    Reliable Source

Hi, I am trying to complete my wiki page. I have cited reliable sources from everywhere I could find but am still getting an error message. If you look at my cites they are very much super legit. Let me know what can be done to solve these issue ..... I have more that 10 sources.

page(s) im finalizing Charles M Robinson Director, Charles Mariano Robinson (Director) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Charliebrownatl (talkcontribs) 07:52, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

One of those pages must be deleted because WP never allows two articles about the same subject to exist. BTW the "Director" part of the title is not necessary because there is no article about another person with exactly the same name. I have therefor moved the one that is more complete to Charles Mariano Robinson and the other one has already been deleted. Please continue working on the Charles Mariano Robinson page and do not try to create any more new pages about Robinson. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 09:10, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I see thatDodger67 has fixed the reference error problem. But I see huge problems with the article Charles Mariano Robinson, for example:
    • The article does not establish that he is notable in Wikipedia's special sense: that he has been written about at length in published reliable sources.
    • The article doesn't start off by saying who or what he is
    • A Wikipedia article should never use evaluative language like "very talented" unless that evaluation comes directly from a reliable source, which it references.
    • None of the information about him as a person is referenced, which contravenes our policy on biography of living persons
    • I haven't looked at all the references, but I haven't yet found one which is reliable, substantial and actually supports anything about Robinson. Wikipedia itself, and imdb, are not regarded as reliable, because anybody may edit them; Nashville Scene might be reliable, but the bit you've cited doesn't even mention Robinson; several of the references seem to be to primary sources.
There are other items, such as the fact that your references are bare URLs rather than properly formatted; but the first things you need to do are
    1. find and cite places where people unconnected with Robinson or his bands have written substantial articles about him and published them in reliable places such as major newpapers or magazines; if you don't do this, the article will probably be deleted.
    2. remove all promotional language, such as "talented" and "excel": Wikipedia articles have to be written in a neutral tone.
    3. find citations from reliable sources for all biographical information in the article.
I am sorry if this sounds a lot, but the fact is that writing Wikipedia articles from scratch is hard. --ColinFine (talk) 09:29, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Going back one page when there is no "back" arrow

Hi - The problem that I have is that when I am using Wikipedia in my I Phone latest version of iOS), sometimes I accidentally tap on an illustration, causing that llustration's actual page to come up I.e. I lose my original article.. There is never a "back" button or arrow, so I have to close Wikipedia open it again and then research for my article! Is there an easier way of going back? I don't seem to remember that this happened in previous versions of iOS. If toy can help me I would be grateful. Light second

There is an error in the Table on Wikipedia page for "light-second". The exponent for light year should -6, not -9, as there are 31 million seconds in a year, not 31 billion! But I don't seem to be able to edit within the Table. Could you please make this correction. Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lcstrauss (talkcontribs) 13:12, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You are right there are 31 million seconds in a year but the article doesn't claim othwerwise. -9 is correct. 31×10−9 does not mean 31 billion. It means 31 times a billionth. See scientific notation. 1 / (60*60*24*365.25 second/year) = 31.688×10−9 year/second. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:18, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

is this book sufficiently notable for its own article?

The article: The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine. The notability criteria: WP:BKCRIT
The article might be a commercial promotion. In my opinion it does not stand for any of the criteria, except (may be) the first one: "The book has been the subject[1] of multiple, non-trivial[2] published works appearing in sources that are independent of the book itself.[3] This includes published works in all forms, such as newspaper articles, other books, television documentaries and reviews. Some of these works should contain sufficient critical commentary to allow the article to grow past a simple plot summary. This excludes media re-prints of press releases, flap copy, or other publications where the author, its publisher, agent, or other self-interested parties advertise or speak about the book"

The Critics section specify 4 independent critics only (i.e. other than those quoted on the book cover) whose reviews are really bad.

is this book sufficiently notable for its own article?

Is there a more suitable noticeboard for this kind of questions?

