s accuracy is my greatest concern.

-respectfully, Taft J. Green of NC — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2600:1004:B03E:6347:BC91:50D1:7F73:191C (talk) 15:13, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Article editors are all volunteers, the Wikimedia Organization mainly covers legal and hosting and does not intervene in content matters. The foundation has enough money as it is and does not need more donations, the best way you can help would be to become an editor yourself :) – Thjarkur (talk) 15:19, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Taft. I'm not quite clear what response you are looking for, but if you are wanting to make a suggestion for improving how Wikipedia operates, the best place to do that is the Village Pump - probably the "Proposals" section. --ColinFine (talk) 16:00, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
100% unbiased is an impossible standard for pretty much everything. Clarityfiend (talk) 21:01, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
All Wikipedia editors (about 100,000 of us in the last 30 days) are unpaid volunteers, each of whom does whatever they wish to do, subject only to review by other editors who try to correct any breach of our policies and guidelines by reverting edits and discussing them to reach consensus (WP:BOD). This chaotic process is surprisingly effective. You are an editor, and you wish to counter bias in articles. You will be most effective by actually editing biased articles to add reliably sourced (WP:RS) opposing views and by removing unsourced biased statements. You can also add {{npov}} tags, but that is the lazy approach: you are merely asking other editors to do the work. You can also join the WP:Countering systematic bias project if you feel it addresses the sort of bias that concerns you. -Arch dude (talk) 16:01, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Since it is sourced, it can stay, the artical appeaers to be netural to me. Second, you have what is called a Conflict of Intrest. You need to decalre this on your userpage and follow the guidelines outlined on WP:COI. I hope I was able to answer your question to your satisfaction. LakesideMinersCome Talk To Me! 15:39, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Link: Stuart Waiton. You can for example start a discussion at Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons/Noticeboard and request input on whether this is valid for inclusion, but since Wikipedia summarizes what reliable sources have said and reliable sources give disproportionate attention to "controversies", our articles do sadly often end up just summarizing whatever controversies people may have been involved in (Wikipedia:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing). – Thjarkur (talk) 15:42, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
All right, the first insinuation was a WP:BLP violation since it did not involve you directly. The second insinuation is reliably sourced, but I've reworded it in sentence form rather than as a collection of quotes. I don't believe collections of quotes belong in any BLP, collections of quotes always sound like attacks or ridicule even when they include the same information as the prose form. – Thjarkur (talk) 16:08, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

(It would be very helpful if people asking about details in a particular article told us which of our six million articles they were referring to, instead of leaving us to guess). The usual answer to "Why isn't X in Wikipedia" is "Because nobody has put it in". Yes, Wikipedia auto-capitalizes the first letter of all pages. User:martin of sheffield isn't a link to your userpage while User:martin of Sheffield is. The ping system looks for new links to userpages. – Thjarkur (talk) 23:09, 20 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    TRADEMARK

    Greetings,

I own a registered trademark of a Wikipedia page & I would like to inquire about protecting the page. I have just joined the Wiki family and I am therefore not an administrator nor did I originally create this page.

Earl — Preceding unsigned comment added by Earlborgert (talkcontribs)

Earlborgert I'm afraid that we cannot protect a page for this reason. Please read WP:PROTECT. We do not protect a page because the owner of the trademark of what the page is discussing asks us to. --MoonyTheDwarf (Braden N.) (talk) 14:27, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Earlborgert: You do not own the trademark of a Wikipedia page. You may own a trademark or servicemark of a term that is used as the title of a Wikipedia article, but that gives you no rights whatsoever with respect to the contents of a Wikipedia article. In general, use of a trademark or service mark by Wikipedia in this manner does not infringe the trademark or service mark, but if you feel otherwise, you are free to tell us and we can address your concerns. You are also free to threaten to take Wikipedia to court, but if you do you are then immediately prohibited from using or editing the Wikipedia site until you retract the legal threat or the case is resolved. "http" web address preventing citation from being added

Hello! I am trying to add a citation to the Census Organization of India to the Sorde Village article. However, for understandable reasons, Wikipedia does not like the http address. Is there anyway to include he link or should I just revise the web page citation as if it were a paper source? Thank in advance for any help! AugusteBlanqui (talk) 14:57, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

That site is blacklisted. All that advertising that makes up most of that page seems might unlikely for a legitimate government census report. Perhaps a better source is in order? Perhaps from http://censusindia.gov.in/? Not the same as www.census2011.co.in.

Why is the Wiki edit amount page in another website?

     Done Hello, everyone.

I would just like to know why my edit count is on an external page and not a page inside of Wikipedia itself. I know this is a stupid question, but I would just like to know. Thanks! :D Nambaseking01 (talk) 18:43, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Fixing all-caps

1st Supply Battalion has a lot of uppercase. Is there a way to fix this without manually retyping? MB 18:51, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The problematic text was added only today, so I have reverted the additions and pointed the editor towards MOS:CAPS. The material added was copied from an external website, but I'll leave someone else to ascertain whether the site concerned is PD. --David Biddulph (talk) 19:04, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

