DYK for Letterpress (video game)
[edit]On 15 January 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Letterpress (video game), which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that while developing the sound effects for Letterpress, Loren Brichter spit in his microphone? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Letterpress (video game). You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Letterpress (video game)), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.

Hey! I've noticed you closed the nomination above, but it doesn't seem to be closed for a valid reason. The review was started on 20 December and you posted a single suggestion on 1 January. Then on 23 January, it was suddenly closed as fail for the nominator being inactive for 7 days. But you barely even had started reviewing the article yet. The nominator wasn't even pinged or anything. These closes should only happen when the nomination is put on hold (so after the review is done) and the nominator fails to respond in a timely manner, but they had nothing to respond to begin with. I believe this close should be clarified. Skyshiftertalk 04:30, 23 January 2024 (UTC)

- The point isn't to ping the nominator, but rather the reason the review was failed for, as I explained above. It is invalid to close a nomination for the nominator being inactive when you haven't even finished your review. If you just wanted to stop reviewing, you could've stated so instead. Hi, and thanks for participating in this backlog drive! Just wanted to let you know that the review page is for editors to review references added by other editors. As in, a reviewer will randomly select an edit from a random editor to review, rather than you posting your edit there. The reviewed edits will then go under the reviewer's section. I've reviewed the 4 edits you posted there as an example. Feel free to ping me if you have any questions. Thanks! ARandomName123 (talk)Ping me! 02:32, 1 February 2024 (UTC)

- AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), with one FA on Hö'elün, two GAs on Mongolia-related articles, and two DYKs;
- Vami_IV (submissions), with one FA on Doom (2016 video game), one GA on Boundary Fire (2017), and 11 reviews;
- MaranoFan (submissions), with one FA on Holidays (Meghan Trainor song), a nine-article FT on 30 (album), and two DYKs;

As a reminder, competitors may submit work for the first round until 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February, and the second round starts 1 March. Remember that only the top 64 scoring competitors will make it through to the second round; currently, competitors need at least 15 points to progress. If you are concerned that your nomination will not receive the necessary reviews, and you hope to get it promoted before the end of the round, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews. However, please remember to continue to offer reviews at GAN, FAC and all the other pages that require them to prevent any backlogs which could otherwise be caused by the Cup. - TrademarkedTWOrantula, I wanted to emphasize my sorrow at screwing you out of the point you deservedly earned for adding a source to the article. I PROD'd the thing with the idea that by the time the PROD expired, the month would be over and you'd have that point. Sadly, someone reverted my PROD so I had to defend my honor in that regard. I had reviewed your citation so hopefully you will be recompensated although the entry may drop from your log before then. Chris Troutman (talk) 23:29, 24 February 2024 (UTC)

WikiCup 2024 March newsletter
[edit]The first round of the 2024 WikiCup ended at 23:59 (UTC) on 27 February. Everyone with at least 30 points moved on to Round 2, the highest number of points required to advance to the second round since 2014. Due to a six-way tie for the 64th-place spot, 67 contestants have qualified for Round 2.
The following scorers in Round 1 all scored more than 300 points:
- Generalissima (submissions), who has 916 points mostly from one FA on John Littlejohn (preacher), 15 GAs, and 16 DYKs on a variety of topics including New Zealand coinage and Inuit figures, in addition to seven reviews
- Vami_IV (submissions), who has 790 points from two FAs on Felix M. Warburg House and Doom (2016 video game), two GAs, one DYK, and 11 reviews
- AirshipJungleman29 (submissions), who has 580 points from one FA on Hö'elün, two GAs on Mongolia-related articles, two DYKs, and five reviews
- Sammi Brie (submissions), who has 420 points mostly from nine GAs and seven DYKs on television and radio stations
- MaranoFan (submissions), who has 351 points from one FA on Holidays (Meghan Trainor song), a nine-article FT on 30 (album), and three DYKs
- Skyshifter (submissions), who has 345 points from one FA on OneShot, one DYK and two reviews
In this newsletter, the judges would like to pay a special tribute to Vami_IV (submissions), who unfortunately passed away this February. At the time of his death, he was the second-highest-scoring competitor. Outside the WikiCup, he had eight other featured articles, five A-class articles, eight other good articles, and two Four Awards. Vami also wrote an essay on completionism, a philosophy in which he deeply believed. If you can, please join us in honoring his memory by improving one of the articles on his to-do list.
Remember that any content promoted after 27 February but before the start of Round 2 can be claimed in Round 2. Invitations for collaborative writing efforts or any other discussion of potentially interesting work is always welcome on the WikiCup talk page. Remember, if two or more WikiCup competitors have done significant work on an article, all can claim points. If you are concerned that your nomination—whether it is at good article candidates, a featured process, or anywhere else—will not receive the necessary reviews, please list it on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. If you want to help out with the WikiCup, feel free to review one of the nominations listed on Wikipedia:WikiCup/Reviews Needed. Questions are welcome on Wikipedia talk:WikiCup, and the judges are reachable on their talk pages. Good luck! [edit]I am going to enforce a Wikibreak, as I am about to graduate from school. My grades are (unfortunately) a little low, so I have to temporarily leave Wikipedia. Why don't you try finishing or improving one of my written articles? See y'all in about a month. Peace, TWOrantulaTM (enter the web) 05:24, 6 May 2024 (UTC)

