Photographs

[edit]

Welcome! Thanks for uploading those pictures for Curtin, Jamieson, Unity, and Imbler. They look great! There's a list of Oregon-related articles that need photos here, and divided up by region. Whenever you add a photo, don't forget to remove the "reqphoto" on the article's talk page if it's there; that way it will be removed from the category. I hope you take more pictures!

You are invited to join WikiProject Oregon, a WikiProject dedicated to improving articles related to the U.S. state of Oregon .

You received this invitation because of your history editing Oregon articles or discussion of Oregon topics. The Oregon WikiProject group discussion is here.

You may want to consider using the Article Wizard to help you create articles.

A tag has been placed on Mount Calvary Cemetery portland requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section A3 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an article with no content whatsoever, or whose contents consist only of external links, a "See also" section, book references, category tags, template tags, interwiki links, a rephrasing of the title, or an attempt to contact the subject of the article. Please see Wikipedia:Stub for our minimum information standards for short articles. Also please note that articles must be on notable subjects and should provide references to reliable sources that verify their content.

If you think that this notice was placed here in error, contest the deletion by clicking on the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". Doing so will take you to the talk page where you will find a pre-formatted place for you to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. You can also visit the the page's talk page directly to give your reasons, but be aware that once tagged for speedy deletion, if the page meets the criterion, it may be deleted without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag yourself, but don't hesitate to add information to the page that would render it more in conformance with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. If the page is deleted, you can contact one of these administrators to request that the administrator userfy the page or email a copy to you. Moogwrench (talk) 20:19, 21 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Tip

[edit]

When you upload photos for articles in need of them, please be sure to remove the |reqphoto=… in the {{WikiProject Oregon}} template on the talk page. Also, you don't need to add the photos to the talk page. It's better to add them directly in the article. That way we can be sure readers will see them. Thanks! Jsayre64 (talk) 03:39, 22 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Also, you don't need to sign the talk page when removing the reqphoto= tag. Remove the tag and make the edit summary something like reqphoto fulfilled. In particular, you should not sign the talk page when you don't add a comment. —EncMstr (talk) 22:39, 22 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for all you do!

You were mentioned at wikiproject Oregon, so i went to your userpage and saw some of your photos. Awesome opossum. Keep it up. - Peregrine Fisher (talk) 05:23, 26 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Indeed. One of the things the project really needed was somebody who had the capacity to mass-upload self-taken photos. I'm sorry if I keep bugging you about little things, but a good way to make sure the image(s) you add to an article will be seen by the reader is if you place the image in the infobox, unless there already is one there. Just omit the "File:" prefix, fill in the size as 250px, and add the caption in the line below that.
If there already is an image in the infobox, just add the one you took somewhere where readers will likely see it. Thanks again! Jsayre64 (talk) 03:28, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

From a fellow WikiProject Oregon member, keep up the great work! I love seeing images added to articles. --Another Believer (Talk) 15:21, 27 September 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Userspace drafts

[edit]

I'm not so sure about having an article for that K-8 school in Bethel. (Nice picture, though! ) I doubt the school meets Wikipedia notability guidelines. Your other articles-in-progress probably make the cut, but be careful with spelling. For the unincorporated community, if the USGS has it in its geographic names database—which also provides the coordinates of the place, which you can add to the article—there's no need to worry about notability. I'm glad you're interested in starting articles! WikiProject Oregon has a list of articles to create here, by the way. Maybe sometime soon I'll be able to write another from that list myself. Jsayre64 (talk) 04:27, 2 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the good information. The Prairie Mountain School is outta here. On the redlinks list, I might do better adding a photo when someone else writes the article but will keep an eye on the list just in case.Visitor7 (talk) 06:51, 2 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

The article Foto Hut (photography chain) has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The company fails WP:CORP, and WP:GNG

While all contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. State traveler

[edit]

