[edit]Gigantorhynchus scheduled for TFA
[edit]This is to let you know that the Gigantorhynchus article has been scheduled as today's featured article for January 23, 2021. Please check the article needs no amendments. If you're interested in editing the main page text, you're welcome to do so at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/January 23, 2021, but note that a coordinator will trim the lead to around 1000 characters anyway, so you aren't obliged to do so.
For Featured Articles promoted recently, there will be an existing blurb linked from the FAC talk page, which is likely to be transferred to the TFA page by a coordinator at some point.
We suggest that you watchlist Wikipedia:Main Page/Errors from the day before this appears on Main Page. Thanks! Jimfbleak - talk to me? 17:09, 11 December 2020 (UTC)

Regarding your reversion of my edit to "List of municipalities in New Mexico"
[edit]Greetings and felicitations. Regarding this reversion of my preceding edit, I admit that my changing the title of the "Notes" section is generally non-standard to Wikipedia (I was unaware of the work on the list articles before your comment), but my moving of the "See also" section is in accordance with MOS:ORDER. (I prefer to clearly distinguish between notes that citations and those that are explanatory.) What would you think of asking for consensus along these lines, at least to fix the section order of the affected articles, and preferably to also clarify the titles of the "Notes" sections? I would be willing to do the work on all of the affected articles if we had consensus. —DocWatson42 (talk) 07:33, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
- In other words, why not be bold? —DocWatson42 (talk) 11:01, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
- Hi DocWatson42. I'm happy to comply with MOS:ORDER certainly. For your second suggestion, I don't think renaming notes to be "explanatory notes" is a good use of time, as "notes" is not only standard in all 30 or so list of municipalities, but thousands of other featured lists, and thousands more featured articles. I believe a long time ago there used to be different formats for references which involved notes, so your suggestion would have made sense, however all modern featured lists/articles uses the standard references/notes format. Mattximus (talk) 13:09, 5 April 2021 (UTC)
Request related to taxons
[edit]Are Acanthocephala-related redirects only one you have done? Or are there any other animal group yet? I hope you give valuable info because mass-deleting will be in progress (per User_talk:Estopedist1#Discussion_about_mass_redirects). The sidenotice, I agree that massive red links (ie species) in genera articles may be annoying, but creating species articles are predominantly the work for bots. There are over 20 mln species but maybe even 100 mln --Estopedist1 (talk) 17:34, 6 April 2021 (UTC)
- Mattximus, just to note WP:SPECIESOUTCOMES if you are not aware of it. All properly named and described species are considered inherently notable and so worthy of an article. It has been agreed that fossil species can usually be treated in a single genus article, but extant species should have their own article. Peter coxhead (talk) 09:24, 8 April 2021 (UTC)
- @Estopedist1: it does not follow from "species are inherently notable" that "there must be at least a stub article for every species". If an editor creates a species stub article, it is very unlikely to be deleted, but it doesn't justify bot creation of stubs that are unlikely ever to be expanded. I've certainly created species stubs, but normally only for a reason, e.g. to replace a redirect from the species name to the genus, or to fix incorrect synonyms. List of cities in Nevada
[edit]Thanks for updating List of cities in Nevada. However, the work you performed left six inline citations with a "Cite error: The named reference Census 2020 was invoked but never defined" error. This is a Featured list, so hopefully you can correct it. Thanks for your consideration. North America1000 10:38, 25 August 2021 (UTC)
Sorry, but the same goes for List of municipalities in New Mexico. Before the sources were all in order (diff), but now there's a "Cite error: The named reference Census 2020 was invoked but never defined" for five citations in the refs section. This is also a featured list, but if it continues to degrade, it could unfortunately be delisted, unless it's fixed. North America1000 18:25, 25 August 2021 (UTC)
- North America I am aware, I brought both of them up to featured list. The problem is that I can't find the official citation from the US Census which I would like to add there. I have the raw zip file, but don't believe it's the best source to post here. Still a work in progress, if you want to help, please do! If you can find a better citation please do add it. - Thanks for the reply. I wasn't aware that you brought them to FL. I will make a note to work on this when I get some extra time. North America1000 20:35, 25 August 2021 (UTC)

