Minangkabau International Airport (Indonesian: Bandar Udara Internasional Minangkabau, Minangkabau: Bandar Udaro Internasional Minangkabau) (IATA: PDG, ICAO: WIEE) is the principal airport serving the province of West Sumatra on the island of Sumatra, Indonesia. It is located at Ketaping, Padang Pariaman Regency which is about 23 km north-west of Padang. The airport became operational in July 2005, replacing the old Tabing Airport in Padang. The airport is named after the Minangkabau ethnic group who inhabit the region. There is one terminal building for both international flights and domestic flights. The airport has 17 check-in counters, 5 baggage conveyors, and 9 ticket sales counters. The architecture of airport terminal adopting bagonjong (spired roof), Minangkabau vernacular architecture commonly found in rumah gadang traditional house.
In late 2013, the runway was lengthened to 250 m that is now compatible with Boeing 747 and Airbus A340 planes. There was also a plan to connect the airport to the city of Padang with a train service. The terminal expansion (Phase II) is already announced and the rendering is already released in Angkasa Pura 2 website.
Minangkabau International Airport is located 23 km from the center of the city of Padang, occupying an area of ± 427 hectares as the main gateway to West Sumatra. The airport was built in 2001 replacing Tabing Airport which has been operating for 34 years. The relocation from Tabing Airport to Minangkabau International Airport was done because the old airport could no longer meet the requirements in terms of flight safety. The new airport construction cost approximately 9.4 billion yen, in the form of soft loan from Japan Bank International Corporation (JICB) and the state budget of around Rp 97.6 billion (10% of it). The constructions were carried out by the main contractors Shimizu and Marubeni of Japan JO and Adhi Karya from Indonesia.
There are a number of flights serving the routes from and to Minangkabau International Airport, similar to the former Tabing Airport. These routes help to connect Padang to Jakarta, Medan, Batam and Pekanbaru domestically; whereas international routes connect it to Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia. Currently there are six national airlines and one foreign airlines operating at Minangkabau International Airport. The Airport can accommodate wide-body aircraft like Airbus A330, Boeing 747-400, or Boeing 777 and upon completion of the all the facilities in the future, it would have better facilities for passengers and operators as compared with the former Tabing Airport.
Minangkabau International Airport is the third airport in Indonesia, after Soekarno–Hatta Airport at Cengkareng and Kuala Namu International Airport in Medan to be constructed from scratch. The passenger terminal building is expanded to 36,789 square meters so it can accommodate 3.7 million passengers per year. In phase II will be developed to 49,124 square meters to accommodate 5.9 million passengers per year. The number of check-in counters will increase to a total of 32 counters with 5 conveyor belt baggage luggage. The runway will expand from the current measuring 2,750 x 45 square meters to 3,000 x 45 square meters in order to accommodate the operation of larger aircraft. The number of taxiways will also increase to 8 taxiways so that it will accelerate aircraft traffic on the air side to improve the airline's on time performance and accommodate more flight operations. 
In order to provide an alternative transportation for the public, Minangkabau International Airport will soon be integrated with the railway line with 202.5 m connection building between the airport and railway station. Along with the development of the airport, the local government has completed a flyover at the intersection of the entrance to the airport which links the Airport with the By-pass arterial road. Another planned upgrade includes road widening of a 10 km stretch Tabing – Duku section, being part of Padang – Bukit Tinggi road.
Airlines and destinations
- Lion Air flight from Padang to Jeddah includes a stop-over at Thiruvananthapuram. However, Lion Air does not have rights to transport passengers solely between Padang and Thiruvananthapuram.

The facilities are adequate for a regional provincial airport. There is ample parking space, a range of stores selling various goods (especially provincial products), and check-in arrangements are generally quite efficient. However the departure lounge can get quite crowded at times and indeed crowding seems likely to become more of a problem in view of the rapid growth in passenger numbers taking place at present in Indonesia. Many international tourists would find the toilet facilities somewhat unsatisfactory.
But, right now the facilities have been repaired such as the toilet, the arrival gates, and another facilities in the terminal building area.

Passengers are encouraged to use a taxi with a meter to avoid scams. Taxis from the first arrival until the last arrival will waiting in the taxi parking area. They are usually operates from 7.00/7 AM - 22.30/10.30 PM. Taxi costs normally average at Rp80.000 to Padang city plus Rp20.000 for airport parking tax. In mid 2014, up to 4 companies taxi serves this airport with a meter.
A 3.9 km railway connecting the airport to the nearby Duku Railway Station is under construction with totally 23 kilometer to Padang, but from Duku Railways Station to Padang has existing rail and only need some improvements. In March 2017, all land acquisitions have been done. Construction has started in 2012 and 400 meters rail, airport station and 120 meters skybridge which connecting airport station to waiting room are under construction, predicted to be operated in November 2017. It would be the second integrated airport rail link in Indonesia, after the Kualanamu International Airport in Medan.
Accidents and Incidents
- This airport suffered minor damage because of the late September 2009 earthquake.
- On 2 August 2015 a Citilink Airbus A320-200 overran runway on landing at Minangkabau Airport. No casualty occurred.