I think you beat me fair and square on the state-traveler photo contest. If only I hadn't photographed the Sioux County Courthouse on an earlier trip... (Gnashes teeth). Beside, reading the description page at Commons for the Wheeler Ridge site makes it sound as though you should get extra points for battling the wilderness. Congrat'ns, and keep up the good work. And just wait till next year... Ammodramus (talk) 01:23, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry that you've been getting chewed out by brother editors. If you're having trouble with the categorization business and think I might be able to help, please feel free to drop me a line at my talk page, and I'll offer what advice I can.
Read your Commons talk page to see how badly you'd been scolded, and see that your upbraider refers to photos in Tacoma. Is there any chance that at some point in the future, you'd find yourself in the Museum of Flight in Seattle? If so, may I put in an earnest request for a shot of the red Curtiss-Robertson Robin C-1 (here's their webpage on it)? I'd really like a photo of it to illustrate the article on the McCook Daily Gazette, which used what's now the museum's airplane to drop bundles of newspapers to local deliverers in small Nebraska and Kansas towns in the 1920s, thus becoming the first newspaper to do regular delivery by air. In case you're ever up there with your camera... Ammodramus (talk) 04:07, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
Funny you should mention it. We were just discussing another trip to the Puget Sound area. I will try to have your photos within a week or two. The image of a guy walking outside in his bathrobe to pick up the morning paper as it's tossed from an airplane... Visitor7 (talk) 08:04, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]
In a well-meaning but clumsy attempt to help a friend who had a paper route, I once made hay of a customer's Halloween display with an inaccurately-slung Sunday paper. Air power would've greatly increased my ability to do damage; I could have scattered shards of pumpkin over the entire block and driven them an inch deep into the front door... Regrettably, the Gazette didn't do house-by-house delivery by airdrop; they dropped bundles into prearranged fields, where the local carriers picked them up. But one can imagine...
If you reply to one of my messages, could you please do so at my talk page? Ordinarily, I don't watch talk pages on which I've left messages; luckily, I forgot to uncheck the "Watch this page" box when I left my last message, so was aware that you'd responded. Ammodramus (talk) 13:34, 6 December 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Curtiss Robin C1 Photos

[edit]

Thanks for the excellent photos. I've placed one of them in the McCook Daily Gazette article.

The storyboards are interesting—I hadn't known about the car-giveaway promotion—but I'd be cautious about uploading photos of things like that, because I'm not sure if the text or images on them is covered by copyright.

I greatly appreciate your getting the photos. One thing that I haven't found on WP is a way to contact local photographers with requests for specific pictures. I've put a note up at WP:WikiProject Nebraska indicating that I'd be willing to try and photograph specific sites in the state; but it'd be a good thing if WP had a more organized way for editors seeking photos to get in touch with photographers who might be willing and able to take them. Hi, i found my way to your draft User:Visitor7/First Presbyterian Church of Roseburg, which you started a year ago. Currently First Presbyterian Church of Roseburg is a redlink. I wonder if it could be moved to mainspace and developed? As a NRHP-listed place, it is certainly notable. An NRHP nomination document is available at http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NRHP/Text/88001162.pdf and accompanying photos (both pre- and post-1959 explosion) are available at http://pdfhost.focus.nps.gov/docs/NRHP/Photos/88001162.pdf. I'd be happy to move it and develop it by adding that as a reference and more, or help if you chose to, if you reply. Either way about replying, I'm happy to see you seem to be making many contributions. cheers, --doncram 16:28, 5 November 2012 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

Hi Visitor7. I love your photos. So many!!! I see you do a few videos. If you happen to find one of those machines that take a car tire off the rim (Tire changer), I've always wanted to see a video of that, and the article could use it. Best wishes, and thanks again for your wonderful contributions. Anna Frodesiak (talk) 05:32, 18 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks Anna. I am inspired to do better just looking at your amazing work. On the tire changer, I had a blowout on a Los Angeles freeway last month and DIDN'T video the guy fixing the tire because I thought no one would want to see it... But now I can go see my friend at the shop and make a video. RichardVisitor7 (talk) 03:11, 19 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Here are three videos I shot today on my cell phone. The quality is very bad on the tire changer and the wheel grinder because of where I was standing in relation to the ambient light, plus the cell phone camera lens is old and broken (like me), but here they are:
A tire changer at a tire shop
A wheel corrosion grinder at a tire shop
A tire balancer at a tire shop