[edit]Working on municipalities lists
[edit]Hi Mattximus, I noticed on your userpage that you are working towards/aiming to get FLs for many municipality lists in North America. Those lists seem like something I would be interested in working on as well, so I was wondering: are there any lists I can immediately work on/that are being worked on currently? Also, are there any useful resources (obviously besides census data) to use? Thanks!
(P.S. I see the general format is talking about stats on the state/province/etc itself, then on how municipalities are defined within that subdivision, then some extremes of the subdivisions, followed by a gallery and the table itself. Is there anything I'm missing?)
(P.P.S I see Districts of Panama is listed, but perhaps the Corregimientos of Panama would be a better fit, being that the districts have seats that are corregimientos? Obviously it doesn't translate exactly, but Provinces of Panama seems to mention that they are equivalent.)
Thanks! --eviolite (talk) 00:54, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
- Collaboration sounds great User talk:Eviolite! I'm not super active at the moment, just trying to update some of the american ones to reflect the new 2020 census. Was there one that you would especially like to work on? We can approach it together if you want. Mattximus (talk) 01:47, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
- I don't really have a specific preference since the lists should be pretty similar, at least within a country. Updating makes sense, though right now it seems I can only find the redistricting data on the census website, which isn't really immediately helpful. So, since I'm not really familiar with that, it might be simpler to do those after the data becomes more readily available. I see that all of the Canadian provinces/territories are done besides List of municipalities in Quebec, which I could start working on tomorrow as it's getting late. The table itself looks fine on that one (though after some research it seems the Region column may not be necessary, while the Regional county municipality column should probably include Equivalent territory). Thanks, eviolite (talk) 02:42, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
- Yeah it took me a while to find the official 2020 American census results, they are here [1] for Alabama, but you can search any state. You just have to click on "download" to get it into a usable spreadsheet. As for Quebec, User:Hwy43 has been the leading editor for all those municipalities, he is excellent and may offer some advice. Good luck! Mattximus (talk) 14:11, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
- For Quebec, I recommend any effort should wait until after the 2021 census results are released in February 2022. Hwy43 (talk) 15:38, 25 October 2021 (UTC)
- That's fair, given that the American census is now somewhat accessible and won't change for a decade the states might be a better shot right now. eviolite (talk) 17:42, 25 October 2021 (UTC)

[edit]Rhode Island Map sourcing
[edit]Hello,
A few weeks ago you asked me to provide the source and date for when I took the data for the Rhode Island population map. I'd love to do what I can to get it back on the article, and on February 2 I added a source and date to the map on wikimedia. Is this acceptable formatting to put it back on the page? Let me know what I can do to get it up to standard.

P.S. Here's the link to the map: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ri_towns_by_population.png
- Infrarrojo00 it looks good now, I just had to take it down because it was a featured list and the data was unsourced, just make sure to indicated in the caption that it's based on 2020 census data and should be good! Mattximus (talk) 01:36, 13 February 2022 (UTC)

