Revision as of 22:26, 5 April 2018

    Mediawiki:Spam-blacklist is meant to be used by the spam blacklist extension. Unlike the meta spam blacklist, this blacklist affects pages on the English Wikipedia only. Any administrator may edit the spam blacklist. See Wikipedia:Spam blacklist for more information about the spam blacklist.

    Instructions for editors

    There are 4 sections for posting comments below. Please make comments in the appropriate section. These links take you to the appropriate section:

    1. Proposed additions
    2. Proposed removals
    3. Troubleshooting and problems
    4. Discussion

    Each section has a message box with instructions. In addition, please sign your posts with ~~~~ after your comment.

    Completed requests are archived. Additions and removals are logged, reasons for blacklisting can be found there.

    Addition of the templates {{Link summary}} (for domains), {{IP summary}} (for IP editors) and {{User summary}} (for users with account) results in the COIBot reports to be refreshed. See User:COIBot for more information on the reports.

    Instructions for admins
    Any admin unfamiliar with this page should probably read this first, thanks.
    If in doubt, please leave a request and a spam-knowledgeable admin will follow-up.

    Please consider using Special:BlockedExternalDomains instead, powered by the AbuseFilter extension. This is faster and more easily searchable, though only supports whole domains and not whitelisting.

    1. Does the site have any validity to the project?
    2. Have links been placed after warnings/blocks? Have other methods of control been exhausted? Would referring this to our anti-spam bot, XLinkBot be a more appropriate step? Is there a WikiProject Spam report? If so, a permanent link would be helpful.
    3. Please ensure all links have been removed from articles and discussion pages before blacklisting. (They do not have to be removed from user or user talk pages.)
    4. Make the entry at the bottom of the list (before the last line). Please do not do this unless you are familiar with regular expressions — the disruption that can be caused is substantial.
    5. Close the request entry on here using either {{done}} or {{not done}} as appropriate. The request should be left open for a week maybe as there will often be further related sites or an appeal in that time.
    6. Log the entry. Warning: if you do not log any entry you make on the blacklist, it may well be removed if someone appeals and no valid reasons can be found. To log the entry, you will need this number – 834473458 after you have closed the request. See here for more info on logging.

    Proposed additions

    pegasimediagroup.com

    Multiple IP addresses keep replacing established reference links with this generic-looking random marketing site. These changes include talk pages. Some examples: [1] [2] [3] [4] etc. Grayfell (talk) 07:12, 21 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    @Grayfell: plus Added to MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist. --Dirk Beetstra T C 07:21, 21 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    quebecnewstribune.com

    Fake newspaper-like domain used for spamming [5]. ☆ Bri (talk) 20:42, 21 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    @Bri: no Declined, only one addition until now, other means may be sufficient. --Dirk Beetstra T C 03:51, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    Other links in deleted articles, i think, and it's fake news. We should have a low bar to blacklisting fake news sites. Guy (Help!) 19:28, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    tamil.stage3.in

    Persistent WP:REFSPAM from Tamizhan2018 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log), Stage3news (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) and 122.165.202.148 (talk · contribs · deleted contribs · logs · filter log · block user · block log) at least. -- Begoon 06:45, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    The bot noted it already .. 'Stage3news' suggests the whole domain, so poking here to see what that report says, we might blanket the top domain. --Dirk Beetstra T C 11:50, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Ok, I wasn't sure if a bot would have picked it up or I needed to do it manually. If the bot already spotted it that's reassuring. Only thing I've seen from that domain has been refspam or linkspam. Cheers. -- Begoon 12:02, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    @Begoon: No, there is no close monitoring on Category:Open Local COIBot Reports .. but if the bot noticed and someone reports that generally means that something needs to be done.
    The higher domain, stage3.in is not less spammy than tamil.stage3.in. I know what button to press. --Dirk Beetstra T C 12:17, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    @Begoon: plus Added to MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist. --Dirk Beetstra T C 12:18, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
    Thanks for the quick, efficient response. Cheers. -- Begoon 12:26, 22 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    bynext.com

    Seem a site to promote buying a similar domain name of poplar website. The user just randomly spam to articles of wikipedia, not sure did socks existed. Matthew_hk tc 09:12, 25 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    @Matthew hk: plus Added to MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist. --Dirk Beetstra T C 09:19, 25 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    footballtalentscout.net

