I am allowed to reach out to people who are affiliated with the topic I am writing about?[edit]

Am I allowed to reach out to the people who are affiliated with a topic I am writing about for more sources and information? The topic is a piece of video media from the 1990's. The cast had a lot of subcultural notability in the 80's/90's and were features in subculture magazines (skateboarding in particular) so I'm wondering if they know where to get more sources about the video they were in. No offense to them but I don't think any of the cast members or anybody else involved would meet the qualifications for notability in the present nor would have in the past honestly. (I'd be seeking them out through social media.) WindowColorCenter (talk) 03:38, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

No. Wikipedia acts as a repository for verifiable sources. Social media accounts are not reliable or particularly reliable. Wrosh (talk) 03:47, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Wrosh of course, it's true we don't use posts on social media as sources, as they are not reliable sources. Here we have @WindowColorCenter asking if it's okay to "reach out" to someone, asking if that person can point to a reliable source. That seems okay to me — unless you can point me to a policy that suggests otherwise? MatthewDalhousie (talk) 03:57, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Wrosh: That's mostly true. Social media accounts can be used for some things, but their scope of use is very limited, and they'd be considered primary sources, which won't help in establishing a subject's wikinotability. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 14:15, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Wrosh, thank you. I studied up on the practicalities of sources before I'd started writing and knew to refrain from using them as sources as well as blogs as those as primary sources, from what I'd understood could not be used no problem and in any case thank you for the reminder. @MatthewDalhousie is right is what I had been asking about with the article. More clearly I had been meaning to say if it was alright to reach out to people who had been involved with the media on their own social media accounts which is how I would attempt to reach them and ask them for any sources they have. Thank you both! I'm glad I am able to reach out to others to ask as part of the research I am attempting to do. WindowColorCenter (talk) 20:12, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hello, WindowColorCenter, and welcome to the Teahouse. Certainly you can reach out to people involved and ask if they can point you to reliable independent sources|, as MatthewDalhousie says. Wrosh and Tenryuu seem to be answering a different question from the one you asked. ColinFine (talk) 16:31, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi im new here. Just a question on how to edit.[edit]

How do I add a subpage? STARTERuser (talk) 06:06, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@STARTERuser: Subpages are not used in article space, and Wikipedia is not the place to publish pages about yourself and your personal interests, it's the place to help build and improve the encyclopedia. Fabrickator (talk) 08:39, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Ok Thank you. STARTERuser (talk) 08:50, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@STARTERuser@FabrickatorWell yeah, but many users have subpages in their use space for things like award and stuff. If you wanted to do that, just go to User:STARTERUser/Something and it will tell you to make that page. Just make sure it follows the rules. (Fabricator and other hosts, feel free to strike this out if it’s wrong.) GoldRomean (talk) 11:27, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia:Subpages might be helpful. '''[[User:CanonNi]]''' (talkcontribs) 11:34, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@GoldRomean@CanonNi Certainly your observations are accurate, but given the context, I suspect that my comment is more appropriate. Fabrickator (talk) 14:30, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Fabrickator Well, I wouldn't say that, since the user has created this, in addition to a few other subpages in their userspace. GoldRomean (talk) 16:17, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@GoldRomean The things that were added happened after I made my comment. While he's made himself a "wall" for awards, there's nothing on those pages to suggest that he's here to improve the encyclopedia. Fabrickator (talk) 18:21, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Fabrickator Fair; so far they haven't edited a single mainspace article yet. And that's probably more important that working on user subpages. I just don't think it's necessarily correct to discourage new users from making subpages. Well anyway, I feel like the question's been answered, as the user knows how to make subpages now, and this conversation is veering toward an unnecessary argument, so I believe it's wise for us to end this and for me to politely withdraw myself from this conversation. It was good meeting you. See you around! Cheers, GoldRomean (talk) 20:39, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

How do I link references to my draft, Jepmidiyel? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Zion KDP A.K.A La Miship (talkcontribs) 13:13, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Shantavira: Please read WP:WTF.[Humor]

If you use abbreviations all the time, you risk forgetting what the expansion actually is, and might say something you don't actually mean: e.g., you refer to WP:FORK, meaning the short version of WP:CONTENTFORK – but it links to WP:Mirrors and forks.

new user page translation[edit]

I am a new user and I want to translate a Japanese page to English, but Wikipedia does not permit me to do so, what should I do? Maryam.mgs (talk) 13:17, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello @Maryam.mgs, welcome to the Teahouse. Anyone can translate articles from other language Wikipedias to English, as long as they follow the guidelines for content attribution. There is a page that provides information on this: Help:Translation. Since you are a new user and do not have many edits, the specific use of the Content Translation Tool is not allowed until you have 500 edits and have been a member for 1 month. Reconrabbit 14:13, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Maryam.mgs, The short answer is: translate it yourself, as long as it is on Japanese Wikipedia, and forget about the Content Translation Tool. I was going to suggest you start by creating a sandbox page, User:Maryam.mgs/sandbox, but it looks like you have already started an article there about "Kyoichi Tanaka", and then I noticed you also created Draft:Kyoichi Tanaka as well. I assume that is the topic you wish to translate?
I found a Japanese article at ja:田中恭一 about a Japanese businessman involved with a contact lens company, so I assume that is the article you are translating. If so, you can keep on translating it, just be aware that Wikipedia's Terms of use requires that all translations from other Wikipedias be attributed by a statement in the edit summary; see WP:TFOLWP for how to word this. Looking at the history of the Draft, it looks like there is a brief attribution statement on the initial edit which probably suffices, so you can just carry on translating. Mathglot (talk) 03:49, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks @Mathglot
Yes, That's true. I want to write a page about Kyoichi Tanaka.
So now, I am translating directly. but I want the page to be shown as the second language of the japanese page. Now, in my edit, in the language part, it shows only one language and it is considered as independent page. How can I link the japanese and the english pages. Maryam.mgs (talk) 08:14, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
The pages are linked through Wikidata. Once the English page is published (no longer a draft), it will be possible to add it to the list of Wikipedia entries on this page: wikidata:Q11575551. MOst of the time this is done by people patrolling new pages or bots so it is not usually something you have to worry about. Reconrabbit 13:27, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks @Reconrabbit for the explanation.
Even if the english version of the page is not exactly the same as the japanese version (more detailed than the japanese version)?
Thank you Maryam.mgs (talk) 14:10, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
That is correct. It would be impossible for every article to be the same across different languages anyway, since it is discouraged to use machine translation. Also, different sources may be used in different languages. As an example, the English article on Narita Brian is a stub, and it uses the Los Angeles Times as a source. The Japanese article does not use this source, and it is a much longer Featured Article. Reconrabbit 14:29, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for the info. It is useful Maryam.mgs (talk) 08:09, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Maryam.mgs, I have made a number of improvements to your Draft, tagged some issues inline, and started a Talk page to go into further detail. Much remains to be done, and at this point, I think that discussion of improvements to your Draft and further questions should move to the Draft talk page. Feel free to respond to the existing discussion there, or start new discussion sections with new questions. Thanks, Mathglot (talk) 18:04, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Editing my company's Wikipedia page[edit]

