    Administrators' newsletter – January 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (December 2019).

    Guideline and policy news

    Arbitration

    • The fourth case on Palestine-Israel articles was closed. The case consolidated all previous remedies under one heading, which should make them easier to understand, apply, and enforce. In particular, the distinction between "primary articles" and "related content" has been clarified, with the former being the entire set of articles whose topic relates to the Arab-Israeli conflict, broadly interpreted rather than reasonably construed.
    • Following the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections, the following editors have been appointed to the Arbitration Committee: Beeblebrox, Bradv, Casliber, David Fuchs, DGG, KrakatoaKatie, Maxim, Newyorkbrad, SoWhy, Worm That Turned, Xeno.

    Admiration

I admire and appreciate the exceptional patience you have shown in dealing with Pmoore2222, first here and here, and most recently here and here. Please excuse me for saying so, but it's been my observation that many admins seemingly take pride in being autocratic. You are a refreshing departure from the norm. NedFausa (talk) 17:42, 5 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    • Maybe it's because I'm not an administrator ;) Just a joke, as I don't mean to besmirch the reputation of any administrator. Thanks for the praise :) Mr. Moore has a BLP on this project, and as such we have a duty to ensure it is verifiably accurate to the best of our ability. Given that this fellow asserts he is Mr. Moore, we also have a duty to respect him at least while he's shown himself to not be unworthy of such respect. He's trying to fix problems he sees in his own biography. He's not an experienced Wikipedian. We can't reasonably expect him to learn how to be an experienced editor here before he can try to make corrections. I'm just trying to guide him in how to do it appropriately. He's responding well, which is great. Congrats, by the way, on being the first human to post on my talk page this year :) --Hammersoft (talk) 17:48, 5 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Email

Just a quick note to say I did get your email and read it; I just couldn't think of anything suitable to say in response, other thank you for sending it. Ritchie333 (talk) (cont) 12:10, 14 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Draft:List of songs recorded by Van Halen

Hi, thank you for your comment! :)

This page will be different from Van Halen’s discography since it’s only going to be a list of songs instead of albums, EPs, compilations, live albums and singles. I figured it would best to make a separate list for all their songs because it would be hard to fit a list of at least 130 + songs in their discography.

    :)

    • There's no limit on the size of articles. I'd consider enhancing the discography article rather than writing an entirely new article. --Hammersoft (talk) 04:34, 23 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you Hammersoft!!! I’ll try to add the list to their discography instead of making but if someone removes it I’ll continue with the article. Thank you for helping me out, it’s hard to find people who are nice to noobs :) Category adder (talk) 04:38, 23 January 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Administrators' newsletter – February 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (January 2020).

    Guideline and policy news

    • Following a request for comment, partial blocks are now enabled on the English Wikipedia. This functionality allows administrators to block users from editing specific pages or namespaces rather than the entire site. A draft policy is being workshopped at Wikipedia:Partial blocks.
    • The request for comment seeking the community's sentiment for a binding desysop procedure closed with wide-spread support for an alternative desysoping procedure based on community input. No proposed process received consensus.

    Technical news

    • Twinkle now supports partial blocking. There is a small checkbox that toggles the "partial" status for both blocks and templating. There is currently one template: {{uw-pblock}}.
    • When trying to move a page, if the target title already exists then a warning message is shown. The warning message will now include a link to the target title. [1]

    Arbitration

    • Following a recent arbitration case, the Arbitration Committee reminded administrators that checkuser and oversight blocks must not be reversed or modified without prior consultation with the checkuser or oversighter who placed the block, the respective functionary team, or the Arbitration Committee.

    • And thank you again. I really was and am touched. I still believe there are serious systemic issues with the way ArbCom is run. --Hammersoft (talk) 14:01, 22 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Well, how could I not agree. I was branded "battleground" in 2013, and some still believe that. Look. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 14:18, 22 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It's difficult to shake such things. :( There should be some method of erasing past blocks, if found in error, and erasing past decisions, if found in error. The former is technical though some would protest. The latter...this community doesn't like to forget. --Hammersoft (talk) 14:47, 22 February 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I missed your reply all these months, DYK? I haven't been blocked, they just found me in battle. For fresh air, sure. I'll probably bother you often, new admin ;) - Thank you for offering help. --Gerda Arendt (talk) 20:28, 15 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Administrators' newsletter – March 2020

News and updates for administrators from the past month (February 2020).

