Let's try not to get into a revert war over this. I removed the current address of the house because it is a private residence and is not open to members of the public. There is a longstanding problem with tourists knocking on the door and generally disturbing the peace in the area, so it is best for the article not to give the full current address of the house. There is a photo of what the house currently looks like for anyone who is determined to visit it. As a general rule, Wikipedia articles do not give the addresses, phone numbers etc of private residences. --♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 16:33, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free media (Image:NY Yankee logo.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading Image:NY Yankee logo.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BetacommandBot 02:15, 12 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fair use rationale for Image:Highwayptch.gif

[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to Image:Highwayptch.gif. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in Wikipedia articles constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use. Suggestions on how to do so can be found here.

Please go to the image description page and edit it to include a fair use rationale. Using one of the templates at Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy, but remember that you must complete the template. Do not simply insert a blank template on an image page.

If you have uploaded other fair use media, consider checking that you have specified the fair use rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been uploaded, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Some examples can be found at Wikipedia:Use rationale examples. Please also consider using {{non-free fair use in|article name}} or one of the other tags listed at Wikipedia:Image copyright tags/Non-free. Thank you. MECUtalk 19:19, 30 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed fair use rationale for Image:OklahomaHP.jpg

[edit]

Thank you for uploading Image:OklahomaHP.jpg. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this image under "fair use" may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the image description page and add or clarify the reason why the image qualifies for fair use. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Fair use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your image is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a fair use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for images used under the fair use policy require both a copyright tag and a fair use rationale.

California sheriff's department moves

[edit]

Hi. I appreciate the work you've been doing on Californian law enforcement agencies. I noticed today, though, that you were moving a lot of sheriff's department articles to new names. Before you move any more articles, has there been a consensus on this kind of renaming at WP:LE or elsewhere?

The reason for my concern is that these renamings are putting the articles at not-entirely-obvious, non-official variations of the actual departments' names without having an apparent need to do so. For example, the name of the San Francisco Sheriff's Department is not "San Francisco, California Sheriff's Department," nor, to my knowledge, is there any need to disambiguate it from any other San Francisco Sheriff's Department elsewhere. In the cases of the myriad Washington County Sheriff's Departments that are sure to exist across the US, disambiguation and pagemove renaming would be necessary, but in a format showing the incidental state identifier as being parenthetical to, and separate from, the official name, e.g., "Washington County Sheriff's Department (New Somestate)."

Also, "San Francisco, California Sheriff's Department," by strict grammar, implies that "San Francisco" is an additional clause or subset to "California Sheriff's Department," which does not exist. If using that format, the state name would have to be separated out as a parenthetical clause with two commas -- e.g., "San Francisco, California, Sheriff's Department." However, that's not the official name of the department. Better to leave it at its plain name until another article pops up that needs to share the name, and then to just place a further identifier parenthetically at the end of the title, so that the organization's true name isn't broken in the middle (which can hamper certain kinds of searches). --Dynaflow babble 01:36, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Oh, one other thing. Please don't try to undo page moves yourself. If I recall correctly, it screws up something with redirects and article and talk-page histories when pagemoves are reversed without using either admin tools or rollback rights. I can actually take care of all those pagemoves tomorrow or Monday. --Dynaflow babble 06:13, 16 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

RE: Style question

[edit]

In general I would advise that you ask at WP:LE's talk page, however this isn't frequented by many users. If the disupute escalates/remains unresolved you could try a 3rd opinion? I confess I do not see how one choice could be too much better than the other. SGGH speak! 21:14, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My recent rollbacks

[edit]

Well, congratulations on your rollback status. I seem to be the first editor you are trying your new found tool on. I read your remarks on my talk page and have asked for some consensus from the Law Enforcement Project. However, I was slightly distressed to discover that you have rolled back many of my page changes prior to any actual discussion. I would have preferred you waited until this could have been agreed upon. At this point I am unaware of any actual violations of any policy, so it is just two opinions. Mine is certainly open for change.

