Research about virtual community

Dear Katarighe,

My name is Juliana de Melo Bezerra. I am a phd student at ITA (www.ita.br). I am doing a research regarding members’ motivation in virtual communities, and my case study is Wikipedia. I would like your collaboration in my research. If you are interested, I will send you some questions.

WikiCup 2011 August newsletter

The finals are upon us; we're down to the last few. One of the eight remaining contestants will be this year's WikiCup champion! 150 was the score needed to progress to the final; just under double the 76 required to reach round 4, and more than triple the 41 required to reach round 3. Our eight finalists are:

  • Scotland Casliber (submissions), Pool A's winner. Casliber has the highest total score in the competition, with 1528, the bulk of which is made up of 8 featured articles. He has the highest number of total featured articles (8, 1 of which was eligible for double points) and total did you knows (72) of any finalist. Casliber writes mostly on biology, including ornithology, botany and mycology.
  • Russia PresN (submissions), Pool B's winner and the highest scorer this round. PresN is the only finalist who has scored featured topic points, and he has gathered an impressive 330, but most of his points come from his 4 featured articles, one of which scored double. PresN writes mostly on video games and the Hugo Awards.
  • Zanzibar Hurricanehink (submissions), Pool A's runner-up. Hurricanehink's points are mostly from his 30 good articles, more than any other finalist, and he is also the only finalist to score good topic points. Hurricanehink, as his name suggests, writes mostly on meteorology.
  • Ohio Wizardman (submissions), Pool B's runner-up. Wizardman has completed 86 good article reviews, more than any other finalist, but most of his points come from his 2 featured articles. Wizardman writes mostly on American sport, especially baseball.
  • Principality of Sealand Miyagawa (submissions), the "fastest loser" (Pool A). Miyagawa has written 3 featured lists, one of which was awarded double points, more than any other finalist, but he was awarded points mostly for his 68 did you knows. Miyagawa writes on a variety of topics, including dogs, military history and sport.
  • Canada Resolute (submissions), the second "fastest loser" (Pool B). Most of Resolute's points come from his 9 good articles. He writes mostly on Canadian topics, including ice hockey.
  • Greece Yellow Evan (submissions), who was joint third "fastest loser" (Pool A). Most of Evan's points come from his 10 good articles, and he writes mostly on meteorology.
  • Australia Sp33dyphil (submissions), who was joint third "fastest loser" (Pool B). Most of Phil's points come from his 9 good articles, 4 of which (more than any other finalist) were eligible for double points. He writes mostly on aeronautics.

We say goodbye to our seven other semi-finalists, Another Believer (submissions), Poland Piotrus (submissions), United Kingdom Grandiose (submissions), Bavaria Stone (submissions), Norway Eisfbnore (submissions), Saskatchewan Canada Hky (submissions) and Wisconsin MuZemike (submissions). Everyone still in the competition at this stage has done fantastically well, and contributed greatly to Wikipedia. We're on the home straight now, and we will know our winner in two months.

In other news, preparations for next year's competition have begun with a brainstorming thread. Please, feel free to drop by and share any thoughts you have about how the competition should work next year. Sign ups are not yet open, but will be opened in due course. Watch this space. Further, there has been a discussion about the rule whereby those in the WikiCup must delcare their participation when nominating articles at featured article candidates. This has resulted in a bot being created by new featured article delegate Ucucha (talk · contribs). The bot will leave a message on FAC pages if the nominator is a participant in the WikiCup.

A reminder of the rules: any points scored after August 29 may be claimed for the final round, and please remember to update submission pages promptly. If you are concerned that your nomination, be it at good article candidates, a featured process or anywhere else, will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAC, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. As ever, questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup and the judges are reachable on their talk pages, or by email. Good luck! If you wish to start receiving or stop receiving this newsletter, please feel free to add or remove yourself from Wikipedia:WikiCup/Newsletter/Send. Copy edit drive

Hi, Katarighe. Thank you for your interest in participating in the Guild of Copy Editors July copy edit drive. This is just a note to explain to you that you seem to have misunderstood the purpose of the drive. What we are doing is finding articles that already have the copy edit tag on them, and performing the copy edits. On the two articles you have listed on the Drive page, you have done the opposite: you have added a copy edit tag to existing articles. If you are interested in participating in the Drive, please look through the instructions on the drive main page. For an introduction to copy editing, please refer to these instructions. If you have any questions, please post a message at my talk page. Sorry, but I will have to remove the two articles you posted on the drive page as the work you did on them does not consist of copy editing. Thanks again for your interest. --Dianna (talk) 02:51, 5 September 2011 (UTC)