    Guideline and policy news

    • Following an RfC, the blocking policy was changed to state that sysops must not undo or alter CheckUser or Oversight blocks, rather than should not.
    • A request for comment confirmed that sandboxes of established but inactive editors may not be blanked due solely to inactivity.

    Technical news

    • Following a discussion, Twinkle's default CSD behavior will soon change, most likely this week. After the change, Twinkle will default to "tagging mode" if there is no CSD tag present, and default to "deletion mode" if there is a CSD tag present. You will be able to always default to "deletion mode" (the current behavior) using your Twinkle preferences.

    Consensus

    Hello,

It seems I've been editing against consensus by using a placeholder image in a number of articles. I wasn't aware of it to be honest and I find it really, really, but really hard to know sometimes what and where are consensus.

Just to let you know it wasn't at any point intentionnal. As you wrote it on your page "Consensus doesn't mean you agree. Sometimes the consensus feels very wrong. That's ok. Disagreement, however, is not a permission slip to edit against consensus.", I completely disagree with this consensus, but that doesn't mean I won't apply it in the future. ;)

    Best regards, CocoricoPolynesien (talk) 20:48, 16 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    • @CocoricoPolynesien: You're awesome, and you didn't do anything wrong :) There's a whole lot of unwritten and pseudo-written rules on the project that aren't codified in policy or guideline. Some other language projects use the placeholders, some don't. We haven't since WP:IPH become consensus. Before then, there were 10s of thousands of uses of placeholder images. Almost all of them have been removed. It's true; sometimes there are things we just can't wrap our heads around, but are in fact consensus. I see it from time to time too. It's the nature of any large group of people working in concert together. It would be strange indeed if thousands of active editors all agreed 100% on something! --Hammersoft (talk) 00:22, 17 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    Placeholder images

Hey, just wondering where the policy for Placeholder images is written down. Cause your link only links to a 12 year old discussion, which states the intention to create such a policy. If the reasoning for removing all these images is simply based on this discussion, then I am not sure that I can agree with it. Skjoldbro (talk) 08:39, 17 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Skjoldbro: The age of the discussion doesn't really have any bearing on whether it's valid or not. It's the last time a centralized discussion was had regarding this issue, so it holds...at least for now. Consensus can change of course, and I'm certainly open to it changing. It's just that it hasn't. If you want to start an WP:RFC about the issue, by all means do so. No objection to a new RfC from me. I do find the placeholder images to be very much less than professional, but that doesn't mean I wouldn't support a new RfC being run. There were two WP:AN/I discussions regarding the IPH issue. Both are admittedly old, but both did uphold IPH application. Those discussions are here and here. It's important to note here that not everything is codified in policy. There are many consensus decisions that apply on this project, and many (if not most) are not codified in policy. If you do start a new RfC, please let me know. Thanks, --Hammersoft (talk) 12:11, 17 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The age could affect whether it is still valid, and since there were no prior objections to yours; it could be argued that there has been a change in consensus, per Consensus Through editing. Skjoldbro (talk) 12:50, 17 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Age doesn't affect whether a consensus is valid or not. There's no guideline or policy that says consensus ages out, and becomes invalid after a certain amount of time. If we want to apply consensus through editing, then the fact that, almost project wide, placeholder images are no longer used that should be a strong indication this is how we do things. We seem to disagree. Given that it's likely you'll continue adding placeholder images, and likely that I'll continue removing them, a new RfC seems warranted. --Hammersoft (talk) 15:24, 17 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Bad wording on my part, all I meant, is things change over time, as could this “consensus”. Well, I have seen just as many pages that use some kind of placeholder, as those who don’t, so I wouldn’t find that indicative of anything. Also, just because others do it doesn’t mean all pages have to do it, per WP:OSE. All it’s seems like is that your are removing things with an established consensus, just because you don’t like it. Skjoldbro (talk) 16:04, 17 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • I don't like placeholders. That doesn't mean I have a burning passion to remove them :) Seriously, while I do them, I'm far from the only one who has done them. There were north of 50,000 uses of them project wide. It's quite possible the number was in excess of 100,000. I found just one in use more than 38,000 times. A lot of people worked to remove them from the project. I'm just a drop in the bucket. As to removing with consensus, I should hope so. I wouldn't do it against consensus :) --Hammersoft (talk) 16:21, 17 March 2020 (UTC)[reply]

