Pictures tonight[edit]

Hi, I don't remember if I met you yet, but my memory is poor on many points. Among the regulars at WMNYC I'm the one who snaps, uploads and inserts the most photos, so I hope to talk to you about that tonight at Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/August 2018 Jim.henderson (talk) 18:55, 29 August 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

I was looking into Commons:Template:PD-UK-unknown, it appears that the copyright situation is much more favorable for your use case than I thought it was!--Pharos (talk) 15:56, 30 August 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Terrific! Some of the photos are therefore in the public domain, because the subject was living in the UK in the 1920s and 30s. thanks! Artatra (talk) 23:11, 30 August 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Success! I have posted a photo to the page (from 1910, in public domain). Any advice on the translation function on Wikipedia? Is there a how-to page, do you know Pharos(talk) ?? Artatra

Translations and pictures[edit]

Most of the top brass of Wikimedia New York City are in Columbus, Ohio for a Wiki Conference this weekend, so response might be slow. Being too tired to be out getting drunk & disorderly at the after-conference parties, I can give a quick answer. @Doctorxgc: is pretty much the best we've got for wp:translation or at least she's the one on my mind because I saw her just a couple hours ago. Read that page about translations, and then you can ask better questions. I'll be one of the last to return to NYC but most of us will be at Wednesday's monthly meetup in Brooklyn, see Wikipedia:Meetup/NYC/October 2018. We will have much to discuss with the big group, but if you can show up early, some of us will be ready to talk more personally. Or stay late.

What pictures did you upload? Remember to sign your talk page discussions with four tildes. Jim.henderson (talk) 22:31, 21 October 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Helen Tracy Lowe-Porter 1910, bigger picture
Oh. Silly me; I have long known how to find uploaded pictures, but I forgot. It was this one, and a smaller one which has already been posted in the biography. I shall categorize them; that's a somewhat complex matter which you should learn if you're going to upload more pictures. I hope we'll see you Wednesday evening. Jim.henderson (talk)
thanks for following-up! I can't make the meeting this Wednesday but would be happy to learn about how to categorize photos at a future meeting.
Coming up soon: I'm co-leading a 75-minute workshop on basic Wikipedia editing at the annual conference of the American Literary Translator Association (weekend of Nov. 1), during which I'll go over Visual editing and ways to improve existing articles by adding citations and links and copy-editing. The skill level of those attending is a big unknown. It's a closed conference with a registration fee; if not I would have invited local Wikipedians in the Indiana University-Bloomington community to join us at the workshop.
We won't focus on translating articles per se at the workshop, but thanks for the recommendation! I will get in contact with Doctorxgc and go one of the Translate-a-thons she runs at LaGuardia Community College to get some hands-on experience and help. I just enabled the Beta translation feature on Wikipedia but didn't get far with an article on a Spanish woman writer I tried to translate from Spanish to English. No worries about that right now, though. Until soon, I hope! Artatra (talk) 01:00, 22 October 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Great to hear from you![edit]

Hello Artatra. We just met yesterday to begin planning the next translatathon. We are aiming for a Thursday evening and a Friday in April but do not have a firm date yet. If you want, we can meet before that for a coffee or something and I can give you the basics of translating and then you can visit for the translatathon or participate remotely. Just let me know what works. --DrX (talk) 21:33, 9 November 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thanks! Yes, let's meet when it's convenient, no rush, even over the semester break. I'd like to learn to translate existing articles into English, just as a starting point, to add to or enhance. I'm focusing my Wikipedia efforts on expanding the number of articles on international women writers and women translators.
I've followed steps on "How to translate" without success on this page https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Translation
Would love to see how that works.