I work for the company Ontotext, and the Wikipedia page for an Ontotext product https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ontotext_GraphDB has not been edited since a few years before I joined. I understand why Wikipedia doesn't want company employees adding marketing material about their companies to Wikidata, but I would just like to update the dates and release numbers on the page and maybe remove some out-of-date bits. Is that considered kosher for a company employee? Bobdc (talk) 14:05, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi bobdc, I'd suggest making a request on the article's talk page. Instructions for doing so can be found at Wikipedia:Edit requests. -- D'n'B-t -- 14:53, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Thanks, Cullen328 and D'n'B-t! it's good to know that there is a specific procedure to follow. I'm going wait until after the product's next release instead of requesting an update now and then another one in a few weeks. Bobdc (talk) 20:44, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

question about a draft[edit]

I am hoping to get some direction, I was told that it would benefit me greatly if I would create myself an author page and a WIKI page, now I have a draft that was declined by Zingarese, hope I have figured out how to reach out to that particular person but I would love some direction on what I need to change in order to get my page published, I can send my email address if that would be helpful but not on a public forum, thank you! @Zingarese Author Bekka Scott (talk) 19:09, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

You have misunderstood what Wikipedia is, Wikipedia doesn't host "author pages" we have articles on notable people see the relevant criteria at WP:NWRITER. Theroadislong (talk) 19:24, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
WP, however, does host userpage profiles so long as said material relates in some way to users' activity, tenure, and/or goals hereon. Note that userpages cannot be used as ads/promotional tools/spam bait, social profiles, forum threads, or personal web pages; there are other avenues for the likes of those. As for users who have their own official articles, WP:Notable Wikipedians is your go-to. --Slgrandson (How's my egg-throwing coleslaw?) 22:49, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
It also appears that a significant portion (everything but 'early life') was copied from a website with a copyright notice. If the subject is notable (which it doesn't appear based on the two links provided so far), the content will need to be basically entirely rewritten to not be a copy of another website (or any copyrighted source). -bɜ:ʳkənhɪmez (User/say hi!) 19:27, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

(Almost) EVERYTHING IS THE INFOBOX!!!1![edit]

Basically, I am attempting to merge USS Wadsworth (FFG-9) with ORP Generał Tadeusz Kościuszko. I made an edit (https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=ORP_Genera%C5%82_Tadeusz_Ko%C5%9Bciuszko&oldid=1230123249) on the latter article with a lot of the text from the former, with the infobox from the former as well. When I uploaded the edit though, I noticed something weird: The infobox was at the bottom of the page. I decided to open the edited article in the editor and I saw something horrifying: the infobox was somehow containing all the text (not within itself, but rather just as one whole lump, if that makes any sense). I reverted the edit in response to this.

What exactly did I do wrong here? Commanderbuzzard (talk) 20:10, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Did I vandalize a page before or not? Lateruniverse (talk) 21:57, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

My Article Keeps Declined[edit]

Hi,

My article submission for "Rology" was recently declined with feedback stating that it reads more like an advertisement and lacks multiple published sources that are in-depth, reliable, secondary, and strictly independent of the subject. I've made revisions to address these concerns, and I would like some guidance to ensure my article meets Wikipedia's standards.

Here are the changes I've implemented:

  1. Neutral Tone: Revised the language to remove promotional tone and ensure a neutral point of view.
  2. References: Included a wider range of references from independent and reliable sources such as FDA Database, Disrupt Africa, Arab News, MIT Solve, WHO, Forbes, Medical Device Network, and Diagnostic Imaging.
  3. Detailed Information: Added more detailed information about Rology's history, services, impact, and partnerships based on verifiable facts.

Could you please review the revised draft below and provide specific feedback on how to further improve it to meet Wikipedia's guidelines? Your assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

DRAFT

Rology is an FDA-cleared. AI-assisted teleradiology platform founded in 2017, and headquartered in Cairo, Egypt, with offices in Kenya and Saudi Arabia. It aims to address the shortage of radiologists and improve the accessibility and quality of radiological services, particularly in the Middle East and Africa (MEA) region

History and Development

Rology was established to bridge the gap between the demand for radiology services and the limited supply of qualified radiologists. By leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) and a network of subspecialized radiologists, Rology says it provides timely and accurate radiology reports to healthcare providers. In 2023, Rology secured the FDA 510(k) clearance for its teleradiology platform, marking it as the first AI-assisted teleradiology platform to receive such approval, according to Rology's analysis.

Services and Features

Rology's platform facilitates the electronic transmission of medical images such as X-rays, CT scans, and MRIs for interpretation by radiologists worldwide based on their licenses. Key features of the platform include:

  • Automated Workflow: Automatic upload and routing of medical images, reducing the workload on general radiologists and speeding up the diagnostic process.
  • AI Matching: The platform uses AI to match each case with the most suitable available radiologist based on subspecialty and availability.
  • DICOM Viewer: Rology developed a zero-footprint AI-assisted DICOM Viewer and reporting tool to be used by radiologists to interpret the scans.
  • Quality Assurance: The platform incorporates AI-based tools for computer-aided detection, and automated reporting and review, enhancing diagnostic accuracy and reducing turnaround times.

Impact and Reach

Rology said it has served over 150 healthcare providers across 9 countries, and delivered radiology reports for over 657,832 patients till October 2023. The platform benefits underserved areas, with a substantial portion of scans catering to primary care settings and low-income demographics.

Partnerships and Collaborations

Rology has formed strategic partnerships to enhance its offerings and expand its reach. In 2023, it acquired Arkan United, a Saudi-licensed teleradiology provider, and secured an investment from the Philips Foundation to support its mission of democratizing access to healthcare.

Sample: Rology has formed strategic partnerships to enhance its offerings and expand its reach. What, if anything, does this mean? -- Hoary (talk) 23:07, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Mahbarakat2018 So, for example, your reference #10 should be formatted as: Hall, Jeff (4 October 2023). "FDA Clears Emerging AI-Enabled Teleradiology Platform". diagnosticimaging.com. Retrieved 21 June 2024. Note that, like many others you use, it is based on a press release/interview with someone from the company and hence is not independent. That means it cannot help demonstrate that the company is wikinotable. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:40, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
What other sources you find accepted so I can understand the criteria? Mahbarakat2018 (talk) 18:20, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Wikipedia has little interest in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is almost entirely interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. If enough material is cited from independent sources to establish notability, a limited amount of uncontroversial factual information may be added from non-independent sources.
You need to make sure that almost all your sources meet the triple criteria in 42 - in particular, nothing at all which is derived from the company (such as press releases) is of any use. ColinFine (talk) 21:24, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Issues with CCSDS page on Wikipedia[edit]