BTW The creator has stopped contributing on 2010. Ykantor (talk) 17:50, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It is, having looked over it now, unapologetically promotional in many areas. I concur that it also seems to meet few of the notability criteria, and I would have no problem flagging it for deletion as promotional text. The fact that content from the article is now used by companies such as Barnes and Noble to advertise the book seems enough of a marker that it's not much more than promotion.  drewmunn  talk  17:58, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I was going to list it at AfD, but the book clearly meets WP:GNG due to the numerous independent sources referring to the book. The synopsis in the Wikipedia article is excessively long. Although Wikipedia:WikiProject Books/Non-fiction article does not list a length, footnote 3 at Wikipedia:How to write a plot summary indicates that 500 or so words should be fine. I'm fine if someone want's to cut out the synopsis subsection to let it then be developed over time. -- Jreferee (talk) 02:56, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    ISSN error

Check the New Country reference in Doug Stone. Roland, Tom (March 1994). "Album reviews: More Love". New Country 1 (1): 48–49. ISSN 1074-536x. For some reason, this is reporting as an ISSN error in the template, but clicking the Worldcat link shows it to be the right ISSN. Is there any way to make it stop returning a false error? Ten Pound Hammer(What did I screw up now?) 21:14, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed by changing x to X.[1]. ISSN requires upper case X but Worldcat and probably many others are forgiving of a lower case x. https://www.worldcat.org/issn/1074-536x displays the correct upper case. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:21, 1 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

From a book written by Bernstein's brother Burton called

There does seem to be disagreement among the sources as to whether she was Chilean or Costa Rican. Felicia Montealegre has a link to what purports to be a record of her birth in Costa Rica, but as you say, the third reference in that same article says that her mother was Costa Rican but she was born in Chile. I favour the birth record (though I'm not sure how reliable familysearch.org is regarded as). But if a fact is inconsistent in different reliable-seeming sources, the article should say so (and should not attempt to resolve the issue or draw a conclusion). If you look at Talk:Felicia Montealegre, there is already discussion of the question, but no resolution. --ColinFine (talk) 08:48, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Every article on Wikipedia has (or can have - it may not always have been created yet) its own Talk page, which you can get to by picking the 'Talk' tab at the top of the page. Is that what you are asking about? --ColinFine (talk) 08:49, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
There is a really serious problem - the default skin uses the label "Discussion" for the Talk tab - not "Talk". This is really confusing to newbies who by definition will be using the default Vector skin. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 09:21, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Are you sure? It says "Talk" for me, I logged out to test, still "Talk". Яehevkor 11:28, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
British English (en-GB) uses "Discussion" while default English (en) uses "Talk". It should be consistent imo. --Glaisher [talk] 11:37, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I totally agree. Joining Wikipedia can be confusing enough without disparity between references where it is not totally necessary. The User Talk link in the top right remains "Talk" in en-GB, and to link you still have to use talk (User discussion:Sonicdrewdriver doesn't work, for instance, even when I am in en-GB).  drewmunn  talk  12:12, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So where do we go to request that the tab label be corrected to be consistent with the other versions? Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 15:20, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You have a conflict of interest and would do well not to edit the article itself. Your best option would be to post to the BLP noticeboard to request immediate correction. You can also post to the article talk page. Robert McClenon (talk) 17:12, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
In looking at the article, it isn't obvious what you are saying is inaccurate or libelous. The fact that many scholars disagree with you is a fact, and the article states that many scholars disagree with you. Your best resource would be to post to the talk page, and specifically identify what you think are the errors, without engaging in original research or insisting that you are more right than your academic critics. You have proposed "taking down" the article. Wikipedia doesn't "take down" an article because an editor with a COI doesn't like it. (Such requests are common and misguided.) The article has survived a request to delete it on grounds of lack of notability. Also, watch for the incoming boomerang. Robert McClenon (talk) 17:18, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I don't think linking the boomerang essay is especially helpful here. Politely informing the OP, for his future reference, of the existence of Wikipedia:No legal threats (a policy, not an essay) would be better. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 17:41, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The OP didn't make legal threats. The OP did state that the article was inaccurate and libelous, but that isn't in itself a legal threat. Robert McClenon (talk) 18:01, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I didn't suggest that anyone made legal threats. I did suggest that your linking of that essay was not especially helpful. --Demiurge1000 (talk) 05:38, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Sourcing "one of the noisiest anti-vaccinationists" to what looks like an op-ed isn't ideal (I can't access it at the moment but the url contains 'op-ed'). I'll add a note to BLPN to get the experts to take a look. SmartSE (talk) 22:40, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Wikipedia nolonger works in IE8?