Artatra (talk) 23:08, 9 November 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Will do. Let's communicate a bit later in the semester, but take into account BMCC finishes earlier than LAGCC. I checked your profile and one of the things you can work on in the meantime is to edit more on the English WP. Specifically, to use the Translation Tool to translate INTO the English WP you need to have a bit more of a presence: "The Content Translation tool may be used to facilitate the translation process. This tool is currently limited to extended confirmed editors (those with 30 days tenure and at least 500 edits). The community is actively developing a process whereby trusted editors will be able to gain access to this tool. Please see more information at Wikipedia:Content translation tool." Now, you don't have to use the translation tool, but it does make life easier. --DrX (talk) 00:38, 10 November 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Aha, I didn't know about the 500-edit minimum. It may take me a while to get there--slowly but surely. Having that tool would speed things up, but I can also translate the old-fashioned way. I'll check in again soon. (Yes, BMCC has a break for almost the entire month of January.) Artatra (talk) 19:08, 11 November 2018 (UTC)Reply[reply]
Hello Doctorxgc! Just checking in to say hi and I'm still interested in learning more about the translation function on Wikipedia (for my own use and to be used in my classes at BMCC). There was a recent entry on the Wikimedia Foundation blog on the content translation tool, announcing that it has integrated Google Translate.

https://wikimediafoundation.org/2019/01/09/you-can-now-use-google-translate-to-translate-articles-on-wikipedia/

Unfortunately I haven't been editing much lately so my number of edits hasn't increased much--but I will start working on that again! My focus has been on improving the presence of international women writers and women translators on Wikipedia.

If you have any news or reactions to the integration of Google Translate, please let me know, and would still love to meet you (though maybe your classes have started, as mine are next week). Artatra (talk) 17:17, 21 January 2019 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Thursday April 4 and Friday April 5: Translat-a-thon NYC 2019 @ LaGuardia Community College

Translat-a-thon NYC 2019 @ LaGuardia Community College is hosting the second annual Wikipedia Translatathon! At this event on Thursday evening and during the day Friday this week, anyone from the public is invited to LaGuardia to join students, professors, and CUNY faculty in translating Wikipedia articles among any languages which attendees understand. Themes for this event include public health and the history of New York City.

New York City has a large immigrant population and great diversity of speakers of various languages. Among all schools in New York City, LaGuardia has the highest percentage of immigrant students, the highest percentage of students who speak a language other than English as their first language, and the greatest representation of language diversity. It is a strength of LaGuardia that it can present "Wikipedia translatathons", which are Wikipedia translation events.

Is there a project you'd like to share? A question you'd like answered? A Wiki* skill you'd like to learn? Let us know by adding it to the agenda. The Wiknic is taking the place of "WikiWednesday" this month, so we will also include salon and knowledge-sharing workshop aspects.

3:00 pm - 4:00 pm online via YouTube (watch our national panel's livestream, and participate by text chat)
4:00 pm - 5:00 pm online via Zoom (participate by videoconference with NYC community)

We especially encourage folks to share your parks and foods on screen, and add your 3-minute lightning talks to our roster for the Zoom portion, and otherwise join in the "open space" experience! Newcomers are very welcome! Bring your friends and colleagues!

Your submission at Articles for creation: Luisa Carnés has been accepted[edit]

Luisa Carnés, which you submitted to Articles for creation, has been created.

Congratulations, and thank you for helping expand the scope of Wikipedia! We hope you will continue making quality contributions.

The article has been assessed as Stub-Class, which is recorded on its talk page. It is commonplace for new articles to start out as stubs and then attain higher grades as they develop over time. You may like to take a look at the grading scheme to see how you can improve the article.

Since you have made at least 10 edits over more than four days, you can now create articles yourself without posting a request. However, you may continue submitting work to Articles for creation if you prefer.

If you have any questions, you are welcome to ask at the help desk. Once you have made at least 10 edits and had an account for at least four days, you will have the option to create articles yourself without posting a request to Articles for creation.

If you would like to help us improve this process, please consider leaving us some feedback.

Thanks again, and happy editing!

November 2022[edit]

Information icon Hello, I'm CAPTAIN JTK. I noticed that you recently removed content from Sergio Chejfec without adequately explaining why. In the future, it would be helpful to others if you described your changes to Wikipedia with an accurate edit summary. If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored. If you would like to experiment, please use your sandbox. If you think I made a mistake, or if you have any questions, you can leave me a message on my talk page. Thanks. — CAPTAIN JTK (talk) 12:14, 2 November 2022 (UTC)Reply[reply]

Hello! Voting in the 2022 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 (UTC) on Monday, 12 December 2022. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.
