2023 visit by Joe Biden to Ukraine
DateFebruary 20, 2023 (2023-02-20)
LocationKyiv, Ukraine

On February 20, 2023, the president of the United States, Joe Biden, visited Kyiv, the capital of Ukraine—his first visit since the beginning of the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.[1][2][3][4][5]

Background

On February 24, 2022, Russia invaded Ukraine in a major escalation of the Russo-Ukrainian War.[6][7][8] Throughout the war, the United States had been one of the largest supporters of Ukraine, with in excess of US$51 billion in foreign aid since the invasion began.[9]

Visit to Ukraine

During his visit, Biden met with Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, and Olena Zelenska, the first lady of Ukraine.[10] The White House stated the visit to an active warzone was unprecedented as the U.S. does not have military presence in Ukraine, nor a significant diplomatic footprint in Kyiv.[11]

Military aid announcement

Biden announced an additional military aid package for Ukraine, worth US$500 million and including ammunition for HIMARS.[10][12][13]
