WikiProject Film Invitation

Video-x-generic.svg
Thank you for your recent contributions to one of Wikipedia's film-related articles. Given the interest you've expressed by your edits, have you considered joining WikiProject Film? We are a group of editors dedicated to improving the overall quality of Wikipedia's film-related content. If you would like to join, simply add your name to the list of participants. We also have a number of regional and topical task forces that you may be interested in joining as well.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask at the project talk page. We look forward to working with you in the future! Erik (talk | contribs) 21:55, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for the invitation, WP Film is a great resource for film-related editing. I'll have to decline as I generally don't organize in wikiprojects for various reasons. Editing in an area is sufficient for me, I hope that makes me an unofficial member ;) Cheers, jonkerz 22:09, 20 February 2011 (UTC)
That's fine! Just letting you know what resources are available. Keep up the film-related editing! :) Erik (talk | contribs) 22:21, 20 February 2011 (UTC)

Are you able to manually perform this split? It needs someone who knows the differences well. Timrollpickering (talk) 22:20, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

I moved one article to Mutualism (economic theory) and believe it's alright for a bot to move the rest to Category:Mutualism (movement). Feel free to wait for Libertatia to give her/his input as well. jonkerz 23:46, 28 March 2011 (UTC)

Wikituneup

Give me one good reason why you people keep removing wikituneup from the site? The list of wikis page simply states a list of websites that use the wiki software .. How the hell does the site not apply to that????? Irt3hj4y (talk) 15:44, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

Because Wikituneup does not seem to be a notable wiki. The de facto notability criteria on List of wikis is that the wiki should have a Wikipedia article. Browse the list yourself and you'll see that the only wiki with a red link is Wikituneup -- because the page does not exist. I suggest that you find reliable third-party sources and create the article, then, if the article survive the deletion process for new pages you may add it to the list. That is why your link keeps getting removed, and I'm sure that someone will remove it again very soon. This is the way we avoid the list turning into a big WP:LINKFARM and/or filled with non-notable wikis. jonkerz 16:00, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

The only reason why it's red linked is cause some dink removed it. The article was perfectly setup just like other webpage wikipedia entries. There is some sites on here that are garbage with little internet presence that have live pages on wikipedia. So don't say its because there is no page, cause there was one and it was removed for no reason!!!! Irt3hj4y (talk) 20:59, 5 April 2011 (UTC)

ITC External links

Dear Mr. Jonkerz, I am working for the International Trade Centre(ITC) with the IP address 193.239.220.249. The external links that I have added yesterday have been removed. I wanted to know if there is a way to contribute to Wikipedia pages without incurring into spamming. The relibility and transparency of our intentions hinge on the following points: 1)We are part of the United Nations 2)Our agency's aim is to share data on trade by country and products 3)The link gives direct access to the trade data of the specific product/country 4)No registration is required —Preceding unsigned comment added by 193.239.220.249 (talk) 10:02, 12 April 2011 (UTC)

ITC external links (cont'd)

Hello, I am working for the International Trade Centre(ITC) with the IP address 193.239.220.249. The external links that I have added yesterday have been removed. I wanted to know if there is a way to contribute to Wikipedia pages without incurring into spamming. Hi Divoc, to begin with, I highly appreciate that you declared your possible conflict of interest in this matter. Regarding the links, I primary made the editorial judgement to remove them since they were added en masse from what looked to be a COI account, not because ITC is a bad resource. In my opinion there is no room for links like these since Wikipedia is not a linkfarm, but other editors may feel different. If you still feel that the ITC links should be placed in the External links section I suggest that you leave a message on the External Links Noticeboard and ask the people active there, because re-adding them right away would probably be seen as link spam by a lot of other editors.
If you are interested in contributing to Wikipedia I think that adding inline text to articles using ITC as a source is a better solution. jonkerz 16:54, 13 April 2011 (UTC)

Major cleanup underway at Kayastha; your help would be appreciated

Greetings, I'm doing a major chop on Kayastha, removing caste puffery, adding proper citations about the controversy of their varna designation, and generally trying to hack out unref, OR, and other unsuitable materials. If you have any chance at all to chip in, it'd be greatly appreciated. Likewise, even watchlisting and keeping an eye out for upset editors removing my (full footnoted) notations about their possible Shudra status (an unpopular topic) would be appreciated. Thanks! MatthewVanitas (talk) 15:19, 19 April 2011 (UTC)

Watchlist'd! I'll try to chip in with some gnomish work, cheers, jonkerz 01:24, 24 April 2011 (UTC)

Tagging

The next time you come across a problem with an article, instead of tagging it, how about fixing it instead? Tagging merely pushes the problem off to someone else, and creates an unsightly article in the meantime. In my opinion, if you can tag 15 articles in the time it takes to fix 1, that time is much better spent correcting in fixing the single article. Tagging is, in other words, a very poor non-solution to a problem.