Wikipedia doesn't work in Internet Explorer 8 (XP not tested in 7 yet). It just loads a blank page. Doesn't work for me in Windows 7. The best I can describe is that links aren't clickable and the content "smears" on scroll. How to propose for deletion

    Hi there,

Long time user/first time editor. I want to propose a page with no references for deletion discussion that had already been proposed for deletion and invalidated a few years ago. I read about it and tagged the page but it was removed because it had been tagged a long time ago. I then read more and put it on a page of proposed deleted pages but a big box went around it saying it had already been invalidated a few years ago and then it disappeared. Is there anyway to reopen deletion discussion on a page or am I completely wrong in wanting to do that? From the rules I have read on wikipedia page creation is seems justified but when I open the discussion its being closed immediately. Just want to know if I'm doing it wrong or if I'm just in the wrong by proposing it in which case I'll let it be?

Abundance (programming language) — Preceding unsigned comment added by PeteBaltar (talkcontribs) 17:52, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! There are a few different ways to propose that an article be deleted. The first, as you tried, is via Proposed deletion; unfortunately, as you found, this can only be done once per article. To suggest that the article should be deleted a second time you'll need to open a suggestion over at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion. Instructions on how to do this can be found on that page here. Hope this helps :) Samwalton9 (talk) 17:56, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, that's what I meant when I said I read more and then posted it and a big box went around it saying it had already been proposed. Right after I did, someone deleted the entry without discussion. It was Wikipedia:Articles for deletion under November 2nd, should I try again? Thanks! PeteBaltar (talk) 17:58, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I see that you actually proposed it for speedy deletion which is different to Articles for Deletion. Please nominate it through the AfD process I linked above. Samwalton9 (talk) 18:04, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nevermind, I didn't see the link you sent with the step by step run down, thanks a lot! I will try this out and learn from it, thanks again! — Preceding unsigned comment added by PeteBaltar (talkcontribs) 18:05, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The article has already been proposed for deletion three times, and twice was closed as Keep. (The second nomination for deletion was withdrawn.) It can be nominated for deletion a fourth time, but it is likely again that it will either be closed as Keep (which keeps it) or closed as No Consensus (which does nothing, and so keeps it). Why are copyvio rules far stricter on en-wikipedia than on fi-wikipedia?