Visitor7 (talk) 00:29, 24 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well, I think my photos are rubbish. Someone gave me coupons to buy a camera, so it would be rude to replace it right now. But the subjects are alright, I guess.
The tire changer, yes, visitors would like that. I hope you can get that video.
I'm thinking of posting this somewhere. Please tell me what you think:
I saw little wood carvings on rotating pedestals today. They took about 30 seconds to go around. I was thinking about borrowing one for a day and going to main intersections or hubs in the city, putting my camera on it, and filming a 360 view.

Would such videos be suitable in an article or commonscat, or just be disorienting? I'm thinking of articles like, say, a village in Albania, an evening hawker stall area in Thailand, an base in Antarctica, an oil rig wheel house, a university campus somewhere, a sausage factory in Wales, a Saudi Palace, etc. Thoughts?

Anna Frodesiak (talk) 03:50, 19 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
It sounds very creative and fun; I'd like to see some. Maybe the technique should have its own meme where people could contribute 30-sec videos defining their community by the slow-turn of a camera. Visitor7 (talk) 04:08, 19 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
So today I made a modified rotation, a flat-foot pirouette at a farmers market--
The Portland Farmers Market at Portland State University on a slow left turn to the sounds of a Hang
Visitor7 (talk) 02:32, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wholesale fish market at Haikou New Port. (volume warning)
I think it's splendid! At first I thought the rotation speed was too fast, but now I think that your speed is best, and maybe twice around conveys the most to the brain. Too slow and we forget where we were. I'm not sure.
Conversion size/quality issue:
  • My camera creates avi.
  • I use editing software to lower the volume, crop and fade in and out, then export as mp4.
  • I convert the mp4 to ogv with Miro Video Converter.

Your video is 30 seconds and around 7MB. I can do the same via avi --> mp4 --> ogv, but the quality is not like yours. To get almost your quality (as with the fish market video) I do avi --> mpeg2 --> ogv, but it is 1MB per second.

Oh, and at first I thought that was a wok salesman and wondered where the music was coming from. Then I figured it out: steel drum meets wok. Cool. I want one. :)
So yes, I think this could catch on, especially with the "defining their community" idea. Where do we go from here? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 18:33, 21 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Those videos look great! Thank you so much. Please, feel free to add them to the articles. If you don't, may I? Anna Frodesiak (talk) 21:48, 25 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Visitor7. Thanks for improving the Right 2 Dream Too article by adding a photograph. Just in case you are interested, I started this list of buildings at Reed College, many of which do not have images. If you happen to make a trip to Reed in the future, assistance with photographs would be much appreciated! As always, keep up the great work. --Another Believer (Talk) 14:48, 25 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like a fun project. I will try to get something the first week in August. Visitor7 (talk) 03:58, 28 July 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wow! Thank you so much for your contributions to the project. Your photographs are great, and they vastly improve the list. I did some categorization of the images at Commons. Again, thank you! --Another Believer (Talk) 14:57, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You're very welcome. The sun made a blinding splash on every photo, but it was a good day. I even got to snap some pro bono wedding reception pictures on campus.Visitor7 (talk) 21:00, 5 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the continuing stream of photos. I was happy to see the one for Lakeside today, and it reminded me of others you've done, particularly in Ashland, and the one of the North Portland Library. Finetooth (talk) 20:37, 12 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, we drove down to Bandon to try out the new cheese creamery and got some photos along the way. Rumors are that the North Portland Library has reopened the second floor area which has another great ceiling in need of a picture. I'm going to try to get over there again soon. Wikipedia Takes Portland 2013!

[edit]
WIKIPEDIA TAKES PORTLAND 2013!
You're invited to participate in the upcoming "Wikipedia Takes Portland" campaign, to be held during the month of September. The local campaign occurs annually in conjunction with Wikipedia Takes America and Wiki Loves Monuments in the United States. Photographing sites included on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) is the main focus of Wikipedia Takes Portland. In typical Wikipedia fashion, you can work individually or create a team.
Details and signup here!