Sorry about that
[edit]Hello TWOrantula,
Sorry, didn't mean to scare you off FAC reviewing! I couldn't sleep last night and was probably in a grumpy mood, so apologies if that came off as harsher than intended. More FAC reviewers is generally a good thing.
That said, my comment wasn't totally off-base. My suggestion is that if you're commenting on prose, make clear the difference between "suggestions" /"thoughts" and "this is genuinely a problem, please fix it, I will probably oppose if you ignore this." You were using commanding language like "Change" as an order, so it's going to come off as the latter by default. If what you meant was more like "Here are some alternate ways to phrase things to think about, it's up to you", then there'd have been no problem. If that's what you were thinking, I definitely recommend including a disclaimer at the top of future reviews saying that, and then making clear passages that you really think are a problem. For an example, I made such a disclaimer at my review at Talk:Sands of Destruction/GA1, and made various suggestions in my review, many of which were changed or sometimes ignored by the nominator. And it was fine! I passed it anyway. They were just suggestions, after all.
But yeah. One of the things about FAC is that it's a pretty high-stress environment for nominators. There's often times 20 different ways to phrase the same thought, all valid, and there's nothing more soul-killing than reviewers basically distrusting the nominator's own judgment & personal preference and asking it to be changed from style 4 to style 8 to style 17 and back, despite none of them really being an improvement. That's the high-minded reason to be careful with prose suggestions.
I wish you good luck reviewing in the future! SnowFire (talk) 17:18, 29 June 2024 (UTC)

Drafts for Deletion
[edit]You have nominated two drafts for deletion. What I would like to know is whether you were reviewing drafts as a New Page Patrol reviewer, as an Articles for Creation reviewer, or in some other way. Drafts are not deleted for lack of notability. Drafts that are submitted are declined for lack of notability. Nominating drafts for deletion because of a lack of notability wastes the time of the nominator and the MFD reviewers. So what I would like to know is how to minimize the number of these well-intentioned but misguided nominations of drafts for deletion for notability. What sort of review were you doing? I am wondering whether we can provide clearer instructions about how to review and not review drafts. Robert McClenon (talk) 20:48, 5 August 2024 (UTC)
- After deleting the draft page "Object show" (found here), I figured that the two pages (which I had happened to come across) happened to cover a subject that is banned from Wikipedia. I thought that these pages needed to be deleted immediately, so I said that they "weren't notable". TWOrantulaTM (enter the web) 21:00, 5 August 2024 (UTC)
DYK for Clustertruck
[edit]On 8 August 2024, Did you know was updated with a fact from the article Clustertruck, which you recently created, substantially expanded, or brought to good article status. The fact was ... that the idea for Clustertruck came from a developer wanting to escape traffic? The nomination discussion and review may be seen at Template:Did you know nominations/Clustertruck. You are welcome to check how many pageviews the nominated article or articles got while on the front page (here's how, Clustertruck), and the hook may be added to the statistics page after its run on the Main Page has completed. Finally, if you know of an interesting fact from another recently created article, then please feel free to suggest it on the Did you know talk page.