You stated that the actual name of the department should be used. I agree with you. However, in regard to the San Francisco Sheriff's Department, what is the actual name? I have seen it listed variously as:

  • The City and County of San Francisco Sheriff's Department
  • The Sheriff's Department of the City and County of San Francisco
  • The San Francisco Sheriff's Department

The official website uses the headings CCSF Sheriff's Department

I work for the Suffolk County Sheriff's Office in New York State. My Office is referred to variously as:

  • The Suffolk County Sheriff's Office
  • The Suffolk County Sheriff's Department
  • The County of Suffolk, Office of the Sheriff
  • The Suffolk County Office of the Sheriff
  • Office of the Sheriff, Suffolk County, NY

I added considerable content to various lists and was finding links directed to the incorrect state. I began to list them including the state name for clarity. While I can agree that the San Francisco Sheriff's Department is not going to be confused with another organization, it was changed in a effort to provide consistency and the redirect page should have sufficed for anyone hitting the older title. You also mention that the strict use of grammar would seem to prohibit the title as I change it. Perhaps, but it is not unheard of to refer to other departments in this fashion.

Please let me know if you have any other input on the naming of law enforcement agancy pages, as this is "my thing" and I rarely venture off the reservation. I would like to use one style of naming the departments. Some of the options I have come up with include:

  • San Francisco Sheriff's Department (California)
  • San Francisco Sheriff's Department (CA)
  • San Francisco, CA Sheriff's Department
  • San Francisco, California Sheriff's Department
  • San Francisco, CA, Sheriff's Department
  • San Francisco, California, Sheriff's Department

I am not sure what the other members of the Law Enforcement Project will say, but I will wait for some kind of consensus before renaming any additional pages. I would appreciate you leaving these pages alone until others have joined the discussion. It also appears that the use of rollbacks for content disputes is discouraged and should be used only in relation to vandalism or a consensus. SGT141 (talk) 22:12, 17 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I actually only rolled back a few of your pagemoves before my NyQuil took effect (I've had some long-lived variety of flu for the past week or so) and I stopped for need of rest and for fear of making sedative-addled wiki-mistakes. [edit: Looking into article histories now, others seem to have finished what I started, e.g., http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=San_Francisco_Sheriff%27s_Department&diff=198652727&oldid=198405675.] I based my finding of consensus on this thread: Wikipedia:Administrators' noticeboard/IncidentArchive385#Need sysop help to roll back large number of good-faith/badly-executed pagemoves, in which experienced admins agreed that the pagemoves weren't in keeping with the Wikipedia:Manual of Style, and granted me rollback to return those articles to their "zero state." As I suggested, and as User:bibliomaniac15 also suggests in the above-linked ANI thread, a good format, consistent with MOS, could be "Name of the Department (Incidental Geographic Identifier)." It would be good to move many of the articles on departments with similar names to that format; I just wanted to make sure those moves were done from the original titles, so we wouldn't have to deal with double- or (shudder) triple-redirects or anything like that. --Dynaflow babble 05:17, 18 March 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Welcome to Wikipedia. Although everyone is welcome to contribute constructively to the encyclopedia, you may not know that Wikipedia has a Manual of Style that should be followed to maintain a consistent, encyclopedic appearance. Using different styles throughout the encyclopedia, as you did in Shenandoah, Iowa Police Department, makes it harder to read. An editor has nominated List of motorcycle clubs, an article which you have created or worked on, for deletion. We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion by adding your comments at Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/List of motorcycle clubs (2nd nomination) and please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 10:59, 7 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Categories

[edit]

Please note that it is not necessary or desirable to add Category:Law enforcement to every article about a law enforcement agency. The categorisation should be as exact as possible so, for instance, Category:United States sheriffs' departments is perfectly sufficient. -- Necrothesp (talk) 13:26, 8 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

thanks for your detailed answer. I really thought they were nationwide, guess that spending most of my time in NYC and the suburbs and seeign their presence here confused me. I see what you mean re: the large presence in New York and I think we need to add some of that into the article. I'm happy to help when I have tme, although I don't know much about the organization. US LEA names

[edit]

