::So, what you're both saying is that if an account was created earlier on another wiki, it won't show up when it's "created" here. I don't know if the terminology has anything to do with it, but I suppose it was created on fr.wiki but registered here, so no log entry on my watchlist. Just trying to piece this together. I'm sure all this makes total sense to some people, but not much to me. And this isn't purely an academic nit. If I could track an editor's contributions, life would be easier when it comes to monitoring newbie vandals.--Bbb23 (talk) 12:45, 28 October 2022 (UTC)

Image with non-free use rationale that is actually in the public domain
The image :File:Valéry Inkijinoff.jpg has a non-free use rationale. But an identical copy is on Wikimedia Commons, where a procedural deletion request suggests that the file is in the public domain. If this is indeed the case, then the following actions should be taken:
# Restore the original, higher resolution version of this image and transfer it to Commons.
# Delete the Wikipedia copy.

username spelled incorrectly

how can I correct the spelling my username cant find settings....Username should be spelled Floydster.... Foydster (talk) 10:13, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

A very similar question was asked yesterday ("Username correction") - as then, the answer is to see here. AndrewWTaylor (talk) 10:19, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Foydster: The destinationa account already exists – see: Floydster (talk · contribs · logs · block log)
CiaPan (talk) 10:36, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Foydster That other account only made two edits globally, in 2006, one of which was to create a User Page, so you may be able to WP:USURPNAME. See that link for instructions. Mike Turnbull (talk) 10:41, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull and Foydster: But a renaming admin may request a proof that both accounts belong to the same person: Wikipedia:Changing username/Guidelines#Additional guidelines for usurpation requests. --CiaPan (talk) 10:52, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull In order to ensure that usurped usernames be put to good use, we prefer only to grant requests from reasonably well-established users. —MdsShakil (talk) 14:40, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

top grossing tours of all time

Wikipedia,

I don't have an account and previously tried to edit on the top grossing tours of all time but my edit was removed by someone. Billy Joel In Concert tour is on the top grossing tours of the 2010s but not in the top 20 top grossing tours of all time. In addition on the top grossing tours of the 1980s is missing Genesis 1986-1987 Invisible Touch tour that grossed $60 million.

Sincerely,

Switch filename request between 2 new uploaded files

Hello! I upload 2 images, but accidentaly I switched the file names. So the story in the picture A is the story of picture B and story of picture B is the story of picture A. Could you switch me?

Thank you!

@OrionNimrod Only admins on Commons can alter filenames. However, I think that an easier solution would be for you to delete the files entirely and start again, giving them a much simpler filename than the incredibly long ones used currently. You can use Db-author placed at the top of a file's page and it will be deleted in due course. Take a copy, if you don't already have one, for uploading after the deletion (the system won't let you upload a duplicate file). Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:02, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the answer! OrionNimrod (talk) 16:11, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How do I translate an article from an other Language Wikipedia to English Wikipedia via the Import function?

Dear Community,

How do I translate an article from an other Language Wikipedia to English Wikipedia via the Import function? I know there is a function like this the other way around, but I can't find it to translate a german article to english? Can anyone provide me with a link to a "How to Page" for this kind of task?

Thank you very much! Marianne Marianne Fischer (talk) 17:35, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Marianne Fischer. The content translation tool is disabled for newer editors. (See that link for the explanation). ColinFine (talk) 17:41, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello CollinFine, thank you for your fast reply. Is there another option/tool I can use as a User who hasn't edited more than 500 articles already? Marianne Fischer (talk) 18:27, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello again, Marianne. That is the only (semi-)automatic tool, as far as I know; but you are welcome to translate manually. Please see WP:Translation. ColinFine (talk) 20:37, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you so much! This is what I was looking for! :) Happy to do it manually. Thank you and have a great week Marianne Fischer (talk) 20:44, 24 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Why can't you thank IP users edits?