    Self-published source by a guy called Jacek Kulig (a football fans) which the personal blog was spammed in footballer articles as citation. Matthew_hk tc 11:06, 25 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    @Matthew hk: I only see spamming in 2014, recently it is seemingly mainly used by regulars. I do not see any current problems that warrant blacklisting. --Dirk Beetstra T C 11:40, 25 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    healthguideinfo.com

    Being spammed by several IPs etc. Not a MEDRS ref, just spam. Jytdog (talk) 18:23, 26 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    thatssoft.com

    Many IPs keeps adding links to this website to film pages, repeating linking, examples: [6] [7] [8]. 2A02:C7F:963F:BA00:C51:C3B4:3399:F0B3 (talk) 11:04, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    plus Added to MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist. --Dirk Beetstra T C 12:06, 4 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    appstar.net.in

    spammed by

    Repeated after final warning (for 43.225.3.202). Obvious SEO activity for Indian app site (a few other sites are also involved, but less often for now). GermanJoe (talk) 07:16, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    @GermanJoe: plus Added to MediaWiki:Spam-blacklist. --Dirk Beetstra T C 09:11, 5 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Proposed removals

    privatestudentloans.guru

    PrivateStudentLoans.guru is the only advertisement-free web site to list all private student loan programs. It is also the only web site to tell students why they shouldn't borrow private student loans. It is being blocked by a blanket regular expression that is blocking all domains in the .guru top level domain, without any justification. (\b[_\-0-9a-z]+\.guru\b) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 73.74.66.214 (talk) 01:24, 24 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    no Declined,  Defer to Whitelist for specific links on this domain. The .guru tld is totally blocked because, next to some good material, there is much, much more utter rubbish there that got spammed, and material that has no place on wikipedia in the first place. Path of least disruption. --Dirk Beetstra T C 13:13, 24 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    justjared.com

    Not a spam website nor a redirection website. It is a news website that includes interviews.— Preceding unsigned comment added by Vargo2 (talkcontribs)

    @Vargo2: no Declined,  Defer to Whitelist for specific links on this domain. As far as I recall, the material tended to be unreliable and mis/abused to a scale that it needed to be controlled. --Dirk Beetstra T C 20:32, 30 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    Troubleshooting and problems

    Logging / COIBot Instr

    Blacklist logging

    Full instructions for admins

    Quick reference

    For Spam reports or requests originating from this page, use template {{/request|0#section_name}}

    • {{/request|213416274#Section_name}}
    • Insert the oldid 213416274 a hash "#" and the Section_name (Underscoring_spaces_where_applicable):
    • Use within the entry log here.

    For Spam reports or requests originating from Wikipedia_talk:WikiProject_Spam use template {{WPSPAM|0#section_name}}

    • {{WPSPAM|182725895#Section_name}}
    • Insert the oldid 182725895 a hash "#" and the Section_name (Underscoring_spaces_where_applicable):
    • Use within the entry log here.
    Note: If you do not log your entries, it may be removed if someone appeals the entry and no valid reasons can be found.

    Addition to the COIBot reports

    The lower list in the COIBot reports now have after each link four numbers between brackets (e.g. "www.example.com (0, 0, 0, 0)"):

    1. first number, how many links did this user add (is the same after each link)
    2. second number, how many times did this link get added to wikipedia (for as far as the linkwatcher database goes back)
    3. third number, how many times did this user add this link
    4. fourth number, to how many different wikipedia did this user add this link.

    If the third number or the fourth number are high with respect to the first or the second, then that means that the user has at least a preference for using that link. Be careful with other statistics from these numbers (e.g. good user who adds a lot of links). If there are more statistics that would be useful, please notify me, and I will have a look if I can get the info out of the database and report it. This data is available in real-time on IRC.

    Poking COIBot

    When adding {{LinkSummary}}, {{UserSummary}} and/or {{IPSummary}} templates to WT:WPSPAM, WT:SBL, WT:SWL and User:COIBot/Poke (the latter for privileged editors) COIBot will generate linkreports for the domains, and userreports for users and IPs.

    Discussion

    change.org

    Could someone explain why change.org is blacklisted? I searched for it in the archive and didn’t find it. deisenbe (talk) 13:17, 23 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]

    @Deisenbe: petition sites are blacklisted mainly due to WP:SOAPBOX violations and the accompanying spam (‘click [here] to save the ...’). There is hardly any use to link to the petitions itself barring rare exceptions (which can be whitelisted). It is only worth linking to if secondary sources describe the result and impact, making the primary source unneeded. —Dirk Beetstra T C 14:31, 23 March 2018 (UTC)[reply]