Whilst there might be some consensus that I've missed, surely inserting the state name into the article title is confusing unless their are other similarly-named agencies in other states. It implies that the agency name includes the state name, when it doesn't. Wouldn't it be better to disambiguate, where necessary, using the state name in brackets after the actual agency name? Keep up the good work, anyway! ninety:one 13:06, 31 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Your uploads

[edit]

Good day. I see that you have uploaded a number of images to Wikipedia. First off, thank you for your contributions. Unfortunately, there are some guidelines that we need to follow with copyrighted images. Specifically, you need to add a source for the image (a link to a website will do), a copyright tag (there are some listed at WP:ICT), and a rationale explaining why we can use a copyrighted image (explained at WP:NFURG). I see that your images fail to include one of these. Please stop uploading images and address the concerns listed above. If you need assistance, you can ask at the help desk. If you do not fix these images, and you continue to make bad uploads, you will be blocked and your images will be deleted. Thanks for your contributions! Hello, this is a message from an automated bot. A tag has been placed on Alabama Department of Public Safety, by another Wikipedia user, requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. The tag claims that it should be speedily deleted because Alabama Department of Public Safety is unquestionably copyright infringement, and no assertion of permission has been made.

To contest the tagging and request that administrators wait before possibly deleting Alabama Department of Public Safety, please affix the template {{hangon}} to the page, and put a note on its talk page. If the article has already been deleted, see the advice and instructions at WP:WMD. Feel free to contact the bot operator if you have any questions about this or any problems with this bot, bearing in mind that this bot is only informing you of the nomination for speedy deletion; it does not perform any nominations or deletions itself. Replaceable fair use Image:MD - State Police Troops.png

[edit]
Replaceable fair use
Replaceable fair use

Thanks for uploading Image:MD - State Police Troops.png. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information. If you believe this media is not replaceable, please:

  1. Go to the media description page and edit it to add {{di-replaceable fair use disputed}}, without deleting the original replaceable fair use template.
  2. On the image discussion page, write the reason why this image is not replaceable at all.

Alternatively, you can also choose to replace this non-free media by finding freely licensed media of the same subject, requesting that the copyright holder release this (or similar) media under a free license, or by taking a picture of it yourself.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified how these images fully satisfy our non-free content criteria. You can find a list of description pages you have edited by clicking on this link. Note that even if you follow steps 1 and 2 above, non-free media which could be replaced by freely licensed alternatives will be deleted 2 days after this notification (7 days if uploaded before 13 July 2006), per our non-free content policy. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. SchuminWeb (Talk) 05:15, 6 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

This is an automated message from CorenSearchBot. I have performed a web search with the contents of Alaska Department of Public Safety, and it appears to include a substantial copy of http://www.dps.state.ak.us. For legal reasons, we cannot accept copyrighted text or images borrowed from other web sites or printed material; such additions will be deleted. You may use external websites as a source of information, but not as a source of sentences. See our copyright policy for further details.

This message was placed automatically, and it is possible that the bot is confused and found similarity where none actually exists. If that is the case, you can remove the tag from the article and it would be appreciated if you could drop a note on the maintainer's talk page. File Copyright problem

Thank you for uploading File:USA - NOAA ACO Award With S.png. However, it currently is missing information on its copyright status. Wikipedia takes copyright very seriously. It may be deleted soon, unless we can determine the license and the source of the file. If you know this information, then you can add a copyright tag to the image description page.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their license and tagged them, too. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link.

Orphaned non-free media (File:CA - Sacramento Police.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:CA - Sacramento Police.jpg.

Sacramento County Sheriff's Department move

[edit]