I'm a long time user of Wikipedia, and contribute financially but not with words (so far). I'm also one of the leaders in the CCSDS organization and have noticed that the Wiki page is incomplete and somewhat biased. The link is Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems. I'd like to fix these issues. What is the best way to proceed? LotsOfStrings (talk) 23:33, 20 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@LotsOfStrings: Welcome to the Teahouse. For one, you must disclose that you have a conflict of interest with the subject in question, preferably on your user page. Second, you should use the article's talk page at Talk:Consultative Committee for Space Data Systems and submit an edit request of what exactly you want to change and a reliable source that backs your proposed change. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 00:36, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for that information. I’ll update my user profile. Since CCSDS is a consensus organization I could even have the governing body “bless” the edits. I assume Wikipedia wants accuracy and that’s how we get it. I also believe that there’s room for differences of opinion, but I’m most interested in facts. Right? LotsOfStrings (talk) 15:53, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Since CCSDS is a consensus organization I could even have the governing body “bless” the edits. I assume Wikipedia wants accuracy and that’s how we get it.
That is something you don't want to do. While it could potentially be used as a primary source, you may only use it for things that are not contentious (more info at WP:ABOUTSELF). Ideally information is taken from sources that follow the golden rule; that is, sources that are reliable, independent of the subject, and significantly covers the subject.
While I have a slight bone to pick with Wikipedia for what it's concerned about, the encyclopedia is concerned that the information can be verified from reliable sources, not the absolute truth. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 17:57, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
And, to add to what Tenryuu says, "blessing" by the governing body is not required: in fact it is totally irrelevant. If reliable sources said something significant about the organisation which the governing body really didn't want repeated, it could and possibly should still go in the article. ColinFine (talk) 21:27, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thanks for clarifying this. I would myself be interested in whatever any “reliable sources” would have to say. That said, I wonder how you assess “reliability”. LotsOfStrings (talk) 23:44, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
There are links in my comment above that will take you to the relevant pages, such as Wikipedia:Reliable sources. If a source you want to cite isn't on the list of perennial reliable sources, you can ask at the reliable sources noticeboard. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 01:05, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Splitting off parts of two articles to make a third. Some questions[edit]

I suggested splitting off the history sections of Gay literature and Lesbian literature into their own article (something like History of LGBT literature) back in February because of the size of their history sections, but never went through with making a full proposal due to a combination of not knowing how and some difficulty staying logged in to the site. I've decided to try to come back to that and have read WP:Split but I'm still confused. Specifically, my questions are how should I format the split template, and where should the central discussion for this take place? I assume that since it involves two articles being split to make a third merged one, it shouldn't just be on one of their talk pages, should it?--Lover of lgbt literature (talk) 06:34, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Lover of lgbt literature.
If you have a discussion anywhere, then you can post an appropriate notice on other talk pages directing people to that discussion but I would suggest that in this case the central discussion belongs on the talk page of the LGBT studies WikiProject. If you were to go there then the template would look something like {{Split section|History of LGBT literature|discuss=Wikipedia talk:WikiProject LGBT studies#Discussion Title}}. Does that help? -- D'n'B-t -- 07:06, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @Meena1998: the problem isn't so much the writing style, but rather the content. Your draft merely describes what the business does, including very specifically what projects it has worked on, the awards it has won, its CSR initiatives, etc. While I can understand that's what the business would like to tell the world about itself, we have no interest in that. We want to see what independent and reliable secondary sources have said about this company, and in particular about what makes it noteworthy, rather than just another ROTM business. HTH, -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 07:42, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I Understand, I took an existing article as a reference to write this one, only difference is that they have not added any projects and CSR activities, If I remove those content will it be Good to go? Meena1998 (talk) 07:52, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Meena1998: as mentioned already, we need to see what independent and reliable secondary sources, entirely of their own volition, have chosen to say about this business. If you can find multiple (3+) such sources, and summarise (in your own words, but without any additional commentary or embellishment) their coverage, then it may be possible to have an article on this subject accepted. Can't really say much more than that, without seeing what you come up with. -- DoubleGrazing (talk) 09:03, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Meena1998, five awards are listed. Three aren't sourced at all, and a fourth is sourced to a mere PR vehicle. I haven't looked at the fifth, but I'll assume for a moment that it's reliable. So in this section, reliable sourcing is running at an unimpressive 20%. -- Hoary (talk) 09:23, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Also, minor awards - those that are not themselves Wikipedia articles (Academy, Nobel, etc.) can be listed but do not contribute to establishing notability. David notMD (talk) 12:02, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

You could try over at Wikipedia:Requested articles, but I can see you already created a draft in your sandbox in May; this draft has subsequently been deleted as advertising (correctly, imho, as the page was written in very promotional tones). Gregg Bissonette[edit]

I made a few edits to Gregg’s page. As of now he is currently Modern Drummers reader poll winner. For people wanting to know about him, that’s important current information about his accomplishments. So that being the first thing people read would be a smart addition. Is there a way to keep that info at the top being that it is a current highlight in his drumming career? Thank you, Mike Mike Drums (talk) 11:54, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Mike Drums Your two attempts at additions to Gregg Bissonette were reverted because you did not provide a verifying reference. You were informed of this reason on your Talk page. David notMD (talk) 12:05, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
In this set of edits, you added Gregg Bissonette has the well-deserved honor of being Modern Drummers current, 2023, readers poll winner of the Best "All Around" drummer category. How is this so important that it must precede the introductory sentence? How may the reader verify this? Who says that it's well-deserved, and where do they say it? In this set of edits, you added Gregg Bissonette has the well deserved honor of being the current, 2023, Modern Drummer readers poll winner in the Best All Around” drummer category. Same questions. -- Hoary (talk) 12:09, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi Hoary. Thanks for the feedback
If I change the wording and can figure out how to add verification (don’t know how to do that currently) can it be placed at the top being that it is current information?
Thank you,

@Mike Drums There are detailed instructions for citing your sources at WP:CITE. You are proposing to edit a biography of a living peron for which we have very strict sourcing/citation requirements (see that link). You should place the new material about the award in the relevant section of the main article and only repeat that in the WP:LEAD if it is one of the most important of his accomplishments. The fact that it is the most recent is not relevant. Mike Turnbull (talk) 15:16, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hello, Mike Drums. To add to what Mike Turnbull has said: no article should ever refer to anything in evaulative terms such as "well-deserved" in Wikipedia's voice. If a reliable source, wholly independent from the subject, has referred to the subject in such terms, it may be permissible to include a direct attributed quote. help with posting first article[edit]

Hi all! My recent submission was rejected and I have no idea why - please could someone give me some guidance. I am really not sure why this has happened. EmmaKendrickCox (talk) 15:19, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi @EmmaKendrickCox. To put it bluntly, your sandbox draft was a promotional advert for Russell. Wikipedia is not a place to promote people. Your draft would be suited for an About Me page on his personal website, but not an encyclopedia.
How are you connected to Russell? Qcne (talk) 15:52, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi there - I am sorry about that. Russell is someone I know, he's done incredible work in the entrepreneurial space and boosting the economy in Scotland. I was under the impression that because of his philanthorpic work and his work with uplifting the economy this was within the guardrails. EmmaKendrickCox (talk) 15:59, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@EmmaKendrickCox You have a conflict of interest, so you should check WP:COI to understand the requirements.
Wikipedia articles must be about topics that pass our notability policy, in this case WP:NPEOPLE. We require multiple published reliable independent sources to establish notability. Russell may be notable if he has been reported on in aforementioned sources, so if you want to try again please carefully read your first article. Qcne (talk) 16:02, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@EmmaKendrickCox The draft in your sandbox will shortly be deleted. It seems to be an attempt to be a biography of a living person called Russell Dalgleish. However, it cites no sources, which is against Wikipedia policy for biographies of living people. As such it can never be accepted as an article. If you intend to try again with a new draft, please follow the procedure described at WP:AfC after having read this page about conflict of interest and this essay about creating articles. DYK question[edit]