    Block my Talk page

Since, as you told me, I can't delete my wikipedia account as I requested, and I am not planning to do the contributions anymore, would you "ban" the editor Theroadislong from my account and specifically from my Talk page. I don't want he followed me after deleting my article, and attacking me. It was not my expectation when I wanted to do my contributions to wikipedia. What is disappointment. And I don't want to have any discussion with this editor, or read his input about me, I am done. Please help me with it. Thank you, Toreeva (talk) 19:46, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You are free to respond with "User X, please don't write to me again here" on your talk page, users usually respect that request. But it's probably not necessary since there is little reason to contact users on their talk page if they are no longer active editors. – Thjarkur (talk) 20:03, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
No it does not work, bec. I wrote that I don't want any discussion anymore, or Stop talking.. Does not work. Please do "ban" of that editor, not only from Talk page but also from my name, so I will not get any response in the future. Hope you understand my request. Regards,Toreeva (talk) 22:02, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Toreeva, Theroadislong has not edited your talk page since the 16th November. --ColinFine (talk) 22:50, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I have not once attacked Toreeva or deleted her article? The article Natalia Toreeva has been deleted nine times, twice at WP:AFD none of the nominations were mine. The user does appear to have a fundamental miss-understanding of how Wikipedia works especially with regard to reliable sources. Theroadislong (talk) 23:05, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
This might be better off at the administrators' noticeboard if I'm not misunderstanding the request, if the user hasn't been previously respecting your requests. – John M Wolfson (talkcontribs) 23:21, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

This is indeed the wrong venue for this complaint, ANI is where you would need to go to seek a remedy like the one you are asking for. However, I looked at the messages Theroadislong left on your talkpage, and I see nothing that would be likely to be criticised, let alone sanctioned. Their notes to you about reliable sources were civil and accurate - neither IMDB, nor any language version of Wikipedia, is considered RS - as is made explicitly clear in our guidelines, which they gave you links to. All Theroadislong has done is give you pointers on how to improve your editing - this complaint seems to be without merit, and taking it to ANI would likely be futile. GirthSummit (blether) 23:32, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Since their request sounded more like "I'm not really interested in talking more about this" rather than "do not write to me again" I would probably not have picked upon it myself. But Toreeva, I think your request has been made clear now. Getting criticism on Wikipedia can sometimes feel way harsher than the sender ever intended, but we do often need to be receptive to constructive criticism. – Thjarkur (talk) 23:46, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Than you are NOT Help desk. You have to learn how to "hear" another person. I wrote the article and asked Help desk to help with editing, because English is my second lang. Instead Theroadislong and 2 other editors started cut the article from 7 p to 1 p, and than submitted for "deletion". How come not qualified editor who does not know Russian lang, Russian art of that time I described (1970-80th), so any citation was named as not reliable sources, can recommend for deletion? It is easier to delete than to show that the editor is not qualified for the editing of this article. Official docs and webs in Russian database - not reliable? Something wrong is behind of this rejection and without good faith. I submitted complain to DRN and the same editor Theroadislong deleted this input, and Talk page where you can see our dispute. Stop tell lies at least to yourself. I don't see the answer for my question, that's why I don't want to continue the discussion. I don't see the respect and see only waste of time. I am out of it. Thank you for your time.Toreeva (talk) 03:27, 22 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Please stop. You are being disrespectful to volunteers who are trying to help you. The DRN case is at Wikipedia:Dispute resolution noticeboard/Archive 182#Natalia Toreeva, where you attacked the DRN volunteer ("How "low" you can go? Not me. Where is the purpose in your life, God has given you? Where is your integrity? You reached your destination. Have a peace in your decision") Stop attacking other editors. Stop now. If you don't stop it is very likely that you will be blocked from editing Wikipedia. --Guy Macon (talk) 04:13, 22 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
If it helps I am perfectly happy to stop editing Toreeva's talk page, but I suspect that what she actually wants is for me to stop editing any article that involves her too, such as her unsourced self promotion at Soviet Nonconformist Art. Making edits

Good afternoon, I recently attempted to update Wiki's page with research that has been done in the City of Newberry to correct the history about the Newberry Six. I serve as the Mayor in Newberry, and we recently erected an historical marker to memorialize the Newberry Six. My edits were rejected. Can you help me understand why? And, can you help me correct the errors and insensitivities that currently exist on the page?

Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by 150.104.190.122 (talkcontribs)

Please read WP:COI. Alongside that, I strongly encourage you to make an account if you wish to make edits like this. --MoonyTheDwarf (Braden N.) (talk) 20:59, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
A few of your edits appear good. I'll try and work them into the page for you. MoonyTheDwarf (Braden N.) (talk) 21:01, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The diff shows the specific reason. You would better to find reliable sources for the novel claims that you made. Ruslik_Zero 21:05, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
For information, this is about Newberry, Florida, US. Martin of Sheffield (talk) 21:26, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
As you say, you have done the research. But Wikipedia does not publish original research: see WP:OR. We only accept information that has already been published in a reliable source: see WP:RS. If your research found facts that have already been published in such sources, then please provide those sources so we can incorporate those facts. You are in an unusual situation, because your local newspaper may be interested enough in your research to publish it, and that may suffice. I do not usually recommend this course of action, but it will probably work here. -Arch dude (talk) 02:42, 22 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Photo on the Wikipedia for Manuel Pérez Treviño is not correct.

The image that is currently being used for Manuel Perez Trevino, the Mexican General, is incorrect. I am his great grand daughter and have multiple documents with proof that the image is a false representation. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Marianapt3 (talkcontribs) 21:25, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

If the image is not of him, you can remove it and leave a message on the article's talk page. – Thjarkur (talk) 22:05, 21 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I did a Google image search, and it does look like this is not him. There's a resemblance, but it just doesn't look like the same person as in the other results. I'm therefore going to remove the image to the talk page for further discussion. Beeblebrox (talk) 00:11, 22 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

How to differentiate between two sources

Are Forbes and Forbes Media two different websites? I have seen reliable sources noticeboard of wikipedia. There I found the name of website "Forbes" but I couldn't find the name "Forbes Media" there. I am totally confused whether to trust "Forbes" or "Forbes Media" to extract the information. Could anyone help?