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated files}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the file's talk page.

Please consider addressing the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated files}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. Your reverting me made me go back and look again, which is when I saw the original citation. So, I reworded the "he enslaved people" to "slaveholder" which is what the source says. --Hammersoft (talk) 22:46, 15 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Articles for Creation: List of reviewers by subject notice

Hi Hammersoft, you are receiving this notice because you are listed as an active Articles for Creation reviewer.

Recently a list of reviewers by area of expertise was created. This notice is being sent out to alert you to the existence of that list, and to encourage you to add your name to it. If you or other reviewers come across articles in the queue where an acceptance/decline hinges on specialist knowledge, this list should serve to facilitate contact with a fellow reviewer.

To end on a positive note, the backlog has dropped below 1,500, so thanks for all of the hard work some of you have been putting into the AfC process!

Sent to all Articles for Creation reviewers as a one-time notice. To opt-out of all massmessage mailings, you may add Category:Wikipedians who opt out of message delivery to your user talk page. Regards, Sam-2727 (talk)

Request on 17:29:36, 12 July 2020 for assistance on AfC submission by Zabmon

Hi If I understand correctly, my entry was flagged for not citing reliable sources. The source cited is a pdf archive copy of the National Salvation Party Congress, AGM Report. Is there something wrong with it? How may you suggest I review the submission? The info I've provided of the individual is very basic but is important because the wiki page of the national salvation party previously listed Necmettin Erbakan as founding chairman, whereas he only joined in May 1973.

    Zabmon (talk) 17:29, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    • @Zabmon: Hello and welcome to Wikipedia! It's important to understand that Wikipedia does not include everything in the world. Simply because something is true does not mean it gets included in Wikipedia. Part of what guides this in regards to people is Wikipedia:Notability (people). I don't in any sense dispute that this person was who you say he was. I can readily accept it as true. But, that doesn't mean he should have an article on Wikipedia. To achieve that, we're going to need sourcing to reliable, secondary sources that are independent of the subject. What you have provided so far is a primary source. We can use primary sources, within reason, but a biography of a person isn't going to be included here solely based on primary sources. Also, be aware that being a part of...even a founding member of...a notable organization does not make that person notable too. Does that make it more clear? If not, let me know. I'm happy to help. --Hammersoft (talk) 17:42, 12 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    • @AlexKTsirikos: I would have been happy to give you time, but reverting someone without providing a source when you were warned about adding material such as that without a source is not something that would attract trust. As to your source; that source does not indicate that Blagojevich has switched party affiliations from Democrat to Republican. It just talks about the intentions to speak at a GOP event. Someone speaking at a GOP event doesn't make them a member of the GOP party. Four republicans spoke at the DNC (ref: [2]). That doesn't make them democrats either. Do you have any source that asserts Blagojevich has switched his party affiliation? --Hammersoft (talk) 16:50, 25 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    • Ref 1 is about Gokula Education Foundation than about Dr. Jayaram. Ref 2 doesn't discussing Jayaram, but rather has quotes from him. You should not be using Wikipedia as a reference, as you are doing with ref 3. Ref 3, Jayaram is mentioned in passing; again it's not by itself very useful for establishing notability. Ref 6 is effectively the same as ref 1. Ref 7 Jayaram is mentioned only in the image caption; there's no context in the article regarding him. See WP:CIRCULAR. Businesswire, which is ref 8, is a press release platform. I.e., it's a primary source and should be used sparingly. It cannot be used to sustain notability of the subject. Ref 9 is really about MS Ramaiah University of Applied Sciences, and not about Jayaram. I'm seeing a mild case for notability, but really there needs to be some solid secondary sources that discuss him as the subject of the article, rather than in passing or quoting him. --Hammersoft (talk) 20:56, 17 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • @Skancc: Also, I placed File:Dr.M.R.Jayaram.jpg for deletion on Commons because it appears to have been copied from somewhere on the Internet. However, it appears to effectively be a primary source as something uploaded on the channel of the subject, rather than from a major media source. Please also see WP:YOUTUBE and the reality that most YouTube links are not useful for citations and/or sustaining notability. --Hammersoft (talk) 02:10, 20 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The editor is almost certainly Kate Finlay, the wife and business partner of the sculptor Marco Augusto Dueñas ‎ Both user:Finlaykate and user:Marco Augusto Dueñas Cepas are recent SPAs on that subject. MADC created a usepage [3] to hold his desired version f the sculptor's page and now FK is creating a similar draft. Meters (talk) 22:19, 28 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