Hello, after 5 years and 15,000 edits on the Finnish Wikipedia, I have recently started to contribute to the en-wikipedia in exactly the same manner I edit the fi-wp. I write brief biographies in chronological order and try to rephrase everything I can so I wouldn't violate the source's copyright. On fi-wiki, I have never encountered problems with this. However, today two of my half a dozen bios have been speedily deleted from en-wiki, one (Marjut Rimminen) without even giving me any warning, the other one (Nazanin Aghakhan) without commenting on my explanation. All the rest of my biographical entries have been questioned for notability because of too few sources, although I have seen many more articles on people with no references whatsoever on en-wiki than on fi-wiki. I feel very confused and frustrated by this extremely unwelcoming atmosphere and a totally different editing culture. What can I do? –Kotivalo (talk) 18:38, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Rimminen was deleted with the comment: "G12: Unambiguous copyright infringement: close paraphrasing of http://www.marjutrimminen.com/about". there has never been a Nazanin Aghakhna article on English Wikipedia. Rmhermen (talk) 18:53, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Looks like Nazanin Aghakhani is the article. Discussion is ongoing at the user's talk page. Rmhermen (talk) 18:57, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
On another note, it is not uncommon for some rules to differ between wikpiedias. Fair use is certainly applied differently on English Wikipedia and does not even exist on some other language versions. Rmhermen (talk) 18:59, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for nothing. –Kotivalo (talk) 19:01, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Maybe it's a language thing but this comment is extremely rude. If you are finding an unwelcoming atmosphere comments like this could well be why. Яehevkor 19:34, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
One possible reason for stricter copyvio rules on en-wikipedia than fi-wikipedia might be stricter copyright laws. While copyright laws in most industrial nations implement an international copyright convention, the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, to which the en-wikipedia is subject, is harsh, and we do our best to comply with it so that we don't run the risk of getting takedown notices, which are extremely disruptive. (It is true that the Finnish Wikipedia is technically subject to the DMCA, because it is hosted on servers on US soil, but Finnish copyright holders may not even know of the DMCA.) Robert McClenon (talk) 19:37, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I just came here to ask a question myself but I deleted the article and replied to Kotivalo on my talk page earlier. Feel free to deliver a fishy treat my way ;) SmartSE (talk) 22:29, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Kotivalo - The Marjut Rimminen article you posted is taken from Marjut Rimminen himself via MarjutRimminen.com and taken from zoominfo.com. English Wikipedia uses coverage in reliable sources that are independent of the subject. Does the Finnish Wikipedia allow the subjects of their articles to write their Finnish Wikipedia articles? Is zoominfo.com a reliable source for the Finnish Wikipedia? As for what you can do when writing biographies, gather all your source material first, making sure the sources are reliable source and independent of the topic. Then, summarize the sources chronologically when writing the biography and add a footnote to the end of each sentence. -- Jreferee (talk) 05:27, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for some more informative comments. I apologise my frustrated rudeness above. Jreferee: there has never been any discussion about Zoominfo or its unreliability on Finnish Wikipedia, nor does the Zoominfo article here give any hint that it should be avoided. The fi-wp allows people to write their own articles since, just like on en-wp (?), editors identities cannot be checked. However, I'm not any of the persons I wrote about. – I find your copyvio policy extremely limiting if one is trying to write a concise, chronological bio. No matter who writes it, the same proper nouns, such as names of people, companies, schools, orchestras etc., inevitably appear in more or less the same order. Your Duplicate Detector seemed to react mostly to such proper nouns in my contributions. Come on, how do you paraphrase a name or some of the most common prepositional expressions in the English language (worked at, studied with, etc.) –Kotivalo (talk) 12:06, 3 November 2013 (UTC)?[reply]
A list of facts, in a natural order, such as chronological, is not subject to copyright (although the exact wording will be). In such a case, a sources article should not be deleted as a copyvio. the en Wikipedia gets a lot of stuff dumped in as 'articles' that is copied straight from websites -- see an example in the #Edit new page section below. We have had to be rather strict to deal with all of this. DES (talk) 13:55, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I was not familiar with the Duplicate Detector until I looked at these examples. However, the OP does appear to have a valid point that the Duplicate Detector is reporting that proper names are duplicates between a source and an article. That is at best a "misfeature" that illustrates the dangers of trying to detect copyright violation robotically. Can someone provide me a link to a description of the Duplicate Detector? I think that it may be a problem. Robert McClenon (talk) 15:39, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Archiving and time stamping

I have been setting up auto archiving on a number of talk pages. When I do I add a time stamp or a signed comment to sections that do not have time stamps. This does create a false time sequencing of the sections when archived so it may not be the best way. Is there a standard way to do this? - - MrBill3 (talk) 23:12, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