Don't worry, I was confused with it but I will follow them and I will be able to do so. Thank You -- Mohamed Aden Ighe (talk) 17:49, 5 September 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, but you still are not understanding the concept here. The three articles you have added to your totals are articles that you have added the copy edit tag to yourself. This is not the focus of this drive. What you want to do is find existing articles that already have a copy edit tag on them, and then copy edit them, using these instructions. I am once again removing the articles from your listing, as articles to which you have added a copy edit tag yourself should not be included in your drive totals. --Dianna (talk) 00:45, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
I'm still now understanding. Sorry Mohamed Aden Ighe (talk) 00:20, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Only one of the sources even mentions Castro by name, and that source says he was acquitted. The Mark of the Beast (talk) 00:00, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

I've blanked the article because of the BLP issues. Please see discussion at WP:BLPN.--Bbb23 (talk) 01:24, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

The article Antonio Toro Castro has been proposed for deletion because, under Wikipedia policy, all newly created biographies of living persons must have at least one reference to a reliable source that directly supports material in the article.

If you created the article, please don't take offense. Instead, consider improving the article. For help on inserting references, see Referencing for beginners, or ask at the help desk. Once you have provided at least one reliable source, you may remove the {{prod blp}} tag. Please do not remove the tag unless the article is sourced. If you cannot provide such a source within ten days, the article may be deleted, but you can request that it be undeleted when you are ready to add one. elektrikSHOOS (talk) 02:26, 7 September 2011 (UTC)

Huge Mistake On Your Part

Hello, Cyfraw. You have new messages at Binlied2's talk page.
You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

Also, FYI, the message in question is from me. As I state in my post there, Binlied2 has not posted since April, so you really need to explain this warning to her. CycloneGU (talk) 23:31, 10 September 2011 (UTC)

New message there. You have not backed up your warning, edited MY post, and removed the post that I replied to. Right now you're not doing a good job in my eyes, so please address the concern that still has not been addressed. Since you've accused Binlied2 of something, the discussion obviously should take place there. CycloneGU (talk) 16:36, 11 September 2011 (UTC)

Can't be tamed song

As a duplicate article, Can't be tamed song can be tagged as A10, which I already did. The editor's apparently on crack or something, because they edited the existing article then made their new one. PIA head office

Hi! I notice you added http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Pakistan_International_Airlines&diff=436043311&oldid=435869942

It is useful to have PIA's prime hub airport posted. I have the belief that PIA's actual head office is not in the terminal but in a dedicated building (like how Air France has its HQ in a dedicated building at CDG Airport) - Do you know of any Pakistani friends who could help get a photo? Thanks WhisperToMe (talk) 01:37, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Could you please tell me where the discussion of renaming Abdul Haq (ETIP) to Abdul Haq (terrorist) took place? Geo Swan (talk) 02:17, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Nair-san

Hello Katarighe and thank you for the message. I understand you undid one of my changes to Nair-san_(film). I added a "peacock term" tag to the sentence which said "The film is said to be one of the best international movie ever made based on (the) historical event." The sentence did not have a citation and the film has not been released as yet. I was following the guidelines at WP:PEA(see puffery). You appear to be a more experienced editor and I am fairly inexperienced. I might have made a mistake or perhaps a citation-needed would have been more appropriate in his case. Nonetheless, thank you for the message. If my reasoning is appropriate, we might considering redoing the change. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 59.183.41.251 (talk) 11:08, 30 September 2011 (UTC)

Copyedits

Hi

I am trying to keep track of copyedits done from articles tagged during September 2011. This is because I am compiling a list that needs working on for GOCE. If you can possibly let me know of any articles you copyedit that were tagged as "copyedit needed" during September I would be extremely grateful!

The list is here User:Chaosdruid/currentgoingson/Other if you want to see what I am up to, though please do not modify it at present as there is a spreadsheet that is kept in sync with it.