Is there a reason the Sacramento County Sheriff's Department page was moved to Sacramento County Sheriff's Department (California)? Is there another Sacramento County Sheriff's Department such that the page requires disambiguation? The Wikipedia policy (and widespread consensus dictates) that disambiguation pages are used "when a single term can be associated with more than one topic". What is this department to be confused with? Is there another Sacramento County Sheriff's Department you know about? Int21h (talk) 04:09, 23 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Depending on how you read this, it might be compulsory anyway... ninety:one 15:17, 24 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I replied to User:Ninetyone on his talk page under your edit. I really shouldn't have to say this, but your comments come off as very rude and disrespectful. But I'm sure that's not what you meant when you said "Thanks for replying to Int21h. I guess we will run into folks that are not interested in the project and will get upset when their pet articles are changed." and "Probably a personality disorder, lol." Right? Int21h (talk) 20:24, 25 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The discussion on the Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Law Enforcement#Disambiguation_for_US_LEAs section is ongoing, and only 4 users have voiced support for the move, and that is not (in my humble opinion) a consensus. In any event, the discussion was started over articles that need disambiguation. Is (was) there any reason to believe this article needed disambiguation? Is there another Sacramento County somewhere I don't know about? As I pointed out in the discussion, the Wikipedia:Naming conventions (government departments and ministers) have always clearly stated pre-disambiguation shall not be carried out "in the event of the jurisdiction name being a natural part of the subject's name". Even one 1 of the 4 that voiced support (against 2) of the policy have stated the page should be moved back, and I plan on reverting your move (which was done even after I asked for a discussion on the matter before it be done again) to the original title. I would like to have your opinions on the matter. (On the article's talk page, of course, so everyone can see.) Int21h (talk) 18:30, 17 June 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Houston Police Department

[edit]

You said: "05:14, 13 July 2009 SGT141 (talk | contribs | block) moved Houston Police Department to Houston Police Department (Texas) over redirect ‎ (As there is a Houston Police in Alaska, (http://www.ci.austin.mn.us/Police/index.html) the disambiguation should be here) "

But the Houston Police Department almost everyone is going to be searching for is Houston, Texas. Look, there's a Houston, Alaska, but the article at Houston is the Texas city. Out of all of the Houstons by far the Houston in Texas is the one most people are going to be searching for. So this applies to the police department. Plus, Houston, Alaska's police department should not have its own article, unless there are countless sources documenting it. Otherwise all of the police info belongs at Houston, Alaska.

Article titles need to reflect common usage. The article name Houston Police Department needs to reflect the Texas department. WhisperToMe (talk) 07:17, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(government_departments_and_ministers) says: "This is, generally speaking, in keeping with the pre-disambiguation principle used for warships and cities in United States. Pre-disambiguation shall be mandatory except in the circumstances discussed below."
"in the event that the suffix "of Jurisdictionname" is a natural part of the subject's name and/or is the overwhelmingly-utilized means of disambiguating in common speech, e.g. Cabinet of Germany, Prime Minister of Japan, Treasurer of Australia. Care shall be taken to avoid Something of Something of Jurisdictionname constructions." (I added the emphasis)
Houston is a city of the United States, and it is at that title
The moving of the page to "Houston" shows that the city is the "overwhelmingly-utilized means of disambiguating in common speech" - Also there is an expectation for international users that they will know the name "Houston" like they do "New York," "Los Angeles," etc
WhisperToMe (talk) 07:40, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
I will kindly ask you to look at Wikipedia_talk:Naming_conventions_(government_departments_and_ministers)#Non-ambiguous_municipal_entities WhisperToMe (talk) 07:49, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]
1. On Wikipedia these "message boards" are where interpretations of policies and guidelines are discussed. It is clear that there has been no consensus established for your actions.
2. Wikipedia:Naming_conventions_(government_departments_and_ministers), what you are referring to, is a guideline, not policy. The guideline says " It is a generally accepted standard that editors should attempt to follow, though it is best treated with common sense and the occasional exception." - Common sense tells me that the "Houston Police Department" should be at that location. It tells other people too.
3. "The US Postal Service expects you to write Houston, Texas on the envelope, does it not?" - We have already considered that. The guideline page that you cited said "This is, generally speaking, in keeping with the pre-disambiguation principle used for warships and cities in United States." and large cities in the United States get to have the state part omitted, i.e. New York City, Los Angeles, Chicago, Houston, Philadelphia, Dallas etc. The pre-disambiguation principle that lets the cities off the hook regarding the state names is supposed to apply to these police departments too.
4. "There is no other cities named New York City or Los Angeles that I am aware of." Firstly, there is a Los Angeles Subdivision, Texas. You said: "There are, however, 12 other cities in the United State named Houston" Secondly, the principle applies with large cities where an overwhelming number of people will be referring to one particular city, whether there are other cities with the same name or not. I.E. Philadelphia points to the Pennsylvania city while Philadelphia, Mississippi exists.
6. "but your actions are the ones violating the policy" - This is an innapropriate accusation considering that we aren't discussing a policy here.