Placing tags is, in itself, not a means of improving the encyclopedia: It is only a means of asking other people to improve an article that you cannot or will not improve yourself. (from WP:OVERTAGGING)

Beyond My Ken (talk) 05:29, 24 April 2011 (UTC)

Thanks for adding the reference. I was about to WP:SOFIXIT using the same source as you but ran into an edit conflict when saving the changes. Fixing is superior to tagging, I agree with that, but when it comes to the decision of leaving an article unchanged or tagging I think it's a small net-gain to tag it. I'll read WP:OVERTAGGING and perhaps reconsider my stance. jonkerz 05:42, 24 April 2011 (UTC)
I see that you've reffed the other Community Board articles. That speaks volumes for you in my book. Thanks, and my apologies if I was too brusque earlier. Beyond My Ken (talk) 08:08, 24 April 2011 (UTC)

Invitation to take part in a study

I am a Wikipedian, who is studying the phenomenon on Wikipedia. I need your help to conduct my research on about understanding "Motivation of Wikipedia contributors." I would like to invite you to Main Study. Please give me your valuable time, which estimates about 20 minutes. I chose you as a English Wikipedia user who made edits recently through the RecentChange page. Refer to the first page in the online survey form for more information on the study and me. Hi Jonkerz. I appreciate for completing the survey two weeks ago. I would like to return your favor with a reward of an online gift card with no condition. Please leave your email address in the final version of survey of my project. In addition, you can get chance to win $50 worth of gift card. It takes only 10 minutes to complete the final version because it contains only 35 questions. If you have Wikipedia friends, please introduce this survey to them. Message added 18:50, 13 May 2011 (UTC). You can remove this notice at any time by removing the {{Talkback}} or {{Tb}} template.

I was wondering if you could tell me how to add a signature to the information I added? Thanks for the welcome! kld (talk) 18:50, 13 May 2011 (UTC)

Signatures are not used in body text of articles as it would make the text look messy due to the hundreds, sometimes thousands, signatures. This is why I had to remove your signs from Hybrid (biology) (but don't forget that your contributions still are higly appreciated!). The only things that are signed on Wikipedia are comments on user pages and the articles' discussion pages and so on.
The way contributors are attributed is by listing them in the article history (click on "View history" to see it), this is sort of a signature and it is done automatically when you save a new revision.
I hope this answered your question, otherwise just ask again and keep up the good work, cheers, jonkerz 02:19, 14 May 2011 (UTC)

Hi Jonkerz, thank you for your welcoming message. Is there a way I could "sign" my previous anonymous edits, so that I see on my profile what I have edited? Thank you. Vlasich (talk) 13:18, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

Unfortunately there is not way to sign anonymous edits, but it's possible to list all edits made by an IP with the Special:Contributions function (click here for an example). If you want to follow up on the pages you have edited you can add them to your Special:Watchlist; that way all the changes will show up automatically in list format. I hope this help, otherwise just ask again! Cheers, jonkerz 13:47, 12 July 2011 (UTC)

Babcock Borsig Service

Hello Jonkers. I followed your right suggestion and I added the references correctly requested from you. Sorry for the long time, but I had to find by myself the sources without having the possibility of translating them. Actually I translated the English voice from the original voice in German language, but in that voice there are no sources.
As you have much more experience then me, would you please notice the same lackness also to the original voice here listed [2] ? This way somebody could possibly translate in the right way the sources in German from the English voice. Thanks --Gabriele1972 (talk) 13:31, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Look at the German page now, you should be able to see the corresponding German template if you're logged in. The German Wikipedia uses Flagged revisions (a system in which all edits have to be marked as patrolled before they become visible to non-logged in readers), so you have to use this link if you're not logged in or if you want to view the page in Google Translate. A German Wikipedian will hopefully mark the edit as patrolled within a few hours. jonkerz 14:39, 1 October 2011 (UTC)