An earlier SPA on this article was user:Katefin. Meters (talk) 22:43, 28 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]
    • Ah. Well, that makes considerably more sense. Thanks for the clarification and the heads up on the SPAs. --Hammersoft (talk) 23:45, 28 September 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I apologize for the confusion. I came upon the article on Marco Augusto Dueñas (husband and business partner) and found soooo many errors, I shall proceed to rewrite the article as per terms and conditions for your approval and hopefully, we can delete this old one. I'm finding the platform very confusing to edit. Thank you for your time and patience. (Finlaykate (talk) 11:28, 29 September 2020 (UTC))[reply]

Request on 11:00:04, 23 November 2020 for assistance on AfC submission by Finlaykate

Dear Hammersorft, a couple of months ago we discussed the editing of my husband's article. Unfortunately, I have nobody to help me with this so I have rewritten the article with appropriate references in hope that it can be published and subsequently eliminate the existing one. I have gone to the Tea Room and a colleague of yours has suggested a formal request. Finlaykate (talk) 11:00, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    • @Finlaykate: I've taken the liberty of trimming the draft content you posted here and placed it on User:Finlaykate/sandbox, giving it some basic structure and (disabled) categories. You are of course aware of Marco Augusto Dueñas. While we do sometimes do wholesale replacement of articles, we usually just develop what is already in existence. You can use this sandbox to develop content for the Marco Augusto Dueñas article. Ok, so a few things:
    1. You noted the difficulties in working on this platform. Yes, it certainly can be. I think Wikipedia was far easier for new editors 10+ years ago, as there were not so many things that needed to be followed to develop what was at the time considered to be good content. The learning curve is much, much steeper now. We're here to help though.
    2. One part of the learning curve is how references are crafted. In the content you posted here (now on your sandbox), you had reference one referring to the Diocese of Cordoba. That was inspecific; when we make references that point to online resources, we include a direct link to the resource. I searched the diocese website and found an article (in Spanish) which supported the statement you made, and converted that reference into the style we typically use here. You can see this on the sandbox. I also added a template that automatically converts appropriately formatted refs into a list of references. You can see this in the editing window of your sandbox as the first line in the "References" section. It looks like this: {{reflist}}. You can convert your other references to this style by using the "Cite" feature in the editing window. It's in the menu bar in the window, furthest to the right. Click on it, and a drop down menu appears. On the left, there is an additional drop down called "Templates". Click on that, and click on "cite web" (which is what we use most). If you put the URL of the reference in the URL box and click on the magnifying glass to the right of it, the tool will automatically fill out most of the fields in the box. You don't have to fill out all the fields. It is sufficient to add the access date ("Day Month Year" format), and the first name and last name if it is an attributed article. Then click the "Insert" button on the bottom of that box and you're set. The {{reflist}} tag will automatically list it at the bottom of the page. I didn't convert all the references. I just did the first to show you how it is done.
    3. @331dot: (331dot, pinging you so you are aware of this conversation); 331dot is absolutely correct that you should be making edit requests on Talk:Marco Augusto Dueñas, rather than editing the article directly. I know this may seem strange; you obviously are closely affiliated with the subject and have a wealth of knowledge to impart. The issue is that we are an encyclopedia. We are a tertiary source of information and depend upon published, reliable, secondary sources to support the validity of the encyclopedia. Without such a stance, anyone could say anything by way of saying they know the subject personally. I of course do not in any sense doubt you are who you say you are, but if we allowed everyone to do this the encyclopedia would rapidly be overwhelmed with information that we would have absolutely no way of verifying.
    4. You can help us immensely by finding articles written about your husband that we can then reference to support statements in the article about him. As the English language Wikipedia, we face obstacles in finding such sources since your husband is Spanish and much of what is likely written about him is either in Spanish or in Italian. I speak neither language, so while I can find some sources you are far better equipped (assuming you speak Spanish and/or Italian) to find secondary sources to support material in the article. Feel free to add such links to at Talk:Marco Augusto Dueñas and we can use them in the article.
    5. I will make some improvements to the Marco Augusto Dueñas article. We have standards for inclusion of creative professionals in the encyclopedia. These are outlined at WP:ARTIST. The 4th point there, about having been part of significant/permanent collections, I think is the relevant one here. To have his work at the Vatican is a shining achievement, clearly sets him on the world stage and in my opinion eligible for an article here. I will work on improving the article to prove this with secondary sources and thus remove the {{notability}} tag that is currently on the article.
    • Please feel free to communicate with me in the future. I'm happy to help. Thanks, --Hammersoft (talk) 16:38, 23 November 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Hammersoft. Any ideas as to what to do about User talk:223.176.115.46? It appears to be a misplaced attempt at creating Draft:Rakesh Bariha by the same editor who also created User talk:Rakeshbariha6/sandbox. Manith Jupiter