A tag has been placed on File:CSA Captain.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, you may contest the deletion by adding {{hangon}} to the top of the page that has been nominated for deletion (just below the existing speedy deletion or "db" tag), coupled with adding a note on the talk page explaining your position, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. An editor has nominated one or more articles which you have created or worked on, for deletion. The nominated article is Cheltenham Township Police Department (Pennsylvania). We appreciate your contributions, but the nominator doesn't believe that the article satisfies Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion and has explained why in his/her nomination (see also Wikipedia:Notability and "What Wikipedia is not").

Your opinions on whether the article meets inclusion criteria and what should be done with the article are welcome; please participate in the discussion(s) by adding your comments to Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Cheltenham Township Police Department (Pennsylvania). Please be sure to sign your comments with four tildes (~~~~).

You may also edit the article during the discussion to improve it but should not remove the articles for deletion template from the top of the article; such removal will not end the deletion debate.

Please note: This is an automatic notification by a bot. I have nothing to do with this article or the deletion nomination, and can't do anything about it. --Erwin85Bot (talk) 01:22, 11 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Image uploads

[edit]

Thank you for uploading free images/media to Wikipedia! As you may know, there is another Wikimedia Foundation project called Wikimedia Commons, a central media repository for all free media. In future, please upload media there instead (see m:Help:Unified login). That way, all of the other language Wikipedias can use them too, as well as our many sister projects. This will also allow our visitors to search for, view and use our media in one central location. If you wish to move previous uploads to Commons, see Wikipedia:Moving images to the Commons (you may view previous uploads by going to your user contributions on the left and choosing the 'file' namespace from the drop down box (or see [1]). Please note that non-free content, such as images claimed as fair use, cannot be uploaded to the Wikimedia Commons. Help us spread the word about Commons by informing other users, and please continue uploading!

Replaceable fair use File:VA - State Police Division map.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:VA - State Police Division map.png.

Thank you. SchuminWeb (Talk) 19:19, 16 April 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You are now a Reviewer

[edit]

Hello. Your account has been granted the "reviewer" userright, allowing you to review other users' edits on certain flagged pages. Pending changes, also known as flagged protection, is currently undergoing a two-month trial scheduled to end 15 August 2010.

Reviewers can review edits made by users who are not autoconfirmed to articles placed under pending changes. Pending changes is applied to only a small number of articles, similarly to how semi-protection is applied but in a more controlled way for the trial. The list of articles with pending changes awaiting review is located at Special:OldReviewedPages.

When reviewing, edits should be accepted if they are not obvious vandalism or BLP violations, and not clearly problematic in light of the reason given for protection (see Wikipedia:Reviewing process). More detailed documentation and guidelines can be found here.

If you do not want this userright, you may ask any administrator to remove it for you at any time. Courcelles (talk) 18:37, 19 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi! File:LA - DOC Facilities.png is not a logo. Do you believe that this is a copyright free map? There is no justification for uploading any copyrighted map because it is possible to create a free-use map, replacing the function of any copyright map.

The article Lincoln County Sheriff's Office has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Disambiguation page that disambiguates no articles

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{dated prod}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. The speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Whpq (talk) 10:34, 15 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Vector images

[edit]

Do you have the capability to produce vector graphics? I saw your edits to Flags of the United States armed forces and was about to revert them, until I remembered that you produce a huge amount of image files, and it might be better to fix the source. In almost every circumstance, i would prefer the Scalable Vector Graphics file to a raster graphics format. If not, can you start making requests at Wikipedia:Graphic Lab? bahamut0013wordsdeeds 15:58, 15 October 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia Campus Ambassadors wanted at LSU

[edit]

Hi! I'm leaving you this message because you indicated an association with Louisiana State University. The Wikipedia Ambassador Program is currently looking for Campus Ambassadors to help with Wikipedia assignments at LSU, which will be participating in the Public Policy Initiative for the Spring 2011 semester. The role of Campus Ambassadors will be to provide face-to-face training and support for students on Wikipedia-related skills (how to edit articles, how to add references, etc.). This includes doing in-class presentations, running workshops and labs, possibly holding office hours, and in general providing in-person mentorship for students.