Hi Jonkerz,

Since you were a part of the WikiGuides project, I thought I'd give you a heads-up about a new way you can help/mentor newbies on en.wiki: we've recently released a feature called the Feedback Dashboard, a queue that updates in real time with feedback and editing questions from new registered contributors who have attempted to make at least one edit. Steven Walling and I are putting together a task force for experienced Wikipedians who might be interested in monitoring the queue and responding to the feedback: details are here at Wikipedia:Feedback Dashboard. Nigeria

Dear Jonkerz; Hope this meets you well? I want to commend you on you good work; however I am sure you are mistaken in some areas. 1. There are a lot more Christians than Muslims in Nigeria. Where did you get your own information from? Please check reliable sources like the World Bank Data-set or surveys carried out by The Nigerian Bureau of Statistics for this information. You probably got your information from the CIA website; that information is false. 2. Nigeria is not an Arabic country? I believe the language that you are aiming for is Hausa. Why don't you write in that language and not Arabic? 3. In the Article on USA, France, Germany and the UK; you don't have pictures of Negroes burning during the days of segregation and slavery and you don't have a picture of the horrors of the World Wars. Why is it that you try to stereotype us by having a picture of a starving girl during the long forgotten Biafra War? Most Nigerians don't even know about that war. Shouldn't that be on another page? Why did you not put up the pictures of the second largest man-made structure (once the first)"The walls of benin": http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Walls_of_Benin or even :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sungbo%27s_Eredo or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agbani_Darego, or http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Oluchi_Onweagba? Do you really mean to say that picture you have selected is more relevant than all these? Is this really how you reported for other countries? 4. There are a lot of Modern scenes in Nigeria. Why choose the ones you have here? This is the article people will look at when learning about Nigeria. You don't have to lie; why don't you tell the truth and give honest journalistic views and stop stereotyping? Finally If you don't have information from a reliable source, just don't talk about the issue. There have been many Kingdoms in Nigeria not just the Benin Kingdom; there was the Oyo Kingdom, the Hausa Caliphate and the Igbos had a flourishing and specific dynasty. I hope you will live up to the expectations of honesty, professionalism and goodwill. Please correct your article. Thank you, Have a good day. Tolu77.98.14.205 (talk) 03:07, 22 November 2011 (UTC)

Hi Tolu, I've actually only made one edit to that article, and it was a minor correction, so I'm not the best person to talk to. I also noticed that you posted this message to the article's talk page; that is a much better place and I hope that you'll get answers to your questions there. It would be great if you could change the page numbers to the archive.org version as it's available online, and then add an url parameter to the citation template. Howdy! Projects' main pages and are sorted this way to make them easier to find (articles are sorted in the same way, for example Botany in Category:Botany). The use is not obvious for categories containing only a few pages (like Category:WikiProject Red Link Recovery), but take a look at Category:WikiProject Organized Labour to see that it's actually quite useful. jonkerz ♠talk 11:10, 9 March 2012 (UTC)

poster fair use rationale.

I see you have been uploading some posters to the african films. The justification for fair use you included was "to provide critical commentary on the film, event, etc. in question or of the poster itself, not solely for illustration". I am not sure that that is actually the case, what commentary was provided via the poster or using the poster? It seems it was soley for illustration? Gaijin42 (talk) 15:20, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

Which poster are you referring to? I've only uploaded one related to African films, File:Les Accords de Bella DVD cover.jpg, with the rationale "Serves as 'cover art' to identify the article's topic" which I copied from another cover art rationale. jonkerz ♠talk 15:29, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
Is it actually a DVD Cover? In any case, I see two licensing templates on that file, and the first one is talking about the poster, and included the text I found above. I think there is likely some issue that needs to be resolved at a policy/guideline level regarding fair use, if the second license justification is allowed(for illustration), but the first is not. i will try to find an appropriate venue. Gaijin42 (talk) 15:34, 13 March 2012 (UTC)
It seems that this has been discussed before, and is currently allowed, so ignore me :) [[6]] Gaijin42 (talk) 15:39, 13 March 2012 (UTC)

Re:Endemic animals

You are right, I wasnt paying enough attention. One thing though: we probably have 100s of articles on Australian endemic Lepidoptera, so if you want to do it properly you should add that cat to all of those. Sorry for removing the cat. Ruigeroeland (talk) 14:43, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

No problem; I'll add as many as I can find once I've set up the category tree. Cheers, jonkerz ♠talk 15:13, 14 March 2012 (UTC)