Hello, I am a frequent editor but new to DYK. I just rewrote Theatre Development Fund which used to be exceptionally promotional and changed everything in the article (save for a some references here and there) so that it complied with WP:PROMO, such that only a very small amount of the former prose remains. While the article is not necessarily "new", it was significantly improved in my opinion, I think it is also new since most of the prose is new. My question is does this merit the nomination of the article for DYK (ie. would it be taken seriously) although does not technically fall under the "new" article category, GA, or five-fold expansion categories? Any feedback on the article would be greatly appreciated (such as if everthing I did was unneccessary)!! Thank you, P,TO 19104 (talk) (contribs) 16:32, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Would it be possible for Wikipedia to stop changing appearance?[edit]

As a decades-long user of Wikipedia, I don't know what inspired the recent changes to the site's appearance. First, the Table of Contents became a sidebar, and now it assumes a large browser-window -- at least when javascript is not used. Map of state highlighting a county[edit]

Map of West Virginia highlighting Fayette County
Map of Maryland highlighting Talbot County

Something has happened to the Wikimedia Commons state maps highlighting a county. The maps used to show the entire state and its counties, with the highlighted county in red. Now, the map of the state, and all the counties except the highlighted county, is gone. Examples are the maps in the InfoBoxes for Battle of Charleston (1862), Battle of Cove Mountain, Battle of Droop Mountain, Battle of Fayetteville (1862). There are others. All of these maps used to show the entire state divided by county. The state was white with borders in black. The highlighted county was a solid red. Now, the only thing that appears is the red part. Looking at only the file "Map of West Virginia highlighting Fayette County.svg" in WikiMedia, it says the English version is used in over 40 pages. What happened? Will it be restored? TwoScars (talk) 17:10, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

I certainly hope so. The current map is remarkably useless. Maproom (talk) 19:14, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I see it's been fixed, with the comment "neuter the clipping path". Maproom (talk) 06:55, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
This has been bugging me. It still appears as such on my end on the linked pages. Oddly enough it started with this new redesign. 2604:2D80:D503:3700:AF70:7991:DFAD:B637 (talk) 10:40, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
There is a post on Commons:Graphics village pump called Map of state highlighting a county. Evidently, the SVG file source does not validate and does not work on modern browsers. Someone has fixed Fayette County, but basically all of the states have the problem. Other West Virginia counties such as Kanawha County, Pocahontas County, and Hardy County have not been fixed. Also noticed Wythe County, Virginia needs to be fixed. Also noticed Talbot County, Maryland needs to be fixed. TwoScars (talk) 15:44, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Why this article is rejected[edit]

This draft article is rejected for having references from a single source.but i don't know why this excuse was given as it has already cited many sources.can any body help me with this.
--kemel49(connect)(contri) 18:58, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

It wasn't rejected, it was declined. If it was rejected, the message would have said so, and this means you should not pursue further attempts to publish it. But because it was declined, that means the reviewer thinks it may have potential but it still needs improvement before it is deemed acceptable for publication in article space. It wasn't declined for having a single source, it was declined for not citing reliable sources. ~Anachronist (talk) 19:05, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

I have magazine articles but they aren't archived online. OK to use for citations?[edit]

I reached out to several people who were involved with the production of the media I am making an article about. One responded and this person provided to me several magazine pages and clippings. Although I haven't extensively looked online yet (I'd like to ask in advance), I don't know if they could be found in an online database of magazine articles. Is it still okay to use them for citations? WindowColorCenter (talk) 20:29, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

The problem with a collection of clippings is they won't necessarily have provenance. There's a big difference between "a clipping from my collection says XYZ", and "an article from issue #420 of Generic Magazine (June 1999, page 65) says XYZ", even if the clipping is the article.
If you can provide bibliographic information for when and where the articles were published - even if they're not online yet - we should be good. DS (talk) 20:36, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@DragonflySixtyseven Thank you, that's the info I was hoping to find. That comes across hopeful on my end. Alright, I'll put my best into getting something together. WindowColorCenter (talk) 20:42, 21 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

How do I make a Wikipedia article for a subject with an article that already exists?[edit]

By creating a page with a disambiguator in the title. How do I edit the Charles Darwin page?[edit]

I want to edit the Charles Darwin page but see that there is a note saying I should go to this page if I want to do that. Please could someone explain how I should proceed. The edits I would like to make are described below.

It should be made clear that in "The Origin" Darwin attributes several adaptions to what he calls "use and disuse" which involves the inheritance of acquired characterists which is a component of Lamark's theory of evolution. Currently the article mentions that three of Darwin's contemporaries (Robert Grant, Ernst Haeckel and Herbert Spencer) held Lamarkian views. It also describes one of Darwin's notes as dismissing as absurd the Lamarkian view of progression to higher forms. This strongly gives the impression that Darwin had discarded Larmarkian thinking which is wrong. Darwin argues for Lamarkian evoutionary mechanisms in "The Origin" and even more so in the later editions and other subsequent published material.

It should also be stated in the article that Darwin did not understand that natural selection was responsible for species conformity (stabilizing selection) and this led him to articulate, in "The Origin" a confusing theory about the nature of variation.

These two issues (which in fact I think are intimately related to each other but I will not explain why here as that is my personal opinion) are interesting and noteworthy and by including them in the article will give a fuller, more balanced and more interesting account of Darwin.

How to prevent the Wikidata template from returning multiple values?[edit]

Hi Teahouse!

I was trying to figure out why one of the boxes in Comparison of Java virtual machines said "Error: first parameter cannot be parsed as a date or time." From what I figured out, Template:Start date and age was unhappy because it was getting multiple values from Wikidata:

{{Start date and age|{{wikidata|qualifier|Q16928072|P348|P577}}}}

The inner Template:Wikidata was looking up the item Q16928072 (GraalVM), the property P348 (software version), and then the qualifier P577 (publication date). It seems that a bot came along and marked an older "software version" as preferred. The last added "software version" was also marked as preferred.