Prior Wikipedia skills are not required for the role, as training will be provided for all Campus Ambassadors (although, of course, being an experienced editor is a plus).

If you live near Baton Rouge and you are interested in being a Wikipedia Campus Ambassador, or know someone else from the area who might be, please email me or leave a message on my talk page.--Sage Ross - Online Facilitator, Wikimedia Foundation (talk) 17:05, 6 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for uploading File:CT - Judicial Marshal.png. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

A tag has been placed on File:USA - Border Patrol.png requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F1 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because the image is an unused redundant copy (all pixels the same or scaled down) of an image in the same file format, which is on Wikipedia (not on Commons), and all inward links have been updated.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion," which appears inside of the speedy deletion ({{db-...}}) tag (if no such tag exists, the page is no longer a speedy delete candidate). Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. ww2censor (talk) 16:03, 9 May 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Marine Combat Aircrew Badge

[edit]

SGT141, I noticed that the Marine Combat Aircrew Badge, pictured here and here, have the wrong service stars attached to this badge. The Marine Combat Aircrew Badge uses small gold and silver service stars, also known as combat stars. The stars currently displayed on the Marine Combat Aircrew Badge are traditional bronze service stars that are worn on U.S. Military ribbons and medals. The original upload of the Marine Combat Aircrew Badge is the most correct version on Wikipedia. Since you appear to be the most recent editor of these images, would you mind reverting this stand-alone image and updating the Marine Aviation Badges image with the correct Combat Aircrew Badge? --McChizzle (talk) 00:57, 20 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Done. And thanks for the heads up. If you notice any others, let me know and I will try to correct them. SGT141 (talk) 15:22, 20 June 2011 (UTC)
Thank you for updating the badge SGT141. If there is anything I can do for you, please don't hesitate to let me know. Regards, McChizzle (talk) 01:06, 21 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

SGT141, I discovered another image of the Marine Combat Aircrew Badge that has the wrong combat stars on the Badges of the United States Navy page. It looks like you are the one who last modified this image. Since I lack permission to update it, would you mind corrected this graphic as you did with the others? Thank you, in advance, for your help. Respectfully, McChizzle (talk) 23:10, 27 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the help SGT141! The new badge looks great. --McChizzle (talk) 21:55, 28 June 2011 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Thank you for contributing to Wikipedia. We always appreciate when users upload new images. However, it appears that one or more of the images you have recently uploaded or added to an article may fail our non-free image policy. Most often, this involves editors uploading or using a copyrighted image of a living person. For other possible reasons, please read up on our Non-free image criteria. Please note that we take very seriously our criteria on non-free image uploads and users who repeatedly upload or misuse non-free images may be blocked from editing. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. ΔT The only constant 13:53, 4 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Religious symbolism in the United States military

[edit]

Hi, SGT141, I reverted the edit you made on the page, where you deleted the old U.S. Army Jewish Chaplain/Chapel flag that showed the Roman Numerals instead of the Hebrew letters - and hope you'll keep the reverted (original) version. You said you deleted it because there were "too many" flags -- but showing the changes in the various flags of the various service chaplaincies has been the challenge of this article, and a large part of its purpose.... I know we can delete info or images that are incorrect or poorly sourced, but this fits into the article, I think. I very much hope you will agree. It certainly has taken me a good amount of time to track some of these images down, and I think every one of them helps paint the picture of the changes that have occurred over the years. (Today, I finally received and uploaded the USAF Chaplain Corps flag.) By the way, on a separate subject, did you read the new section on female military personnel who had to wear the head-to-toe abaya off-base in Saudi Arabia until that policy was changed -- and are now encouraged to wear the hijab/headscarf in Afghanistan? I ended up exchanging a number of emails with Col McSally (now retired and teaching at the Marshall Center in Germany), who (as a LtCol) sued the AF over this policy. Very interesting issue, I think! Hammersoft is giving you some bad advice. A football helmet itself is not copyrighted, but paint schemes can be. The logo on the helmet can be either copyrighted or not. In short, if you want to make a helmet and put a non-copyrighted logo on it, that will not effectively make a copyrighted item.

