Tips on editing

[edit]

Hi Ricky. Thank you for your enthusiasm and your hard work. I hope that the fate of the HK housing estates articles can be resolved soon. Here are a few points that could help you in editing. Good editing contributes to the quality of your articles, and of course of Wikipedia in general. My points are more specifically related to what I have seen in your articles:

  • Avoid overlinking. Dates in estates articles do not need to be linked. That would be useful in the case of historical events, but linking dates in general does not add value. There are even bots running across Wikipedia to delete these links. Also, avoid linking general common words unless they add something to the value of the article. You can also have a look at Wikipedia:Linking.
  • Group subjects. As you have noticed, many people disagree with the over-creation of articles. One reason is that when a topic is split into too many separate articles, then the overview is lost. In many cases, a general article is written, and if some part become very large, then a separate article may be written. For instance I believe that an article could at this stage cover all the designs of public housing estates. We may need separate aricles for Old Slab, Single H and Twin Tower, but probably not now. The job can be done by putting the information in a table with pictures, so that readers can at the same time have an overview of the topic. If these articles are merged into one single article, then their title can redirect to the new general article.
  • Sources. Providing good sources enhances the value of the articles and allows reader to further their research about a topic by looking at other websites. What makes a "good source" is a complex topic, as you have noticed, but I would say that a source that simply mentions the name of the estate is not a good one. Also, websites like wikimapia, which are wikis, are not valuable sources: it would be like citing other pages of Wikipedia as your source. In this respect, I would agree with the deletion of some of your sources by User:Unschool. Not appropriate sources cast doubt about the purpose of the editor and decrease the credibility and perception of notability of the article. I believe that Government sources are useful, because they usually contain a lot of information. What other people would like to see are additional sources which say something of interest about the estate.
  • Tag your articles as "stub" when they need to. A stub notice is a signal that an article maybe has potential to be developped.
  • Link your articles to the WikiProject Hong Kong, so that they are included in a broader project, rather then are isolated. Simply add {{wikiProject Hong Kong}} to the talk page of the article.
  • "public housing estate" is a general term, not only applicable to Hong Kong. I have changed the title of the article to Public housing in Hong Kong. Public housing estate now redirects there. I have started to change all the links to "Public housing estate" into links to "Public housing in Hong Kong", and I will eventually redirect "public housing estate" to the general article "Public housing". So I suggest that you rather write this way: "Shek Kip Mei Estate is the first [[Public housing in Hong Kong|public housing estate]] in Hong Kong", rather than "Shek Kip Mei Estate is the first [[public housing estate]] in Hong Kong".

The outcome of the whole discussion might be that several estates will end up being merged, maybe in the form of tables, and I do not completely disagree with that. As long as your articles are informative and provide sources, I believe that a good part of the material that they contain will be kept in some form. If you have decided to stop creating new articles for the moment, maybe you could use this time to improve the existing ones. Finally, remember to assume good faith when interacting with others. I hope this helps. olivier (talk) 10:45, 9 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Housing estates in Kwun Tong

[edit]

Hi Ricky, I noticed the good word you are doing in merging the articles. I just wanted to ask you if there are any particular reasons you decided to keep and Yau Lai Estate alive – there is nothing in the article which makes me believe it notable in any way? The old Yau Tong Estate may have a claim to notability because of its history, but again the case is not made; the new one is completely fails WP:N in my view. Also, I would enquire as to the logic of creating a new article for Public housing estates in Sze Shun? I suggest that we merged the contents to Shun Lee in the same way I merged Tui Min Hoi Chuen and ‎Lakeside Garden to Sai Kung Town#Public housing, and also Sha Tau Kok Chuen to Sha Tau Kok. Ohconfucius (talk) 01:40, 27 August 2009 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

I noticed that you have been reinserting interwiki links into the product of mergers. However, WP:INTER states that there should only be one link to a wiki of another language in each article. Therefore, I am removing the excess ones you placed at Cheung Sha Wan and Shau Kei Wan, for example. In order that the Chinese interwiki links land on the correct article, I have placed the chinese interwiki links on the redirect pages like here and here Ohconfucius (talk) 08:49, 2 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • The interwiki links we have been placing on the redirects have been creating havoc due to the way the interwiki bots work. The bot acting on the Chinese article sees the final destination (ie 'Public housing estates in Foo') and not the redirect, and replaces the interwiki link with one to the final destination. The same bot acting in en:WP, seeing the new interwiki link on the Chinese article, places a bunch of interwikis on the final destination. FYI, I am trying to work out a solution with the bot operator here. Ohconfucius (talk) 14:45, 16 September 2009 (UTC)[reply]