The command {{wikidata|qualifier| is meant to return a single qualifier, but because there were 2 preferred "software version" properties, it retrieved 2 "publication date" qualifiers, like so:

20 November 2019; 13 June 2023; Error: first parameter cannot be parsed as a date or time.

The versions happened to be out of date, so I tried my hand at updating the Wikidata item. I also unmarked the bot's preferred ranking. For now the box correctly reads:

16 April 2024; 2 months ago

Does anyone know how to use Template:Wikidata to only choose the most recent date, regardless of preferred ranking? I don't know if my solution is the most robust, since another bot could reintroduce multiple values. Blepbob (talk) 00:43, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

According to Template:Wikidata/doc § cite note-fm-2, the single configuration flag should do what you want. jlwoodwa (talk) 08:29, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
single does limit the result to one, but I'm not sure if it supports sorting the dates by latest. For instance, if there are two preferred software versions with different dates, it seems to just pick the date for the first listed version.
Ah well, maybe the template doesn't support what I'm trying to describe. Thanks anyway. Blepbob (talk) 10:40, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Information Regarding the sources/references given to the articles.[edit]

Can I use this source in my Wikipedia article?[2]

Ig not , than how can I find out the source is unreliable for Wikipedia. What WP:RAJ is? Roberthooke003 (talk) 01:02, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Roberthooke003: You can use {{Cite book}} to cite that book in an article. That WP shortcut you link appears to be some user's essay. RudolfRed (talk) 02:24, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
So can I use the source in my article? Is that not a WP:NOTRS, is it a reliable source? How can I check weather it's reliable or not? Roberthooke003 (talk) 02:30, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hello. The reliable source noticeboard is the best place to ask about reliability of sources. Note that the reliability of a source depends on many factors, including precisely what information the source is being used to support. A book from a reputable publisher more than a hundred years ago may be a very good source for some things, but I would be dubious about what an English (presumably) writer in the 1920s had to say about sensitive cultural issues in seventeenth century India. I've found a suspicious "volunteer" article reviewer and want to know what to do.[edit]

I can provide screenshots and have a problem believing this account reviewing things is a human trying to promote education. How do I submit this issue to a human? Thank you for your help RoseAliceD (talk) 02:44, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

All editors on Wikipedia, including all article reviewers, are (unpaid) volunteers from Wikipedia's point of view (though a relatively small number are paid by subjects to create articles on those subjects, and a small percentage of that number follow all the rules and succeed). You'll have to be more specific about what you think the problem is. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 151.227.226.178 (talk) 04:32, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@RoseAliceD If you are referring to the comments on your two-sentence draft Draft:Entheogenic Research, Integration, and Education (ERIE), I suggest you continue to improve it, noting the comments made by the reviewer and following the helpful links therefrom. If you're referring to something else, please be specific and add a link. Shantavira|feed me 06:06, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
What an extraordinary accusation! Your draft has zero indication of passing any of our criteria for notability and was correctly declined. Theroadislong (talk) 07:15, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
User:RoseAliceD: User:SafariScribe declined your draft as not establishing the notability of its subject, and left a template at the top explaining this. Any competent reviewer would have done the same. Maproom (talk) 07:20, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Pinging SafariScribe, since it's not very nice to discuss people behind their backs Even if you are accusing them of being non-human. -- D'n'B-t -- 07:33, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
This is in all round called incivility by accusing another editor of WP:UPE or promoting a specific article. I don't see any serious issue here but will require to see the screenshot @RoseAliceD is talking about. It now make me feel this editor has a relatable WP:COI issue and should be declared. This is really a great insult to me. Thanks Theroadislong, Shantavira, and Maproom for answering the editor. @DandelionAndBurdock, you did well with the ping. Safari ScribeEdits! RoseAliceD, you submitted a two sentence piece of junk that is nowhere near being an acceptable encyclopedia article, and you chose to attack and insult the volunteer reviewer, a human with feelings, instead of improving the draft. Is that the level of excellence taught at the San Francisco institution you are writing about? By the way, please fully and accurately describe your connection to the entity called "Entheogenic Research, Integration, and Education". Cullen328 (talk) 08:16, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Well please look at Safari Scribe's talk page before you insult my writing. Someone else commented that they were doing something suspicious on their talk page and you're assuming that they are a human with feelings, not some kind of scam. SafariScribe is an experienced draft reviewer, also active in moving flawed new articles to draft ('draftify') and nominating articles for deletion. Declining your (completely inadequate) draft was normal procedure. You next proper step is to either attempt to improve your draft before resubmitting or else asking that an Administrator delete it. Continuing to attack SafariScribe will likely lead to your account being indefinitely blocked for incivility and not being here to contribute to the encyclopedia. David notMD (talk) 14:09, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
You demonstrated a similar pattern of attacking an editor who was reverting your edits, as evidenced in the March 2024 entry on your Talk page: "...as I think you have a personal bias and will find some fault in anything I do because of that bias." David notMD (talk) 14:20, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I have looked at SafariScribe's talk page I cannot see where anyone commented that they were doing something suspicious. -- D'n'B-t -- 14:26, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
RoseAliceD, please be aware that Safari Scribe has over 23,000 edits and has never been blocked. You, on the other hand, have 45 edits, and are persisting in attacking the other editor without evidence, which is a violation of the well-established behavioral guideline, Assume good faith. We are interested in evidence instead of groundless suspicions. You have offered none of the former and plenty of the latter. Cullen328 (talk) 15:37, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Will including this story in an article run up against BLP?[edit]

This article is the only sourced piece I can find about this possible controversy: https://www.calcalistech.com/ctechnews/article/b1a1jn00hc, in the interests of not violating BLP, is this substantial enough for inclusion in the Gili Raanan article? Smallangryplanet (talk) 12:26, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Smallangryplanet Calcalist seems to be a valid source, although it has not been discussed at WP:RSPS. The article is quite long and clearly Raanan knows about it since it includes comments from him. Thus I think it is valid to include material from that article provided you do so neutrally and without undue weight. In particular, I would avoid using the word "controversy": The article is critical but does not seem to be trying to be controversial. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:59, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Saddle Tramp vs Cowboy[edit]

While creating the subject article Mesannie Wilkins (Last of the Saddle Tramps), I realized there was no article I could link that defined what a "Saddle Tramp" actually was: Saddle Tramp. WP states: "A saddle tramp is a nomadic cowboy" and links to cowboy; which is incorrect. A Saddle Tramp is specifically "a person who wanders from place to place on horseback." It even equates itself to modern times for a person who does not drive a car and has no shame in asking for a lift: "I had to take that saddle tramp home from work again today." It has nothing to do with herding cattle from one territory to another for months at a time. Obviously WP would benefit from the correction by creating an article for "Saddle Tramp"; however, how would I go about dealing with the disambiguation page already created for the term Saddle Tramp? Would I redirect the page to Saddle Tramp and head the article with: "For other uses, see Saddle Tramp (disambiguation)"? Thanks. Maineartists (talk) 15:20, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

That seems like a reasonable course of action. Since the definition of "saddle tramp" would be the primary topic, the existing disambiguation page can be defined as such with the (disambiguation) after it. Same logic is defined at WP:D2D. Reconrabbit 15:46, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Maineartists Note that Wiktionary does have an entry for wikt:saddle tramp with a definition agreeing with you. Hence you could use that on DAB pages and elsewhere. Mike Turnbull (talk) 17:06, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Eloise R. Weld information[edit]

Book cover info on back jacket cover about Eloise R. Weld says: Eloise R. Weld grew up in the world about which she writes. She and her husband live in New York and have a farm in Pennsylvania where they raise steeplechase horses and cattle. RING OF GOLD is a sequel to her first novel, Engagement.