Les larmes de l'émigration and Alassane Diago

See the note from User talk:Freecine at the foot of my talk page. I am inclined to accept it, sort of, can't see any motive otherwise. But it contradicts the sources. What do you think? Aymatth2 (talk) 14:50, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

After looking into it, I think the year/runtime/country should be 2010/78/France/Senegal. We can trust the author to know these specifics, and they are backed up by a few sources such a [7] (2010/78), [8] (2010/80), and [9] (2009/80). I think your version of the Alassane Diago article is better. The author naturally has a COI here and has removed the part about his father three times; I guess WP:UNDUE is the only possible reason to not include it. jonkerz ♠talk 15:26, 16 March 2012 (UTC)
That makes sense. I will tidy up the articles. I don't think the bit about his father is critical in a short bio, so will leave it out. Thanks, Aymatth2 (talk) 15:45, 16 March 2012 (UTC)

Thanks

Accidents

I think Stunt#Stunts that have gone wrong should be merged into the new article and a {{main} linked in it. Much of the stunt article is a list anyway and ought to really be full of prose.♦ Dr. Blofeld 20:09, 4 May 2012 (UTC)

I agree, good job on the article :) jonkerz ♠talk 07:41, 21 May 2012 (UTC)

Sister project links

Which edit did you disagree with and what links were broken?--Wikien2009 (talk) 15:46, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

I didn't revert because I disagree with your changes, but because they broke the template on pages without a parameter. Give me a moment and I will setup a sandbox to show what was broken. Brb! jonkerz ♠talk 15:53, 26 May 2012 (UTC)

Polybutadiene

Hi, I edited this article fairly heavily today. You have done a lot of work on this article, I can see. Hopefully I did not make complete mess. But if you have suggestions or objections, then revert or discuss. Thanks. --Smokefoot (talk) 03:28, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

Howdy! No problems, and thanks for notifying me. I went ahead and removed the commented out sections. They were unreferenced anyways (and fyi not written by me). Cheers, jonkerz ♠talk 04:17, 7 June 2012 (UTC)

National cinema navigation templates

In a discussion a while back, you offered to blitz these from film and actor articles, etc. Did you get anywhere with that, as I notice a lot are still showing? --Rob Sinden (talk) 09:05, 13 June 2012 (UTC)

Never did, because I never got any replies. Looking back at the discussion, I think it's OK to remove them anyway: only one editor thinks that they should stay on some articles (not based on any actual guidelines) while four editors think they should be removed (per WP:NAVBOX, MOS:FILM and WP:BURDEN). They clutter the page and, imo, are useless and ugly. I am typing this out for editors who may visit my talk page once the War on Templates has begun. I'll try to start in the next few days. jonkerz ♠talk 00:03, 14 June 2012 (UTC)
Thanks for your reply. I've been removing them manually when I see them, but it's an arduous task! They really don't serve any more purpose than a link to a Cinema of XXXX page would... --Rob Sinden (talk) 08:03, 14 June 2012 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:Fair Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand logo.png)

Ambox warning blue.svg Thanks for uploading File:Fair Trade Association of Australia and New Zealand logo.png. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. Hazard-Bot (talk) 05:27, 30 June 2012 (UTC)

Pilularia globulifera

This is an automated message from VWBot. I have performed a search with the contents of Pilularia globulifera, and it appears to be very similar to another Wikipedia page: Pilularia. It is possible that you have accidentally duplicated contents, or made an error while creating the page— you might want to look at the pages and see if that is the case. If you are intentionally trying to rename an article, please see Help:Moving a page for instructions on how to do this without copying and pasting. If you are trying to move or copy content from one article to a different one, please see Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia and be sure you have acknowledged the duplication of material in an edit summary to preserve attribution history.

It is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article. VWBot (talk) 04:09, 28 August 2012 (UTC)

Ready to assess a few endangered languages articles?

Just added quality assessment and importance to the {{WikiProject Endangered Languages}} template, thanks to your good example. That image you chose is certainly much more dynamic than a disappearing white square ... and inspired me to action :)

assess the article quality and importance!