I've read through Help:Notifications/Thanks and understand it, but was just wondering why you can't also "thank" IP editors for their contributions? I'm thinking it may be a technical issue, but was just curious. I see there are alternatives etc, but was wondering specifically about the actual "Thanks" functionality. Ta. Chaheel Riens (talk) 08:14, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How do you know an IP user still has the same IP address when you thank them? Bazza (talk) 08:50, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I don't, but I would be thanking the edit not necessarily the user - which from a certain point of view, is what we do with registered users as well when you get down to it. Anyway, I appreciate the comment, but it's not an answer, unless it was meant as rhetorical - so I'll rephrase: Why can't we thank edits made by IP addresses? Chaheel Riens (talk) 13:38, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Chaheel Riens If you log out, you'll see that a number of features on your menu disappear, including the "Alert" and "Notification" links normally (on a PC browser) across the top of the page. That's one of the technical limitations. As I think you have realised from H:THX, IP users do have Talk Pages and can be contacted for thanks that way, with several templates available. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:53, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I've never edited as an IP, so I wasn't aware of that. I suppose it's one of the arguments for creating an account if the IP is a regular editor. Cheers again. Chaheel Riens (talk) 13:56, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) It was a serious question. You said you've read Help:Notifications/Thanks, but maybe did not notice the feature allows editors to send a "thank you" notification to users who make useful edits: you're not thanking the edit (as you said), you are thanking the user who made it. Bazza (talk) 13:56, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Article issue

My article states that it is written as an advertisement. Please do let me know how to improve it. Hello9627 (talk) 09:15, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello9627 First, if you are associated with the company, please read about conflict of interest and paid editing(which includes mere employment) for information on required formal disclosures.
Wikipedia is not for merely telling about a company and what it does. A Wikipedia article about a company must summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage have chosen on their own to say about the company, showing how it meets the special Wikipedia definition of a notable company. Press releases, staff interviews, announcements of routine business activities, and the like do not establish notability. "Significant coverage" goes beyond the mere reporting of the actitivies of the company and goes into detail about the significance or influence of the company as the source sees it, not as the company itself sees it. Please read Your First Article. I see that you made 10 edits to get autoconfirmed so you could directly create the article- I would strongly urge you to consent to moving the draft to Draft space so you can work on it at your leisure and submit it for a review by a more experienced editor before it is formally placed in the encyclopedia. 331dot (talk) 09:33, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Can someone cite Section 43, Paragraph 2 of the German Residence Act with Template:Cite act? I honestly have no idea how to cite this and I've been trying for a while now and I've given up and resorted to asking for someone to cite it for me as all of my attempts have been futile. If anyone has the spare time to cite this for me I would greatly appreciate it! Treetoes023 (talk) 15:30, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Treetoes023 My first stab would be Act on the Residence, Economic Activity and Integration of Foreigners in the Federal Territory (PDF) (Directive). Federal Ministry of Justice and the Federal Office of Justice. 17 February 2020. p. 69. (see source code for markup). That doesn't use all the available parameters but would get the reader to the correct page, which is all that really matters, I think. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:37, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull:, thank you very much! Because I want to learn so I can use this template without a third party I do have a question. What is a directive, and how did you find out what I asked you to cite was a directive? Treetoes023 (talk) 17:50, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Treetoes023 I personally do not think this is a directive. I would leave the type parameter blank, which defaults to act, which is what the english translation of the name literally has in its name. The only mentions of directive I see in this legislation, are referring to European Directives (which slightly differ from European Regulation. But in general, any German legislation that ends with Gesetz, can be translated to "Act" like Works Constitution Act. WikiProjects WP:GERMANY and WP:WikiProject European Union as well as WP:LAW are good projects for questions about laws in general. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 22:37, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull @Treetoes023 I don't agree that the page number is what matters here, because this is not a book, nor citing a permanently archived webpage. Depending on the language (German/English) the page number may change, but the section and paragraph should stay the same. Additionally, prior paragraphs could be modified/removed, changing the page numbers, but the section ought to stay the same. In German legal texts, an act like this could be cited as AufenthG § 43 (2). I am not a legal scholar though, but regularly work with German legislation, in my work as a works council chair. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 22:45, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Shushugah: Do you know what citation template I would use to cite it as "AufenthG § 43 (2)" because I do not know if I can do that using the cite act template. Treetoes023 (talk) 00:48, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Treetoes023: I'm glad my lack of knowledge prompted others to chip in! I assumed the legislation was a directive as I saw that word several times in the first page but I now realise that Shushugah is correct and it's an Act. The template allows for various parameters as free text, so you could have Act on the Residence, Economic Activity and Integration of Foreigners in the Federal Territory (PDF) (AufenthG § 43 (2)). Federal Ministry of Justice and the Federal Office of Justice. 17 February 2020. p. 69. for example (the rendering as "No." comes from using the |index parameter). However, as already suggested, you might be better to take any detailed questions to the experts elsewhere on-Wiki Mike Turnbull (talk) 10:25, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
In general, I don't find the template that useful for German legislation. I checked all the usages of it, and none of them are used for German legislation. I would simply use AufenthG § 43 (2) and hyperlink it with the exact section in German or English
So in the end, without a template I would use AufenthG § 43 (2). German federal legislation is usually available as a single HTML/PDF page, as well as HTML page of specific sections. And when it's translated into English, similarly true for English sections too. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 17:50, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Michael D. Turnbull: @Shushugah: Okay, thank you both for the help! Treetoes023 (talk) 14:41, 27 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User space name change