Can information about her and her books be included in Wikipedia? Logan-713 (talk) 15:46, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

There is no article about Weld. You could attempt one via WP:YFA, but new editors are strongly advised to gain experience improving existing articles before trying to create one. David notMD (talk) 16:03, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Logan-713. Only two books? Weld would need to meet the criteria outlined at WP:NAUTHOR, which does not appear to be the case. Shantavira|feed me 16:37, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
However, there may be enough reviews to help an article on Engagement (Weld novel) (draft) pass AFC and WP:NBOOK (per a quick glance at Newspapers.com via WP:Library). Request For Help[edit]

Hi. I apologize if I am posting this request for help in the wrong place; I'm doing so because I have been blocked from all the other Wikimedia sites, and when I try to write to the person who has blocked me, I receive messages that I have been blocked. This seems to have originated at Wikisource, and I have never made any type of edit to Wikisource. The edits I've made over the years are few in number and have always been constructive.

There are two entities that have blocked me: 1) User:Jan.Kamenicek, and 2) Something called Epic, which has blocked me until 2007; the page in which Epic announced that I am blocked seems to have disappeared now, but I am still blocked.

I have not made any edits to any Wikimedia sites in recent history. On the few occasions that I have made edits to Wikipedia, I have done so while logged in to my account name, "Enactataph". My edits have always been constructive.

Again, I have never made any edit on Wikisource. This is what Jan Kamenicek determined:

This IP address is currently blocked. The latest block log entry is provided below for reference:

If Jan Kamenicek and Epic had messaged me about some concern about an IP address, we could have happily clarified the matter by email. I tried to do so, but I seem to be blocked everywhere but here.

I followed the administrative and help links associated with the blocks imposed by Jan Kamenicek and Epic, but these links led to further messages that I was blocked and could not write a message or ask a discussion question. Therefore, I'm writing here, as it's the only source I can access.

Thank you for your consideration and any help you can suggest about this matter.

Sincerely, Enactataph Enactataph (talk) 16:51, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

  • Thanks for the ping. To answer Drmies, I'm doing well and my day is going the same. As for the issues with the global block, which block are you affected by? The /32 range you have specified is not globally blocked, but I see two /64 ranges which I blocked four days ago. I don't know which of them, but in either case, if you are still affected, please email us at stewards@wikimedia.org with the relevant information and we will assist you. Regarding the enwikisource block, the block was placed on a large range, meaning it can be expected that it will affect some innocent users. I've tried force creating a local account for you, since the block only affects anonymous users, meaning you should be able to log in and edit there if you want to. Question about how articles are written[edit]

Hello,

Should the articles be written in the passive or active voice..in terms of grammar? Is there some sort of policy that covers this information? Normanhunter2 (talk) 18:06, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

All articles are to be written in a neutral point of view. You can read more at Wikipedia:Neutral point of view but more specifically at WP:VOICE. Thank you, Cowboygilbert - (talk) ♥ 19:57, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Whether a sentence should be written in active voice (Critics overwhelmingly praised the film...) or passive voice (The film was overwhelmingly praised [by critics]...) depends heavily on context, which may be why the manual of style (MOS) doesn't really say anything about it directly. MOS tends to advise on matters broadly applicable.
Some style guidelines may affect which "voice" to use—as well as how to resolve conflicts between editors who prefer one over the other—but I could talk all day and night in the general and yield very little useful or actionable info. If you have a specific sentence, please feel free to quote it and name the article it's in. Hope that gives you a starting point. Rotideypoc41352 (talk · contribs) 22:46, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Question[edit]

20 years ago or so I advertised to find someone to help edit and improve my Wikipedia page. I did not know that that was a terrible idea to pay someone. Editing people at Wikipedia reacted strongly. Some sort of senior editor stepped in, and I wound up with a very short page. Now that I am 80 years old, it is time to beef up that page; Nicholas Lore. I am not capable of doing this myself, and I doubt if I will be able to find someone who can volunteer to do it. That means I need to pay someone. How can I do that? How can I discern who is reputable? Just to say a bit about myself, My number one book has been in the top 1/5 of one percent on Amazon Amazon for 24 years. I was one of the pioneers of your organic farming field in the 70s. Etc. etc. Is there a way to find a reputable person to write my Wikipedia page? How would I go about doing that? Gangalo (talk) 20:18, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

 Courtesy link: Nicholas Lore Cowboygilbert - (talk) ♥ 20:20, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
User:Northamerica1000 actively edited the article back in 2012 and is still an active editor. On that person's Talk page you could ask if the person is willing to add new information and references, with you offering to provide your proposed text and properly formatted references. Your new content cannot be what you know about yourself, but rather be limited to what can be verified by reliable source references published by people with no connection to you. The fact that you book sells at Amazon does not belong in the article. If you were influential in 1970s organic farming, that will require what people other than you having written about you. References are not required to be internet-accessable. David notMD (talk) 22:11, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Some of the content created back in 2011 (available at View history), for example Personal life, may be salvaged, but only if references are available. David notMD (talk) 22:15, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Gangalo Someone correct me if I am wrong, but it is not technically against Wikipedia policy to pay someone to edit pages, even pages that are about you or about a topic that you have a conflict of interest (COI) with. However, there are rules and regulations governing what you, and the person(s) you employ as editors, must do if you decide to engage in paid editing: please read WP:PAID. Even if you are not paying someone to edit Wikipedia, you are required to disclose if you edit pages that you have a COI with, such as your own biography article; for those rules, please see WP:COI. While I advise you to read both pages thoroughly, a high level summary is that you are required to:
  • Disclose any paid editing and any COI's. One easy way of doing the latter is to edit your user page and add the template {{Connected contributor}}, with appropriate arguments, to the page. Similarly, any editors you employ should use {{Connected contributor (paid)}}.
  • Generally avoid editing COI articles directly; though I believe it is not technically against the rules to do so per se, it is strongly advised that you instead submit edit requests on the talk page of any article that you wish to edit, using the template {{Edit COI}}, at which point other editors will consider effecting your suggestions.
Again, I suggest you review the policies that I have linked thoroughly yourself; the summary I have provided here is only done out of courtesy, and should not be taken as comprehensive or definitive in any way.
As for your questions about how to find a reputable person to help you write your Wikipedia page, I am afraid that I cannot be of much help there, and I am skeptical anyone else will be of much service to you here either. I would just advise that you employ the same sorts of general common sense when looking to contract anyone for any job: see if you can find a reputable merchant with verifiable positive reviews and a history of client satisfaction. I actually do know of several agencies which do this sort of work on Wikipedia but I have not worked with them and thus it would not be ethical for me to suggest them here, but Google is your friend—just try to be discerning and skeptical, as there are also scammers out there.Brusquedandelion (talk) 03:59, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

User:Vif12vf repeatedly reverting my contributions[edit]