Lists of Municipalities
[edit]Hi! I've created a new list for Arkansas in the style we discussed at Illinois. I've got it in my sandbox here: User:Straughn/sandbox. Would you mind checking it out? The major issue in this table is the dates of incorporation, which aren't currently sortable. I've started adding them using Template:Date table sorting. I did not include the "Settled" column from the previous article because I didn't think it was relevant and there is no easy way to find that information. Thanks! :Straughn (talk) 20:49, 13 July 2022 (UTC)
- Straughn This is amazing work! And so quick, some of these articles will go a decade without anyone updating them. The date column I can fix but only manually, I'm happy to help with this if you want to move your list from your sandbox to them main article page I can work from there. Flag Usage
[edit]Just so you know, I have no problem changing the HKG flag to CHN but your reason is not valid and all editors have to agree with it. You cited the following reason: "then it is inconsistent, must use either national flags or subnational flags (like HK), can't have both in same list"
This is precisely what is being done as we are using the Hong Kong SAR flag - so I'm not sure what you're trying to do. No one says Hong Kong is a country, Hong Kong is a SAR of China and if you click the HKG flag it directs you to it. I also found the fact you left MAC alone double standard. If you want to speak consistency, both HKG and MAC should have been changed to CHN, but you only changed HKG. Let's not pretend your edit was not political.
Lastly, we follow GAWC and GAWC simply sites "Hong Kong" per its website. If it had said Hong Kong, China, we would have done what you suggested. Hong Kong is part of China, there is no denial on that - but it is a Special Admin Region of China, until this status changes, the flag stays. Kazuha1029 (talk) 20:02, 22 January 2023 (UTC)
- The reason is simply consistency, Kazuha1029. NYC is part of the USA but we don't use the NYC flag. HK is part of China and so we don't use the HKG flag. Beijing is also a special province of China should we use a Beijing flag also? And yes we should change Macau to China as well, since it is a city in China. I've brought it up to the talk page. We either use subnational flags (like HK or NYC) or national flags (like China or USA), but mixing both is inconsistent. Mattximus (talk) 20:04, 22 January 2023 (UTC)

I've found enough RS to prove that this is an accepted genus, and I'm thus marking this as reviewed. I'll also add the original publication as a source here, as it seems like that's where the information is coming for. Thank you for your work!

Rcats for scientific redirects
[edit]Hi, in future it would be greatly appreciated if you could add rcats to redirects you create. Some rcats you may find useful are: R from species to genus
, R to monotypic taxon
and R from alternative scientific name
. For the last two it would also be useful for you to add the organism type, for example: R to monotypic taxon|animal
. Thanks! harrz talk 22:12, 31 March 2024 (UTC)
- I have not done this before, can I ask the purpose? They seem to link well without it. Thanks. Mattximus (talk) 03:07, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
- It doesn't affect the linking, but it's useful to document the reason for the redirect.
- Generally you should not create redirects from a species to its genus as you have done (unless the genus is monotypic). All species are considered notable in their own right, and a red wikilink for a species in the genus article indicates that an article is missing. Peter coxhead (talk) 06:28, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
- Peter coxhead: While I agree this is the case for many species, for those that have almost no information available, surely it's better to link to the genus page which contains all the information of the species/genus rather than a broken link or a stub? Consider the redirect for Apororhynchus aculeatus or Pachysentis angolensis. Any user looking those up would benefit far more from a redirect to the featured article or good article than do a blank page or a stub. Creating a thousand stubs or leaving redlinks is worse for the reader than redirects to higher quality genus pages *which contain all the information they may be looking for*. These species in particular are often defined in contrast to others in the genus, so it makes sense to group them. If there is more than a paper or two on a species and the genus page grows, there is no harm then removing the redirect at that point, but it would be worse for the reader to remove the redirect prematurely. Mattximus (talk) 16:12, 1 April 2024 (UTC)
- The issue of species redirects to genera has been discussed a number of times in the Tree of Life Wikiproject. As per this discussion, the problem is that unless you have set your user preferences to show a different colour for wikilinks that are redirects, you can't tell that the species article doesn't exist and so needs creating. Peter coxhead (talk) 16:02, 2 April 2024 (UTC)
- That's an interesting discussion and some other users echoed my point above, for this specific case I think it would be worse for wikipedia readers as a whole to fail to redirect users to a page containing *some* information rather than a stub or a blank page that will likely never be created. At the very least there was not a consensus reached. I do agree that you are correct for most species, but for super obscure ones, some information is certainly better than none. - The main reason is so that the reason for the redirect's existence is documented. Also, WP:RCAT states that redirects "should be placed into categories" and explains why rcats are useful.