If the bot takes the timestamp of messages from the Talk page's history, then you don't have to add anything. But if it takes the timestamp from the message text on the Talk page, you could simply edit that to read any date you see fit. Problem is: I don't know which timestamp the bot reads and I haven't been able find out either. Yintan  23:35, 2 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The archiving bots look at the text not at the page history. If you are concerned about the sequence of the sections on the archive page, though, you will have to slot them in manually, since the bots always archive to the bottom of an archive page. -- John of Reading (talk) 08:49, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. I will try to add time stamps that are as close to the date of the conversation as possible. Do you know when unsigned comments started being autosigned with a time stamp? I can use that as a base date, anything without a time stamp will be before that. I appreciate your time and assistance. - - MrBill3 (talk) 03:48, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, I recently walked the entire length of the Canning Stock Route in the oppisite direction to Gaynor Schoeman. We in fact passed each other stopping for a cuppa and a chat. I did have a support vehicle but still completed the entire distance on foot, doing it in 49days from the 5th May to the 9th July. I would like to have that information acknowledged on the pages referring to people who have traversed the length by foot of bike etc. I'm currently painting a body of work inspired by the walk for a solo exhibition next year in Melbourne. How can I go about putting details of my walk on the relevent page?? Please help... Kind regards Pam Armstrong (Artist/teacher) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 101.168.255.247 (talk) 00:06, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I found this and this about it so will add something to the article. That's quite a journey! SmartSE (talk) 00:13, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
According to The West Australian it took you 64 days rather than 49. Information here has be verifiable so I have stated this rather than 49 days. Neither of those articles mentions your upcoming exhibition so that can't be included yet. SmartSE (talk) 00:27, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The OP said it took from 5 May to 9 July, which is about 64 days anyway. Not sure why they said 49. 30 days in June, plus 9 for July plus the remainder of May is definately over 60. RudolfRed (talk) 01:40, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    How many references?

How many references are appropriate for a particular fact in an article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Halla02 (talkcontribs) 03:40, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

depends upon the fact and the strength of the sources. You would need to provide specifics about what fact in what article and what sources. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 03:53, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think Halla02 is referring to this edit and the fact that Zartan has a younger brother and sister, twins named Zandar and Zarana. The question is whether one non-independent source or two non-independent sources are needed to source the profile fact. Fortdj33 has reverted the second reference added by Halla02. -- Jreferee (talk) 05:06, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
To provide an example, something like saying that Rob Ford smoked crack would need a few really solid sources. On the other hand (excuse the pun), saying that Barack Obama is left handed would only need one source. Dismas|(talk) 04:33, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And in this case, for an uncontroversial statement about a fictional character, one reference is ample. Maproom (talk) 08:15, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How can I archive or delete sections of my talk page?

I am having trouble getting rid of the past sections of my talk page. The ones that are months old. If there is anyone who can help me on this, it would be greatly appreciated. :) Keeby101 (talk) 04:35, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I added MiszaBot/config to your talk page. It's set to archive threads that are older than 30 days (|algo = old(30d)), but you can change the "30" to whatever number you want. It should send the first batch to User talk:Keeby101/Archive 1, which is linked on the top of you talk page. -- Jreferee (talk) 04:44, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I saw some questions you posted on your talk page. User names that start with Kirby are here, so you might be able to find your original account. -- Jreferee (talk) 04:56, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 4 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck.Template:Z25 --Glaisher [talk] 11:03, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Edit new page

    Hello,

I prepared a new page concerning the European project Thrombus that I manage! Could you please help me to know how at this stage, I publish this page as a public wikipedia page? Thanks so much. Thanks so much. GC — Preceding unsigned comment added by Courbebaisse (talkcontribs) 13:32, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I presume that you mean this: [2]. Please note that Wikipedia is an encyclopaedia. It covers encyclopaedic subjects that conform to our notability guidelines, as demonstrated by significant coverage in third-party published reliable sources. It is not a platform for the promotion of yet-to-be-carried-out medical research. AndyTheGrump (talk) 13:40, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)There are several issues here. You created this on your user page ( User:Courbebaisse), which is not the proper place for an article draft. I suggest that you read Your First Article and strongly consider using the Articles for Creation process. Besides that, your draft looks very much as though it had been copied form elsewhere. If it has, it is quite possibly a copyright violation, and Wikipedia will be unable to accept it in that form. DES (talk) 13:43, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
In fact it seems to be a direct copy from this page and I have tagged it for speedy deletion. Please do not copy from other web sites to Wikipedia. DES (talk) 13:49, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Request help in opening sandbox due to cite error message.