Can someone please change my archive page from Archive 5 to Archive 1? Thanks. DaydreamBelizer (talk) 17:52, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@DaydreamBelizer: I have done this, though you should be able to move pages yourself, and you could request for the redirect left behind in this case to be deleted under G6 or U1. I can't quite tell why the archive bot decided Archive 5 was the right place to archive to, so you may encounter this issue again, unless another volunteer can work out what is wrong (if anything) with the code used on your user talk page. — Bilorv (talk) 19:46, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Linking short form citations to bibliographies/references

I'm having trouble getting short form citations to link for one particular book cite to its respective bibliographies. The book cite includes the year (as opposed to date) as required but when I click on footnote links either in "hover mode" or in the actual notes/references section, nothing happens. Meanwhile, this is working for other citations, yet I can't see any difference between the book cites others have entered, which work, and mine, which don't. Also, to be clear, the book cites themselves link to the appropriate external sites so that's not the problem.

I've tried this internal linking with three different short forms - harvnb, Sfn, and ref# (not sure what these are called) - and I'm having no success with any of them. A couple of the articles/bibliographies in question include:

The problem I described concerns the referenced book Warren (1928), which displays in the Notes sections but as I said, doesn't link from there to the Bibliography. Thanks. Allreet (talk) 18:21, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Allreet, I've fixed the problem. The Warren entry had "|ref=Warren1928" which prevented the link from working and I removed it. The custom "ref" anchor isn't needed unless you need to use something other than the automatically created link. See Wikipedia:Citation templates and reference anchors for details. StarryGrandma (talk) 20:16, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@StarryGrandma: Sweet! I had worked with Sfn and harvnb and wasn't familiar with the ref anchor format. Now I know. So, no ref= for me - or for that matter, the alternative format. I looked over the help page and I'll hold onto its link for future reference. Thanks for the quick reply. Allreet (talk) 22:52, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Article viewing statistics (or something)