You are welcome to use any of the college football logos I have collected on User:Buffs/FBS Trademarked logos. Buffs (talk) 17:25, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Please note that "helmets" in the above description means actual helmets, not drawings. You would have to use a free drawing, not a copyrighted one to make an illustration. Buffs (talk) 17:44, 25 August 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Orphaned non-free image File:Ernesto Rascon.png

[edit]
⚠

Thanks for uploading File:Ernesto Rascon.png. The image description page currently specifies that the image is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, the image is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the image was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that images for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

PLEASE NOTE:

  • I am a bot, and will therefore not be able to answer your questions. If you have a question, place a {{helpme}} template, along with your question, beneath this message.
  • I will remove the request for deletion if the file is used in an article once again.

Replaceable fair use File:Liberty Flames Football.png

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:Liberty Flames Football.png. I noticed the description page specifies that the media is being used under a claim of fair use, but its use in Wikipedia articles fails our first non-free content criterion in that it illustrates a subject for which a freely licensed media could reasonably be found or created that provides substantially the same information or which could be adequately covered with text alone.

Thank you. Mtking (edits) 06:27, 4 January 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Disputed non-free use rationale for File:KS - Highway Patrol Troop Map.png

[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:KS - Highway Patrol Troop Map.png. However, there is a concern that the rationale provided for using this file on Wikipedia may not meet the criteria required by Wikipedia:Non-free content. This can be corrected by going to the file description page and adding or clarifying the reason why the file qualifies under this policy. Adding and completing one of the templates available from Wikipedia:Non-free use rationale guideline is an easy way to ensure that your file is in compliance with Wikipedia policy. Please be aware that a non-free use rationale is not the same as an image copyright tag; descriptions for files used under the non-free content policy require both a copyright tag and a non-free use rationale.

If it is determined that the file does not qualify under the non-free content policy, it might be deleted by an administrator within a few days in accordance with our criteria for speedy deletion. If you have any questions, please ask them at the media copyright questions page. Thank you. Dpmuk (talk) 19:45, 12 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks a lot for sorting that. I've got quite a lot on my plate at the moment and although I could have sorted a replacement I'm not very quick working with images as I don't do it very often. Dpmuk (talk) 02:12, 15 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]

CBP GS-12 image

[edit]

Good day sir. I saw your page and is very interesting.

As a current U.S. Customs and Border Protection Officer I edited a few things in our Agancy page. I was very disappointed to see the GS-12 rank image edited to a cartoon looking image posted by you.

Did you seriously think that the image you posted looks better than the one copied and pasted form OUR Agency's official uniform website? Well, it does not! — Preceding unsigned comment added by 216.81.94.77 (talk) 13:40, 13 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Capitalization question: Marines

[edit]

SGT141, I know you're in law enforcement, but have great respect for the military. I thought you would like to know that I am trying to get the wikipedia Manual of Style changed to require capitalization of the word "Marine," as the USMC requests--and as more and more manuals of style dictate (including the AP, and as of 2009, the NY Times). Here's the discussion, in case you would like to offer an opinion: Wikipedia_talk:Manual_of_Style/Capital_letters#Military_terms:_Marines. Orphaned non-free media (File:CA - San Bernadino Sheriff.jpg)

[edit]

Thanks for uploading File:CA - San Bernadino Sheriff.jpg.

MLB retired number images

[edit]

Please stop replacing the team-specific, and free use, Jackie Robinson retired number images with the fair-use Jackie Robinson Day logo. It accomplished nothing (it is in fact a detriment because you are removing information) and is in violation of copyright law with regards to fair use. Thanks. — KV5Talk01:18, 11 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]