Visitor7, a campaign like this might be just up your alley! I hope you are able to contribute. --Another Believer (Talk) 15:19, 26 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Photo request tags

[edit]

Hello. Thank you for adding a photgraph to Carlsbad Poinsettia (NCTD station). When you add photos, it's a good idea to check the talk page for a {{reqphoto}} tag or a WikiProject box attribute like imageneeded. Otherwise the article stays on the task list for other local photographers. Cheers, Bovlb (talk) 17:41, 31 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You're welcome. You have some nice photos of that site also. I thought I already removed the photo request. Visitor7 (talk) 23:31, 31 August 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nice work!

[edit]

I keep seeing your photos of general stores and such popping up on the little small town articles I've started, which is so awesome, thanks! A photo really makes a difference, especially when the other info on a place is scant. Also loved seeing you make this: Mount Emily Lumber Company. Our coverage of defunct but historic Oregon lumber companies is always in need of improvement. Cheers! Valfontis (talk) 23:38, 4 September 2013 (UTC) P.S. Did you go to Starkey?[reply]

Thanks for starting so many articles about these little places; finding their locations is a treasure hunt. Starkey was on the list, but it was getting late so we decided to return another time. Speaking of our historic lumber companies, we don't seem to have an article on the Hull-Oakes Lumber Co. in Dawson. I snapped a few photos there a couple weeks ago but haven't gotten around to researching the history. The owners may have some historic photos to donate. Visitor7 (talk) 03:06, 5 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

👍 Like. I am obsessed with your photographs! Thanks for uploading images for Wiki Takes Portland. --Another Believer (Talk) 16:25, 5 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you AB. SW Portland is almost done. I can't find the Baruh-Zell House, however, and it's easy to get lost up there. Lake Oswego is done except for the Sherrard-Fenton House which somehow didn't get on my list. Here is a link to an article and video about access to Oswego Lake: http://www.wweek.com/portland/article-18897-lake_affront.html If someone had a kayak they could search for a better shot of the Carl Jantzen Estate. Visitor7 (talk) 05:44, 6 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Love your pictures of Rocky Butte -- thanks for sharing! Also, one quick FYI, just in case this makes the uploading process a bit easier for you. Pages like National Register of Historic Places listings in Southwest Portland, Oregon contain little "Upload images" links in the image column. If you click on the link, you can upload images of that site and it will automatically add the "Wiki Loves Monuments" template, NRHP ID numbers and other relevant categories to your images. Again, not a requirement, but it might make uploading and categorizing easier. I sound like a broken record telling you to "keep up the great work," so just know that your contributions are truly appreciated. --Another Believer (Talk) 17:28, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the suggestion on the upload link; it does make things much easier. Much as I would like to be up to date on things, I guess I'm just stuck back in the 20th century. Visitor7 (talk) 18:26, 12 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia edit-athon at Portland Art Museum

[edit]
WIKI LOVES LIBRARIES 2013!
You're invited to attend the upcoming "Wiki Loves Libraries" edit-athon. The event will be held from 1–4pm on Sunday, October 13, 2013 at the Portland Art Museum's Crumpacker Family Library, located on the second floor of the Museum's Mark Building (formerly the Masonic Temple).
The edit-athon will focus on the local arts community (but you can work on other topics as well!). It will also kick off the Oregon Arts Project, an on-wiki initiative to improve coverage of the arts in Oregon. Details and signup here!

