Turingery article[edit]

I notice that you have recently edited the Heath Robinson (codebreaking machine)article.

In July 2012, you initiated the Turingery article and I then expanded it, including quite a lot of detail about the Lorenz cipher. Subsequently I have written the, as yet unfinished, article Cryptanalysis of the Lorenz cipher. I imported into it most of the contents of 'Turingery' because it seemed to be a better fit there. I wonder whether you think that I have done the right thing and perhaps 'Turingery' would best be relegated to a redirect to the Turingery section in 'Cryptanalysis of the Lorenz cipher'? --TedColes (talk) 09:58, 7 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Turingery article is a full well-referenced article thanks largely to your efforts and in my view should stay as such. Well done! -- Jonathan Bowen (talk) 08:00, 11 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Michael W. Shields, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G4 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a repost of material that was previously deleted following a deletion debate, such as at articles for deletion. Under the specified criteria, where an article has substantially identical content to that of an article deleted after debate, and any changes in the content do not address the reasons for which the material was previously deleted, it may be deleted at any time.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contactone of these administrators to request that the administratoruserfy the page or email a copy to you. Yaksar (let's chat) 11:55, 3 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Notability of streets[edit]

Hi Jonathan! In Russian Wikipedia we have a big controversy on notability of streets (some people think that our articles about streets should be deleted), so I'm trying to collect some material on state of the art in other Wikipedias. Could you please refer me to existing rules about notability of streets in English Wikipedia? Are in general sources mentioning the date when the streat appeared, its former names etc. sufficient to prove its notability? Or sources with more detailed historical information are required (like several paragraphs dedicated to the street)? Or all streets in big cities have immanent notability?Oleksiy.golubov (talk) 13:59, 23 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

There is no reason why streets cannot be notable and WP:GNG applies. There should be several references in WP:RS, ideally including books in my view. Including a history of the street in the article (ideally as a section) is certainly good practice. As a personal guideline, I like to have at least three or more other Wikipedia articles that are related to the street already in some way and can be interlinked - e.g., notable residents, buildings, institutions, etc. I also like to include literary references if possible. I don't think Wikipedia should be a gazetteer of all streets in large cities but certainly such locations can have a large number of notable streets, especially in the centre. Articles on streets are a good way of collecting together information geographically in densely populated locations. I would not advocate creating stub articles for streets with little content since notability should be demonstrated from the start. As an "incrementalist", I would start with really important and famous streets and then gradually expand with time. I hope this helps and good luck. It would be a great pity if the Russian Wikipedia had no streets at all in my view. — Jonathan Bowen (talk) 19:10, 24 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the explanations. In fact, nobody is speaking about forbidding articles about streets in Russian Wiki at all. We mostly have a controversy between people who think that a street is notable only if it is described in RS in detail (e.g. a special chapter in a book, or at least several paragraphs), and people who think that basic historic and geographic information is enough to create an article (e.g. a city map, and two lines about the street in a reference book on streets of the city, with dates of creation and former names of all the streets). The first point of view limits us to just a few most important streets in each city, while the second point of view allows to create articles about all streets of most big cities. Oleksiy.golubov (talk) 00:29, 25 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Somewhere between these two extremes would seem reasonable. Multiple mentions in references is important I think. Good luck with the debate and sorry I don't speak Russian!— Jonathan Bowen (talk) 10:59, 29 January 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Category:Cultural media[edit]

Hey there, I was just looking at Category:Cultural media, and I'm wondering what you had in mind when you created it back in 2009. My guess is that you were probably thinking of media dealing with the arts. But the term "Cultural media" is pretty ambiguous, and the category is currently being used for two rather disparate types of articles: both those dealing with the arts, and also articles pertaining to various ethnic cultures. It's rather a hodgepodge as things stand, and I really think something needs to be done about it-- but I'm not sure quite what! So I thought I would start by running this by you to see what you think. (Please be kind enough to leave a note at my talk page when you reply.) I was thinking of this being a container category for media associated with items under Category:Culture. Feel free to sort it out with suitable sub-categories. —Jonathan Bowen (talk) 12:55, 11 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Disambiguation link notification for August 13[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. Wikipedia appreciates your help. We noticed though that when you edited Ever Shining Circuit Cinema, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Hungarian (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

Ontario Highway 5A[edit]

I've reverted this edit to Ontario Highway 5A. A {{sia}} is a set index, a form of disambiguation for a series of related items. Disambiguation pages do not get {{stub}} or {{noreferences}} as they are not full articles. K7L (talk) 04:48, 31 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

People's Park disambiguation page[edit]

Hallo, There's a standard layout for disambiguation pages which have the title "... (disambiguation)", and I've reverted that part of your edit to People's Park (disambiguation).

It may be that you think the one in Berkeley should not have the "primary topic" status and the dab page should be at the base name. There have been two previous discussions about moving it, but in 2006and 2008 - you could start a new move proposal using WP:RM.

I'm not sure what logic has been used in ordering the various parks on the page, either in the past or currently, but I think some subheadings would be useful and I might have a go at splitting them by continent and see what that looks like. PamD 18:36, 11 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Certainly I would judge People's Park (Shanghai) more important than People's Park (Berkeley) as a major park in central Shanghai, for example, but I guess Wikipediahas a tendency to be USA-centric. I am not enough of a Vogon to fight this however. :) Happy editing! — Jonathan Bowen (talk) 05:55, 13 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

September 2013[edit]

Hello, I'm BracketBot. I have automatically detected that your edit toXintiandi may have broken the syntax by modifying 1 "[]"s. If you have, don't worry: just the page again to fix it. If I misunderstood what happened, or if you have any questions, you can leave a message on my operator's talk page.

List of unpaired brackets remaining on the page:
  • Congress of the Chinese Communist Party]]. Also nearby are the [Shikumen Open House Museum]] and the site of the [[Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea]] when Korea was a Japanese
  • com/2006/08/13/arts/design/13iovi.html Our Man in Shanghai: Ben Wood Takes On History] </ref>)

Thank you for writing new articles for landmarks in Shanghai. Your contributions are much appreciated! Zanhe (talk) 23:33, 5 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you, much appreciated, glad you like them. I had a wonderful month in Shanghai recently and noticed some of the interesting places I visited had no Wikipedia page or information that could be improved. — Jonathan Bowen (talk) 20:09, 6 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

DYK[edit]

Hi Jonathan, I've expanded your new article Wukang Mansion a bit and nominated it for DYK. You may wish to keep an eye on the nomination page Template:Did you know nominations/Wukang Mansion, which is listed on Template talk:Did you know. Thanks again for your contributions! -Zanhe (talk) 03:08, 7 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you, I did not realise the extent of the sad history of the building when I started the article, but I think that it is good that it is on Wikipedia. Thank you for your excellent additions and updates. — Jonathan Bowen (talk) 08:23, 9 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I just recently wrote the article for the tragic movie star Shangguan Yunzhu, but didn't know where she lived until reading your article. So thank you! The Wukang Mansion DYK has already been reviewed and approved. I've just nominated Wukang Road as well. SeeTemplate:Did you know nominations/Wukang Road. -Zanhe (talk) 08:52, 9 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
And thank you again for linking everything together so well. I like these sorts of connections that are possible on Wikipedia, even if this is a tragic one. I felt quite emotional once I realised the history, having only just visited the area. —Jonathan Bowen (talk) 09:53, 9 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]
