Welcome

Hello, Mssemantics and welcome to Wikipedia! It appears you are participating in a class project. If you haven't done so already, we encourage you to go through our training for students.

Go through our online training for students.

If you need help, check out Wikipedia:Questions, ask me on my talk page, or ask your question on this page and then place {{Help me}} before the question. Please also read this helpful advice for students.

Before you create an article, make sure you understand what kind of articles are accepted here. Remember: Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, and while many topics are encyclopedic, some things are not.

Your instructor or professor may wish to set up a course page, if your class doesn't already have one. It is highly recommended that you place this text: {{Educational assignment}} on the talk page of any articles you are working on as part of your Wikipedia-related course assignment. This will let other editors know this article is a subject of an educational assignment and aid your communication with them.

We hope you like it here and encourage you to stay even after your assignment is finished! Valfontis (talk) 16:59, 4 June 2014 (UTC)

Hi Valfontis! Thanks for your message. I've helped professors use Wikipedia in class, but (alas!) I am not using Wikipedia for class projects.--Mssemantics (talk) 19:22, 4 June 2014 (UTC)
Hi! Yes sorry, forgive me for templating you! I was trying to track down a bunch of students from the University of Washington and make sure they all got welcomed. I had to block some of their group accounts so I wanted to make sure everyone knew where to go for help! Several of them signed up with WikiProject Feminism during the same time frame you did. Wikimania 2014

Hi!

My name is Victor and I'm a storyteller and video producer for the Wikimedia Foundation. I'll be looking to capture stories about Wikimedians at Wikimania in London in a week. Here is an example of the kind of thing that I'm aiming to do. I saw that you're attending Wikimania and I was wondering if you might have some time to talk about what do you on Wikimedia projects. Anyway let me know if you are interested, I'll be at Wikimania from the 6th-10th of August and would need maybe 30 minutes of your time. I can answer any questions you may have. I’m best reached at vgrigas(at)wikimedia.org

It is a place where women can go and be sure they'll be able to participate in discussions without being dominated by men's advice, criticism, and explanations. If interested, your participation would be most welcome. Lightbreather (talk) 23:14, 16 January 2015 (UTC)

Thank you so much for coming in I was very glad we had this lecture because I feel like their are to many assumptions about Wiki that need to be explored. I found it helpful knowing that when people edit pages on wikipedia not everything flies they are heavily monitored to make sure accurate knowledge is being exported on the website. They are looking for articles and information that is verifiable, notable, and has a neutral point of view. Great information on the demographics of Wiki. -AU

Hi there, thank you so much for coming to class and presenting. One question I had was how much of your schooling or what parts of it have you applied to wikipedia? I learned that anyone can edit and that someone can filter through and figure out if the content is true.

Amanda,

Thank you for your presentation today on Wikipedia editing. In addition to being informative and relevant to my final project, I learned a lot things about the culture of editing Wiki articles. For example, I had no idea that the community could be so dramatic, especially when it comes to controversial topics and articles. Also, it opened my eyes to the subtle biases of Wiki articles that are stem from the editing community that I would not have noticed otherwise. It never really occurred to me that some people were mis- or under-represented in the editing community, and that it could lead to misleading information – I always thought the people who edited Wiki articles were non-biased professionals, but that isn't always the case.

Thank you for your presentation, Amanda. I did not know that editing on Wikipedia was on such a high-alert; I did not know that edits were monitored so much and that it was an actual job editing Wikipedia. -M.L. --Pennnikki (talk) 20:46, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

Comment to Amanda Menking about Wiki Editing Workshop

Thank you so much for your help towards our Wikipedia Editing Assignment. It was very useful information towards what constitutes a good edit. I didn't know that Wikipedia was so monitored, because I grew up learning that it was a bad source of info that shouldn't be cited. I also didn't realize how the online environment of Wikipedia can be so violent, and that most of the editors are 20 year old white males. I also realized that a good edit needs to be notable, and unbiased. I also never new that it was connected to other sub-sites like wiktionary or wikidata.

Thank you for speaking on how to edit wikipedia articles. I learned how to properly create a user account on wikipedia and how to properly edit articles within this workshop. This helped spur my own interest in skills on the internet and on popular websites such as wikipedia and wikimedia commons. Your tone and helpful nature is very much appreciated and helped me gain an important understanding of the skills needed to edit and write wikipedia articles.

AFRAM Lecture

Thank you for taking the time to come to our class and give us a little bit more hope that Wikipedia pages can actually be helpful! One thing that I learned about the editing of Wikipedia pages is that it is highly overlooked at by a lot of users and that there is a lot of input/ advice before majority of the information is made on the pages. I also learned that becoming a new user will be a lot of hard work to become a respectable user by the original users that have been around for awhile--FreeBee2015 (talk) 20:46, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

GWSS 241

Thanks for coming into our class today. I guess my main comment is that slightly disagree with your opinion of neutral point of view. I think there are many ways that a neutral point of view can be applied even to controversial issues and I feel that have the most neutral view possible vastly increases the credibility of an article. I guess I'm unsure why you feel that neutral points of view are irrelevant?

Thank

AFRAM 337/ GWSS 241 Thank you!

Thank you for helping our class today with having more knowledge about Wikipedia. Your presentation was very helpful to us and the tips you gave will come in handy when we have to edit Wiki pages ourselves. You have taught me many things that I didn't know about Wikipedia. I thought it was just a site where people write about topics and state their own knowledge. I didn't know that edits could be reverted back to the original edit. What you said about the stalkers and people making threats was interesting. It's really crazy that people would go to such an extreme over a website. Also another thing that was interesting was that there are chats where people talk about what will be in Wikipedia.

Hi Amanda,

Thank you so much for coming in and teaching us about Wikipedia! I learned that Wikipedia can be quite a hostile environment for editors. I learned that articles must be notable, verifiable, and neutral. However, it really is not possible to be neutral because there is always some sort of bias when writing an article. -GP Mrpacman 20 (talk) 20:48, 10 November 2015 (UTC)

Thank you for your presentation in class today regarding Wikipedia, its uses and some of the etiquette. I especially appreciate letting us know that we need to be respectful of the space as we are entering something that people have already worked hard on and care about. Although respect is always something kept in mind, letting us know to contact the editor/communicate what we are intending to do and asking them for feedback in return is very helpful. Thank you!