I wanted to place a reference on my sandbox page to copy and paste in another location, but when I placed the reference on my sandbox page, it gave me an cite error message, and now, I can't even get have access to my sandbox in order to get the reference. How can I get into my sandbox? Please help. Thanks. Daniellagreen (talk) 15:06, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Your sandbox is here at User:Daniellagreen/sandbox. You edit it like you edit any other page. The cite error is because you have a reference but no reference list. You need to add {{reflist}} at the bottom. --Mysdaao talk 15:23, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wikimarkup handles footnoting with two parts. the <ref> </ref> tags in which the footnote content is placed, and the {{reflist}} template which displays the content in the ref tags on the page.
i have added the {{reflist}}. see [3] Your not being able to edit may be an issue with your browser. Try clearing the cache. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 15:28, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Great, thank you both for your help, I appreciate it. There was no browser problem, just that after adding the reference, the cite error came up, and I was unable to do anything in my sandbox. After you added the 'reflist,' I can now edit in it. Yeh - thanks again! Daniellagreen (talk) 19:46, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How do I edit a page about me?

User:Paris1127 sent me a message saying I could not edit a page about me. This is ridiculous and there seems no way to respond to Paris1127???? here is what I want the article to say: Tell me what's wrong with the TRUTH!!!!!!!!!!!!! I didn't start this page, it just appeared, but it is about ME!

Bill Crews (born 12 July 1952[1]), a gay American local politician, served as the mayor of Melbourne, Iowa (population 700), from 1984 through 1998. Crews came out at the LGBT Equality March on Washington, D. C. in 1993, where he attracted national attention as a result of hate graffiti on his Melbourne house.[2] Political career

Crews was an attorney (University of Iowa College of Law JD 1977) working as a representative of the Iowa Governor when after moving to the city, he was approached to serve as mayor - filling a vacancy. At the election held the following year to fill out the term, Crews won all 57 votes cast. He was re-elected in the 1987, 1991, and 1995 elections.[1] During Crews' service as mayor of Melbourne, the city built a new fire station and library, improved water and sewer infrastructure and increased cash reserves.[citation needed] Formerly a moderate Republican, he claimed "I was a Republican from before the fundamentalists took over the Iowa party. I believe in progressive, fiscally responsible government. I am now a registered Democrat. I'm pro-choice; I've always been."[citation needed] Crews ran for the Iowa Senate in 1992 but lost by just 57 votes.[citation needed] After moving to the District of Columbia, Crews served two terms as an elected Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner (SMD 6C07) in the neighborhood of Capitol Hill. Crews also served as the Zoning Administrator for the District of Columbia from 2005 through 2007. Crews was once again elected as an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner in 2010. Personal life

Crews' father, a United Methodist minister who fought for social justice, was killed in a car accident in 1973. Bill Crews was also active in the United Methodist church after coming out, until 1998 when he relocated to Washington, D.C. with his husband. Crews married Steve Kehoe (childhood in Waterloo, Iowa)on September 15, 2008, at San Francisco City Hall. A celebratory luncheon was held at the Top of the Mark, Mark Hopkins Intercontinental Hotel. They are celebrating 35 years together this 2014 New Year and reside on Capitol Hill in Washington, DC. References

What happened to my edit on the 2011 article?

I just realized that one of my edits on the 2011 article, has been deleted.

In addition, I cited the URL, plus the archive URL, including all of the info. Is this plagiarism? I cited the URL, and someone on here deletes it? I haven't been sent a notification about that edit.

I understand that the edit I made would be free to use under a Creative-Commons license, and I would like to know, how come my edit was deleted.

The edit was about Pokemon Black & White being released on March 6, 2011. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Fennekinisfire (talkcontribs) 20:03, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The article you edited was about the major events that happened in 2011 - heads of state being elected, disasters that killed thousands of people, wars. Your edit was revered with the notation "nn"] which i am assuming means "not notable". You can go to the Talk:2011 and make the case that the release of a Pokemon expansion ranks up there in importance with the other entries on the list, but I am pretty sure you are not going to convince anybody. -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 20:12, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)If you are referring to this edit it was undone in this subsequent edit. No reason was provided, you would need to ask User:DerbyCountyinNZ for his or her reasons. It might be that DerbyCountyinNZ did not consider the event significant enough. See Wikipedia:Recent years, where it says:

"Since so many events happen in a year, not all events will be notable enough to merit inclusion on the page. Such events may be better placed on a subpage. That an event is important to an individual editor, or even to a particular society or nation, is insufficient ground for its inclusion. The event must have a demonstrated, international significance"