While trying to view the article viewing statistics under the "Page information" option on an article, and it turned out on any article, I was not able to get them. Is this an issue for everyone or is it just my computer not being up to the task? Einar aka Carptrash (talk) 20:58, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Carptrash: Please always post an example and try to be precise. "Page information" at Example has nothing called "Article viewing statistics" for me. Are you referring to "Page views in the past 30 days" in the "Basic information" section, "Page view statistics" in the "External links" section, or something else? Both work for me. Some talk pages like Talk:Cannabis has "Daily pageviews of this article" but it's not in "Page information". It works for me. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:17, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I did not mean to be obtuse. So, take Wilder Brigade Monument as an example. Under “tools” on the right is a link to “Page information.” If you go to the almost bottom of that page you find “Page view statistics.” When I click on that link I get some odd posting stating, “Wilder Brigade Monument: Error querying Pageviews API - Unknown” More or less the same thing happens to me on any page. If you can access the Wilder Brigade Monument stats could you post a link to them here and I’ll see if I can get them that way. Thanks, Carptrash (talk) 22:26, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Carptrash. The tool works fine for me using the desktop site on an Android smartphone. Here is a link to the results. Cullen328 (talk) 22:42, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) For me the link goes to https://pageviews.wmcloud.org/?pages=Wilder_Brigade_Monument&project=en.wikipedia.org. This redirects to https://pageviews.wmcloud.org/?project=en.wikipedia.org&platform=all-access&agent=user&redirects=0&range=latest-20&pages=Wilder_Brigade_Monument. It works for me and appears to show (in a different format) the same views as "Page views in the past 30 days" in the "Basic information" section. What is your browser? I have Firefox 106.0.1. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:51, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Neither of the links here worked for me, I continued to get the “Wilder Brigade Monument: Error querying Pageviews API - Unknown” message. However I did find the graph on the basic information which does give me the information I need to continue the discussion on the Wilder Brigade Monument talk page. Thanks everyone. Carptrash (talk) 23:47, 25 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Carptrash: You didn't name your browser but maybe it has security settings which block some JavaScript, or you have a browser extension like NoScript or whatever exists for your browser. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:36, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I my browser is Google Chrome and about every two or three weeks all pictures on wikipedia disappear until I go through some voodoo and get them back. It sucks but seems to be a fact of life. My computer is old, some of my software goes back to 2004, the year I started editing here, and my attempts to get other browsers generally don't work. I think it is called "PROGRESS." Carptrash (talk) 04:17, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Carptrash: It works for me in Google Chrome 107.0.5304.63 on Windows 10. Which version do you have? You can enter chrome://settings/help in the address bar to see it. Which operating system do you use? Does Chrome have extensions, e.g. NoScript? Enter chrome://extensions to see it. If it has extensions then try to disable them with a toggle at chrome://settings/help. Is JavaScript enabled? You can check it at https://www.whatismybrowser.com/detect/is-javascript-enabled. Even if it's enabled there, you may have settings or extensions which disable or block it in circumstances at other sites. https://pageviews.wmcloud.org requires JavaScript. Well my computer is an Apple, OSX, 10.9.5. I will try and follow up on some of your suggestions, I'm not the world's greatest computer person, but probably closer to that than the world's worst. Carptrash (talk) 17:28, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Vandalism help request from Hugo999

Editing an entry written by another person

Is there a protocol for this? How do I know who the original author is? How do I contact them to discuss the changes I would like to make? Unimech (talk) 03:33, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello @Unimech, and Welcome to Wikipedia!
You are allowed to edit any article, even if you didn't write it, and you don't need to ask for permission. You can learn more at Help:Editing.
If you have any further questions, feel free to reply, ask on my talk page or check the frequently asked question page at Wikipedia:FAQ.

Thank you very much, I'm new to this. Unimech (talk) 04:16, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Unimech, You can find out the original author of the page by using the Page history. You can contact any user on their Talk page. Although you don't need to ask permission to edit, there are times when it's best to discuss changes with other editors interested in a page in order to build consensus. Such discussions should take place on the talk page of the effected article. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 04:14, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you very much, I'm new to this. Unimech (talk) 04:17, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Unimech To sort of drive home the point of how things work when editing an article that someone else wrote: When you do go to an article's History page to see who wrote it, typically, you'll have to go through a long edit history--often many pages long. That's a reverse chronological list of everybody who ever made a change to the article--be that major rewrites or fixing a comma. The oldest entry is the person who first wrote the article. All the later contributors made changes to the article; they might have discussed it either with previous contributors or on the article's talk page--far more likely, they did not. When you get to the first author, you can click on the date to see the article as it was in the beginning. Very often, it's completely different from the current version; it's quite likely that whatever you want to change was written by someone other than the original author.
"It is written" (somewhere--yes, I've read it) that if one can't bear to see one's Wikipedia contributions edited beyond recognition, one probably shouldn't contribute to Wikipedia. If you do think your proposed edit should be discussed, you can research who wrote whatever you want to change (I've done that; it can be a substantial project) and contact that person, or--usually a better idea--discuss it on the talk page. That's what I do when I think something might be contentious or I think a change should be made, but don't feel qualified to do it.
If you now feel you can just go ahead and make the change, just go ahead. Don't neglect to add an edit summary; if the edit is substantial, try to be fairly specific (while still being concise) in the summary. If someone has a problem with it, someone will probably change it back. In that case, see "It is written" above; then it's highly recommended that you take it up on the talk page, rather than re-reverting.