User:Vif12vf has been constantly reverting my contributions to pages pertaining to pakistani political parties. I have made constructive updates to the articles and he immediately proceeds to inexplicably revert them, and now he is threatening me and accusing me of vandalism. AgentDuck11 (talk) 21:33, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@AgentDuck11: Don't engage in an edit war. You have been warned several times about adding images to various pages. I have not looked at those images, but you should stop and discuss it with the other editor. RudolfRed (talk) 21:39, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@AgentDuck11: I'll second the recommendation not to edit war. If someone is reverting your edits, stop and discuss it rather than persisting. Your edits are not vandalism, but the the images you are uploading to the Commons are not being appropriately attributed. Looking at the files you have uploaded (take File:Aam Awam Party Flag.jpg for example) you are indicating "own work" under the source. Since the flag is not your work, it is not appropriate to upload it in this manner. You need to indicate where you got the file with evidence that it is in the public domain or under a creative commons license. Until you have that figured out, I suggest that you stop uploading images. TornadoLGS (talk) 21:48, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
what if i created the flag myself in an editing software? AgentDuck11 (talk) 01:04, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@AgentDuck11: I think it would only count as your work if you created the design. But here, from what you said, it seems you are just manually copying it. For someone more experienced in this matter, you should get advice on the Commons. Commons:Village pump/Copyright would probably be the place it ask. Be advised, though, any files that are copyrighted will need to be deleted. That may be the case with some of them since at least some of the pages you edited are using their current images under fair use. Wikipedia allows images to be uploaded under fair use in some instances, but the Commons does not. TornadoLGS (talk) 02:35, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

I'm not a fan of how these things are handled here at WP. First, I clearly see an editor who has made it their mission to track another editor by following article by article, edit by edit, and revert without leaving either an informative History Summary or a sensible Talk Page reason to help educate the editor from continuing their incorrect manner of editing. WP fails more often than naught to educate rather than revert and move on. Vif12vf left a slew of "Template" warnings on AgentDuck11's Talk Page here: [3]. All this does is say what the editor did wrong and tells them to "reference this" for more information. I call this lazy editing and non-productive assistance at WP. Helping not only goes a long way, but 9-out-of-10 times, it prevents future incorrect edits. AgentDuck11 went to Vif12vf's Talk Page [4] and started a conversation with them (albiet a bit brusque); and all they were met with was everything they did wrong and a threat: "...and may also get you banned for poor personal behaviour!" Not one bit of offering to assist. At least TornadoLGS used the voice of reason: "From appearances, it seems that AgentDuck is not acting in bad faith but is simply ignorant of how to handle proper attribution or copyright. While their response was not WP:CIVIL I don't think this editing counts as deliberate vandalism." The above editors should be equally holding Vif12vf accountable for constantly tracking / following AgentDuck [5], [6], [7], [8], [9], [10], [11], this goes on and on. (Ironically, this is not the first time Vif12vf has been accused of an edit war: [12]. [13].) There must be some WP policy against this behavior; and certainly a better way for an editor to handle this situation. It doesn't solve anything. It just leads to more confusion and outreach for discussions like here. Maineartists (talk) 03:19, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Cannot link articles[edit]

Hi. There's an article Bolivian wine. And I see in Spanish wiki, there's an article as well (Vino de Bolivia). When I try to link them I get this error: The link eswiki:Vino de Bolivia is already used by Item Q2880868. You may remove it from Q2880868 if it does not belong there or merge the Items if they are about the exact same topic.

I checked the page in eswiki. The "Languages" section is empty. Aredoros87 (talk) 21:36, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Aredoros87: For future reference, such issues should be posted to Wikidata, not here. Anyways, the issue seems to be that Wikidata:Q2880868 and Wikidata:Q122496960 are duplicates. This can be solved by merging them, which it appears someone just went ahead and did a few minutes ago. So the issue should be fixed. However, I am still not seeing this reflected in the list of language links on either language's Wikipedia. It is possible this takes a bit of time to propagate, so check back in a bit. There's apparently a spike in Wikimedia errors right now (see here) so that may be related. Brusquedandelion (talk) 22:21, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hi Aredoros87. The "Languages" section was empty in es:Vino de Bolivia because it was the only article in its Wikidata item Bolivian wine (Q2880868). The English Bolivian wine had its own Wikidata item Bolivian wine (Q122496960) where it was also alone. I have merged the two Wikidata items so the articles should now or soon link eachother. Wikipedia is partially down at the moment and I cannot check it. Updates may also be delayed. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:40, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Regarding wikipedias arbitrary sanctions on topics related to the Arab-Israeli conflict[edit]

I have recently received a notification in my talk page that there is policy of extended confirmed protection regarding the contentious topic. I have seen there are many pages that lack such protection despite pertaining to the contentious topic, I would like to inquire whether a user without extended privileges can edit such a page or not. Considering that he does not enter any dispute in this case. Tribol (talk) 21:40, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Tribol: If your account is not extended-confirm, then you may not edit the article if the WP:ECR is in effect, even if the page is not protected. You may use the talk page to suggest edits. RudolfRed (talk) 21:51, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
What if nobody responds on the articles talk page? Whats the ruling then. Tribol (talk) 21:52, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Nothing changes. Work on something else instead. RudolfRed (talk) 21:57, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I would also like to ask, the procedure in case of an article regarding the contentious topic, will the AfC procedure remain the same? Tribol (talk) 22:05, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
You cannot create a new article. Non-extended-confirmed editors may not create new articles. You really should work on something else. Wikipedia has more than 6 million articles, many of which need improvement. Don't focus on areas you can't help in yet. RudolfRed (talk) 22:08, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I would like to add that if you do find pages that should be under ECP per the sanctions, a request should be placed at WP:RFPP. This seems to be the case mainly for newer articles or ones that have otherwise escaped notice. TornadoLGS (talk) 22:11, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Tribol, as to the wording of your section header, these restrictions are the exact opposite of "arbitrary". They are carefully crafted to manage the severe disruption from both sides that has affected this topic area for many years, and the are widely supported by experienced editors. Is there any template like {{redirect-distinguish-multi}}?[edit]

Is there a template that combines {{redirect-distinguish}} and {{redirect-multi}}, such that the output text reads something like "A and B redirect here. Not to be confused with C." If no such template exists, does anyone have advice on how to create such a hatnote? Brusquedandelion (talk) 22:11, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hi Brusquedandelion. You can write anything with {{Hatnote}} but such a hatnote would very rarely be appropriate. What is your use case? PrimeHunter (talk) 23:35, 22 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@PrimeHunter I would like the page Dravidianist to redirect to Dravidian nationalism, as Dravidianism already does, as, generally, a Dravidianist is a subscriber to the ideology of Dravidianism, aka Dravidian nationalism. However, Dravidianist may mistakenly be mixed up by people with Dravidologist (presently a redirect to Dravidian studies, because a Dravidologist is a scholar of that field), and so I would like the hatnote to say "Dravidianism and Dravidianist redirect here. Not to be confused with Dravidology." Note that I have yet to create Dravidianist as I am trying to figure out how to resolve this first. Brusquedandelion (talk) 03:43, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Brusquedandelion: "Dravidianist" and "Dravidianism" are so similar that there is no need to mention both in a hatnote directing to the same article. Just say:
Everybody sees the same hatnotes no matter how they came to an article. Readers arriving via "Dravidianist" can also use this hatnote to find their target. Hatnotes are a distraction to everybody who is already on the right page so they should be brief. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:12, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

What am I doing wrong?[edit]

I am having a hard time understanding how to make my draft better so the page will be approved. I'm trying to write about a grocery store that I feel is very important to local history. I have submitted my draft three times.