Thanks Chaosdruid (talk) 17:37, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

Yes, I will try to do it as soon as I can. Thank You! -- Mohamed Aden Ighe (talk) 21:11, 13 September 2011 (UTC)

If this article must be deleted, then it should be merged to Wikinews, it's better way about the up to date information conflicting terrorism. User talk pages

Please do not blank sections of other users' talk pages without leaving an edit summary, as you did here. Unless there is a compelling reason for someone else to remove content, it is generally the responsibility of the user in question to decide whether or not refactoring is necessary. September 2011

Thank you for your contributions to Wikipedia. It appears that you copied or moved text from Terrorist incidents in Pakistan in 2008 into another page. While you are welcome to re-use Wikipedia's content, here or elsewhere, Wikipedia's licensing does require that you provide attribution to the original contributor(s). When copying within Wikipedia, this is supplied at minimum in edit summary at the page into which you've copied content. It is good practice, especially if copying is extensive, to make a note in an edit summary at the source page as well. The attribution has been provided for this situation, but if you have copied material between pages before, even if it was a long time ago, please provide attribution for that duplication. You can read more about the procedure and the reasons at Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia. Thank you. VQuakr (talk) 17:40, 17 September 2011 (UTC)

Autopatrolled

Hello, this is just to let you know that I have granted you the "autopatrolled" permission. This won't affect your editing, it just automatically marks any page you create as patrolled, benefiting new page patrollers. Please remember:

  • This permission does not give you any special status or authority
  • Submission of inappropriate material may lead to its removal
  • You may wish to display the {{Autopatrolled}} top icon and/or the {{User wikipedia/autopatrolled}} userbox on your user page
  • If, for any reason, you decide you do not want the permission, let me know and I can remove it

Red Link Recovery

Hello. As a French-speaking WikiGnome, I'd like to solicit your help in testing a new tool. For a few years now, the Red Link Recovery Project has been using the Red Link Recovery Live tool to track down and fix unnecessarily red links in articles. Recently, the tool has been expanded to work on non-English Wikipedias. A small set of suggested fixes for red-links on the French-language Wikipedia have been prepared and I'm hoping to interest some French-language speakers (such as yourself) to work through them.

If you are interested, please visit http://toolserver.org/~tb/RLRL/quick.php?lang=fr. Each time you refresh the page you'll be presented with three new suggested fixes. I'll be happy to answer any questions on the tools talk page. - TB (talk) 17:57, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

Thank you, I will take a look about it shortly. --Mohamed Aden Ighe (talk) 22:54, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

FAC withdrawn

I appreciate that you are acting in good faith, but it is best if featured articles are nominated by people who have worked closely on them. In this way, they can give reasoned replies to reviewers and be familiar enough with the sources to act on suggested improvements. Someone who has not worked on the article can not provide this input, so the nomination may continue until opposition to it becomes so overwhelming that the article is failed; this takes away time from reviewers. While the Canadian National Vimy Memorial article is of reasonable quality, it is not yet of featured quality, and principal contributors must be consulted before a nomination, as required in the featured article candidate instructions. Also, see WP:SIG. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 23:50, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

So, I have to verify first if the article is well and later promote the article if it's well. Mohamed Aden Ighe (talk) 23:52, 20 September 2011 (UTC)
No, in this case you should ask Labattblueboy (talk · contribs) if he's ready to bring it to FAC. SandyGeorgia (Talk) 23:56, 20 September 2011 (UTC)

GOCE drive newsletter

Guild of Copy Editors September 2011 backlog elimination drive update

GOCE September 2011 backlog elimination drive progress graphs

Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors September 2011 Backlog elimination drive! Here's the mid-drive newsletter.

Participation

We have had 55 people sign up for this drive so far, and 31 have participated. If you have signed up but have not yet copy edited any articles, please consider doing so. Every bit helps! It's not too late to join the drive if you have not already done so. Another great way to help out is to watch-list the Coordinators talk page and participate in the ongoing development of the Guild.

Progress report

So far, we have reduced the backlog by 75 articles, or about 19% of our goal. We have also cleared January 2010 off of the queue and are close to clearing off February and March. If each participant were to copy edit two articles from February and March 2010, they would be completely eliminated from the queue.

Rollover words

Several concerns have been brought up this drive about the usage of rollover words. Rollover words only count if they're from the previous drive. For example, if you received 1,000 rollover words in March and didn't participate in May, your rollover words return to zero. This is to encourage participation in multiple consecutive drives.

Wrong criterion

You tagged The Cruel Band with {{db-foreign}}, but there is no article on the Portuguese Wikipedia with this title. This criterion is ONLY to be used if an article has been copied verbatim from a foreign language Wikipedia; not for articles that are simply not written in English. For those cases, if you cannot read the foreign language or find a legible online translation for it to assess whether the article meets other speedy deletion criteria, you should simply tag the article with {{not-english}} and hope that someone on the translation project will fix it. WikiDan61ChatMe!ReadMe!! 14:19, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

Wow, very impressive!