Contributing to Wikipedia

Dear Sir or Madam, A notice came up asking for donations towards wikipedia. Is there bank details where I can walk into a bank and just credit £2 as and when I like? This is much easier than using a card for me. Also it retains my id. 2A02:C7E:3922:6F00:D976:56B:19C9:A493 (talk) 05:52, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, IP editor. The Wikimedia Foundation handles the fundraising, and the English language Wikipedia has nothing to do with it. To be honest, they have massive cash reserves, and small donations like you are describing are not really needed. My suggestion is to buy a meal or a drink for yourself instead. Cullen328 (talk) 06:01, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Would it be appropriate for me to create a wikipedia page dedicated to useful links to Turkish botany, covering web pages, forums, PDFs, books etc (books would provide a google search for the ISBN). The advantage of being on wikipedia would be that it is long-lasting and others could jointly add things, and the Flora of Turkey webpage could usefully provide a link to it. Cheers, David Meteorquake (talk) 07:06, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Meteorquake Per WP:EL, you shouldn't create an article for that. If you think such a page would be helpful to you in your WP-editing, you can put it in your userspace. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 08:00, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
You might want to look at some of these for an idea of what that type of article would look like: Category:Bibliographies by subject, as well as the guidelines in WP:BIB#Topical bibliographies. Umimmak (talk) 14:30, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Meteorquake Indeed, you could add to Bibliography_of_biology#Botany which is a bit sparse at present. I assume you could provide sources in addition to those relevant to Turkey. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:41, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The "Bibliography by Subject" example represents the kind of approach I'm thinking of, similar to "Films Set in France" sort of pages of which there are numerous on Wikipedia.
In today's e-world as well as high-quality print books there are also many high-quality static reference PDFs created by experts (e.g. "The Oaks of Turkey", an 87 page PDF) and also dynamic sites (think of a plant list with plant maps which you enter a plant name).
It would need to be dedicated to the botany of Turkey rather than wider but could include wider links relevant to it, for the simple reason the number of links for a wider region would be far more than is appropriate for a single page, and secondly people do focus on a particular country in their botany for very many reasons.
I'm not sure who came up with the idea of a section for botany in "Bibliographies by subject", as I don't think that would be workable for botany, it would have too many entries.
I'm not convinced a user page would be the best approach as it needs to feel owned by all and have the ability for others to make additions (I've not made a user page before but I suspect that might be harder).
Look forward to your further comments on this as, it would need to be something system moderators are happy with. I certainly think it's a good idea and the examples provided in the comments suggest it has precedent.
David Meteorquake (talk) 15:20, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Meteorquake: It might be worth asking in the talk pages for Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Bibliographies, Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Plants, and Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Turkey for specific guidance. It would be helpful for your article if you could find sources that show "List of sources about Turkish botany" is itself a notable topic: For a bibliography on a topic to be notable, the members of that bibliography should be discussed as a group in reliable sources. This discussion may take the form of a published standalone bibliography on the topic, a bibliography in a published reliable source on the topic or recommendations for further reading on the topic published in a reliable source on the topic. So if I were you I'd try to find other sources which have themselves discuss sources on Turkish botany. I would also consider "Bibliography of Anatolian plants"; it might be that botanical sources consider peninsulas moreso than national borders. Umimmak (talk) 15:23, 27 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Editing Issue