More deletions by ignorant foreigners

[edit]

Be careful that some ignorant foreigners are trying to delete more Hong Kong housing articles. (an example) They keep using the same stupid reason over and over -- "Oh...this housing estate is not notable." This is dumb. Anything that they have never heard of is "not notable". If you have some free time, please try to do something about it. Thanks. - Alan (talk) 04:49, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Alanmak, please refrain from personal attacks. We had this discussion a month ago at WPHK. It was decided that most public estates were lacking in notability. The very same rationale applies to private estates, except that the rich developers in the colony have tons of money to throw at the press. We can take the discussion there also, if you prefer. I believe most of them will end up getting deleted, or at best merged per WP:LOCAL. Ohconfucius (talk) 05:00, 7 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Greetings-- I wanted to let you know I very brainlessly must have hit the wrong article off your contributions list for a CSD, before noticing it was the one you were looking to have deleted, and that it was the normal CSD and not a PROD. My Huggle eyes must be blurry this late. I'm soooooooooooo sorry, and I had it reverted in less than 5 seconds. Please let me know if you have any troubles, but it seems you have a guardian angel admin already? Hello Ricky@36! Thank you for your contributions. I am a bot alerting you that 1 of the articles that you created is tagged as an Unreferenced Biography of a Living Person. The biographies of living persons policy requires that all personal or potentially controversial information be sourced. In addition, to ensure verifiability, all biographies should be based on reliable sources. If you were to bring this article up to standards, it would greatly help us with the current 332 article backlog. Once the article is adequately referenced, please remove the {{unreferencedBLP}} tag. Fair use rationale for File:Hometroopers.jpg

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:Hometroopers.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under fair use but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia constitutes fair use. Please go to the file description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Skier Dude (talk) 00:21, 10 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Overlinking to this level is just excessive. I found that it was simply quicker for me to completely rewrite the text instead of attempting to conduct a surgery to remove the brackets. Please do not repeat this... --HXL's Roundtable and Record 00:38, 17 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on Longhua Station requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A7 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be about a person, organization (band, club, company, etc.) or web content, but it does not indicate how or why the subject is important or significant: that is, why an article about that subject should be included in an encyclopedia. Under the criteria for speedy deletion, such articles may be deleted at any time. Please see the guidelines for what is generally accepted as notable.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion," which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. The article Estimated results improvement has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

This term does not appear to be supported by reliable sources. See wp:NEO.

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Hi. When you recently edited Wish and Switch, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Patrick Dunn (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

If this is the first article that you have created, you may want to read the guide to writing your first article.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Value Partners (Hong Kong) requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section G12 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the article appears to be a clear copyright infringement. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material, and as a consequence, your addition will most likely be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. This part is crucial: say it in your own words. Wikipedia takes copyright violations very seriously and persistent violators will be blocked from editing.

If the external website belongs to you, and you want to allow Wikipedia to use the text — which means allowing other people to modify it — then you must verify that externally by one of the processes explained at Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials. If you are not the owner of the external website but have permission from that owner, see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. You might want to look at Wikipedia's policies and guidelines for more details, or ask a question here.

If you think that the page was nominated in error, contest the nomination by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion" in the speedy deletion tag. Doing so will take you to the talk page where you can explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but do not hesitate to add information that is consistent with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Yunshui  09:44, 6 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A tag has been placed on File:Cscl.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia. This is a notice to inform you that a tag has been placed on Selling climax requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, images, a rephrasing of the title, a question that should have been asked at the help or reference desks, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Hi,
You appear to be eligible to vote in the current Arbitration Committee election. The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to enact binding solutions for disputes between editors, primarily related to serious behavioural issues that the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the ability to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail. If you wish to participate, you are welcome to review the candidates' statements and submit your choices on the voting page. The article Selling climax has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Orphaned for nine years, never had any reliable sources (just a wiki dictionary entry and a long since removed encyclopedia.com entry), but seems to be fervently protected by a small number of people. Possible a regional or company term. Suggest deletion and/or merging into a similar article if it can be verified.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion.