I found you through Mohamedou Ould Slahi, which I have worked hard on in the past, and am trying to get psyched to do again. I have some general thoughts that I will start on the talk page.

Two things: 1) Will you review the article I added today? Mohamed Alanssi 2) Norway should definitely NOT join the EU. Thank goodness they didn't think for a second about joining the Eurozone.

Mnnlaxer (talk) 20:46, 22 September 2011 (UTC)

I'll actually will to do the thing. Thanks Mohamed Aden Ighe (talk) 21:42, 22 September 2011 (UTC)
Great. On Slahi, he is neither from Hamburg nor Montreal. He was only in Montreal for a few months. Mnnlaxer (talk) 03:57, 23 September 2011 (UTC)
Btw, the "very impressive" was about your user and talk pages - coding and such. I am not impressed that you have been adding "charge=terrorism" and "penalty=none" to detainees at Guantanamo info-boxes. That's not cool. Especially with Omar Khadr, who plead to a charge and was sentenced. (One of about 6 convictions in military commissions thus far) You obviously don't know anything specifically about Khadr. And I suspect that applies to other info-box edits, such as Mohamedou Ould Slahi. Mnnlaxer (talk) 19:57, 23 September 2011 (UTC)
Sorry, I was saying that he was not scentenced yet. I'm trying to get the up-to-date information. Mohamed Aden Ighe (talk) 20:59, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

Please be careful to only use Huggle / Rollback to revert obvious vandalism. This [1] is not a proper use of Rollback. If you are reverting something that is not obvious vandalism, please leave an edit summary explaining the reversion. Thanks! Sperril (talk) 23:11, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

Sorry for doing that, I will be careful --Mohamed Aden Ighe (talk) 23:12, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

Nomifensine

I am not playing or editing in unconstructive ways. I am proofreading against refs and medline and removing uncited changes. 70.137.150.125 (talk) 23:50, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, I thought you were trying something. Mohamed Aden Ighe (talk) 23:53, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

No problem, over time successive additions make the text diverge from the references, so I bring up the refs and compare and try medline searches for the claims if there is no match. Example is the zebrafish experiment, where it prevents a very specific toxicity, but this was not a model for treating parkinsons, but an experiment to elucidate a toxicity mechanism. 70.137.150.125 (talk) 00:04, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

Username block

Usually it's best to report usernames like that to WP:UAA, which is how I got to them.

I looked into those two. Neither has edited yet, and while they sound potentially promotional I'm not blocking them because we don't know how their creators intend to use them yet. Daniel Case (talk) 01:18, 24 September 2011 (UTC)

WikiProject Terrorism - Welcome Back!

Welcome back from Wiki Project Terrorism! I'm Katarighe, a Wikipedian member since 2009. I'm currently the successor of Sherurcij in September because, he has not edited Wikipedia using this account for a considerable amount of time since May 2010. We are trying to renovate the new WP page this fall 2011 and we look forward this month whats next. If you are interested, start the renovation with us and new awards on contributing terrorism are coming soon. The WP terrorism newsletter begins January 2012. See you on October for the updates on WP terrorism. I will send this message next month about the updates. Good Luck.

I've just signed up too. What happened to Sherurcij (speaker of the dead)? I sent him a wiki email a week ago. Mnnlaxer (talk) 04:45, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

This user was already welcomed. But I guess being welcomed twice (by template messages) doesn't hurt. (Just makes me think you don't look at pages before adding templates.) --Jean Calleo (talk) 11:36, 26 September 2011 (UTC)

Your reverts

Hi,

It seems you don't know what a valid/constructive edit is. you have reverted me twice here and here, even though i did inform you that ALL my edits to this article are constructive and were made in good faith. Please refrain from doing it again (or have the courtesy to provide a reason for it!). Thank you. 173.63.115.8 (talk) 20:42, 23 September 2011 (UTC)

Sorry, I AGF so I reverted what you did. Sorry Mohamed Aden Ighe (talk) 20:57, 23 September 2011 (UTC)
No problemo. can you self-revert on the article then and also on my talk page here ? Thank you.

Peter Oborne, and his Newsnight appearance

I looked up Oborne's Wikipedia page, and it was pretty hilarious in light of what's happened recently on Newsnight. I passed the link onto friends, only to find it had been changed back to normal. I wanted only to keep the joke going a little longer. I don't really think he's a British idiot, although the person who originally made that change is most certainly a comic genius. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 46.64.16.223 (talk) 00:23, 30 September 2011 (UTC)