Hi Hammersoft. I need some advice regarding Manith Jupiter and its creator/primary contributor Norasky53. The article seems to have been moved back to the mainspace by this relatively new editor after it was draftified (there have also been other articles draftified). I'm not sure whether the subject meets WP:BIO or WP:MUSICBIO, but I'm assuming that this might be a case of WP:NEXIST and that their might some sigcov in non-English sources. There have also been image copyright issues, but these have been dealt with. The main issue (at least to me) is that the creator seems to be well-meaning, but English is probably not their first language. They might also have a COI or they could just be a really enthusiatic fan, but it's their English ability (or lack thereof) that seems to be the main issue and their user talk page is starting to fill up with warning messages. I thought about adding a Category:Non-English welcome messages to their user talk page, but I can't find one for Khmer. I did find {{Contrib-km1}}, but that's not really applicable. I don't really want to scare them off since everyone makes English errors and those are things that usually can be sorted out. So, I thought that perhaps either you or one of your talk page watchers can help figure out how a good way to try and help this editor out before they edit themselves into some kind of block. FWIW, I've also asked about this on some WikiProject talk pages, but have yet to get a response. -- Marchjuly (talk) 06:17, 23 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

    • I'd dig around to tried to find non-English sources. Toss them at Google Translate if need be. I'm not entirely sure the person is notable, and it's possible we're looking at an autobiography even. I'd try to engage them in conversation. This edit summary is a chicken-and-egg sort of scenario. If there aren't sources to support because the country doesn't have as many outlets, it doesn't mean they get a free pass to inclusion of their article. Understandably, that biases the project towards subjects in countries where sigcov is more likely. But, it still doesn't give a free pass. Either sigcov exists or it doesn't. --Hammersoft (talk) 16:05, 23 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
      • I appreciate the advice. I'm trying to engage this editor on the article talk page and their user talk page, but the warnings continue to pile up. They've also implied a couple of times that people disagreeing with them are "communists" which is a bit weird and might be a cultural/language thing. I think the same editor is also uploading files to Commons under a different username because the "communist" expression has been used there as well. So, far the only response I've gotten from them was "OK", but then they went back a did pretty much the same thing as before. Perhaps things will be resolved once the communication issues have been sorted. -- Marchjuly (talk) 01:31, 24 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