It would be more suitable for 2011 in video gaming, but it's already there. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:13, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    cite this page

according to the instructions in the "ToolBox" (which doesn't exist)there is a "Cite this Page" (which also doesn't exist)on the left of any wiki page. So, if it isn't in "tools" then were is it? I would like to tell my students that this function exists, but so far I cannot find it. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.92.208.48 (talk) 22:46, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There should be a section called "Tools" tools in the grey bar on the left side of the page. You may need to click there to display the links. From there, you should be able to click "Cite this page," the last item in the list. (Keep in mind that it only appears on articles.) If you can't see that, you can always go to Special:Cite and type in the article's name there. ~HueSatLum 22:56, 3 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Have a picture to add to James Spradley page

Have not been able to figure out how to upload. James Spradley was my brother. Please contact me and I will send you the picture. <email address redacted> — Preceding unsigned comment added by 66.29.187.54 (talk) 00:04, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

From this upload form, you need only use "browse" to locate the image on your computer. Once you find it, press "upload file". You'll need to add the licensing information afterwords, but the image will be in Wikipedia and others then can help you with the licensing and other issues. -- Jreferee (talk) 01:11, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There was an image improperly added to the infobox by an account called something like "Jim's sister" back in March. If that is this person, I have fixed the image to display in the article. - Purplewowies (talk) 04:53, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    Tools always breaking?

I often click links that use wiki-tools (is my wiki-jargon right?), such as Contributors in Revision history of articles, or Edit count in User contributions. However, and this seems to be increasing in frequency, these tools are producing various error messages. I have "heard" that it has something to do with the toolserver, but don’t understand what the toolserver is, and why this it is becoming rampant. Isn’t this a possible cause for the editor attrition we are all hearing about? I would appreciate any feedback on this matter. Thanks in advance, XOttawahitech (talk) 01:38, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

@Ottawahitech: Toolserver is a cluster of servers that run all the Wikipedia Toolserver tools. - copied from WP:TS From time to time, Toolserver malfunctions and as a result it goes down (more frequently these days). And it is going to be shut down at the end of this year to be replaced by Wikimedia Labs. Many of the tools have already been migrated to Labs: toollabs:. See also m:Future of Toolserver. --Glaisher [talk] 09:14, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

    copyright

I have problems with the copyright of pictures I want to upload. I know how to upload the images, but they always get deleted. The images that I want to use belong to the World Taekwondo Federation. So they are copyrighted, but as I work for the WTF I have permission to use the images in my Wikipedia articles. I don't know if that is a case of fair use or what I can do so the images won't get deleted.Nelelemke (talk) 06:49, 4 November 2013 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Nelelemke (talkcontribs) 05:33, 4 November 2013 (UTC) --Nelelemke (talk) 07:01, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Have you read the process for WP:donating copyrighted material? - David Biddulph (talk) 08:50, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It's not possible to use images for which permission has been given solely for use in Wikipedia articles. Wikipedia requires a license that allows free reuse of the images by others thereafter. If you want to use these images, you'll have to get the copyright holder to donate them, per David Biddulph's link above. If they don't want to do this, then you can't use them in Wikipedia articles. Fair use applies in very limited circumstances: if, for example, the subject of the image is dead so a substitute free-use image cannot ever be obtained. - Karenjc (talk) 10:09, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Richie Incognito - Wrongly edited personal info

    Hi,

While reading about Richie Incognito I found that the personal info section was incorrectly edited:

    Personal[edit]

Incognito is (a human shitbag), the oldest son of Richard and Donna Incognito, who also have a younger son, Derek. Incognito’s father, proud about being a Nebraska parent and having Richie attend college at Nebraska, wrote a piece to Huskerboard.com describing the recruiting process.[31] During the 2012 season, Incognito hosted a private screening with Operation Homefront and book reading of the animated film, Rise of the Guardians for Operation Homefront. At the event, Incognito led a book reading to over 100 kids before the screening of the holiday movie. Incognito supports Operation Homefront, which is an organization that provides assistance to families of service members and wounded soldiers.[32]

Can you please address this? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 71.170.160.94 (talk) 06:09, 4 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