Hi my boss is Zain Verjee and ive been trying to update her Wiki page with her wanted changes but the whole page keeps reverting to an older version and now im locked out from being able to edit the page - I've never edited a wiki page before so clearly I did it wrong but I dont know what to do now. Julaiwig (talk) 15:43, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Julaiwig Please see the information on your user talk page, and review the policies described, including WP:PAID(declaring paid editing is a Terms of Use requirement). I would note it is not "her wiki page", but a Wikipedia article about your boss. She has no special rights to it as the subject, though her input is welcome. You already seem to be aware of how to make an edit request; that is how you should propose changes you or your boss feel are needed. 331dot (talk) 15:49, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
The article Zain Verjee is already too fluffy, and smells like it's repeatedly been edited by people connected to the subject. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:54, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Oh okay so if I make an edit request with all the changes thats fine and then someone can update it? The current page is just super outdated thats why I was trying to update. Julaiwig (talk) 16:06, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Yes you can, but the editor who responds to your request will not necessarily implement it exactly as you requested. If they feel that the changes you are asking for are promotional, are slanted to remove well-referenced negative information, or are not backed up by reliable independent sources, they may decide not to implement them, or to implement them very differently. You can make it more likely that your request will be accepted by:
1. Making individual, very precise edit requests: "Please add X after Y", "Please remove X", "Please replace X with Y".
2. Making sure that any information you ask to be included is cited to a published source: preferably a source unconnected with your boss, but for certain kinds of information non-independent sources are acceptable.
3. Remembering that the article is Wikipedia's, not your boss's, and what she wants it to say is not necessarily relevant.

Okay sounds good, I just submitted an edit request Julaiwig (talk) 16:32, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
@Julaiwig, there is a 99% chance that the request you've submitted will sit in the queue for weeks before being closed as not accepted. It is very long and has no inline citations, only a bunch of (mostly unhelpful) inline external links and a long list of (also mostly unhelpful) external links at the end. If you and your boss would like to get things done more quickly and efficiently, I'd recommend following ColinFine's advice above. What template should I use.

When looking through the new users page, I found the article Southern Regional College had been recently edited by the user User:Wrightj797, and it seemed to be from the colleges point of view. As they did remove vandalism, I believe this to be in good faith, but I'm not sure what to do about it. What template should I use, and how should I notify the user?

I ask this as I am trying to learn more about how to use Wikipedia, including editing and creating an inclusive space for newcomers. (Some might consider me a newcomer, but I'm always trying to learn)

don't know who else to ask...

Hello, for some years ago I added several entries to Wikipedia, since then I have only very occasionally done anything at all. But today I see that I no longer have an account, which surprises me. It also annoys me be cause in the last couple of years I've donated to Wikipedia. So is there anyone I can contact to resolve this issue? Thank you for your help. Bob em (talk) 16:29, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Bob em You say you don't have an account, but you are using it right now. Did you have a previous account? The account you are using has a small number of edits, though most are not recent. If there are specific articles you are referencing, it would help to know their titles.
Please understand that we editors have nothing to do with donations or the donation process- donations are collected by the Wikimedia Foundation that primarily operates the computers Wikipedia is on, and is not involved in day to day operations. Donations or lack of donating has no impact on editing or discussions. 331dot (talk) 16:33, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The page User:Bob em says "Wikipedia does not have a user page with this exact title". Some users think that means the account doesn't exist or isn't working but it just means the user has not created a user page for the account. Doing so is completely optional and the account works fine without it. Was that it? The message would be different if the account didn't actually exist, e.g. User:No user by this name. I've been trying to get link colours I can comfortably read in the new Vector, but my CSS skills are almost nonexistent. So far I have

a:link {color: #3162C4;}

a:visited {color: #24478F;}

a:new {color: #CD0000;}

This does not display disambiguation pages in orange, nor nonexisting pages in red until after I've visited them.