Initially, I was relying on some online news sources that might not have been the greatest. However, I feel that my most recent draft has really strong sources. I found about half of the sources on the school databases. (I am a high school teacher.) I think that I cited those correctly, but maybe I am wrong? Am I allowed to use those sources even though I had to use my school account to access them?

Or maybe there are other reasons why my page keeps getting rejected? Bdicoccosix (talk) 00:47, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Hello Bdicoccosix and welcome to the Teahouse.
This draft, right? Draft:Green Hills 1
I looked at the sources and, to me, many of them contain enough promotional language, as well as quotes from store's officials, that I'm reluctant to see them as the sort of coverage that meets the requirements for business notability. But your draft has not been rejected. When a draft is declined, the notice is supposed to indicate ways in which it can be improved. The notice can be fairly generic, though, so this is probably best interpreted as "you need better sources".
There is nothing wrong with using sources that require a subscription or that you found via databases. You appear to be properly citing the original publications, even if the URL links sometimes go to an aggregator or database provider. — jmcgnh(talk) (contribs) 01:17, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Hello, @Bdicoccosix, and welcome to the Teahouse. Looking at Draft:Green Hills 1, It seems to me like you've chosen to write about a local business that, like millions around the world, simply doesn't meet our Notability Criteria. At a quick glance, all your sources appear to be either from insider business websites, or are from local news sources. Please read WP:NCORP to appreciate that a business needs to have been written about by major, mainstream media in quite some depth and detail before we can accept an article about it. Inevitably, there will be inumerable trade magazines and press releases that talk about and promote these local businesses. But what we need to see is real national interest and coverage shown by unconnected media in that company. If you can provide at least three major (i.e. national) news stories that have described this business, then you might stand a chance. I fear that, at present, it doesn't yet meet our notability criteria. Nick Moyes (talk) 01:18, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Thank you so much for taking the time to get back to me. I do appreciate that Wikipedia tries to draw a firm boundary so that businesses cannot promote themselves on Wikipedia; rather, businesses only exist on Wikipedia if they are "notable." However, I actually really do think that Green Hills Farms is notable, but I will continue to research.
I do understand your points about the local news articles. However, I thought that these sources really demonstrated the notability of the store:
Clark, Ken (December 2005). "Pointing to loyalty: Green Hills' latest strategy brings kiosks and biometrics to the forefront". Chain Store Age. 81 (12): 136. Retrieved 2024-06-21.
Turcsik, Richard (June 2004). "At a Syracuse, N.Y. independent, their roots are showing: from a humble roadside farm stand, Green Hills has developed into one of the most admired grocers in America". Progressive Grocer. 83 (9): 46+. Retrieved 2024-06-21.
Again, thank you for your help. This is my first time attempting to create a page, and I appreciate the learning process! Bdicoccosix (talk) 02:16, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

EDIT CONFLICT Hi there, Bdicoccosix. I just wrote to you on your Talk Page and tried to break down your article content with specifics explanations; basically mirroring what Nick Moyes just wrote. Hope it helps! Maineartists (talk) 01:24, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Late autoconfirmed[edit]

I have been on for five days and have 111 (now 112) edits, and yet it doesn't say I am autoconfirmed. I have double-checked that I am not on Tor and not on IP block exemption. Since today started three hours ago in UTC, do I need to do the ten edits during today and in the following days, or is something else at play? Apollogetticax (talk) 03:22, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Apollogetticax: your account isn't yet four days old. Elli (talk | contribs) 03:25, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
How? I started on June 18, and in UTC it is June 23. Apollogetticax (talk) 03:27, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Apollogetticax: It's more specific than just the date. Your account was created at 22:37, 19 June 2024 (UTC). So you'll be autoconfirmed at 22:37 on the 23rd, UTC. It's currently 03:35, so you've got about a day to wait. Elli (talk | contribs) 03:35, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
So basically, I've been waiting for two days with false hopes of achieving Twinkle? Anyway, thanks. (no sarcasm assured) Apollogetticax (talk) 03:38, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
@Apollogetticax: Special:CentralAuth/Apollogetticax shows your account creation in your time zone setting at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-rendering. The four-day requirement means 4×24 hours so whichever time zone you use, it's the same time in the same time zone four days later. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:20, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

What constitutes a "conflict of interest" claim?[edit]

My creation of the page "Phil Thompson (Musician)" Draft:Phil Thompson (musician) - Wikipedia was turned down because of what was called a "conflict of interest."

I do not work for Phil Thomspon, and only created the page when I wanted information on him from Wikipedia and found such a page does not exist. Wadesola (talk) 07:43, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

The article was "draftified"; the draft hasn't been turned down. Just guessing here, but perhaps the quantity of unreferenced material was what led to a suspicion of personal knowledge (and thus COI). 36.52.60.225 (talk) 08:47, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Red links for Gloucestershire + missing photos in the Gloucester reigon[edit]

Im looking to write an article about every town and village which currently has a red link in the Gloucestershire region. Is there any page i can create? Snipertron12 Talk 10:08, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

@Snipertron12 Could you clarify your question? I don't see any redlinks in Template:Gloucestershire (click to view). Shantavira|feed me 10:29, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Im talking about missing articles for villages/towns in Gloucestershire. and not to be rude, please dont say (click to view), i've been on Wikipedia for a month by now. - Snipertron12 Talk 10:32, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
Theres a number of redlinks in List of civil parishes in Gloucestershire. I guess you can start with whichever one you're able to find some good info for. Hanham Abbots for instance, seems to have a few interesting buildings [14] [15] which is one place to start. (and there's many images to chose from) -- D'n'B-t -- 10:40, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply
I've finished making all the pre-1974 district pages.. are you proud of me.. Snipertron12 Talk 11:20, 23 June 2024 (UTC)Reply

Should I request a page protection or an IP range block?[edit]

I have been dealing with a persistent IP user adding unsourced content with poor grammar with foreign-language, unrelated, useless and/or absurd edit summaries at Gosains. The IP keeps changing slightly and the user has been warned many times, but the edits are almost completely the same every time. The IP user has also made edits to other pages like Sannyasi rebellion and Yogi Nath. While it seems they have ceased editing the Sannyasi rebellion page, Yogi Nath was last edited by the user (and quickly reverted) yesterday as can be seen here.

I wonder what the correct action would be here, request protection against IP edits on Gosains and Yogi Nath, or request an IP range ban? I know wikipedia generally wants to keep pages free to be edited by IPs, but a range ban could also hit a lot of innocent IPs.

What do more senior editors recommend?