Awesome ;) Actually, I only refined the category; the image was changed by OwenBlacker. But I'll definitely assess a few articles! jonkerz ♠talk 04:08, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

Misandry merger discussion

Hi Jonkerz, would you mind if I reformated your discussion point to reflect the "traditional" discussion response format, ie:

Oppose - (Your text goes here)

Thanks! Ebikeguy (talk) 13:52, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

Done! To be honest, I think the discussion is unnecessary, because they are obviously two different concepts, but well, well :) jonkerz ♠talk 14:03, 29 August 2012 (UTC)

Alejandro Chabán

Hi How can I update my information without it being reverted as it is old and outdatedAlechabannew (talk) 17:00, 31 August 2012 (UTC)

You will need references (3rd-party websites, books, newspaper articles, etc.) to verify the content; you can read more about references at Wikipedia:Referencing for beginners. Try to write in a more encyclopedic tone. For example, "Considered one of the hottest Hispanic heartthrobs in the entertainment industry", which you added here, is not encyclopedic and sounds very promotional, so avoid sentences like that. You are free to remove unsourced material if it is false. Also keep in mind that it is generally frowned upon to edit articles about yourself on Wikipedia, due to the conflict of interest, so you must be extra careful with your contributions! JEL codes CFD

Hi Jonkerz

I have closed CFD 2012 September 11 discussion on JEL codes as no consensus.

My closing rationale includes some suggestions on how to take this forward, which I hope you may find helpful. And if they are not helpful, please ignore them! --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 16:41, 21 September 2012 (UTC)

Thank you for your comments. I agree with your rationale and in hindsight I guess I should have seen it coming. In a few weeks, I'll probably proceed with re-nominating one or at most two categories at the same time, and if successful, use that outcome as a precedent for future nominations. jonkerz ♠talk 17:04, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
Hindsight is always 2o-20 vision, isn't it ? :)
It's up to you how to proceed, but I suggest that if the follow-JEL question is not resolved first, then it is likely to be be rehashed in multiple debates, with possibly inconsistent results. --BrownHairedGirl (talk) • (contribs) 17:20, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
I think it's pretty clear that these categories goes against multiple guidelines, but all editors do not agree ;) I'm afraid you're correct that an RFC is the way to go, and I'll look into it in a few weeks or so. jonkerz ♠talk 19:19, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
I was preparing for a long, long discussion before a very judicious person intervened. So, I guess we're both disappointed, right? In any case, I pass along a few added thoughts from this rough draft that never made it to RFC edit: http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=User:Thomasmeeks/Rough_draft2&diff=513928952&oldid=513913933.
Have a good weekend. P.S. You certainly don't have to, but I'd appreciate your informing Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Economics of future such proposals, as you did a 10 days ago. Also commendable IMO was your reexamining your own position in light of discussion and reflection. I try to do the same. It's the old principle of charity thing. --Thomasmeeks (talk) 21:41, 21 September 2012 (UTC)
Ending the JEL CFD was probably for the best, I think we would have been able to continue that discussion forever :) I'll notify WP:ECON as well as leave a comment on your talk page once I've set up the RFC, best wishes, jonkerz ♠talk 03:35, 26 September 2012 (UTC)
OK, thx. By coincidence, I'm currently working on a response to BHG's comment on my talk page, which might complement your concerns. Please feel free to comment there or on what follows from it if avoiding parallel ongoing discussions would be an advantage. There might be much more consensus in the end than earlier discussion suggested. So I hope anyhow.
P.S. Per User talk:Thomasmeeks#Category:Urban, rural, and regional economics, on further thought, it might be a good idea to run my proposed RFC by you 1st for your comments, if any. BW, Thomasmeeks (talk) 13:03, 26 September 2012 (UTC)

Hey Jonkerz. I'm dropping you a note because you used to (or still do!) patrol new pages. Evolution of the hippocampus

Hi -- just to explain what I did, I'm the author of most of hippocampus, but I actually wasn't aware of the existence of that subarticle until I saw the link you added. When I looked at it, I saw that it was full from top to bottom of false information -- clearly whoever wrote it had a very weak understanding of evolutionary relationships. The few correct things essentially duplicate info that is already in Hippocampus#Evolution. So it seemed like redirecting is the most useful action at this time. Regards, Looie496 (talk) 15:07, 31 October 2012 (UTC)

Hi! I very much agree and was thinking about doing the same. I added the link mostly to make editors aware of the article. It looked very much like a school assignment. Cheers, jonkerz ♠talk 15:14, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
By the way, the only reason I found the article is because Special:Random is my start homepage in Firefox :) jonkerz ♠talk 15:19, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
Ah, all I ever get from that is articles about train stations. Anyway, nice that we're on the same page. Regards, Looie496 (talk) 15:42, 31 October 2012 (UTC)