Anybody knows how to fix this? Many thanks :). —Femke 🐦 (talk) 18:02, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

You can get disambiguation pages to display in orange using the setting in the Appearance section of Gadgets in your Preferences. Bazza (talk) 18:39, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It seems that changing my CSS overrides that setting. —Femke 🐦 (talk) 19:00, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) @Femke: You have not set any class names for the links. Class names are .classname. Pseudo-classes (such as "visited" or "active") are set using :pseudoclass.
• a is used to select links to existing unvisited pages.
• a:visited is used to select links to existing visited pages.
• a.new is used to select links to non-existing pages (red links).
• a.mw-disambig is used to select disambiguation links.
So try the following:
• a { color: blue;}
• a:visited { color: lightblue;}
• a.new { color: red;}
• a.mw-disambig { color: orange;}
If they're close to what you want, you can tweak the colour names or use hex codes.
If you're up for learning more, try MDN Web Docs or w3schools. Bazza (talk) 19:35, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
None of those appear to be a hex code for any shade of orange, and I'm not aware of a :new pseudoclass. a:link already describes links that haven't been visited yet. If you're still editing your personal CSS, you can try editing the class mw-disambig instead. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 19:19, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I have no idea what new means either, it was suggested at a solution for redlinks not showing up at the Vector RfC.
I've added a:mw-disambig {color: #f17600;} in my CSS, but that doesn't work either (I had hoped that the setting in Gadgets would still work). —Femke 🐦 (talk) 19:35, 26 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

How to prevent continuous vandalism

Hello, I have a problem with a user that continuously adds unrelated information on a page and to make it legit adds a reference. However, when you check the reference(s) name of the person is never mentioned it. I told him several times about this, but still, the use insists. I wonder what would be the next step. Should I mention the problem on the "notice board"? Erfan2017 (talk) 01:12, 27 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Erfan2017. On Wikipedia, vandalism has a very specific and narrow definition, which is editing (or other behavior) deliberately intended to obstruct or defeat the project's purpose, which is to create a free encyclopedia, in a variety of languages, presenting the sum of all human knowledge. The edits you object to do not meet that definition of vandalism. There are several forms of dispute resolution available to you. Please use them and please be careful to avoid using the word "vandalism" unless it is indisputably accurate. Cullen328 (talk) 05:19, 27 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

The county register of deeds, even of a major urban county such as Shelby (I'm from Chester County myself) is simply not notable enough to call for an article about them. Those people in Wikipedia who are or have been registers of deeds are in here because they also achieved something notable, such as membership in the state or federal legislature, etc. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:29, 27 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

     Courtesy link: J. Michael Diaz - 199.208.172.35 (talk) 21:13, 27 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Susannah. It sounds as if you and your friend have a (very common) misunderstanding about Wikipedia. The article about your friend is not in any way at all "his page", it is Wikipedia's article about him, and it is neither owned nor controlled by him.
If you are a volunteer, then you probably do not count as a paid editor, for whom it is mandatory to make a formal declaration; but you certainly have a conflict of interest, and you would be well advised to declare this on your user page, and to avoid editing J. Michael Diaz directly. What you should do rather is to make edit requests on the article's talk page (see that link for details).
Please remember that Wikipedia is not interested in what the subject of an article says or wants to say about themselves, or what their associates say about them. Wikipedia is only interested in what people who have no connection with the subject, and who have not been prompted or fed information on behalf of the subject, have chosen to publish about the subject in reliable sources. Not much of the text is sourced, which is not acceptable in a biography of a living person; but if it can't be cited to sources unconnected with Diaz, then most of it should not be in the article. That is wehy several of your edits have been reverted.
The problem was you've had with references seems to be that in your last edit you put both the title and the URL in the |url= field, which of course the software isn't happy with. ColinFine (talk) 22:04, 27 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Identification of Death in Wikipedia articles

I was reading a Wikipedia article that includes a list of people, some of whom are deceased. For deceased persons, the author included a "death dagger" immediately following the name. This seemed confusing to me because the symbol "looks" almost identical to a textual "t".

For that reason, I felt the "death dagger" should somehow be clearly distinguishable from a "t".

My 1st thought was to edit those "death daggers" to appear higher (as Superscript), but I don't know whether that CAN be done in Wikipedia or - if it can - HOW to do it. If a superscripted "death dagger" can't be done, is there another method of more clearly identifying that a person is deceased?