If you prefer photography to article development, you can always photograph around the library/museum/South Park Blocks area and come do some image uploading at Commons on site. Please consider attending! --Another Believer (Talk) 04:14, 13 September 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Re: List of University of Oregon Buildings

[edit]

Yikes! The campus of the University of Oregon page is a mess. I think "campus" articles should be more prose-oriented, providing information about its history, expansion, designers, architects, major changes, etc. From that article, a List of University of Oregon buildings would also be beneficial. This would be a table much like List of Reed College buildings. Just my two cents. --Another Believer (Talk) 15:15, 4 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Visitor7, if you ever have ideas for photos drives or article creation blitzes, just let me know! We discussed NRHP sites at the recent meetup, but really the options are limitless. We could do a Wiki Loves PSU, or Wiki Loves Reed College, or Wiki Takes PDX Food Carts, etc. Any themed photo hunt or article edit-athon is an opportunity to spark collaboration between WP Oregon members, or outreach to new contributors. Feel free to shoot me an e-mail (which can be found on my profile page) with any thoughts or ideas. As we have seen lately, these photo hunts can be very productive, even with only a couple participants! --Another Believer (Talk) 00:07, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]

A cup of coffee for you!

Hello, I am from Seattle but living in NYC these days. Thanks for your photography work - you bring a lot to Wikipedia. If I can ever collaborate with you on something then message me. Nothing comes to my mind, but I do like to say hello to people from my region. Cheers! Blue Rasberry (talk) 21:15, 22 November 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the coffee! An ongoing project I have been interested in is photographing lunch counters. New York had so many lunch counters, and they had these photogenic, ten-gallon coffee urns behind the counter. Another subject I never tire of is coffee roasters. If you drop by a small-batch roaster, they might let you photograph the machine. (I just found a Vittoria last week). NYC roasters probably have a Gothat or a Royal in the back room. Lunch counters and coffee roasters (coffee roasting) have their own categories on commons. I would be up for a more well-defined project when it presents itself. Merry Christmas

[edit]

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year on this foggy Christmas Eve. Finetooth (talk) 00:55, 25 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Nice job creating a long-needed article on Feig. Just FYI, I noticed you used the Ritz book as a reference. Per Mr. Teague, with whom I chatted a bit about my woefully inadequate Edgar M. Lazarus article, the book is pretty inaccurate as it was unfinished at Ritz's death. It's still a useful book but caution and multiple sources are advised. Not that there's anything wrong with your refs, I didn't fact check :) , but just a heads up. Cheers, Valfontis (talk) 23:30, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

P.S. Turns out I lived in a Feig! For a few months over 20 years ago in the Kurdy Apartments. I had no idea. Valfontis (talk) 23:33, 13 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I worked on the Elmer Feig article a bit today and was able to sketch out a little more of his time in Florida, and I looked up the references in the Ritz book and added them where it improved the article. Thanks for the words of caution. Not much is known yet about the Kurdy Apartments. The building looks like an example of mid-Feig or restrained Feig. Visitor7 (talk) 05:08, 15 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, nothing really exciting about the Kurdy inside or out if I recall. Cheap and near NW was the big draw. Valfontis (talk) 22:13, 15 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Proposed deletion of List of Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission Zone Six Prohibited-Commercial Fishing Access Sites

The article List of Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission Zone Six Prohibited-Commercial Fishing Access Sites has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The Columbia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission may be notable. The list of fishing access sites though...

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, content or articles may be deleted for any of several reasons.

Notice

The article Flagg, Oregon has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

Non-notable rail siding, not a community. First appears on 1957 USGS topo map clearly showing a siding with no human structures: [4]. False article; location fails WP:GEOLAND. Sources cited insufficient for notability.

While all constructive contributions to Wikipedia are appreciated, pages may be deleted for any of several reasons.

You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{proposed deletion/dated}} notice, but please explain why in your edit summary or on the article's talk page.

Please consider improving the page to address the issues raised. Removing {{proposed deletion/dated}} will stop the proposed deletion process, but other deletion processes exist. In particular, the speedy deletion process can result in deletion without discussion, and articles for deletion allows discussion to reach consensus for deletion. Notice

The article Indiola, Oregon has been proposed for deletion because of the following concern:

The place exists, but apart from GNIS, sites that regurgitate GNIS data, and sites that mirror WP, I could find no information about Indiola. There was once a Camp Indiola: [5], but it's not clear the camp and the community were the same thing. With so little information available, there isn't much we can say other than GNIS has a dot on the map at these coordinates named Indiola. Fails WP:GEOLAND and WP:GNG.