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pdalton (talkcontribs) 21:00, 27 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Pdalton: Please always link pages you refer to. I can guess from your contributions that it's United States Wrestling Association. It uses the dagger character U+2020 which renders as †, e.g. in Ronnie P. Gossett†. It doesn't look much like the letter t to me but the rendering of characters depends on your software. dagger uses an image instead, e.g. in Ronnie P. Gossett†. Is that better on your device? For me it's even more clear it's not a t. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:45, 27 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

User:Jimbo Wales' talk page

Does User:Jimbo Wales respond to requests made on his talk page? Or are the other users the only ones that do it for him? I found one of his administrative actions from 16 years ago that I would like him to reverse. StellarHalo (talk) 22:38, 27 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, StellarHalo, have you tried to check Jimbo's contributions list at Special:Contributions/Jimbo_Wales? --CiaPan (talk) 22:54, 27 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
I just did and it seems that Jimbo has not been on this site very often let alone his own talk page. Does this mean I cannot count on a response from him if I make a request? StellarHalo (talk) 01:49, 28 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
It seems like you'd find out much faster simply by asking Jimbo, rather than asking us if he responds quickly. Why are you wasting time with this? --Golbez (talk) 02:22, 28 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Well I thought that I would have more chance of success if I keep the request strictly between me and Jimbo. But you are right. I should not be hesitating. StellarHalo (talk) 02:25, 28 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
As an admin, will you be answering my unban request if I post it on Jimbo's talk page? StellarHalo (talk) 03:06, 28 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
Didn't you say something about not hesitating? --Golbez (talk) 03:51, 28 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Jimbo Wales has never been a particularly active editor. He only has about 15,000 edits in total across all Wikimedia projects, and roughly half of those are to User talk:Jimbo Wales. His editing frequency peaked in 2011 with 2086 edits and has been declining steadily ever since, with only 69 edits in 2022, and none in October. For what it's worth, I have made six times more edits in 13 years as Jimbo has made in 22 years. Cullen328 (talk) 04:15, 28 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@StellarHalo: User_talk:Jimbo_Wales has over 4000 watchers. Posting there is not a private conversation "strictly between me and Jimbo". This account you are using is clearly not banned. f you have another account that is banned, stop using this one and post your request on that account's talk page. Gehenna Press

Sylvia Plath is mentioned, but misspelled as "Silvia." 2A01:CB1D:8149:A300:2469:ED46:B555:FC9 (talk) 10:03, 28 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

It was piped to Silvia from the 'Y' spelling. I have changed it, as not clear what the reason may be; can be restored if necessary. Eagleash (talk) 10:23, 28 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Watchlist issue

When I warn an editor using Twinkle, that automatically puts the editor on my watchlist. If the editor's account is new to en.wiki, it also shows the account creation on my watchlist. In the case of Valentin51000, I am seeing the entry for my warning at 11:56 today, but I am not seeing the account creation at 11:47. Anyone know why?--Bbb23 (talk) 12:10, 28 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

I think it is because the account was originally created on frwiki, thus the log entry reading created automatically. ■ ∃ Madeline ⇔ ∃ Part of me ; 12:20, 28 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
And note also Special:CentralAuth/Valentin51000 which may be of interest. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:23, 28 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]
So, what you're both saying is that if an account was created earlier on another wiki, it won't show up when it's "created" here. I don't know if the terminology has anything to do with it, but I suppose it was created on fr.wiki but registered here, so no log entry on my watchlist. Just trying to piece this together. I'm sure all this makes total sense to some people, but not much to me. And this isn't purely an academic nit. If I could track an editor's contributions, life would be easier when it comes to monitoring newbie vandals.--Bbb23 (talk) 12:45, 28 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

Image with non-free use rationale that is actually in the public domain

The image File:Valéry Inkijinoff.jpg has a non-free use rationale. But an identical copy is on Wikimedia Commons, where a procedural deletion request suggests that the file is in the public domain. If this is indeed the case, then the following actions should be taken:

1. Restore the original, higher resolution version of this image and transfer it to Commons.
2. Delete the Wikipedia copy.
